Ch. 24: Celebrations
It was the end of March, and things had gone quiet again. School went on like normal…at least until the start of April. Marinette busied herself with work, so she hardly ever noticed anything on the bulletin board. Alya, however, was quick to notice.
"You know, girl, now that all that…other stuff is over, we can return to more normal subjects. Did you see? There's a talent show this year. I think you should enter."
"Me? I couldn't do that."
"Why not? We all know you can sing."
"Well it's because… Okay, fine, yes, I did at least kind of glance at the board. I have thought about it. I even picked out a song, but I don't know if I could go through with it."
"Is it a French song?"
"Non."
"English?"
"Yes, but I'm not singing in English."
"Italian?"
"No, but it was tempting."
"So, in Chinese?"
"Mandarin specifically...at least I think it is. I'm pretty sure it's a poor translation."
"Okay, what song is it then?"
"I can't tell you. That would spoil the surprise. Anyway, like I said, I'm not sure I will."
Just then, Nino and Adrien walked up.
"What's going on?" Nino asked.
"I told Marinette she should enter the talent show. She says she even picked out a song."
"Really?" Adrien said, "Well, we all know she can sing."
"Oh, come on. I'm not as good as Alya."
"It's not a competition, Mlle. Baker," Chloé said as she walked up, "If it was, the minute I entered I'd automatically win."
"Are you going to enter?"
"What for? It wouldn't be fair to everyone else. Adieu!"
Chloé walked off with Zoé and Sabrina.
"You know what?" Marinette said, "I will do it. It could be fun. I just need the right dress."
"I take it that you're going to make it yourself?" Alya asked.
"Nothing but the best for Nette," Nino said.
"And what she makes is the best," Adrien said with a wink.
"Oh, stop it," Marinette said, lightly shoving him, "Wait a minute. Are you going to enter, Als?"
"Maybe next year."
"You and me?" Nino asked.
"But of course," she replied, leaning her head against his shoulder.
Later that day at Le Grand Paris.
"Hey, Chlo," Zoé said, "About that talent show. Have you changed your mind? It could be fun."
"No," she replied while brushing her hair, "And I don't care."
"What about prom? That's right around the corner."
"That's for seniors, sister dear. Last time I checked, that doesn't apply to us."
"Graduation is right around the corner as well. That means some of our friends will be leaving. We won't be able to see them as often, probably."
"Like who?"
"Oh, you know, Théo, Socqueline, Juleka…Luka."
"What's your point?"
"I'm sure Luka would take you to prom."
"Why would I want to go with him?"
"Okay, that's enough!" she snapped, grabbing the brush.
"What?"
"What's your problem? Why do you keep ignoring and denying everything? Luka told you how he feels. Why haven't you acted on it? Why is this the only time where you act passive? What, is he not good enough for you?!"
"NO! That's not it at all!"
"Then what…?" her features softened, "You don't think you're good enough for him, do you?"
"He's an idiot," Chloé mumbled, looking away.
"He clearly doesn't care about how different the two of you are, Chlo. Give it a chance. You deserve to be happy."
"I'm plenty happy. I have family, friends, material possessions… I have you."
"You'll always have me… but is that enough? This weird hard-to-get thing or whatever it is you're doing, it's not like you at all. A Bourgeois is never indecisive. It's not fair to him, and it's not fair to yourself."
"Why does this matter to you so much?"
"I'm your sister. It's part of the job. Plus, I'm your big sister. I have to look out for you."
"You had to throw that last part in, didn't you? Are you sure you don't rehearse these speeches beforehand?"
"Of course I don't. I'm a Bourgeois, which makes me naturally talented. These speeches are, as they say, right off the cuff. Whether or not I borrow some of the lines from movies is irrelevant."
They shared a hug.
"Plus you're never going to do better."
"What are you, an expert? I've been on more dates than you."
"You have? When?"
"Lots of different times. I don't remember."
"How come you've never said anything before?"
"They weren't worth talking about. All a bunch of disappointments."
"So in other words, the one guy you've yet to go out with is the best, like I said."
"Yes, you're very smart. Shut up," she stopped to think, "You said the talent show is coming up soon, right?"
"Yeah."
"Well then, time to do what I do best - make a declaration in front of everyone."
"Anything I can do?"
"You've already done plenty, but if you insist, why not look for a nice dress for me to wear?"
"On it," she said, already looking at her phone.
Chloé made a phone call.
"Adrikins, you know that talent show we were talking about? I'll need your help."
A few weeks later, the night of the talent show arrived. Luka and Juleka were on their way to the school.
"I can't believe you and Rose didn't enter."
"Well, we're already part of a band. I'm not sure what else we could do. Besides, we have that gig at the prom."
"That's true."
"Are you formally going to prom?"
He sighed, "I don't know."
"Because of her?"
Luka said nothing.
"Look, it's your life, Luka, but it's been a year since you and her…let's say you came to an agreement. I know you're a patient guy, but I don't think it's fair."
"Come on, we've been busy. There's school, work, that extracurricular activity, and so on."
"If she means that much to you, then give her an ultimatum."
"What?"
"Maybe she really isn't sure what she wants. Maybe she's jerking you around. I don't know."
"No, you don't, but I do. I've talked to her."
"Let me finish. Regardless of how I feel about it, you're my brother, and I want you to be happy. I trust you to do the right thing."
He put his arm around her shoulder.
"Thanks, Jules."
The talent show had already started, and all their classmates were either in the audience or backstage. Zoé waved at them as they entered.
"I saved your seats. Sorry they're all the way in the back."
"Works for us," Juleka said, sitting next to Rose.
"Yeah, we appreciate it," Luka said as he sat down.
The evening wore on with various acts until they heard Mme. Bustier say…
"Our next performance for the night, believe it or not, is Marinette Dupain-Cheng with Anything Goes!"
"I didn't think she'd know that song," Nino said.
"It sounds familiar," Alya said.
"Written by Cole Porter in 1934 for the musical of the same name."
"How do you know that?"
"You know a lot about animals, I know a lot about music."
Adrien rushed into the aisle so he could get a good look. The curtain rose and some music began to play. Marinette was standing in the center of the stage with a large hand fan blocking everyone's view of her. The fan snapped shut to reveal that Marinette was wearing a form-fitting red and gold sequin dress. Her heels were gold, while one glove was red, and the other was gold, with all of it also covered in sequins. The familiar tune of the Minsky Pickup played.
"Yi wang de si wa yi kan dao
Xing li bian yao la jing bao jin tian zhi dao
Anything goes!"
"Wow, what a dress," Juleka said.
Luka gave a nod in agreement.
"Yi wang yi lu jiu cha zhen mei hao
Qing shu shu shua le feng ye ni dao yi dao
Anything goes!"
She opened the hand fan and twirled it around.
"Wan hua chen shi yi yi dao dao
Bian hua wei bao bian wei dao
Meng huan dong shi da du shi
Do shi wei ni fu shao!
Ze qi wo dui fei hua long qing liao
Dong hua dong feng song dao shou yi ding hui bao
Anything goes!"
She tossed aside the hand fan, and then tore off her dress to reveal a shorter dress underneath that allowed her to dance.
Adrien was transfixed, "Whoa."
"Go, Nette!" Ayla cheered.
Marinette then pulled a long red cloth out from her dress and spun it around herself. With everyone focusing on the cloth, she was able to easily grab her fan and dress. She finally ceased the elaborate spinning and held the cloth in front of her, showing only her head to the audience.
"Dong hua dong feng song dao shou yi ding hui bao
Anything goes!"
With a final flourish, Marinette disappeared behind the back curtain, pulling the cloth with her. The crowd applauded as Marinette came back out, now once again wearing the red and gold dress, and took a bow. Adrien rushed backstage to get ready while clapping, with Nino close behind him. As Marinette went offstage, the curtain closed, and Mme. Bustier walked back onstage.
"And now, madames et monsieurs, we come to the final act of the program, because, in her own words, we saved the best for last."
"That's her," Zoé and Sabrina said.
