"And look at that spectacle!" Oobleck's voice sounded over the speakers.
The crowd cheered as they watched Team RWBY in the tournament. I mean, can I blame them? That was sick!
"Good shit, Yang!" I pumped my fist as I sat back down.
Yang pointed finger guns at me as she flexed. I clapped as Jaune held out the popcorn for me. I took a fist full, turning toward the team. Nora slumped with a giant grin as Pyrrha looked over Jaune's shoulder.
"You seem excited." She tilted her head with her brow raised. "Have you never been to the festival?"
"All the ones in Vale, yeah." I watched Ruby's team pose a bit. "I couldn't go to the other ones, like in Haven. Plus, I couldn't be in the crowd."
Jaune nodded. "Is it because of your split-"
Ren covered his mouth as I gave him a blank look. He winced at himself, looking at me apologetically. I waved him off as I looked back towards the Colosseum.
"Yup." I watched Rose's team leave, heading toward the closest exit. "I had a view up where the announcers were, but man, this is so much better!"
"Man, I would kill for a view like theirs!" Nora stood, her eyes watching the announcer's box.
"Come on." I motioned the team to follow. "Let's go congratulate them."
They agreed, which I kind of regret suggesting. There are too many damn people. I mean, I love it, but it sucks when we're all pushing for the same exit. It didn't take long, but Nora wasn't helping with her idea to move through the crowd. I didn't want to start a mosh pit. Have I ever been in one?
The walk toward the fairgrounds was more challenging, Jaune leading us to a separate part of the place and speaking of Jaune.
"Jaune," His head turned with a head tilt. "What did you do with that dress you wore at the dance?"
His ears reddened, his eyes downcasted. "It was one of my sisters. She let me borrow it as long as I sent her pictures."
I snickered a bit. "Man, I wish I had siblings. That would be cool as hell."
"Trust me, it's not as cool as you think." I punched his shoulder.
"Trust me. I don't care."
He smiled, lightly rubbing his shoulder. "Well, if you ever meet them, you can have them. Don't tell them I said that if you do."
I smirked. "Your secret's safe with me."
"What was your life like August?" Pyrrha suddenly asked.
"Mine?" Some memories washed up a bit. "Nothing much, after the Fang, I kind of was just stuck at Beacon."
"Wait, they wouldn't let you leave?" Nora propped herself on my shoulder. "Like a prisoner?"
"No, I could leave any time I want. I just didn't have anything else. Plus, I didn't want to miss any of Port's barbeques."
"Barbeques?" Nora practically drooled.
"Oh yeah, the best." Man, I'm kind of craving it now. "He showed me some of his recipes. If you guys want, we can have a barbeque once the festivals over."
"Why not now?" Nora shook me as Ren took her away.
"I'm curious, too." Ren voiced. "Why not soon?"
"Well, for one, I've rarely ever had festival food, and for two, the festival is where I'm the busiest. I would love to have everyone over once I'm free."
He nodded. "I see. If that's the case, can I make food too?"
"Are you good?" I crossed my arms as I walked, facing him.
"The best!" Nora chimed in.
"I'll have to side with her, August." Jaune stood beside Ren, an arm wrapped around him.
I glanced toward Pyrrha. "I'm guessing…"
She smiled, nodding as she joined her team. "He is excellent. Especially with seafood."
A laugh escaped me. "All right, I'll bite. Yeah, you can join me. Though, you'll have to come with me to buy the groceries."
A small smile appeared on Ren as Nora watched with a giant grin, her eyes not leaving Ren's face. "Deal, then."
I held out my hand, only for my back to bump into someone. I stumbled, catching myself. I held a palm up, stopping Jaune from catching me. I glanced back, seeing a new face. Man, this guy loves the color gray.
"Ah shit, sorry about that." His eyes landed on me, his mouth open to speak.
"Don't worry about it." Emerald suddenly popped up from behind him.
"Emerald." I smiled, now recognizing the guy. "This is your teammate, Mercury, right?"
His brows furrowed, only for Emerald to elbow him. He winced, glancing toward her. "Yeah, that's me. How'd you know?"
I beat Emerald to it. "I'm the student's assistant in Beacon. I read your Haven file."
"Oh, you're the assistant my team told me about." He held out his hand.
I shook it as I looked down at him. I couldn't find the other two, though. I pulled my hand away as Jaune spoke.
"I know, right?" He stopped beside me. "His eyes are kind of terrifying."
"What?" The both of them said in unison.
"Ah, sorry!" Jaune held up his arms in defense. "I just noticed that you were staring at his eyes."
Emerald eyes widened, a light laugh escaped her. "Oh, right, sorry about that."
"Don't worry about it; you ain't the first." I shrugged as we stopped past them. "Oh, right. Have you guys seen Team RWBY?"
Mercury snickered, Emerald glaring at him. "Yeah, I saw them. They went to eat at one of the stalls."
She pointed toward a direction. I made out the color of Ruby's cape. I shook my head as I gave a thumbs-up to the two.
"Thanks for the help!" The rest said their byes as we walked.
Passing the stalls reminded me of Menagerie. The vendors that were along the streets selling grilled eel. Man, they were delicious.
'Where are we?'
Oh, right. How was your nap?
'Okay.'
That's good. We're at the festival grounds. We were meeting up with Ruby's team for now.
'Where's Blush?'
He's here; he just didn't really care for the festival.
'Oh, okay.'
I smiled, overhearing the commotion as we neared the stall they were at. I watched as Blake's bowl of fish was taken away? A laugh erupted from my chest as Pyrrha spoke.
"Maybe I can help?" She held out her card.
"Pyrrha!" Ruby cheered as her eyes landed on me. "August, you're here!"
"Yup." I high-fived Roses as Yang spoke.
"You don't have to do that." Blake appeared beside her, eyes frantic.
"But she can!"
"How about we join you for a bite to eat?" Jaune suggested.
I pull my card out, beating Pyrrha to the clerk. "Nah, I got it."
"Are you sure?" Pyrrha awkwardly put her card away as we sat at the counters.
"I promised to cover it, didn't I?" I sat beside Blake as the man returned the big bowl of fish. "Is it just fish?"
Blake went poker face. "Yeah, why?"
"Nothing," I ordered my bowl, which didn't take long.
"Meat, huh?" Blake rolled her eyes.
I pointed to her bowl. "Better than fish!"
"Not even close!" She defended, hugging her bowl.
Our eyes met, sparked with passion for our favorite food. We huffed, facing away from each other. I bit into the beef, tasting the flavor and fat. They were lightly salted with a hint of onion. There's even a bit of butter in it; this guy knows his stuff!
"Oh yeah!" Roses exclaimed. "What was the news that you were going to tell us? You didn't get a chance to tell us since we were the first match."
Weiss turned toward me, her arms crossed. "That's right, you brought us out here for news."
I turned toward them, my teeth already in another piece. Weiss grimaced at the sight, causing me to tear the piece away and finish it. I laughed, scratching the back of my head. My gaze turned away and into the festival grounds.
"Ah, sorry." I cleared my throat, remembering the whole point of why I invited them. "So, I have news about my status here at Beacon."
Weiss leaned forward a bit, as did Pyrrha and Yang. "Go on."
"This will be my last year here at Beacon Academy." The mixed expressions caused a few chuckles to escape me. "I'll be graduating this year, meaning that I won't be staying here anymore."
