Episode 0: I want to know the purpose of my life!

Mikuni residence, Mitakihara City.

The screams of a young teen echoed the now empty halls of the large estate.

[After Yurako passed away… my daughter underwent change.]

In its former owner's study, an open diary could be seen. Its last entry was bare for the world to see.

[She used to be a crybaby, but she stopped crying altogether and succeeded at everything she tried.]

Broken nails, stains of blood, and damaged books littered the floor of the room. The bookshelves seem to have been toppled and the belongings of the room's late owner were scattered all over, all heavily damaged.

[After her graduation… she was the one her classmates aspired to be, and she rose to stand above the others. She was such a success that there were times where I'd begin to doubt if she's my own little girl.]

Causing this destruction was a tall, voluptuous teenage girl. Her usually kind green eyes now pierced everything they saw and her hands were an unnerving sight of blood and generally unsightly fingers. The roars of rage and sorrow came from this mourning beast. There is no sign of her usual side tail as if a restraint had been removed, her ash-blonde hair was now wildly spiked in multiple directions, likely due to attempts of self-harm.

[She frightened me. I can see it myself.]

However, despite her now more animalistic expressions and mannerism, there was the clear sight of tears running down this girl's face.

[She is talented. She is someone who inspires admiration. But behind her smile lurks a coldness.]

Thrashing about in her late father's study after she had accidentally found his diary rummaging through his belongings to contact anyone who wouldn't discard her like the rest of the world had. She hadn't imagined she'd spend this fateful night in a state of wild rage and grief.

[I am just so exhausted. I want to escape.]

Who could blame her reaction? She had found her father's suicide note shortly after the case had been ruled suicide to escape the punishment for his crimes.

[I need to escape from this life…]

Indeed, this diary and the lackluster investigation should have clued the girl in on it.

[That was Yaegashi's plan from the start. To trap me… No… He took me down in an effort to drag down his true political enemy– My Brother.]

Hisaomi Mikuni, a former lawyer and aspiring politician had been found guilty of falsifying funds and stealing them for his use. Or so the news said. The true criminal behind this was in reality one of the political rivals of the Mikuni family, a man known as Yaegashi. Hisaomi Mikuni was merely framed for the crime and driven to suicide by something else entirely.

[I need to escape from Oriko.]

Who was Oriko furious at? Was she angry at Yaegashi, the man who framed her father? Was it at Hisaomi Mikuni for willingly abandoning her, who had done everything she could to support him and make him proud? Was her rage directed at her mother Yurako, who passed away when her father and herself needed her the most? Or was Oriko's wrath directed at herself and impotence? At this point, she had forgotten. Her throat had gone sore from all the screaming and crying and the pain in her hands had gone numb.

By now, Oriko Mikuni was exhausted. The thought of ending her life so she could chase after her father in hell and strangle him was looking rather convincing. There was also the idea of squeezing the stuffed toy with giant red eyes and weird ears so hard it would explode.

"Huh?" Oriko asked herself when she realized the toy she planned to destroy wasn't just alien to the room, but alive.

"Looks like you could use some help." The toy-like creature spoke without moving its mouth or body. It did not seem to breathe at all or blink, it was like a soft statue that spoke inside Oriko's head.

"W-what in the world are you!?" Oriko stepped back rather unsettled by the telepathic toy.

"I'm Kyubey. Your kind calls me a fairy." Kyubey as it referred to itself introduces itself rather casually, its voice resembling that of a young boy.

"...You offered to help, what in the world could a fairy do for me?" Oriko asked. She was rightfully suspicious of the fairy.

"I can grant you one wish. In exchange, you become a Magical Girl and fight Witches to protect this town. Sounds acceptable?" Kyubey explained in his usual tone, but there was a lingering sense of hollowness to its words.

"Then… I want to know the purpose of my life! I want a reason for why I am still alive even after all I have been put through!" In a raspy yet pleading tone, Oriko made her wish.

Kyubey's ear-bound appendages stretched towards the somber yet resolute Oriko.

With a bright light, Oriko had felt her body become lighter, in fact, her throat no longer ached and her hands could feel once more. On her palms now rested a singular item. An oval-shaped gem with a clear, white shine. There was a symbol resembling a diamond on the top with a teardrop on the lower part of the gemstone. Touching it made Oriko feel warm, both her body and spirit felt embraced.