"Allow me to introduce Mlle. Chloé Bourgeois with Nobody Does It Better."
"I never expected her to sing that," Zoé said.
"Why not?" Luka asked.
"I figured if she was going to sing a song from a James Bond film, it'd be Diamonds are Forever or GoldenEye."
"I can't say I'm familiar with any of those."
The curtain pulled back to reveal Adrien in a white suit playing the piano. Chloé was laying atop the piano like a lounge singer. She was wearing a shiny turquoise dress that showed off her legs. She sang softly into the mic.
"Nobody does it better,
Makes me feel sad for the rest,
Nobody does it half as good as you,
Baby, you're the BEST!"
As she belted out the last word, she hopped off the piano and walked upstage. At that same moment, Nino was backstage.
"That's my cue," he said, turning on the background music to accompany Adrien.
"I wasn't lookin', but somehow you found me,
I tried to hide from your love light."
As she sang, she looked around the room to spot Luka. Zoé waved at her and pointed at Luka.
"But like Heaven above me, the spy who loved me,
Is keeping all my secrets safe tonight."
She motioned for him to get closer. Luka looked over at Zoé, and she grabbed him and shoved him into the aisle.
"And nobody does it better,
Though sometimes I wish someone could,"
Luka looked back at Zoé.
Zoé pointed at the stage, "Well, what are you waiting for?"
"Nobody does it quite the way you do,
Why'd you have to be so good?"
He started walking towards the stage.
"The way that you hold me whenever you hold me,
There's some kind of magic inside you,
That keeps me from runnin', but just keep it comin',
How'd you learn to do the things you do?"
He was now standing right next to the stage, looking up at her. He could see that her eyes were getting watery.
"And, nobody does it better,
Makes me feel sad for the rest,"
Luka now walked up the steps and onto the stage. Chloé was still looking at him.
"Nobody does it HALF as good as you!
Baby, baby! Darling, you're the best!"
He walked over and stood next to her, their eyes locked.
"Baby, you're the best,
Baby, you're the best."
The music was starting to die down now. Chloé was shedding tears as she looked at him. Luka reached over and wiped away a few tears, and they smiled at each other. Chloé finally grabbed him and pulled him into a passionate kiss. Zoé immediately jumped out of her seat and applauded, as did Sabrina and Rose. Juleka was a bit shocked, but she too joined in the applause. The entire auditorium quickly joined them. The applause died down when it seemed like the pair weren't about to stop any time soon. Mme. Bustier came onto the stage again.
"Chloé, I'm glad you picked a song that helped you express yourself, but this really isn't the time or place."
Chloé finally broke the kiss, "I'm sorry, what?"
Caline pointed at the audience, who were watching intently. Zoé, Sabrina, Juleka, and Rose were still quietly clapping.
"What are you all staring at?! Why aren't you still applauding?!"
Chloé finally walked offstage, with Luka following close behind. Adrien was still sitting at the piano. He awkwardly stood up, grabbed the sheet music, did a bow, and walked offstage as fast as he could.
"Well," Mme. Bustier continued, "I hope you all enjoyed this…rather interesting evening."
Chloé had gone into one of the dressing rooms to find the nearest mirror. Luka watched as she was clearly pretending to touch up her hair and makeup.
"That was a beautiful song."
"It was, wasn't it?"
"You did all that for me?"
"Yes, obviously."
"You couldn't just tell me how you feel?"
"I figured you'd appreciate the method of show, don't tell. You're always using music to get your point across. I decided to play your game. Besides, if I didn't go over the top, I wouldn't be me."
Luka chuckled, "That's true."
"Before anything else, I want to say that I'm sorry."
"Sorry for what?"
"For taking so long to properly reciprocate."
"I told you I didn't want you to feel pressured."
"I know, and I'm grateful, but I feel like I should apologize. I never wanted to make you feel like you weren't good enough. Like you had to earn my affections. Believe me, you had them already, but I…I was just…I felt like I wasn't good enough."
"I will admit, when you asked me to wait, a part of me wanted to argue."
"Seriously?"
"But I told myself that it wouldn't do anyone any good to start an argument. Besides, I trusted you. I knew you wouldn't just move on and forget about me."
"I'm thankful you're so patient."
"And I knew you were always exceptional."
Chloé quickly looked away.
"I'm sorry, I know that word means something to you."
She was now looking at him, a playful smile on her face.
"You know, a lot of people will say I'm not the type of girl you should be with."
"What is my type exactly?"
"Oh, you know, someone all nice and sweet and quiet, like Marinette or somebody."
"She is a very kind and thoughtful person, but I think she and Adrien are a good fit already."
"It's honestly disgusting how cute they are together. He's always calling her his princess."
"Well he can keep his princess," he took her hands in his, "I have a queen."
"I guess that makes you my kingsnake."
He chuckled again, "I love you, Chloé."
She gave a sincere smile, "I know."
He sighed, "You're not making this easy."
"And I never will. Think you can handle me?"
He smiled again, "Bring it on."
He pulled her close, dipped her, and kissed her. Once they pulled away, Chloé went over and opened the door. Adrien and Marinette were waiting outside.
"I knew at least one of you would be waiting. Yes, we're a couple now. So go away, tell everyone else, and give us some actual privacy."
She then slammed the door in their faces. They simply shrugged and ran off to tell the others. Chloé sat down on a nearby couch.
"What a bunch of pests."
"They're just happy for you," Luka replied, "Or rather, for us."
He began to massage her shoulders.
"I didn't ask for a massage, Musician King."
He stopped, but left his hands on her shoulders.
"But I didn't say stop. I just wasn't expecting it."
He resumed the massage.
"Get used to it, My Queen."
She gave a contented sigh, "I can absolutely get used to this."
A week later, and it was Chloé's birthday. Early that morning, Zoé came into her room..
"Chloé, wake up," she said, poking her.
She yawned, "What is it?"
"Happy Birthday."
"Thanks," she replied, laying back down and covering her head with a pillow.
"Don't you want breakfast?"
"I want another three or four hours of sleep."
"Can I join you?"
"Whose birthday is this?" she asked, listing her sleep mask.
"Pweeze?" she responded, making her eyes bigger.
"Pouah, don't ever say it like that again. Just lay down and keep quiet."
She gave a big cheesy smile, "Thank you."
"Yeah yeah."
About four hours later, they woke up and had lunch at the hotel.
"Another fine meal. Now for a shopping trip…after we pick up Sabrina that is."
As soon as the limo pulled up to the Raincomprix residence, they saw that the whole family was outside waiting.
"Happy Birthday, Chloé!"
"Thank you, M. et Mme. Raincomprix. Ready to go, Brina?"
"Ready when you are, Chlo."
On the way to the mall, Chloé received a text from Luka.
Luka: Happy Birthday! Tonight I'm taking you out to dinner
Chloé: My, aren't we bold? I hope you wear something nice.
Luka: You can count on it.
Juleka was passing by when she saw Luka collapse on his bed.
"Are you okay?"
"My hands are sweaty."
Later, during the shopping trip…
"Those are some nice shoes, Chlo," Sabrina said.
"Thank you."
"These clothes are nice, but they seem a bit…different from what you usually wear," Zoé said, "Trying something different, Sis?"
"Oh, I dunno, maybe."
"I think I know why," she said in a sing-song voice.
"Don't say it."
"Say what?" Sabrina asked.
"She wants to look nice for Luka."
Chloé gave her a look, but said nothing.
"You two haven't been on a proper date yet. Is that what this dress is for?"
"Yes," Chloé muttered, "He asked me earlier."
"Are you two going out to dinner?"
"... We've talked about it."
Zoé and Sabrina began to giggle.
Chloé rolled her eyes, "Let's just get this stuff and go."
When the trio arrived at the Liberty, the band was already playing. Marinette brought a cake, of course.
"Happy Birthday, Chloé!" everyone shouted.
"Yeah, thanks. Where's the food?"
"Even though what you really want is a special snack, right?" Zoé whispered to her.
"Quiet, you."
Everyone had plenty to eat, and the band played some more songs until the sun started to set.