Nora leaned over the table, fist slamming into the counter. "What! But the barbeque! We just talked about it!"
Ruby sped toward me, arms wrapped around my neck, practically choking me. "You're leaving? What about us!"
Pyrrha's mouth hung open, eyes darting from me and her bowl before she finally spoke. "Does that mean you'll be visiting instead of staying?"
I snapped my finger. "Bingo. I'll visit; hell, I even have your numbers, so I'll still call. So, yes, we are still definitely having that barbeque."
Nora pumped her fist as Pyrrha smiled. I glanced at Ruby, who looked slightly defeated. I ruffled her hair, causing her to glance up.
"I'll be visiting, Roses." She slumped.
"But it won't be as cool as you being here." She suddenly threw her hands up. "How else am I supposed to understand Oobleck's lessons!"
I pointed toward Weiss. "You have her?"
Weiss waved her arms, a scoff leaving her. "Absolutely not. Do you know how hard it is to teach her basic dust calculations?"
"Thanks, Weiss!" Ruby hugged her.
Weiss pushed back as Yang piped up. "So that'll mean you're traveling, right? Where are you going to go first?"
I shrugged, eating another piece. "Probably Vacou? I've always wanted to visit Shade Academy."
Jaune spoke his disinterest. "The desert?"
I rolled my eyes. "I heard it looks pretty cool. Who knows, though, might want to go back to Menagerie."
Blake's eyes snapped up to me. "How come?"
"I miss the beach and the stalls." Man, how different would it look now? "It's been years since I last been there. Yeah, the Fang is there, but I just want to see the place again."
"Send us pictures," Yang said, a smirk on her face. "Keep us updated man."
"Deal, now let's eat." I motioned toward our bowls. "It's getting colder."
Damn, was that a great meal. I kinda want seconds, but I feel stuffed. The others were in the same boat. I laugh a bit, watching Jaune suffer. I point at him as he heaves a bit.
"Why did you eat three bowls?" I lay my head down, letting a few chuckles go.
"It was good." Was his only explanation.
I don't blame him. "Was it wise for us to eat before a match?"
Pyrrha patted Jaune's back, the others having mixed arguments. I stood from the chair, glancing at the grounds. Suddenly, the speakers sounded.
"Team JNPR." Oobleck's voice came from it. "Team JNPR, you've been summoned to the Colosseum. Fifteen minutes ago. Please arrive quickly for your battle."
I turned toward the team, seeing the various expressions on their faces. "Well? You guys better start going! I want to see the match!"
I ushered them, a grin plastered on my face. Jaune groaned as I helped him up. Ruby helped as Nora badgered me about when the barbeque was gonna happen. After RWBY's match, I'm excited for this match! The stadium began to fill up, so we picked out spots as I saw Team JNPR. I saw their opponents, so I'm rooting hard. Weiss sat beside me as she huffed, roughly putting her phone away.
"You okay?" A scowl appeared on her face.
"I'm fine." Her words came out as annoyed.
"Ah, sorry then." I faced away, hearing her sigh.
"No," She leaned back slightly. "Just family drama."
I hummed, watching as the two teams face off. "How bad?"
I held out a bag of popcorn to her; she slightly shook her head. "That's the problem, I don't know."
I lightly bumped her shoulder. "Eh, you're not in Atlas. Who cares? I say, let's give our friends support."
She turned toward me with a confused look as I stood up. I loudly cheered as Jaune blocked a strike. Yang and Ruby watched me as they joined. Blake smiled, giving a slight cheer. Weiss's face flushed with embarrassment but she clapped as she raised her voice.
"G-Go Team JNPR!" Yang laughed as Weiss hid her face behind her hands. "Why did I do that?"
I grabbed her wrist, pulling her hand away as I shoved the bag of popcorn in her face. "Relax! Try some popcorn; it's actually buttered good."
Weiss reluctantly grabbed a piece, chewing with a playful glare. The match was something that I'll try to remember forever. Same with RWBY's. I took a few videos along with Ruby's team. There are some goofy poses and a nice zoom-in on Nora's quadra kill. We screamed and cheered as they won the match. I pumped my fist and waved toward them. Some people left, thank god, as I waved over the team as they sat beside us.
"Good shit, Jaune!" I slapped his back as I shook him from side to side.
"Thanks, man." He sat as Ren sat beside me.
"Who's participating next?" He took some of the popcorn I offered.
The announcers took the word out of my mouth, signifying Team SSSN's up next.
'Sun's team?'
Oh, right. We watched as the team began to assemble.
Ozpin held his head, massaging it as he watched the footage of the matches. Even if it was brief, he could see August in the crowd. Ozpin's been in his office, creating and updating August's status in Beacon. After this year, he'll be on his own path. He knows he'll do some good in the world, even if it's as far away from her. Glynda entered the office, placing a folder with August's picture.
"There's his credentials." She looked toward his screen. "His new ID and huntsmen's license. After the year, he'll be on his own."
Ozpin nodded, watching the footage. "Does he have to go?"
"Pardon?" Glynda raised a brow. "He needs to. He will do so much more good than from being cooped up in this academy."
"What if something happens to him on his path?" Ozpin questioned, the neutral expression not breaking away.
"We must believe he'll be fine and prepared for the dangers." Glynda's neutral expression battled Ozpin's.
The two stared at each other for what felt like minutes. The silence was loud, all for the tiny clicks of the gears echoing in the room. As much as Ozpin wanted to defend his ideas, this was the best action. His entire time here in Beacon was to prepare him for this exact situation, and that bothers Ozpin. Ozpin sighed, facing away from the assistant. Glynda let off a quiet breath she didn't know she was holding in.
"Of course, you're right." He swiped away the screen. "I'll begin to work on his exit after the festival."
Glynda nodded, glancing at her scroll. "Ironwood agreed on a meeting. "Though, we can only pray that he sees our views."
Ozpin watched as the small fireworks could be seen in the stadium. The match concluded, meaning students will return to their dorms.
"One can only hope."
"Wait, at least let us catch up!" I called as Ruby and I chased after Weiss.
She continued, though, ignoring Ruby's groan. She finally stopped as we arrived at one of the docking pads in Beacon. An Atlesian bullhead was docked as Ruby let out a couple of pants. I slowed down, rubbing her back.
"Who did we run here for?" Ruby huffed as she stood.
"Winter." Weiss's face didn't falter.
Ruby and I shared a look. "Wait, your sister?"
The doors opened, followed by a group of those Atlas bots. I read about them—a whole army of them, powered by dust or something. I never really liked that stuff; I've seen too many movies. They marched then separated, creating a path as who I'm guessing is Weiss's sister, the resemblance is uncanny, began to walk down the ramp. I could feel Weiss's excitement, judging from the way her hands subtly shook.
"Winter!" Weiss shouted, her feet already moving.
We ran after her again, much to Ruby's dismay. We caught up, seeing her sister glance back at us. She turns toward us, a hardened look plastered on her face. We stopped as Weiss began speaking again.
"Winter, I'm so happy to see you!" Quickly, Weiss changed her attitude. "Oh! Your presence honors us."
I glance away, feeling forcing down a chuckle as Winter spoke, glancing around. "Beacon. It's been a long time. The air feels different."
Weiss opened her mouth as Ruby spoke. "I mean, it is fall, so it's probably colder."
Weiss and I smacked the back of Ruby's head, letting Weiss compose herself. "So, what are you doing here?"