"That is your Soul Gem. The source of your magical power and proof of your Magical Girl status." Kyubey explains in a praising tone. "Go on. Try using your magic." Kyubey continued encouragingly.

Instinctively, Oriko called forth power from the Soul Gem. She was enveloped by a bright, warm light as she suddenly realized she was nude. Nobody was around her so it wasn't as shameful, but she hoped this would come with a dress like those she'd see in anime when she was little. Upon thinking that, Oriko became adorned with a white ballroom dress that reached her feet, her legs were covered by long, white socks that made standing on a pair of high heels not be as painful as it would realistically be. Chuckling at herself, Oriko placed her Soul Gem as a brooch on her collar and formed a rather large, if a bit goofy, hat with a veil underneath to wear on her head.

Fully transformed, Oriko confidently smiled as she hoped she could find the meaning in life she had been seeking.

A heel click. Oriko had taken a step forward as her vision became overwritten.

It was a terrifying sight.

Rain fell on the ruined city, Oriko was standing behind a shorter, younger girl in a pink ballerina dress, her hair was equally pink tied into pigtails by bright red ribbons.

She was kneeling and panting.

Despite not knowing the girl, Oriko could tell she felt worried. The person in front of her attempted to regain her footing before quickly falling face-first into the concrete they stood on. Oriko reached out to help the lass before her before she weakly turned around, her gaze showed Oriko that she was afraid, the gem on her neck tied by a choker had become fully black.

"Stay away!" She screamed in horror, Oriko was confused as to why a person who visibly struggles to stand would refuse to be helped up and even tell her to leave. She asked herself if this girl was scared of her.

Before Oriko could speak, black smoke began to flow out from the girl's choker, Oriko quickly pieced it together, that was a Soul Gem. The smaller girl screamed and twitched as the smoke kept flowing as a giant Shadow began to form above the two.

"This isn't happening…" Oriko heard herself say, it wasn't her will, no, this was undoubtedly her voice. But it came from her without any noticeable movement, it wasn't Telepathy either. Oriko had heard her future self speak.

Oriko fell to her knees as she saw the lifeless gaze of the small girl whose outfit had disintegrated and become a regular school uniform. She felt like she lost someone dear to her, there was now a giant monster before her. Oriko knew this monster was what became of the girl before her, and with a single look, she knew…

"I cannot hope to fight this." She heard her future self speak as the giant Shadow encroached upon her.

What she felt next was the worst feeling in the world. She was unable to breathe, her body began feeling extreme pain as if her skin was being slowly torn off and burnt while also having things being put under it. Her eyes couldn't see, but she knew her eyes were in pain. As if her eyes were being melted by light, being ripped out of their sockets and being pierced and deflating all at the same time. She was or at least felt like she was vomiting every internal fluid she had as her nose and ears also secreted fluids she could only describe as terrible, she was deaf and could not smell anything. She felt as if her innards were being forcefully torn out and she was slowly being dragged by them while also feeling the agony of her pores completely liberating everything in her body, feeling like she was being torn open by this humiliating feeling. Her bones felt like they were being ground to dust and broken multiple ways over and over. Then it all stopped.

Oriko took a huge gasp of air as she returned to reality. She still had the outfit, Kyubey was still there, looking infinitely more disgusting despite not changing appearance at all. Oriko was shocked. But she was sure of what she experienced. She experienced the end of a Magical Girl's life and then experienced what death felt like.

"What's wrong? You took a step and then gasped for air, did something happen?" Kyubey's question snapped Oriko out of her shock.

"My apologies. I was lightheaded for a moment. Teach me the ways of the Magical Girl then, Kyubey." Oriko bows apologetically. Hiding her vision was crucial to her, she was sure to not be the first Magical Girl around nor that what she saw was the first case. Kyubey likely knew about what would become of her and other girls and may even have planned it all along.

"I like your enthusiasm. Follow my directions and you should find a place to get your first taste of what Magical Girl life entails." The plush-like animal gives hollow praise and climbs onto Oriko's shoulder.

The teenager hides her dislike for having such a creature so close to her face.