"Excuse me, everyone," Luka said, "I need to change clothes."
Chloé walked over to the other side of the houseboat and looked out at the water. Zoé was by her side in a second.
"Feeling a little nervous?"
"Me? Of course not! Why would I ever?"
Zoé raised an eyebrow at her.
"Okay, fine, yes. Maybe just a tiny bit. I know it's ridiculous."
"No it's not. It's perfectly normal."
"Even when you're already a couple?"
"That just shows how important this is for you. Go below deck and change into your new clothes. It'll drive him crazy."
"Is it a good idea to take the limo?"
"It's better for your clothes. After all, it is your first date. Later, when Luka gets a motorcycle, you can dress however you want."
While Chloé went away to change, Luka walked out from his room. He was wearing a long sleeve button shirt and, of course, the vest Chloé had bought him.
"You look very sharp, Luka," Juleka said.
"So handsome!" Rose added.
"Thanks."
After a few minutes, Chloé came back outside wearing a dress that was, naturally, mostly black with a bit of yellow and white. Her and Luka locked eyes.
"I feel like my heart's going to leap out of my chest," Chloé thought.
"She's so…" Luka finally spoke, "...beautiful."
The pair walked up to each other.
"Joyeux Anniversaire, Chloé."
"Merci, musicien."
"Shall we be going?"
"Sure, why not?"
"Just one thing," Zoé said, pulling Luka away.
She leaned in close to whisper in his ear.
"I know you're a nice guy, and I trust you, but, just in case you do have a lapse in judgment and end up trying something stupid, remember this: a bateleur is a snake-eagle."
She pointed at him, and then made a slashing motion over her throat.
"I knew she was tough, but wow," Luka thought as he nodded in comprehension.
He offered Chloé his arm and they got in the limo.
"What did she say?" Chloé asked
"Uh…she essentially said she loves you."
"Oh…interesting time to say it, but…"
Chloé waved back and Zoé, who cheerfully smiled and waved back.
"So where to?"
"It's a surprise," he replied, as he then whispered the location to the driver.
The ride was surprisingly quiet. Luka snaked his arm around Chloé, while she reciprocated by laying her head on his shoulder. Some minutes later…
"We're here."
"Will you be needing a ride back, Mlle. Chloé?"
"No, that's okay. I'm sure M. Couffaine here will get me home safely."
"Have a pleasant evening, Mlle."
"Thank you, Armand."
"And a happy birthday," he said as he drove off.
She now got a good look at the café they arrived at.
"It's a nice place I visit now and then," Luka said, "Ever been here?"
"I think you know the answer to that."
"We had a pretty big lunch, so I figured this would be a good place for a light dinner."
"Yes, you're very smart."
They were seated in a back booth and ordered their meal.
"So…how was your day?"
"Oh, you know, fine. I slept in, I had lunch, I went shopping, and all that other stuff I wanted to do."
"Well, it is your birthday."
They soon had a nice meal. Afterwards…
"You're kinda quiet tonight," Luka said.
"So are you. Sorry I dragged you out of your element."
"Come again?"
"Well, you didn't get to bring any of your instruments with you. Usually you let your music do the talking for you."
"Fair point, but that's one of the reasons I picked this spot."
He pointed to a live band that was now ready to perform. As they began to play, the couple paid for the meal and went outside. The music was still loud enough that anyone on the street could hear it.
"Dance with me," Luka said, holding out his hand.
"What? Now? Right here?"
"Why not?"
She shrugged, "Can't argue with that."
They began to slow dance together.
"I didn't know you could dance, blue boy."
"I heard you took lessons."
"Well, don't let the fact that I'm classically trained intimidate you."
Luka leaned forward so their foreheads touched.
"Cute, but how are we getting back to the hotel?"
"I thought we could fly back," he replied with a smirk, "But first I'll need a lift."
She rolled her eyes, "The things I do for you."
They found a secluded spot and transformed. Apireine was now lifting Vipèrion high into the air.
"Say, now that you're an adult, that means you can sting as many people as you want."
She gave a devious smile, "Don't think I haven't thought about it. Now how high up do we have to go?"
"This should be enough. Just point me in the direction of the hotel."
"That way, my cunning cobra."
"Then let's go."
She let him go, and he unfurled his suit like a wingsuit once again.
"I'll admit," she said, "That's one of your better ideas."
"Thanks, I try."
They eventually landed atop Le Grand Paris.
"As I recall, the last time we were in costume, I got a kiss."
She rolled her eyes, "Yeah, fine."
She gave him a quick peck on the lips, "There, now hurry up and change."
They changed back and sat down on a nearby deckchair.
"It's a bit cool out tonight, isn't it?" Luka asked.
"If you're just saying that as an excuse to hold me close…then it's about time."
They were now cuddled up on the deckchair.
"I hope you had fun today."
"Fun doesn't even begin to describe it, my bard."
"I mean, I know you provided the ride, and paid for dinner -"
"But you picked where we went. I know you're saving your money. I don't mind."
"Even so, I want to give you something else. Something very special. Something you can use over and over again."
"Oh really? And what might that be?"
He reached over and tilted her chin up. He then gave her a very long and passionate kiss. They were both breathing heavily.
"And you say I can use that any time at all?" Chloé asked.
"Conditions permitting, yes."
"Well, it's still my birthday. So…"
"One quick question. Will you go to the prom with me?"
"Will I go? I'm your girlfriend. I demand to be taken!"
"Just wanted to make it official."
"I'll be sure to help you select the proper outfit so we match."
"Naturally. You're the expert there. My band is performing there, by the way."
"I figured. Now where were we?"
They exchanged a few more kisses.
"How would you like to help us make it a prom people won't forget?"
"Sounds like something right up my alley. We can discuss it later. Now let's go to my room."
He suddenly looked nervous, "What? But we -"
"Don't start shaking like a rattlesnake tail. We're not going to do anything serious…just a little naughty. I assume you've been practicing your massage technique?"
"I'll let you be the judge."
The next morning, Zoé let herself into the room.
"Good mor…ning?"
She stood there, mouth hanging open at the sight of Chloé and Luka asleep on the bed.
"At least they're still wearing most of their clothes, which must mean nothing too crazy happened," she thought, "Although, normally, the idea of laying in bed while wearing a dress like that would make Chloé scream her head off. I'd better just go back to my room."
Just as she turned around, the pair began to stir. They smiled at each other.
"Morning, beautiful."
"Morning, handsome."
Chloé suddenly jumped off the bed.
"It's morning?!"
That's when she noticed Zoé was trying to sneak out.
"Nothing happened!"
"I believe you," Zoé called back as she quickly went out the door.
"I'd better get going," Luka said with a big smile on his face, "I'll text you later."
He walked over to Chloé, who was clearly expecting a kiss on the lips. He instead kissed her neck.
"I hate you," she purred.
"How much do you hate me?"
She gave him a kiss on the lips, "This much."
"Good to know," he replied, running his fingers through her hair, "See you later, mon amour."
As soon as he left, Chloé plopped back onto the bed. After a few minutes, Zoé joined her.
"Something tells me this birthday will be hard to top," Zoé said.
"You ain't kidding."
Not long after that, Luka arrived home.
"About time you got home, dear brother," Juleka said, "You're lucky mom's out at the moment. I hope you didn't do anything stupid."
"You know me better than that."
"Yeah, but I thought I'd mention it. Still, as much as I do know about you, this is the one thing I never could've predicted."
"I'm going to wash up," he said, playfully shoving her aside.
May then rolled around, and it was soon Alya's birthday.
"Happy Birthday, bestie!"
Alya was stunned, "You're giving me your scooter?"
"I have my motorcycle now. I know you're going to need this."
"You're the best," she said, hugging Marinette.
"What's Nino got planned?"
"He said he was taking me out to eat this weekend, but even with the DJ jobs he's been getting, I can't imagine where he's getting the money."
"Maybe you shouldn't ask. He's doing this because he loves you."
"Good point."