"Classified." Okay, not a talker. Gotcha.
"Oh, right. Well, how long are you staying?"
"Classified." She answered again, this time eyeing me.
Ruby and I shared a look as Weiss continued. "Of course."
An awkward pause hung in the air, one that sent shivers down my spine. Before I or Weiss could say anything, Ruby opened her mouth.
"Well, this is nice. I think." I couldn't help but facepalm.
"You're going to love it here!" Weiss tries to save the moment. "I know you travel a lot, but so much of Beacon is different from Atlas! Vale too. The government and school are completely separate; can you believe it!"
"I am more than familiar with how this kingdom handles bureaucracy." She raised her chin, looking down at Weiss. "That is not why I came."
Weiss flinched back, bowing a bit. "Right! I'm sorry."
"Nor did I come to watch my own blood fail so miserably in battle, but I have no choice in the matter."
"But, we won?" Weiss defended.
"Only a novice would refer to that as a victory." I felt a bit offended there. "I counted three miss strikes."
"I mean, it is harder to hit actual people than machines." I almost immediately cursed myself as the words slipped.
Her eyes locked onto me as if trying to pierce through me. "As I said, novice."
"I mean, he's not." Ruby defended but quickly hid behind me as Winter turned her attention to her.
She turned back to me, eyes trailing along.
'I get it.'
"A faunus." No hostility in her eyes, just observation.
She turned her attention toward Weiss again. "How are you, Weiss?"
"Oh, wonderful." There's the superiority in her tone again. "Academically, I'm at the top of my class, with excellent grades. However, I'm currently rising in the ranks of-"
Winter shut the show down with a swift smack to the head. "Silence you boob! I didn't ask about your ranking! I asked how you've been. Are you eating properly? Are you picking up any hobbies? Are you making new friends?"
"Well," She motioned toward us. "There's Ruby and August."
Ruby snickered, earning a chuckle from me. "Ha, boob."
"I see." She eyed the both of us. "So this is the leader you wrote of along with the student assistant. How appropriately…underwhelming."
All right, there was no need for that. "Thanks, I guess?"
"Greetings to you both." She turned toward me again. "I wish to thank you for taking an interest in my sister."
"Interest?" Weiss shot a glare toward me, pink dusting her face again.
"Oh, uh, yes." Ruby awkwardly answered. "Of course. The honor is in my, uh, court!"
"I have business with the general and your headmaster." Her face relaxed. "But seeing as I'm early. Why don't you take me to your quarters?"
"Really?" Weiss's eyes widened; it kind of reminded me of a guinea pig.
"Yes, I wish to inspect them to make sure they are up to my personal standards." They began to walk past us as I glanced at the time.
"Of course." Weiss led her away. "Just so you're aware, the bunk beds only look unstable."
"Bunk…beds?" I snickered, seeing the confused look on her face.
"I'll, uh, catch up later-I mean!" Ruby fumbled her words a bit. "I will, uh, reconvene with-"
I swatted Ruby's head. "That's enough. I'll catch you later, too."
"Huh?" She looked at me. "Where are you going?"
"I'm going to check on my equipment." I gave a two-finger solute. "I'll be training tomorrow, so I won't be watching the matches."
"What? That's so lame!" I shook my head as I made my way to the dorm.
That's nineteen consecutive hits. I pulled the magazine out, seeing the last bullet. The previous target moved from side to side, though steadily. I guess that's enough for now. I look around, seeing the empty casings scattered around me. This is going to be a pain to clean up.
'Missed four shots.'
I hung my head. Really? Couldn't you congratulate me on being better than before? I stop, feeling a laugh in my heart. Did you just laugh?
'Better start cleaning.'
'Oh my god, he did!'
I rolled my eyes, placing Content on the table. I put the mag beside it as I began to clean it. This feels so much smoother than before; I'll have to treat Ruby to something. Speaking of Ruby, shouldn't her team be up in the duo match? A creak froze my movement. I tilted my head back, watching a student peeking in.
Oh, she's a part of Emerald's team, right? "Oh, is there something you need?"
Her head tilted, a smile relaxed on her face as she continued her way to me. I turned, looking down at her. Wait, isn't her team in a match right now?
"Shouldn't you be giving your team support?" No response.
She continued until she was right in front of me. Her green eyes looked up, a smirk showing her canine. I mentally facepalm, remembering the line of text under ID. She was mute.
"Right, forgot you don't talk." I motioned toward the door. "Well, you can't really be here. I'll escort you out so you don't miss your team's ma-"
I leaned my head back, barely dodging a fist. She's pretty fast. I raised my arm, blocking another strike. The smirk was still on her face as her foot almost grazed my chin. I grabbed her ankle and wrist quickly, tossing her a decent distance away. She landed gracefully, hands behind her back. I reached behind me, grabbing Content.
"Why'd you attack me?" My eyes narrowed as I loaded a fresh mag. "Right, mute."
She didn't let me continue, rushing toward me. She has no weapons in her hand, but she's throwing narrow jabs. It's kind of like rapier, but she throws wide punches. I blocked and dodged the best I could, parrying as I pushed over one of the tables. She hit the table, toppling over the entire thing as she shook her head. She suddenly charged again, using the table as support. She flew in the air, foot aiming straight toward me. Just as she got close, I reached, hoping to grab her ankle. Her foot moved to the side, quickly wrapping around my arm. Her legs locked on my elbow, and she used her body to swing.
I felt my feet leave the floor, my back slamming into the floor as she straddled my waist. I tilted my head, her fist connecting with the mat. My knee collided with her butt, thrusting her forward. She rolled, her heel gliding toward me as I blinked. She was quick enough to notice me above her but not fast enough to move. My foot planted on her back, pinning her to the floor. The barrel of Content aimed at the back of her head. I noticed that her back formed a crack a bit, but it disappeared quickly. She looked back at me as he blew a raspberry.
I shook my head. "Did you want to spar? Is that why you attacked me?"
She nodded as I stepped off her. "Well, just ask then. You had me worried for a second."
She stood up, shrugging. Her eyes trailed after me, watching me place content away.
"So where's your weapon?" I looked back, seeing her brow raise. "Do you not have a weapon?"
She held out a finger, reaching back and pulling out her scroll. She typed for a few moments before showing me the text.
"'What makes you think I have a weapon?'" I read. "Cause of your fighting style. It's quick and fast, but your movements don't give off that you use a sword, like a rapier. Maybe similar, but I can't really tell."
She nodded, typing again. "'You got all that from me attacking?'"
I scratch the back of my head. "Kind of? It wasn't hard to notice. So, do you have one?"
She shook her head, shrugging. "Well, I suggest it. I feel like your style would boost you a lot. You're kind of limited to just your fists, the main reason why I ended the fight quickly."
She nodded, though I couldn't tell if she really cared. I turned back toward the locker, ejecting the mag. My eyes widened as I quickly looked back and blinked. Her eyes were wide, surprised as she quickly looked at my hand gripping her wrist. I looked down at her, my heart racing. She raised her hand; now that I look at it, I think she was just trying to get my attention. What the fuck was that? I was sure I was going to be attacked. I quickly let go of her wrist, letting off a breath. She stepped back, her eyes never leaving me.
"Ah, fuck." I held out my hand. "Sorry about that. I don't know why I did that."
