Chapter 5 Journey

-(The store) Cain

Having to cover myself in zombie guts again, made me scared that my wound could get infected but I had no choice. I covered the bandage with what was left of my shirt as I gutted the former employee; the zombie that tackled me to the ground. Poor guy really, there was a bite mark on his arm, but why did he leave the door unlocked if he was there to be safe?

"Cain. You ready." Rick "yeah" I stood up and I approached the store door where Rick was waiting, we'd already take down the bells from the door. "you sure you got more bags at the police station rick?" I asked, our bags, plastic or otherwise were full with almost all the non perishables and heavy as fuck. "We'll go to Morgans house, place the food, then go back and get the guns from the police station tomorrow, there's also cars we could take to Atlanta" he looked at my bandage for a second longer "and maybe some stitches too"

I nodded as he opened the door to the outside, there was the fourth zombie from before outside but she just ignored us as we walked to Morgans home. well the journey was as uneventful as it was short, thank god because this shit was heavy. Then a thought came to my head "how are we going to tell Morgan, we killed zombie jenny?" I asked Rick, we were almost at the front of the door, "we just … tell him, I just hope he takes it well." he said as he knocked on the door lightly. Footsteps sounded from behind the door as Morgan checked the peephole.

Upon seeing it was us Morgan opened the door, I ran to the storage room where we keep the food and water, and all but dropped the bags I was holding, and my backpack to the floor. "What happened to you, Cain" Morgan asked concerned as I ripped off my bloody shirt. "Zombie got me good, but no bites thankfully." I answered as I started wiping blood of off myself with the towels we had.

I went to the mattress on the floor to relax for a bit, Morgan placed his hand against my forehead before I could though."no fever" he muttered as he went back to cooking, leaving me and Rick to our devices, while Duane slept so we I went to the unoccupied mattress, and relaxed for a bit. While Rick sat in a corner, looking at the ceiling.

-(15 minutes later)

Morgan sat across me as we sat down to eat with Duane sitting next to Rick. "Morgan I gotta tell you something." I said as I Looked down at the food. Morgan looked at me for a minute, and place his fork near his plate, as, Rick, and Duane did the same. "Outside, I killed jenny." Morgan stared at me while his eyes widened, Rick was quick to butt in "Under my orders" he said as he looked at Morgans direction as well, "y-you put her out of her misery." he said it like he was convincing himself, "th-thank you, but can I just have a moment." Morgan, and Duane looked like they were going to cry, Duane followed him as he went upstairs.

Rick looked at me for a minute, but eventually followed them, I didn't because I don't even know what to say to Morgan, in hindsight I should have waited for after dinner. I sighed as I placed the food back in the pot. My appetite had been thoroughly killed.

-(6 hours later) Day time

Outside there were car sounds the whole day. Did the broadcast just happen to air yesterday, I thought as I stared at the wall next to my mattress, hearing cars driving and people getting eaten wasn't fun for his sleep he'd only managed 3 hours. Before he woke up to the first persons screams.

"whatever" I mumbled as I sat up, today we'd go to the police station, and get a car to go to Atlanta, if nothings wrong then we'd find shelter. My mind wandered as I started dressing, my bandage had already been replaced an hour ago, the wound looked much better than it did yesterday, seems like I won't need stitches thank god.

After I dressed I went downstairs to Rick, Morgan, and Duane. Looks like we woke up at the same time. "Rick" I called as I went to the storage room to grab my backpack. "We should go now" I said as I wore it and went to the front door. "Go we're not coming with you." Morgan said, he looked like hell, and so did Rick. Speaking of, did he tell them about Atlanta yesterday?

Rick nodded as he came to the storage room, and wore his backpack "you sure Morgan?" he asked as he looked at both of us." "yeah we'll meet you at Atlanta later." he said as he went to the mini library to grab a book. Well looks like that answers my question. I thought as Rick, and I looked outside, to find … no zombies? Looks like most of them had been drawn to the noise yesterday. I spied a few corpses on the ground, some were rotten looking, while others looked fresh. Survivors I realized, not like they're surviving now.

"you think its safe out there Cain?" he asked as we went to the front door "it seems like it, lets keep the noise to a minimum, and cover ourselves in guts, just In case though." I said as I opened the door.

10 minutes later and we were at the police station, covered in zombie gut. We went inside the building. Inside was, an average looking police station, of course. But the back of the building was where the things we were looking for were stored, Guns, uniforms, warm showers, and most importantly cars.

"Alright, listen up Cain" Rick said as we entered the employee only area, "I'm going to take some of the guns, and a car, to go to Atlanta, are you coming with or staying with Morgan?" Rick asked as he opened up the armory, some of it was missing. "I'm coming with you." I said as I packed up the guns and ammo into my backpack.

-(15 minutes later)

A warm shower later, some more bandaging, and it was a go. Rick used his keys to take a police car, although it was strange how there were no zombies as we drove to Morgan I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. I knocked on the front door, Morgan opened it a couple of seconds later, and I handed him a bag. "Whats this?" he said as he placed the bag down inside. "Guns in case you need them" Morgan looked at me for a minute ",and this too." I handed him a walkie talkie "those things are long range so you should be able to hear us from Atlanta, Rick said he'll turn his every day at dawn." Morgan took the walkie talkie. "alright, see you at Atlanta." he said as I walked in, grabbed some food, and drink for the road, "see you" I replied as I walked out with the supplies.

A few minutes later, and it was just me, and Rick on the road. Listening to the radio.

-(1 hour later)

"y'know" I said as Rick was still driving "I didn't think the world could go to shit in 1 week, let alone ever" "yeah well I didn't expect to wake up to you crying." he chuckled as I exclaimed in indignation. "oh whatever, do you know when we'll reach Atlanta?" "There's at least two more hours, didn't help that spice town was in the middle of nowhere." he said as we drove by a couple of wrecks seemed like somebody was clearing the cars on their way to still, why are there no zombies yet? Not even a single one? And with the trope of most shelters being destroyed I had a bad feeling about this.