Meanwhile, over at Le Grand Paris, Nino was in Chloé's room with Zoé and Adrien. Nino was on the floor, having fallen over. Adrien and Zoé were on one sofa, while Chloé was on the other.
"I don't know what to say," Nino said.
"Then shut up," Chloé replied.
Zoé shot her a look.
"I'm kidding! You don't have to say anything, Lahiffe."
"I can never repay you for this."
"That's the thing about a gift. Such an action is unnecessary."
"I know, but why?"
"Well, for one thing, your birthday is right around the corner. For another, this is supposed to be special, so you can't have anything interfering with the date. So it's all quite simple, really. I'm giving you money as a present, and in turn you're using that money for Alya's present."
"That can't be the only reason for such generosity."
"Because you're a good person, Nino. You've been a good friend to Adrien. You've been a great boyfriend to Alya, or so I hear. Just don't spread this around."
"My lips are sealed, Chloé. Thank you so much."
"Enough already. It's not until this weekend. You said you were taking her to the zoo, right?"
"I think she'll like it."
"Well, that's what's important. As soon as you're done with that and lunch, take her home immediately, and then head over here as quickly as possible. Casual clothes are fine for a zoo trip, but you should look nice for dinner."
"Thank you again, Chlo."
"Save it, cappy. Now get outta here."
That weekend, Alya woke up early and picked up Nino on her scooter.
"Normally you're not an early riser, Nino."
"Anything for you, babe. Mind if I drive?"
"Well, I guess you know what you're doing."
"Keep your eyes closed. It's a surprise."
She chuckled, "Okay, Nino, I'll play along."
They soon reached the zoo. Alya barely noticed they stopped as she held tightly to Nino.
"As much as I'd hate to pry you off, we're here."
"The zoo? You know how much I love coming here."
"Plus it's a special place for us, no? It was where we had our first kiss…that we can remember anyway."
She kissed him, "Well here's another to remember. Now come on. I have to say hello to dad."
After a few laps around the zoo…
"Now how about we get lunch somewhere we always enjoy going?"
"Something simple you mean? Okay then, let's just get some chicken."
After a couple of hours…
"And now, my love, I'm taking you home so you can get ready for our dinner."
"Want me all dolled up, huh? Marinette should already be there to help me out with that."
He stopped at Le Grand Paris.
"What are we doing here?"
"This is where I'm getting ready. I'll pick you up later. I promise."
"I believe you. See you then."
He kept waving until the scooter was out of sight. Then, he ran inside.
Césaire apartment
When Alya got home, Marinette was already there.
"Need any help?" Marinette asked.
"That's appreciated," Alya said, "I'm used to looking good, but not fancy."
"You're going to drive Nino even more crazy than usual."
Back at the hotel…
"You didn't have to literally run here," Chloé said, "Go take a shower. Adrien should be here by the time you're done."
While she waited, Chloé lounged on the sofa and looked at her phone. She was looking for a video to watch when she got a message from Luka.
Kingsnake: I'm busy working, but I wanted to shoot you a message. I'll see you soon. Je t'aime
Queen: À bientôt, mon chérie
Chloé began softly singing to herself.
"Sweet little bumblebee,
I know what you want from me
Doo-bi-doo-bi, doo-da-da!
Doo-bi-doo-bi, doo-da-da!"
Chloé was so focused on her song that she didn't notice Zoé walking into the room.
"I got the food, Chlo…"
"Sweet little bumblebee,
More than just a fantasy
Doo-bi-doo-bi, doo-da-da!
Doo-bi-doo-bi, doo-da-da!"
She now stood where Chloé could see her.
"Are you singing a song about a bee?"
Chloé immediately sat up, "No! It was my phone."
"Somebody's happy!" Zoé said in a sing-song voice, "You must've got a text from your man."
"Shut up and give me the food."
A few minutes later, Adrien arrived.
"Hey, ladies. Ooh, food."
"Help yourself, Adrikins. Just remember why you're really here."
"I picked up and brought the clothes, like you asked."
Nino called from the bathroom, "I'm done. I'm decent."
"Adrikins, help him get ready. He has to look more than decent for his date. Especially since I'm letting him borrow the limo."
"You are?" Nino asked.
"Of course I am! You really think I'd let you and Alya walk or ride bikes or something in such nice clothes? Forget it!"
"I'm coming, Nino," Adrien said, walking to the bathroom.
Zoé was smiling at Chloé.
"What are you so happy about?"
"I just think it's funny with all the times you've said you don't care, or acted like you don't care, when deep down you had this whole thing planned. You're such a romantic."
"Just keep it to yourself, Zo."
"I don't know why you're still so secretive about it."
"Because that's just who I am. I only share certain things with certain people."
"Does that now include your king?"
"Of course."
"And you said you'd never fall in love."
"I didn't fall in love. I found it. There's a difference."
"Ready to go," Adrien said, "Doesn't he look great?"
"Now Nino here," Chloé said, "He fell in love. Alya told me about the look on his face the moment he saw her."
"Come on, cut it out," Nino said, hiding his face with his cap.
"Keep that thing off your head. Today's a special day. Let her see you clearly. Did you ask her if she's ready?"
"Yeah, she's ready. Marinette was helping her."
"Well then let's get you in that limo."
In no time at all, the limo pulled up to the Césaire apartment.
Nino: I'm here, babe.
Alya: Be right there, lover boy 3
Nino saw her walking out with Marinette.
"Whoa! Alya doesn't wear dresses that often, but when she does…"
Nino got out and held the car door open.
"First, how do I look?"
"As beautiful as the day I met you, babe."
She scratched under his chin, "You sweet talker."
"Have fun, Nino."
"Thanks, Nette. Talk to you later."
As soon as Nino was in the limo, Alya leaned against him.
"Where to, handsome?"
"We're having dinner at Le Grand Paris."
"Oh, good. I can say hello to mom."
As they entered the hotel, André happened to be there.
"M. Mayor, I didn't think you'd be here," Alya said.
"When I have free time I like to check on things here. Although it's mostly to see my daughters. Speaking of which, they said you'd be dining here this evening. Please go right on up. Mme. Césaire is expecting you."
As soon as they entered the dining room, Marlena was there to greet them.
"Baby, you look absolutely beautiful."
"Thank you, Maman. I couldn't have done it without Marinette, and some tips I remember you gave me about my hair."
"And is this handsome fellow really Nino?"
"Good evening, Mme. Césaire."
"Your father told me you were at the zoo this morning. Anyway, enough of that. Go find somewhere nice to sit, and leave dinner to me."
As they sat down, Nino was looking around, while Alya was looking right at him.
"Why so in awe of the place, Nino? We've eaten here before."
"Those were always parties. This is a proper date, Alya. It all feels so different."
That's when he felt Alya's foot against his leg, causing him to shiver.
"Just take a deep breath and relax, handsome."
"You do that to me and you expect me to relax now?"
"Just eat some bread and calm down," she said with a wink.
After dinner, they went to the roof of the hotel. They were laying on a deckchair and looking up at the stars while cuddling.
"This has been such a great day, Nino. Just being up here with you is all I need."
"Likewise, babe."
"Looking at all those lights in the city. It's just so beautiful."
He looked at her, "Yeah…beautiful."
She kissed him, "I knew you were going to say that."
"I can't imagine what life would be like without you. Everyone likes to laugh about when we first met."
"You mean when you were standing there with your mouth open and constantly stuttering? You were just so darn cute."
"Maybe when I first met you it was just an infatuation, but I know for sure now that it's love."
"I feel the same, baby."
After a few minutes of making out, they stretched and went back inside.
Mom: Ready to go, Alya?
Alya: Sure thing, Maman.
"Mom's ready to go, so I'll catch a ride with her," she kissed Nino again, "Thank you for a wonderful birthday, mezanmi."
"My pleasure, bèl."
Nino happily laid back on the nearest deckchair and smiled to himself. After a few minutes, Adrien came outside.
"Ready to go, buddy? I can see from that look on your face that you had a great time."
"Bro, it's like they say: live, laugh, love."