She rubbed her wrist, waving me off. She suddenly began heading toward the doors. She gave a small wave as I stood there. I swipe my hair back, feeling more loose strands. I pull my scroll out, seeing the time. Just as I was about to close it, a message popped up. Oh, Ruby messaged me, asking if I'd be able to make it to the match. I check the time, numbing over the options. I send back a quick yup and begin to make my way over to the stadium.
The bullhead ride was quiet as hell; the sunset and the cold air started to get colder. Once the bullhead landed, I started to jog. I passed by several people, seeing as some had left the stadium.
"I can't believe she would do that!" I overheard as my pace slowed.
I glanced back, seeing the civilians with expressions on their faces. Shock, confused, maybe? I turned toward the stadium, seeing an ambulance take off. What the hell happened? I quickly rushed over, pushing past a crowd of people. Just as I broke through, an Atlas guard stopped me.
"Halt!" He placed a hand on my chest, pushing me back. "Civilians are to evacuate the area."
"I'm a part of Beacon's staff!" I flashed my Beacon ID.
"Sorry, kid." He shook his head. "I have my orders."
"Fuck it." I blinked past him, my leaves covering him as he swiped and coughed.
I continued to run, passing and blinking through the people. I made it a point where I could see. Guards, the robots, were guiding Yang in cuffs toward a bullhead. My scroll rang as I picked it up.
"August?" Ruby's voice came from the scroll.
"Roses, what the hell happened?" The bullhead doors closed, taking off. "I just got to the stadium. Why is Yang in handcuffs?"
"A," Some voices were heard. "A lot, August. Meet us at our dorm. We have a lot to talk about."
Just as I was about to answer, Ozpin sent a message requesting my presence immediately. I cursed as I turned away from the bullhead taking off.
"I wish I could. Ozpin just aksed to meet me." I could hear the sigh come from her. "Look, I'll try to get there as fast as possible once I'm done with Ozpin, okay?"
"Yeah, okay." Before I could hang up, she continued. "Don't take too long."
"I won't."
The call ended as I made my way back out of the stadium and back toward the bullhead. As I approached the docks, one of the screens caught my eye. It showed the match with Yang. The reporter was talking, but all I saw was Yang blast Mercury's kneecap as he walked toward her. The footage was cut, but that lingered in my head a bit.
'Why did she do that?'
I don't-
'I don't believe it.'
Yeah, you're right. Let's go meet Oz.
The elevator felt longer and more compact. The music wasn't helping as the doors dinged. It separated as I was met with Ozpin. He was sitting, his face holding that neutrality. I walked toward him, holding out the footage on my scroll.
"What happened?" I questioned, the scroll playing the incident.
"I know you have questions." He said nonchalantly.
"Yeah, I do." I placed the scroll on his desk, sliding it to him. "That entire thing looks suspicious as hell! Why did it happen?"
He calmly looked at me. "She said he aimed to attack her."
"It doesn't look like it, but why did she think that? It doesn't make sense."
"It doesn't." He agreed, which calmed me a bit. "We're investigating the footage, the arena, and the food served. August, this is being taken seriously."
I sigh. "Good. So why did you contact me here?"
He motioned toward the window, showing the academy. "I have a task for you."
He motioned for me to follow as we approached the window. I watched as students were arriving and entering their dorms.
"I need you to be on guard."
"Why?" I asked, facing him. "What's happening?"
"I don't know." A fucking white lie? "I have a feeling something is going to happen, and I need you ready. You are the student assistant. You are responsible for the student's mental and physical health."
"I'll do my best."
"I need you to do only your best." He turned to me, his brows furrowed.
I nodded as he faced the window again. Every thought is coming to mind, and I can't tell which is the most likely. I shook my head, noticing Ozpin sit back down.
"Go get rest. You will need it for tomorrow." I nodded, stepping away from the window.
I continued, glancing back at Ozpin as he began to work on his computer. I entered the elevator. Hopefully, when I get to Ruby's dorm, they're not asleep yet.
I closed the door, facing back to the team after Ironwood left. Everyone was sitting on their bed; an awkward silence hung in the air. This is no better than solitary confinement. I ran my hand across my face, stepping into the middle of the room.
"I didn't do it on purpose." Yang suddenly spoke through clenched teeth. "He attacked me."
My head nodded. "I know, and I believe you."
I do. None of this feels right, but everything happened too fast.
"Of course, we believe you," Ruby spoke.
Weiss nodded. "Yang, we know you would never do that."
Yang's eyes trailed past me and onto Blake, who averted her eyes. "Blake?"
She continued to look away, hugging herself. "I want to."
Weiss's head snapped to her teammate. "How could you say that? Yang would never do that!"
I turned toward Yang; tears shimmered in her eyes. "Blake?"
I stepped beside her, hand on her shoulder. "What do you mean you want to?"
Blake's expression shifted, shame and guilt written on her face. "I know what people are capable of. I've seen how people can change."
I patted Yang's shoulder as I slowly approached Blake. "I know what you mean, and you don't have to explain."
She shook her head. "I need to."
She looked past me, eyes locking with Yang. "When I was with the White Fang, I knew someone. Someone I trusted and believed in. First, it started as accidents, then self-defense. I started to believe him, believing that it was all true. I couldn't see that he was changing, and it was too late.'
She suddenly stood, stepping past me. She looked down at Yang, her eyes staring back at Yang. "If what you're saying is true, then prove it. Look me in the eyes and say he attacked you first, and you only acted."
I stepped beside them both. I trust them, so I hope I'm not wrong. Yang wiped her tears, facing Blake with renewed determination. She didn't break the gaze as she stood up.
"He attacked me first. I just defended myself."
Blake watched her for a moment, a smile breaking the concrete expression. She nodded, her hand raised only to stop.
She stepped back. "All right. I believe you."
Yang smiled, but her eyes didn't hide the hurt. I playfully punched her shoulder. "Don't worry; you'll be proven innocent in no time. When that happens, we're going to celebrate."
She laughed, slumping back in her bed. "I want fresh homemade pizza."
I smacked her thigh. "Woah, who do you think I am?"
I shook my head. I motioned toward them all as I pulled my scroll. "C'mon, let's give her some space."
Yang gave me an appreciative look as everyone began to leave. Ruby watched Yang for a moment before closing the door. A door opened as Jaune poked his head out with worry.
"How is she doing?"
Blake shrugged. "Better than before, just a lot on her mind."
Ren stepped beside Jaune, giving a faint bow. "If she or you ever need anything, don't be afraid to ask."
I nodded. "She'd appreciate that."
Ruby suddenly sparked. "Hey, Pyrrha? Be sure to win the next round, and I'll try to see if I can make it if you're chosen! I'm sure Yang would also appreciate that."
I peeked from the door, seeing Pyrrha look away before giving a smile. "I'll do my best."
'Somethings wrong.'
It looks like it. It could be because of everything that is happening.
"Sorry, but I think I've had enough fighting for one year," Blake spoke, rubbing her arm.
"Ditto." Weiss nodded, glancing back at the faunus. "Coffee?"
"Tea." Blake smiled as Ruby joined them.
Damn, I'm also craving something to drink. I waved at Team JNPR as I walked down the hallway. Walking through the halls of Beacon feels different than before. Students were gossiping, and I can't blame them. I stopped in front of a vending machine, picking out my favorite.
The can fell, and I continued to walk while drinking. What does Ozpin mean? What else is he hiding? I know he's cryptic, but this year is different.
