Uncle Paul smiled and took his turn holding his soon-to-be two-year-old daughter. "You can't blame your parents for their reaction though."
"No, you are right there." Kiy agreed.
"Just be glade it wasent Greta's parents. That would have gone much worse!" Paul had his eyes on his little girl, full of love and gentle protectiveness. "To a dad, any boy coming in to 'steal' his daughter is worth caution at the very least."
"Like how my dad treated you the day you asked him for permission to marry me?" His wife asked.
"Exactly!" (1) Paul began to rock his daughter gently as he told his story, mostly to the girl in his arms but also to all of them. "I came to see her daddy for a sit-down man-to-man. Wasn't any secret I'd be asking for her hand. That's why he left me waiting in the living room by myself, with at least a dozen pictures of her sitting on a shelf. Here she was playing Cinderella, there she was riding her first bike. Bouncing on the bed looking for a pillow fight in another. In yet another running through the sprinklers with a big popsicle grin. But most prominent was one of her dancing with her dad, looking up at him. It made me realize that in her eyes I was prince charming but to him, I was just some fella riding in and stealing Cinderella."
Dad's all across the room were hugging their daughters now, whether they were kids or full grown and married.
"I remember saying to you 'Ain't she something son.' You said, "Yes she's quite a woman.' and I just stared at you because in my eyes she would always be my Cinderella." Paul's wife smiled at her father who was looking both at her and at his granddaughter.
"Then you slapped me on the shoulder," Paul continued. "And called Mia into the room. When she threw her arms around you, that's when I could see it too. I may be prince charming to her but to you I'm just some fella, riding in and stealing your Cinderella."
"But then and there you gave your blessing and Paul got on one knee and proposed in the most romantic and heartfelt way! I have that night forever in my heart to remind me of the two men who love me like the princes I always dreamed I would be as a little girl!" Mia finished.
"I love you daddy!" Sophie said suddenly, cuddling close to her father.
That sent a soft round of sweet chuckles through the family. Sophie was nearing the end of her grade school years but she seemed determined to remain as young at heart for as long as she could. Which Jack could tell was just fine with her Dad!