A week later, it was now prom night. Chloé took a while to get ready, but with Zoé's help…
"You look amazing!"
"I always look amazing," she replied, still looking at herself in the mirror.
Zoé shook her head, "This is different. This is extra special."
"Yeah, I guess it is."
"I'm so jealous of you."
"You only have to wait a year. I'll be sure to take pictures and such."
"Well, you'd better get going. I'm sure Luka can't wait to see you."
"You're gonna make me nervous."
"You've been out on a couple of dates already though."
"Like you said, this is special. What are you doing while I'm gone?"
"I invited Marinette to the hotel. Alya, Sabrina, and Kagami are supposed to show up as well, but I said they could invite anyone . We're going to play some games, watch movies, and eat junk food."
"Very good," she said, grabbing the tablet, "See you later."
"Likewise, sister dear."
While Chloé took to the limo, Zoé stood outside and waited. After a few minutes, Marinette drove up on her motorcycle.
"Hey, Zoé. Is your sister all nervous about tonight?"
"Yes and no. You look awesome on that thing, by the way. Not that there was anything wrong with the scooter."
"I know what you mean. I gave the scooter to Alya as a birthday present. She can't exactly ride on a skateboard with Nino."
"No, but that would be kinda funny."
Earlier that day, Adrien was attempting to talk to Gabriel.
"Sorry to interrupt, Père, but I'm going to the school."
"What for? It's Saturday."
"Because the band is playing at prom tonight."
"Oh…yes…the band."
"It can't all be classical music, Père."
"Just remember to keep your mask on. No reason to make it known you're associated with a, ugh, rock band."
Adrien fought back to urge to say more and went back through the door. But then, he stuck his head back into the room.
"You know, I remember Nathalie and Maman telling me that when you were in lycée you were kind of a punk."
Gabriel seized up and his eyes went wide, while Nathalie fought back a laugh.
"Have a nice day, Père."
Adrien and Placide met up with the rest of Kitty Section at the school to set up the equipment. Juleka, Rose, Ivan, and Adrien stayed there to save time and relax. Luka went back to the Liberty to await the limo he knew would pick him up. Not too long after that, the limo arrived.
"Come on! Hurry up and get in! We need to get there fast so we can let everyone see how great we both look."
Luka walked over to the limo, but stopped at the door.
"Well, what are you waiting for?"
"I need to show you something first. Can you get out real quick?"
"Pouah, fine."
She stepped out of the limo, and Luka got a look at her long legs. She was of course wearing gold strap-on high heels. Her dress was long and black, with gold trimmings, and thin straps on her shoulders. Her hair was done up in a bun, so he could see her elegant neck.
"Did you get a good look, you sneaky snake?" she asked, wriggling her hips.
She looked him up and down. He was wearing a black tuxedo suit with a white shirt underneath. His shoes were black, and his tie was the same shade of green as his hair.
"Are you done looking?" he asked with a wink.
She trailed her fingers up and down his chest, "You're such a knave."
"Just wait. I know how to get promoted back to king. Although I can't repeat parts of it in public."
"Just get in the limo," she said quickly.
In no time, they arrived at the school. Chloé stepped out carrying a rather large purse. Once inside, they saw a few other familiar people. Théo and Mireille were there as a couple. Socqueline was helping herself to the snacks. Juleka and Rose had changed into proper dresses. They were dark purple and, of course, pink, respectively.
"You look great, Jules. Likewise, Rose."
"Thanks, Luka," Juleka said, "We had a bit of help."
"Somehow I doubt it was Rose. Her taste in clothes is a little out there."
"Hey!" Rose exclaimed, "I mean it's true, but still."
"No, it was Chloé," Juleka replied.
"Really?" Luka was surprised.
"Yeah, I called her for advice."
He looked at Chloé, "You didn't tell me that."
"Well, I mean, I helped you pick out a tux, so it was only fair. It's her prom, too. I knew she'd drag Rose along with her, so I gave them a bit of advice."
Nino was also there as the DJ.
"Bonsoir, mes amis! Who's ready to dance?"
"Ready to go, Rose?"
"Let's shake it, Jule!"
The pair and several others were now out on the dance floor.
"Care to dance?" Luka asked.
Chloé scoffed, "To this ridiculous music?"
Luka said nothing, but gave her a mischievous grin.
She rolled her eyes, "Okay, fine… when and if they play a good song."
It took a few tries, but eventually Nino hit upon a song that Chloé deemed worthy of her time.
"You've got some nice dance moves, queenie."
"You'll find I'm full of surprises."
"I have no doubt."
As the song ended, Nino spoke up.
"Let's take it slow this time."
Chloé was about to go sit down, but Luka grabbed her hand.
"You're not going now, are you?"
She wordlessly put her arms around his neck, and he in turn placed his hands on her hips.
"Where did you learn how to dance like that?" he asked.
"One: I didn't just take ballet lessons. I also took a few different dancing lessons. Two: Zoé taught me some new dance moves from America. Three: believe it or not, daddy taught some older dance moves. Four: I looked up some videos online and practiced."
"You did all that?"
"I did it because I wanted to, and definitely not just because of prom."
"I believe you. I hope my dancing is adequate."
"It's fine, I guess."
After about half an hour, Luka checked his phone for the time.
"It's almost time for the show," Luka said, "I'd better go change."
"I'll be waiting," Chloé replied.
Nino set up a camera so they could show their friends the performance later. Mme. Bustier got everyone's attention.
"I hope everyone's been having a fun evening. A round of applause for our local DJ."
Nino waved as everyone clapped.
"Now, though, we have a special treat. Put your hands together for some live music by the up and coming band Kitty Section!"
All the band members were there: Luka on guitar, Juleka on bass, Ivan on drums, Adrien on keyboard, and Rose in the center with a microphone. They were all wearing more casual clothes.
"How's everyone doing this evening?" Luka asked, "I appreciate our favorite DJ, but I'm sure he won't mind a bit of live music."
"Go ahead," Nino said, "I need some snacks."
They played several songs, including at least one written by Rose, and of course the Miraculous song they wrote last year. While that was going on, Chloé went to get a table and placed it in front of the stage. She then set up her tablet.
"I wonder what they're up to?" Chloé thought.
Le Grand Paris
After Marinette arrived at the hotel, Alya arrived shortly afterwards with Aurore.
"Aurore? This is a surprise," Marinette said, "I didn't expect you to be here. You usually hang out with Mireille all the time."
"She's at prom, and I couldn't think of anything to do, so I asked Zoé if I could come over."
"I said she was more than welcome," Zoé said, "And then I asked Alya if she could pick her up. I also asked Kagami to pick up some other friends."
The Tsurugi car pulled up, and out came Kagami, Sabrina, and Mylène.
"I had a feeling you'd be here, Mylène," Alya said, "Ivan being busy with the band and all. I know the feeling. Nino's playing the DJ at the moment."
"I just hope they're taking plenty of pictures," Mylène said.
"Chloé already posted a picture of herself and Luka," Sabrina said, "She looks gorgeous. As for Luka, he looks so different in a tuxedo."
"Can we continue this conversation inside?" Kagami asked, "I'd like something to eat, and I have to prepare to destroy you all in whatever tabletop game you might choose."
"We'll see who beats who," Zoé replied.
The prom
It was now nearing the end of the prom. Chloé made a facetime call on the tablet.
Le Grand Paris
"Seriously," Zoé said, "Why do you always seem to win at this game?"
"Practice," Kagami replied.
Sabrina, Marinette, Alya, Mylène, and Aurore all laughed. Just then, the tablet beeped.
"One sec," Zoé said, "Chloé? Shouldn't you still be dancing or something?"
"Just watch and get ready for the best show ever," she replied, pointing the camera at the band.
"Girls, looks like we've got a live performance to watch."
Everyone gathered around the tablet, while Chloé ran backstage. After a few minutes…
"I'm glad to see everyone having a good time," Luka said, putting on a small microphone, "But as Mme. Bustier has reminded me, it's almost time for this evening to end. On that note, we'll have one last song for you. This one's a special request from a special someone."