'Maybe he doesn't want us to panic?'
We rarely do. This isn't related.
'Maybe something is gonna happen.'
But what? It doesn't make any sense, no matter how many times I try to make it happen. I looked at the cream soda in my hands.
"August?" A voice startled me.
I whipped around, seeing Pyrrha. "Pyrrha? I thought you were with your team?"
She avoided my eyes. "I…wanted to talk to you about something."
I glanced around, seeing fewer students walking. "Let's go somewhere less populated."
She nodded. "You read my mind."
We walked until we entered an empty class. Oobleck should be back until after the festival; he usually never gets back early. I placed my soda on his desk, leaning against it as I faced Pyrrha.
"I'm all ears. What do you want to talk about?"
She hesitated as if looking for the right words. She rechecked the door and locked it with her semblance. She paced before sighing.
"You know Ozpin more than anyone, right?" Woah, that's a start.
"I guess." I shrugged. "I mean, I think there are others who know him better. There's Glynda, for example, but, yeah, I know him."
She nodded, shifting her feet. "Do…Do you believe in destiny?"
I watch her, weighing the words in my head. "I want to."
She turned sharply toward me, surprise evident. "What do you mean?"
"Well, I-" I fumble my words. "I want to hope there's a reason for all of this. Everything. Destiny is never really good or bad. It's just a path and how, I guess, people view it."
She nodded; her expression was something I couldn't read. She turned away from me. "What would you do if your destiny was something dangerous where you might be hurt or worse?"
'...What?'
"I'm a huntsman, Pyrrha." I step toward her. "But I have choices. So do you. What's on your mind, Pyrrha?"
"A lot." She quickly shook her head. "Thank you, August. That's all I wanted to ask."
"Wait, Pyrrha!" She continued toward the door, shutting it closed.
'What was that about?'
I don't know.
'It involves Ozpin.'
Yeah, it does, but we have to head toward the arena. I have to make sure everyone is secure before anything else. I finished my drink as I made my way over to the arena.
Cinder sat patiently after changing the contenders. Neo approached from the side, umbrella gracefully swinging. She plopped on the chair beside Cinder, spinning as she held out a folder. Cinder took the folder, seeing August's picture on the front.
"The Queen knew of his existence, yet nothing else." She glanced at Neo, who shrugged. "Did your test prove Emerald's intelligence?"
She shook her head, feigning a gag. Cinder nodded, opening the folder. Only a few printed papers were inside, most already repeating the knowledge they had. Cinder continued to flip, seeing Neo pink highlighted text.
'Very perceptive.'
Cinder continued, reading his semblance again and again. The semblance can only be used when he is looking at something. The fight between Neo and August proved helpful. Along with information from Taurus, there's much to do—another target. The word Blush was in the file, marked red. This was the one Adam fought.
Cinder rolled her eyes at the remembrance of Adam proudly stating he had killed a traitor. A deep gash across his chest is what he said, yet the assistant was still seen moved and unbothered. The orange one, the most common, was the easiest to know about. Cinder placed the folder down, a look of contempt as she zoomed in on August in the crowd with one of the surveillance cameras.
Just then, the contenders approached one another. Cinder glanced toward Neo, who lazily reread the file.
"Let's be sure to put on a show."
Pyrrha was locked in, swiftly dodging each strike from Penny. I can tell from our sparing sessions how much she's improved. Even though her coordination is better, she's slower. Distracted even, right?
'You're getting better at observing.'
Thank you, I've been trying. Pyrrha was thrown to the ground and disarmed. She quickly reached, her semblance retrieving her weapon. Penny once again hit her weapon away. Her swords spread out behind her as Pyrrha stepped back.
I furrowed my brows, seeing Pyrrha's expression as Penny slightly levitated. Pyrrha stepped back; her expression changed to panic. Her eyes darted from one side of the arena to the other. I trailed after her eyes, seeing nothing. I stepped closer, seeing Penny launch the blades.
Pyrrha's semblance activated, her hands outstretched as the swords flew back with a yell. Penny ducked under a few but was suddenly suspended in the air again. I squinted, seeing wires tightly wrap around her limbs. Pyrrha's expression made my feet move on its own. I blinked to the arena floor, hearing the tearing as I slid to a stop.
Penny's wires cut clean through her, revealing the wires and components. She fell, the pieces of her body leaving bits of metal around as her swords suddenly fell. My eyes were wide, my stomach churning for the moment as my breath was caught in my throat. The floor began to revert to its original form. I forced my legs to move, as little as they did and turned toward Pyrrha. The sound of the wires was so loud that I couldn't hear the crowd. Pyrrha fell to her knees, eyes wide as tears began to well.
The speakers sparked to life. "This is not a tragedy. This was not an accident. This is what happens when you hand over your trust, your safety, and your children to men who claim to be our guardians but are, in reality, nothing more than men."
I shook my head, quickly making my way over Pyrrha. "Our academies headmasters wield more power than most armies, and one was audacious enough to control both. They cling to this power in the name of peace, yet what do we have here?"
I grip Pyrrha's shoulders, shaking her. "Hey! Don't listen to her! Look at me in the eyes, Pyrrha!"
She hesitantly locked eyes. The woman's voice continued as Pyrrha began to calm down. She slowly nodded as I glanced back at Penny. Her eyes were open, no light in them. She was a robot? She had a personality, confused most of the time, but even she didn't deserve this. I slowly raised Pyrrha off the ground, hearing the sudden alarm.
"Warning, Grimm attack imminent. Class Level Nine. Please seek shelter in an-"
Her eyes looked past me, staring at Penny. The arena shook, and an ear-piercing caw sounded above us. A Nevermore landed on the arena's barrier, pecking and attempting to break through. The ground shook again as I continued to shake Pyrrha. My words fell on deaf ears as she continued to stare.
"Pyrrha!" I heard Jaune yell. "August, get her away quickly!"
I looked up, seeing the Nevermore fly up and dive. I quickly hugged Pyrrha, blinking. We reappeared and were thrown through the air as the Grimm broke through and landed where we stood. The wind pushed us farther back, sliding across the ground. We slid to a stop, Jaune rushing toward us. I helped Pyrrha back on her feet, keeping my eyes on the Nevermore.
It squawked, jumping toward us. I called my weapon as it let off a pained screech. It stumbled back, shaking its wing. Someone landed before us, taking a stance with one of Penny's swords.
"Roses?" Ruby stood, back facing us, as she aimed the sword forward.
"Stay away from her!" I could hear how her voice sounded; she was angry.
It looked at her, shaking its head. It flapped its wings, flying straight toward us. I rose from the ground, weapon in hand. I aimed only for lockers to pierce and slam into the Nevermore. It struggled to fly, being hit again with another round. It slid to a stop in front of us. The lockers all opened, revealing the weapons. It didn't take long for everyone to get equipped.
The Nevermore began to rise again as I quickly shot out its wing. It fell back down, letting off pained screeches. Its head snapped at one of the students attempting to get back up. I moved Pyrrha away as the rest handled that. She was still in shock, only watching the aftermath as they beheaded the Nevermore. She slowly looked back toward Ruby.
"Ruby, I'm sorry." Her voice quivered.
Ruby turned toward us with the same expression before turning to determination. "Me too, but it's not your fault."
"She's right," Jaune said, holding Pyrrha's weapons. "The one on the speakers. They're the reason for all of this."
I nodded as I tilted my head to the sounds of wings. I looked up at the broken barrier, seeing Griffins landing. Dozens of them swirled outside as some began to flock in. Ruby held her hand toward me, and I realized what she meant. I hand my scroll, blinking into the air as I buried Greed into one of the wings on one. It slammed into the floor, attempting to shake me off. I raised the blade as I pierced its skull. I turned around, seeing one blasted away from me.
"Students!" I heard a familiar voice.
I turned, seeing Oobleck and Port. "Professors?"
"I think it's time you all leave," Port said with his blunderbuss.
"But-"
Oobleck interrupted. "No buts! I'm sure this moment will go down in Remnant's history, but I still hope my students will survive to tell the tale."
Ruby hesitated but nodded as everyone began to leave for the docks. I stopped, glancing back at the pair. Peter must have noticed as he turned toward me.
"Go, Mr. Fall." He grinned. "Beacon needs you, my boy. Don't let her fall without a fight."
I nodded, turning away. "Please survive, Professors!"
"As do you!" I heard before I turned the corner.
I quickly approached the docking pads, seeing them loading onto it. I quickly ran and blinked inside. The bullhead began to fly to the city and Beacon. I approached the front seat as I tapped one of the pilots.
"Fly me over Beacon Academy." He sharply turned toward me, fumbling with his words.
"It's overrun, kid! Why do you want to go-"
A flash blinded me for a moment. I blinked rapidly, seeing a ship slowly falling out of the sky. The engines were out and on fire–one of the Atlesian ships.
"Ruby! Where are you going?" I heard behind me.
I turned as I saw the door open with Ruby by it. I blinked toward her, but it was too late as she jumped. I watched as she used her semblance toward the arena again. Jaune quickly approached, watching as we got further away.
"August, what do we do now?" I turned toward him, shaking my head.
"I trust her. You all should go to the city and the courtyard. Assist in any way you can. I'll see if anyone is trapped in Beacon."
He nodded as we continued.
Grimm was wondering about Beacon's grounds. A Beowolf heard the sound of engines as it looked up. A foot slammed into the skull, cracking it. Its body went limp as it began to disintegrate. August looked up at the airship, waving. He turned toward the inside of Beacon, weapon equipped as he began to search.
August tore through the numerous Grimm inside, and seeing the carnage fueled him forward. Screams could be heard as August dashed forward. He rounded the corner, seeing an Ursa pinning a student to the ground as there was a wounded woman behind her. August blinked, slashing its paw off. It roared, stumbling back as August dug the axe blade into its neck.
The woman let off a few pants, watching as she recognized the assistant. "August!"
He turned toward her, stepping off the disappearing Grimm. The woman quickly turned toward the other as she tried to hold her side. The girl continued to apply pressure, panicking as her breathing became unsteady. August touched the injured girl as a glyph appeared under them. The woman looked up to August, seeing his yellow eyes. The wounded girl let off a whimper as she slowly opened her eyes.
"Ivy!" The girl quickly hugged her partner, tears spilling.
The girl's eyes looked around, a groan coming from her as she spoke. "Opal? What happened?"
Ivy shushed her. "It's okay! August's here; he helped you."
"You both should leave," August said as his eyes returned to orange. "It'll just get worse from here on out."
"But," Opal said, grabbing her drumsticks. "We can help! We're huntsmen in training!"
August nodded. "You are, which is why I want you to join the others in the city. Make sure the civilians get to safety, please."
Opal reluctantly nodded as she helped Ivy to her feet. The sound of growling could be heard getting closer. The girls looked behind August, seeing Grimm beginning to pour into the hall. August turned, reloading Content. He nodded toward the exit for the girls.
"Go, I'll look for others." Opal carried her partner toward the exit. Ivy looked back at August as he disappeared, leaving behind the leaves.
Few other students exited Beacon, thanks to August. August watched the last students leave as footsteps were heard. He turned, seeing the group who owned it. White Fang members, many holding bladed weapons. Some were stained red. August turned, gripping Content as the group stopped.
"A huntsman?" One growled. "A traitor, too. How long have you aided humans in our people's demise?"
August's eyes didn't leave the blood. "Did you kill students?"
"Oh, this?" He motioned toward his sword. "Yeah, those monsters had it coming."
August lowered his head, leaves taking his last location. The man's eyes widened behind the mask as August's foot broke it. One of the members wasn't fast enough. The butt of Content slammed into her chin as she slumped against the wall. August ducked under a slash, kicking out the feet of the member. Before the member could rise, August's foot kicked him against the wall, leaving the member coughing as he held his side. The last member raised his spear, a bullet piercing his arm as he yelled. The spear dropped as August cut off the screaming with a quick smack with the buttstock. The man who boasted was crawling back as he attempted to reach for his weapon that fell. His hand gripped the handle as leaves scattered above him.
August slammed his heel into his hand. He growled, slowly looking up at the huntsman. Before he could utter a word, the White Fang member went limp as August stomped on his head. He let off a sigh, and a slight quiver escaped him. He quickly shook his head, turning and running through the hallway.
'You should've killed them.'
I don't kill.
'I do. You should've let me do it.'
No. I shook my head as I passed destroyed classrooms and halls. I continued toward as I made it to the elevator of Beacon. Footsteps clicked behind me as I aimed. Jaune held up his hands as Pyrrha stood before him, shield raised. I halted, as did Pyrrha. We both relaxed as she smiled. Ozpin stepped in between them, eyes worried.
"August?" He took a step forward. "Are you okay? Are you hurt?"
I shook my head. "No, look what they did."
I motioned around as he placed a hand on my shoulder. "I know."
I looked down at him and couldn't help but avoid his eyes. He motioned toward the elevator.
"Quickly, into the elevator." The doors opened as we entered.
I reached over to press the office, but he beat me and pressed numerous buttons. The elevator moved, and the numbers went into the negatives. I turned toward Ozpin, who didn't look back.
"Oz-" He held up a hand.
"Not now." I reluctantly agreed and waited.
The doors opened, revealing an unfamiliar hall. I looked around, but Ozpin quickly ran. I followed as I continued to look around. This has been down here the entire time? How long has this been here?
"What is this place?" Jaune voiced my thoughts.
"A vault." Was all he answered.
"A vault? A vault for what?" I slowly stopped as I came face to face with someone in a pod.
"Amber?" I said, slowly turning toward Ozpin.
She had burns and wounds on her. The last time I saw her, she smiled and promised to visit. What happened to her? Who did this to her?
Ozpin spun around, motioning toward the second pod. "Pyrrha! Into the pod, now!"
I couldn't take my eyes away from Amber. The reasons she never sent back a letter in the last year. All those times, Ozpin told me she must be busy.
"You knew?" My voice cracked, not that I cared.
All he did was shake his head. "I'm sorry, son. Please stand guard with Mr. Arc."
I shook my head, getting into the stance.
"What do we do?" Pyrrha asked.
"We," Ozpin sighed. "Do nothing. You, Ms. Nikos, have a choice to make."
I glanced back as Pyrrha faced us. She looked between us—a tear formed as she wiped it away and entered the pod. The pod closed while Ozpin continued to type into the console. He turned toward her.
"Are you ready?" She nodded, but Ozpin continued. "I…need to hear you say it."
She paused for a moment before looking forward. "I'm ready."