"Gee, I wonder who that could be?" Alya said.
"Hey, why is there a microphone in the middle of the stage if Rose isn't singing?" Sabrina asked.
"Hey, you're right," Marinette said, "She's standing next to Juleka and holding an acoustic guitar."
"I wonder when she learned to play that?" Zoé wondered.
Luka checked his phone.
Queen: I'm ready!
Luka smiled and said, "Hit it!"
The band started to play.
"Luka's standing next to the mic," Aurore said, "Does that mean he's going to sing?"
"But he's not standing directly in the center, so who's the actual lead singer?" Mylène asked.
As if to answer her question, Chloé came out from behind the stage in a new outfit. She wore the same heels, but she was now wearing loose pants, a shirt, and her hair was down. She grabbed the microphone from the stand.
"Sometimes I imagine a world without you.
But most times, I'm just so happy that I ever found you."
Rose and Juleka now joined her.
"It's a complicated web,
That you weave inside my head.
So much pleasure with such pain.
Hope we always, always stay the same!"
Chloé and Luka were now looking at each other.
"I'm feeling the way you cross my mind.
And you save me in the knick of time.
I'm riding the highs, I'm digging the lows,
'Cause at least I feel alive!
I've never faced so many emotional days!
But my life is good!
I'm feeling you!
I'm feeling you!"
As Luka played, he and Chloé danced over to opposite ends of the stage.
"You go and then I can finally breathe in.
'Cause, baby, I know in the end, you're never leaving."
The pair danced back towards the center as Rose and Juleka joined in again.
"Well, we're rarely ever sane!
I drive you crazy and you do the same.
But your fire fills my soul!
And it warms me up like no one knows!"
This time, Adrien and Ivan also joined in.
"I'm feeling the way you cross my mind.
And you save me in the knick of time.
I'm riding the highs, I'm digging the lows,
'Cause at least I feel alive!
I've never faced so many emotional days!
But my life is good!
I'm feeling you!"
Luka took center stage as he performed an epic guitar solo, while Chloé placed the mic back so she could dance and clap her hands beside him. She then grabbed the mic again and sang the next part solo.
"I'm feeling the way you cross my mind.
And you save me in the knick of time.
I'm riding the highs, I'm digging the lows,"
Now the rest of the band, including Luka, joined in.
"'Cause at least I feel alive!
I've never faced so many emotional days!"
Nino also joined in, accompanying Adrien at his microphone. Chloé and Luka were looking at each other again.
"Oh, I'm, feeling the way you cross my mind!
And you save me in the knick of time!
I'm riding the highs, I'm digging the lows,
'Cause at least I feel alive!
I never faced so many emotional days.
But my life is good.
I'm feeling you!"
Luka responded with another guitar riff.
"I'm feeling you!"
Luka and Chloé were also dancing in sync.
"I'm feeling you!"
They spun around and stood back to back.
"Oh, I'm feeling you, whoa!"
They turned back around and the music was being played softer. Chloé sang softer as well, while looking Luka in the eyes.
"Oh, I'm feeling the way that you cross my mind.
And the way that you save me in the knick of time.
Oh, I'm feeling the way when you walk on by.
I feel light, I feel love, I feel butterflies!
I feel butterflies!"
With one last guitar riff, the song came to an end. Everyone in the building broke out into applause. Luka placed his guitar on its stand so he and Chloé could hug each other properly.
"I can't believe you talked me into doing that," she whispered to him, "That was amazing!"
"You're amazing."
She kissed him, "I know, but I love hearing you say it."
Juleka was looking at them, a confused but happy look on her face.
"You okay, Jule?" Rose asked.
"I'll probably never understand what he sees in her, but I'm glad he's happy."
Back at the hotel, the girls were also applauding.
"Wow," Alya said, "It's one thing to sing a ballade like she did at the talent show, but to sing like that…that was great."
"She's a woman of many talents," Zoé said.
One week later, Marinette and Adrien were having a date at Le Grand Paris. They were cuddling on a deckchair.
"Adrien, I've been meaning to ask you something."
"What's that, Princess?"
"I don't want to impose, and I can understand if you're unavailable, but my parents want to go on another vacation this summer."
"Oh yeah? Where to this time?"
"First to London to visit my aunt… mom's sister, that is."
"My cousin's territory, huh? Or at least it was until he and his mother moved into the mansion. What's after that?"
"Then we're going to meet up with Nonna and Papy in Italy."
"Aw, that's nice."
"So we should only be gone a week this time."
"And you'd like me to mind the store again for you, perhaps?"
"I was hoping you would. That is if you don't mind. You and the others did such a good job last time. I know my parents would appreciate it."
"Say no more, mon amour. I'd be honored."
She gave him a kiss and a hug, "You're the best."
"Yeah, it's a curse."
"Oh, and you can invite whoever you need. I'm sure Kagami will enjoy it."
"You read my mind, Princess."
Graduation was right around the corner, but there was one event that took place beforehand. It was now Nino's birthday. Before he went to sleep last night, he checked his phone.
Alya: Happy Birthday, mon cher
Nino: Thanks, gorgeous
Mec: Happy Birthday, Nino
Nino: Thanks, mec
Nette: Happy Birthday!
Nino: Thanks, Nette
Chloé: Happy Birthday or whatever (from me and Zoé)
Nino: Thanks again for…you know
Luka: Happy Birthday to my favorite DJ (Juleka says hello)
Nino: I appreciate it, Luka
Kagami: They told me it was your birthday, so, felicitations
Nino: Arigatō
After Nino woke up, he checked his phone again. A few others sent him birthday wishes, but it was Alya's text that got the most attention.
Alya: I've got a surprise for you
Nino washed up and got dressed.
As he walked out of his room, his parents and brother called out, "Happy Birthday!"
"Thanks, Maman. Thanks, Papa. Alya said she had a surprise for me."
"Surprise!" Alya shouted.
Nino managed not to fall over.
"She got you good, Nino," Noël said, laughing.
"Where did you come from?"
"I've been here for at least an hour, Nino. You're just slow."
"Well, that's certainly a surprise. As for being slow, it's my birthday. I can sleep in if I want."
"Come on! We're going out. See you later, M. et Mme. Lahiffe."
"Have a good day!" they said.
The pair went to the park and had a picnic.
"Babe, did you make this meal just for me?"
"I'd say I made it mostly for you. I was really hungry."
"Well it was delicious."
"Thanks, Nino."
He reached out and kissed her hand, "Now I think I'd like some dessert."
"I'm pretty sure I brought a piece of cake."
"No, the other kind," he replied, wiggling his eyebrows.
She pulled her hand away, "You're incorrigible!"
"Hey, come on, I am the birthday boy."
"Nino, right now we're in a public park. Please try to control yourself. Now have some of this cake."
"Well if you recommend it."
She cut off a piece of cake with the fork and held it out. Nino reached over and ate it.
"That's good. Who made it? You or Nette?"
"We both contributed. You know, Nino, I know you said this was fine, but a picnic seems like a downgrade compared to a zoo trip and an elegant dinner."
"Yeah, but I wanted to make your birthday special for you."
"I know, and I want to do the same."
"As long as I'm with you, babe, it is special."
"You're such a dork."
"I know. That's why you love me. Now how about some music?"
"Did you compose it?"
"One or two pieces. Try to see if you can guess which ones."
The two leaned against a nearby tree, each with an earbud, and held hands. After an hour or so, they got back on the scooter and just drove around for fun. They eventually reached the outskirts of the city and went for a walk.
"You're so easy to cater to, lover."
"Like I said, babe, as long as I'm with you."
They sat down, cuddled close and watched the clouds drift by. It was so peaceful and quiet that the pair dozed off. They woke up about an hour later.
"Oh my goodness," Alya said, "What time is it?"
"Time for dinner," Nino replied, not even looking at his phone.
They rode back to town and picked a simple restaurant.
"You look beautiful as always."
"Nino, I'm not even dressed up or anything."
"I said what I said. I'm a lucky man."
"Yeah, I know," she reached across the table and touched his arm, "I'm lucky, too."
They went back to the Lahiffe apartment. While his parents went out, Nino and Alya watched a movie…most of the time.
"Nino, cut it out. I thought you wanted me to actually see this movie?"
"I can't help it. You know what you do to me."
"If you remind me it's your birthday one more time, I'm going to -"
He cut her off with a passionate kiss, which she immediately gave in to. About two hours later, Nino's parents returned.
"Is that the time?" Alya said, "I'd better get home."
"Will you be okay?" Nino asked, "It's getting dark out."
"It's not like I'm walking home, babe," she replied, giving him a peck on the cheek, "I'll text you the second I get there."
"Bye, M. Lahiffe, Mme. Lahiffe."
"Be careful out there, Alya," they said.
Nino was still worried, "I don't like that she's out there on a scooter at night, even if it's really not that late."
He talked to his parents first.
"Mom, Dad, I'm kinda tired after all the fun I've had today. I think I'll turn in early."
"Sleep well, son,"
"Yes, good night, dear."
As soon as he saw the light in the living room turn off, he transformed and, after a quick look around, leapt out the window and onto the roof. He managed to find Alya and kept an eye on her from a good distance away. She was back home in no time.
Nino breathed a sigh of relief, "I feel better. I gotta get back quick. She's gonna text me soon."
He ran back to his room, de-transformed, and collapsed on his bed. That's when the text came through.
Alya: I'm home
Nino: Glad to hear it
Alya: You're a good man, M. Fox, and I thank you for the escort
Nino: What? How did you…?
Alya: Because I know you, beau. Good night 3
Nino: Good night, babe. I love you
Alya: Love you, too
Soon, it was graduation for the seniors, and summer vacation for the rest. Chloé and Luka went on another date to celebrate. They were sitting across from each other in a restaurant.
"You just couldn't wait to get me alone, huh?"
"Hey, I gave your sister enough money to go out and have fun," Chloé replied.
"I know, and I appreciate it. You know I have to tease you about it anyway. It's all part of the service."
"Speaking of, you are planning on being a rock star like your dad, right?"
"Actually…no.
"What?"
"I like playing in the band, but I never intended it to be my career."
"Then what are you going to do?"
"I want to be a luthier."
"A what now?"
"Someone who builds and repairs stringed instruments. In case you ask, no, that doesn't include pianos…or harps for that matter."
"That does seem fitting for a bard."
"I thought you'd have a bigger reaction."
"It's your life, Luka. What good does it do to complain?"
"I'm used to hearing you complain. Not hearing it is jarring."
"This is, what, the third surprise you've dropped on me since we've known each other? I know how you are when it comes to music. If your passion is working with instruments, then I don't want to stand in your way."
"That's very mature of you. I kind of wondered if you'd ask me how much it pays."
"I know for a fact that musical instruments can be quite expensive. I just don't know how often repairing them will come up in daily life. I guess your dad will name drop you, maybe?"
"Probably. He likes to do that."
"Anyway, it doesn't matter how well it pays. For two reasons. One, I have plenty of money for both of us. Two, I never cared about how much money you had."
"You already gave me your most valuable possession: your heart."
She rolled her eyes, "How cheesy can you get?"
"By the way, I wanted to thank you for donating some, but not all, of the money I'll need to buy a motorcycle."
"Everyone has a sense of pride. I know you'll find it more satisfying to put in the work. I'm just speeding it along a bit."
Her eyes went wide as she felt his hand going up and down her leg.
"I'd like to thank you more in private," he said with a wink, "Perhaps this time back at my place?"
She smiled, "I love you."
"I know."
That weekend, Adrien once again paid his father and Nathalie a visit.
"I don't mean to interrupt, Père, but I'm working that business job again this summer."
"Good to hear, Adrien."
"I'm starting early Monday morning, so if you don't see me -"
"Yes, that's fine." Gabriel replied, waving him out the door.
As Adrien was leaving, Nathalie gave Gabriel a nudge.
"Did you forget already, sir?"
"Oh, yes. There is one thing, Adrien," he called.
"Yes, Père?"
"It's about your friend, Mlle. Dupain-Cheng. Is she free?"
"She's actually out of town right now. She went on a vacation with her parents, but they'll be back next week."
"Ah, very well. You seem to be close with all these so-called friends of yours. I'd like for you to pass a message on to her."
"Of course, Père. What is it?"
"I'm going to offer her an internship."
"Really?"
"Yes."
"You?"
Gabriel wasn't sure how to react to that, so he just continued.
"I trust you'll let her know as soon as possible? I wish to speak with her as soon as she returns."
"I'll tell her right away, Père. I know she'll be excited."
Adrien and Placide went to the bakery to deliver the news.
"An internship?" Marinette gasped.
"Took him long enough, huh?"
"That sounds wonderful, dear," Sabine said.
"That'll put you one step closer to being a professional," Tom added.
"He'll wait for you to get back from vacation," Adrien explained, "He must really want you brought on board, because normally he's not very patient."
"I'll see him first thing when we get back. Thanks again for looking after the place for us."
"You've certainly been improving your skills, son," Tom said.
"Don't forget to pay a visit to Master Fu," Sabine said, "You may not be able to cook food like me, but someone should stop by there."
"You can count on it, Mme. Cheng."
"Now that's settled, I see you planned a lunch date, Adrien."
"Oh, yeah. I thought I'd pick something up for myself and Marinette."
"That's fine. Now why don't you relax upstairs?" Tom said, "We'll let you know when it's time for dinner."
"Thanks, Maman. Thanks, Papa."
Marinette led the way upstairs. Once there, they sat down and ate.
"Are you okay, Princess? I know this is a big surprise."
"It's not so much the internship itself, so much as it's…well…"
"The theory that my father might be Le Papillon?"
"I know you have to live with the guy, and you've been okay, but you and me under the same roof?"
"You think it's a tad risky?"
"Actually, the whole supervillain thing isn't the only reason it's risky. There's also the fact that your father doesn't know we're dating. We have to act completely professional. It doesn't matter how tempting it might be to spend time together."
"What? You mean I can't do this?"
Adrien moved behind her, hugged her, and began nuzzling her neck.
"Absolutely not. Bad kitty."
"I thought you liked it when I'm bad?"
"Be serious," she said, trying to sound stern, "Who knows what he'll do if he finds out like this."
He began kissing her neck, "I can make something up."
She turned to look at him, "Now you're just being crazy."
"You knew that already, Princess. If he was to catch me doing this," he gave her a kiss on the lips, "I'd have the perfect explanation."
"Oh yeah? Like what?"
"I wasn't kissing her. I was whispering in her mouth."
She lightly slapped him on the face.
"For someone who dresses like a cat, you sure do act like a big, dumb dog sometimes."
"Well then it's a good thing you're so smart," he replied, booping her nose.
Meanwhile…
"Mother, I know carrying around that bokken is a matter of pride for you, but have you ever thought about getting a proper cane? At least for part of the time. Or why not a seeing-eye dog? If you don't want to bother with a real dog, then why not purchase a robot dog?"
"Mind your own business, child. Now where are you going?"
"Do you recall that summer job I had last year? I took it again this year. I didn't think you'd mind."
"Anything that keeps you busy. Summer shouldn't be wasted."
"Thank you, Mother."
After Kagami left, Tomoe began to think.
"Hmm, a robot dog."
A few hours later…
"Dinnertime, kids," Sabine called, "And we have a guest."
"I didn't think she'd be here already," Adrien said.
The pair went downstairs to see…
"Kagami," Marinette said, "Great to see you here again."
"Always a pleasure."
"Have a seat, kids," Tom said.
"Been keeping up with your art class?" Sabine asked, "Marinette mentioned it."
"Yes, thank you. I understand you're a bit of an artist yourself, Mme. Cheng."
"Oh, well, it's a hobby."
"I brought my work to get your opinion, and yours as well, Marinette."
"Well, it's not exactly my area, but I'll give Nathaniel and Marc a call so you can talk."