"Thank you, Ms. Nikos." As he flipped the switch.
For a moment, nothing happened as Pyrrha began screaming. I sharply turned, blinking beside her. Jaune joined me as she continued to cry. I looked toward Amber, blinking beside her, seeing her eyes grow heavier. I quickly looked back at Ozpin, who had his eyes downcasted.
"I'm sorry."
"Sorry?" I let out. "What's happening with Amber? Ozpin-"
An arrow pierced the glass and through her chest. Amber's eyes widened as she locked eyes with me. My head snapped toward the direction, seeing Cinder with a bow in her hand. I looked back, seeing Amber try to mouth something, but her eyes slowly closed. The lights turned off as the power seemed to die down.
Amber lay limp as my reflection shone on the glass. Seeing the tiny dust and ash on my face, my eyes added some lumination. I stumbled back, gripping Content. A flash flew across my face as I looked up, seeing Amber's aura suddenly fly toward Cinder. It engulfed her as Jaune rushed forward.
"Wait, Jaune!" I called as she let off a blast of energy.
He flew back as Pyrrha broke away from the pod. He slid in front of me as I helped him up. Ozpin blocked Pyrrha from rushing as he faced Cinder.
"Take Jaune and get out of here! Find Glynda, Ironwood, Qrow! Bring them here right away!" He stopped forward. "The tower must not fall! August, go to my office and send messages to the other academies!"
"But I can-"
"No, you'll only get in the way!" He faced me. "Go! Now!"
My heart tugged as I grit my teeth. I slung Content over my shoulder and placed my hands on Jaune and Pyrrh's shoulders as I blinked. We blinked to the elevator as we entered. The elevator rose and stopped on the ground floor. Pyrrha stepped out with Jaune, looking back at me.
"Be careful, August." I couldn't say anything; I just nodded.
I tapped my thigh, waiting for the elevator as the building shook. The lights flickered again before stopping. I cursed, gripping the doors to try and pry them open. It did; the elevator shook the moment it opened. I could see the office through the small opening. I blinked through just as the elevator doors closed again. I landed, looking back at his desk. I flashed in front of his computer and began typing.
Fuck, Ironwood knows. Lionheart? I typed, adding their contacts to the message. The ground shook again as a shadow cast over me. I slowly looked back, seeing the biggest Grimm I've ever seen fly by. The giant wings shook the building itself as it let off a roar. The city was in ruins, ships leaving back to back. I jerked away from my trance, pressing send. It was loading as the ground shook again.
"C'mon, you piece of shit!"
It failed to send; no signal could be found. I slammed my fist as I continued. The ground shook again, but the elevator doors blew open. I ducked just in time for the door to break through the window. I looked back, feeling the wind hit against me. I looked back, seeing Cinder slowly land with that damn smirk.
"I see you found out about the signal." She took a few steps toward me. "It's hopeless."
Ozpin? She's here, right in fucking front of me. Ozpin couldn't-shouldn't-
My nails slightly dug into the desk. "You…"
Ozpin, why?
"Oh, I see it." She spoke again. "That hope dying. Ozpin failed you just as you failed him."
'She's stronger than us, we have to leave!'
I don't care.
'You'll get us all killed!'
I blinked in front of her as her eyes snapped down to me. I was bent down, twisting my body with Cotent in my hands. She raised her arm, only for me to disappear. She slowly turned back just as my buttstock slammed against her cheek. She stumbled forward, a glare evident on her face. I got into my stance.
Pyrrha and Jaune continued out of Beacon, killing stragglers of Grimm. Pyrrha continued as rubble fell nearby. Jaune stopped, looking up. He barely saw August break through the wall of Ozpin's office. He disappeared, a blast of fire breaking another part. Pyrrha's eyes widened as they both shared a look.
Weiss panted, using her weapon as support. The wyvern flew by, casting a gash of wind. Many students followed the sight, seeing it land on the tower. Many could see the lights and flashes coming from it. Weiss noticed the Atlesian fleet ship begin to descend rapidly. She heard the roars as she entered back into her stance.
Cinder sidestepped a slash as she stabbed at August, who disappeared. She raised her hand, shards formed to block the bullets as August continued to attack relentlessly. She raised a palm, casting separate blades as August used his semblance around the room. Just as he reappeared, a shard broke against his side. He slid across the floor, pushing himself off quickly to block a strike from Cinder.
August pushed back as hard as he could. Cinder smirked, slyly creating more shards. August ducked under one but failed to predict the next. He stumbled back before being kicked against Ozpin's burned desk. August raised his weapon again; his back broke through the desk as he lay there flat. His aura flickered but stayed strong. He coughed, looking up at Cinder and the enormous Grimm that had landed. Cinder formed a sword above August as his eyes changed. Cinder tilted her, lazily dodging Pyrrha's shield.
"Pyrrha?" August groaned. "What are you doing here?"
"I came to help." She entered her stance.
Cinder launched the sword toward August as he blinked away. It stabbed into the ground, pushing the autumn leaves away. Cinder turned toward the duo, several swords forming behind her. August stood glancing at Pyrrha.
"What about Jaune?" She shook her head.
"Safe."
"You should've left."
"It's my choice, right?"
August glanced at her as his eyes changed to red. "Right."
His weapon changed just as he did. The two charged, weapons raised as August swung his blade, using the chains as shields. Pyrrha blocked a few strikes, using her semblance to grip August's chains and propel him to Cinder. She sidestepped, tilting her head as Greed barely missed her. She looked down, seeing a chain wrapped around her leg. August tugged, slamming Cinder into one of the walls. She pushed herself off, using her maiden powers to float and launch several projectiles.
August weaved and blocked, using some of the chains to assist Pyrrha. Pyrrha threw Akoúo̱ at Cinder, who smacked it aside. Cinder raised her hand, flames brewing in her palm. A force impacted her back as she looked back. August stood behind her, eyes orange as it shifted back to red. Cinder felt a shot graze her. She faced back to Pyrrha, who had summoned her shield back. With the power of the maiden, she flew straight toward Pyrrha. August reappeared in front, only for Cinder to smile. She stopped, sidestepping one of his chains. She grabbed it, throwing him in a direction.
Cinder created a sword, blocking a strike from Pyrrha. The strike shattered the sword, forcing Cinder back. As Pyrrha pushed the offensive, August blinked nearby, opening fire toward Cinder. Cinder stepped behind Pyrrha, but no shot came. She frowned, catching the strike from Pyrrha's shield. Before she could react, a swift kick forced the champion against the floor. Engulfing the shield in flames, Cinder threw it toward August. August blinked away, but the shield bashed the side of August's head. He rolled and slammed to a stop against the wall. He coughed, gripping the floor.
Pyrrha ran toward Cinder, jabbing as the two blocked and slashed one another. August stood to his feet, shaking his head before continuing. Pyrrha rolled past him as August threw one of the axe blades. As expected, she tilted her head only for August to yank the chain. The blade grazed her cheek as she hissed. Her eyes glowed, and flames erupted from them. She summoned a bow, firing multiple arrows. August's eyes changed as he blinked rapidly. Pyrrha raised her blade, blocking a few as Cinder focused on her.
Ruby had just finished the call with Jaune as Weiss turned toward the tower. Both shared a look before quickly rushing toward the tower with flames and explosions erupting. Pyrrha was slammed into the floor, her aura flickering. She looked up, seeing August sidestep and block the fire with the chains. The same chains began brightening orange as the flames continued to heat them.