"I'd appreciate it."
"I understand it's your birthday next month."
"Too bad mother doesn't seem to remember."
"Oh…I'm sorry to hear that."
"I'm trying to look on the bright side. Since she's been distracted lately, she didn't care that I was out of the house working again."
"Well, now that we've finished dinner," Tom said, "How about a refresher course?"
"I'd like that," Adrien said.
"That would be helpful," Kagami said.
Tom and Sabine made a few macarons.
"And as we say, voilà!"
Adrien tried one, "Delicious as ever, M. Dupain."
"Do you ever mix in recipes from your birthplace, Mme. Cheng?" Kagami asked.
"I actually taught Tom how to mix rice into certain recipes, just to name a few tricks. His father didn't approve of changing things at first, but once he got a taste, and Tom's mother gave him a talking to, he came around."
Tom and Sabine regaled the kids with tales about their family until it was time to go to bed.
"We've got to wake up fairly early tomorrow," Sabine said, "Not as early as last time since London is just a train ride away."
"Just early enough that we make it by lunch time, right, my dear?"
"Exactly, Tom."
Placide took the sofa, Adrien had a sleeping bag for the floor next to the sofa, and Kagami had a sleeping bag for the floor of Marinette's room.
"Feel free to use my bed while I'm away, Kagami," Marinette said, "Unless you have to compete for it or something."
"Last time it was occupied by the Bourgeois sisters."
"Chloé was using my bed? What did she say?"
"If I remember correctly, Zoé told me that Chloé said, now I know why Dupain-Cheng is always late. I wouldn't want to leave this bed either."
Marinette now had a big smile on her face.
"Good night, Kagami."
"Good night, Marinette."
That morning, Adrien, Kagami, and Placide waved the Dupain-Cheng family goodbye. Chloé, Zoé, and Sabrina came by with lunch, and later after that, Nino and Alya stopped by. Luka was working, but he managed to make a pitstop by the bakery to say hello.
"Working hard for the money, huh, M. Roi?"
"I'm this close to buying that motorcycle, and then you can drool over how amazing I look all you want."
"Watch it, music man, or I'm gonna be the one driving whatever piece of junk you buy, and I'll make you sit in a sidecar."
He simply smiled, but then pointed off to the distance.
"Hey, what's that?"
Chloé looked around in the direction he pointed. She was surprised to feel him kiss her cheek.
"Call you later," he said, biking away.
"You win this round, Couffaine."
As she walked back into the bakery…
"Are you done flirting, Chlo?"
"Shut up, Zoé!"
That afternoon, they all watched a movie. Later, Luka arrived with pizza for everyone. That evening, Luka, Nino, and Alya left, while the others went to the same sleeping spots as before. Come Monday morning, things went according to routine. Everyone woke up early, even Chloé (although she complained), and got right to work. Alya was there at 4AM on the dot, with Nino dragging along. Business went smoothly, and if any complaints arose, Chloé took care of them very quickly. Luka stopped by now and then for a delivery.
"Here's the order, delivery boy."
"Thanks, Chlo. I also brought something for you."
"Oh, goody."
"Close your eyes."
She did so, and then he kissed her cheek. Before she could react, he cycled away. Zoé poked out the door.
"Hey, Chlo, you probably shouldn't flirt with the delivery boy in public like that."
"Don't make me hurt you."
Around noon, Adrien motioned for Chloé to come into the back.
"Just like last time, Chlo. You can get some more sleep if you patrol tonight."
"And will the fox be joining me just like last time?"
"I thought this time I'd alternate who partners up with you. Tonight, though, yeah, it's the fox. I already told Nino he could pass out on the sofa."
"Fine, then I'm going back to sleep."
That night, Apireine and Zorrua went on patrol.
"I noticed that ever since you and the snake got together, you seem to be a lot more…musical."
"What? Just because I sang a song to confess my feelings, and sang a love song at prom, and sing to myself when I feel especially happy? Nope, I don't see it."
"Ha ha, very funny. Turtle and I are the same way. Ever since we got together, it seems like our lives involve more singing and dancing."
"I'm sure if the ladybug were here, she'd say something sappy about the power of love or whatever."
"It's true, though, isn't it?"
"Yeah, but I'm not giving her the satisfaction of being right."
The next day went by as before, but to Chloé's surprise, when she woke up later than everyone else, Zoé was still in bed as well.
"What are you still doing here?"
"Adrien asked me to go on patrol with you tonight."
"So that's what he meant. Fine by me."
That night, the pair were flying around the city.
"You have no idea how good this feels. I don't mind patrolling with the fox, but he can't keep up if I'm flying."
"Aw, so you missed me?"
"I guess that's one way of putting it."
Bateleur started doing elaborate flips and turns and dives through the air.
"Don't show off."
"I'm not showing off. I'm self-demonstrating. This is how I got my name."
The next night, Zorrua was back on patrol.
"I wonder why that butterfly guy has been so quiet?" Zorrua asked.
"He seems to do that often. Maybe he needs time to come up with new ideas. Plus, I understand the turtle probably made a few too many close to accurate guesses on her blog."
"You really think so? Do you have an idea who he is?"
"The only ones who ever really think about that are the ladybug, the cat, and the turtle, but I have a pretty good idea, yes. Don't you?"
"Yeah, I think I do. As my turtle would say, though, we have no proof. Making baseless accusations would only make us look crazy."
The night after that, it was Bateleur again.
"Do you think that butterfly jerk has been coming up with a new plan?"
"No doubt about that," Apireine replied, "In fact, I'm sure he's starting to ask for suggestions. Eventually he's going to get fed up and start sending out Akuma like crazy."
"You sound so sure."
"It's the next logical step. We may not know what he wants, but if he wants it badly enough, at some point he's going to pull out all the stops. When that day comes, we'd better be ready."
"If he was so smart, he'd be more afraid of you."
"There's a difference between knowledge and wisdom."
Friday night, Apireine got a surprise.
"Hello, My Queen," Vipèrion said with a bow.
"Kingsnake? What are you doing here?"
"What else? I'm here to patrol with you. Try not to get distracted."
"I never get distracted. What do you say we try sparring?"
"As you wish."
As the two stood on opposite ends of a roof…
"Hey, wait a minute!"
"What?"
"All those times we hung out together and all you ever said to me was, as you wish, were you referencing that movie?"
"Uh…maybe?"
"You're such a nerd."
Late Saturday evening, the family returned. Everyone left except for Adrien, Kagami, and of course Placide.
"I hope you had a fun trip, Princess."
"You should've seen the looks on my grandparents' faces when I told them about the motorcycle."
"Let me guess. Grandma was overjoyed, while grandpa looked cranky."
"Got it in one."
"Your grandparents sound delightful," Kagami said.
"They really are. So when should I go see your father?"
"He said he wanted to see you as soon as possible. You're not worried about the supervillain thing, are you?"
"I'm sorry, what?" Kagami asked.
"Oh, right, I don't think we ever actually came out and said it. We think my dad is secretly Le Papillon."
"It's so obvious that it hurts. Where did this come from?"
"Years ago, my dad commissioned Master Fu, the very same guy who runs the massage parlor, to translate an ancient grimoire for him that pertains to the Miraculous."
"I see, but as the saying goes, knowing it and proving it are two different things."
"I'm afraid so. Anyway, is that why you seem nervous, Princess?"
"Yes and no. Even if he wasn't a possible terrorist, he's still an intimidating person."
"I won't deny that."
"What time should I go talk to him? What if he's changed his mind?"
"He hasn't changed his mind. He would've said something. Just go there tomorrow around noon, have a chat, and he'll probably tell you to be there Monday morning."
"Meanwhile, you'll be here with your summer job."
"I can find time to pop in and out, I'm sure. I can just tell father I'm on lunch break or something. You can always send me a message or call me."
She hugged him.
"Thanks, My Prince. Thanks to you, too, Kagami. When and if things get serious, I'm glad you're on our side. Bring it in for a hug."
She gladly did so, "What are friends for, Marinette?"