Cinder struck and slashed, which continued to be blocked. Yet her expression didn't change. More blades and shards were created as they were launched all at once. August's eyes adjusted to orange again. He blinked away, where part of the tower broke away. When he landed, fire burst against his chest, forcing his back against the ruined wall.
I coughed and heaved as my aura flickered and shattered. I crumbled to my knees, feeling fatigue wash over me. I shook my head as I looked up.
Switch-
I raised my arm just as an arrow pierced through its forearm. I cut my scream, biting down on my tongue. The force of the arrow pushed me onto my back. I gripped my arm, feeling the arrow burn into my arm. I forced the scream back, feeling tears begin to brew. I locked onto the arrow, seeing as it burned more. I gripped the arrow only to pull back as it burned my hand.
"August!" I turned toward Pyrrha, who charged Cinder in my defense.
My breath grew ragged as I tried again. My hand retracted again, feeling the same burning sensation. Sweat trailed down my face, my eyes following Pyrrha as she fought. She used parts of the tower, the gears, to attack Cinder. She trapped Cinder, encasing as she continued to add more gears. I could see the faint glow; I could feel the heat more. Suddenly, it exploded, throwing bits and pieces of metal everywhere.
Switch!
'I can't!'
What?
'I can't switch because of the arrow!'
My eyes widened, and I felt my heart sink. I can't pull it out; it's too hot! The pain only grew more intense as Pyrrha was slammed into the ground. Her aura shattered. She rolled and wheezed. Cinder smirked slowly, creating a bow along with an arrow. Pyrrha grabbed her shield that was nearby and threw it. Cinder fired the arrow as it disassembled around it. It reformed, puncturing into Pyrrha's heel. She let off a scream as she fell onto her knees.
I clawed the ground, seeing the gun part of Greed. Cinder slowly landed as I continued. My hand gripped the handle. I forced myself to my knees, shakily aiming. My vision continued to blur before I fired. The bullet blew out part of the remaining walls. Cinder glanced at the wall before her eyes landed on me again. Her lips drew back into a snarl as she rushed me. I fired off another shot, her head moving to the side.
"August!" Pyrrha cried as I felt Cinder's heel slam into my chest.
My back broke through the rest of the wall from Ozpin's office. I felt weightless as I slowly watched the tower get farther from me. Seeing Pyrrha with her hand outstretched as she disappeared.
Weiss watched as Ruby used her glyphs to run against the tower. Her energy is lacking, but she still has enough. Ruby continued to run as the tower shook. Weiss's eyes widened, recognizing August falling from it along with rubble. Ruby stopped, hand covering her mouth.
"Ruby, go!" Weiss called after her. "I'll get him, get to Pyrrha!"
Ruby reluctantly nodded, running up the tower. Weiss quickly ran in the direction August fell. Grimm continued to come, rushing toward her as she dispatched them quickly. She turned the corner, seeing more of the destroyed school. She shook her head from the thoughts, continuing. She stopped, seeing a familiar weapon with a chain.
She knelt down beside it, seeing the chain had broken. The broken part was still glowing orange as heat rose from it. Her eyes scanned the area. A glimpse of fabric caught her attention. Suddenly, a bright flash engulfed the sky. Weiss covered her eyes, and slowly moved her hands, seeing the wyvern turned to stone. The entire thing was wrapped around the tower, encased. Weiss snapped her attention back to searching.
She found the fabric again, seeing the poncho that August wore. Weiss's eyes were frantically searching as footsteps quickly approached. She turned, seeing Jaune as she sighed in relief. Jaune jogged over, looking at the cloth in Weiss's hand.
"August?" He stopped, his eyes glistening. "Is he…?"
"I can't find him." Weiss continued to look. "He's around here, help me look!"
Jaune nodded, wiping the tears away. The two continued to look through the ruble. Jaune lifted pieces of debris as Wiess used her semblance. After larger pieces, Jaune heard a sound. He hushed Weiss as the two listened. A cough was heard, alerting the two in the direction. They rushed over, seeing August lying against some of the debris. Some bits were still on him, and blood was seen running down his head and nose. Jaune pulled the slab off with a grunt. He stumbled, kneeling beside August.
"August!" Weiss rushed to his other side. "August, can you hear me?"
He mumbled something as she leaned close. "Take it out…"
She shared a look with Jaune before looking back at August. "Take what out?"
Grimm could be heard in the distance, causing Jaune to lift August. "That can wait, man. We have to go before the Grimm gets here."
Jaune hoisted August up, wrapping his arm around his shoulder. Weiss attempted to lift his other arm only to gasp. Before Jaune could question, his arm slung forward. The arrow, now cooled, was inside August's blackened arm. Slight bits of glowing cracks could be seen on it.
"Take it out," He absently said. "I can't even feel it."
Weiss looked at Jaune as she slowly touched the arrow. She gripped the tip and pulled the arrow. There wasn't any resistance as it came out. The arm slowly crumbled to dust, leaving a burnt stub. Weiss stepped back as August looked at his missing limp.
A flash of red aura overcame him. August coughed and wheezed as Jaune supported him. His eyes changed colors as he shook his head. He pushed off of Jaune, stumbling. Weiss quickly helped as Jaune pulled his weapons out. Weiss began to guide them toward the airships. A Beowolf suddenly jumped out, teeth barred. August quickly pushed Weiss, raising his only arm as the Beowolf tackled him. Jaune raised his sword as another targeted him.
Weiss quickly dealt with the third one that appeared, a quick stab to the eye. She whipped around to help August, only to see him beside the now-dissolving beast. He panted, his red aura flickering but remaining. Weiss could make out something dissolving from his mouth.
He huffed, shaking his arm as he stumbled, motioning toward the direction. "Let's go."
Weiss and Jaune's eyes met. They continued with only minor interferences. Ren noticed Jaune as Jaune ran toward them. Ren hugged Jaune along with Nora. Blake sat up, her eyes widening as the rest took notice. Professor Oobleck noticed as well, nudging Port as they both looked. The saved two girls also turned, seeing August limp toward the shuttle. Weiss held his side, his eyes struggling to stay open.
"My boy!" Port rushed over.
August's eyes returned to orange, slowly closing. Port caught August before he fell as he gingerly lied him down. August faced the sky, seeing the dark sky encased in smoke. Weiss knelt beside him, holding the remaining hand. One of the Atlas medics quickly approached as she scanned his body. She nodded, motioning toward the ships.
"He's stable; his body has been damaged too much." Weiss quickly alerted the others about Ruby.
Glynda had arrived to secure the zone, witnessing August's state. She hovered over him, a hand covering her mouth. August's eyes trailed over the professors and Weiss, his hand squeezing.
August fought back tears, his lip slightly quivered. "I'm sorry."
"No, my boy!" Port hushed. "You did everything you could. Rest. You deserve it."
His body shook while the professors began to prepare for evacuation.
It took a while for me to heal. Losing an arm like that screwed up a lot of things for me. I fixed my sleeve, seeing how it looked empty, as I looked into the mirror. My hair got longer, which means I'll need a trim. A slight knock alerted me, and I glanced back, seeing my previously damaged, repaired clothes. The door opened, revealing Glynda with a small smile.
"Are you ready?" I sighed, grabbing the locket off the dresser.
"Yeah, I'm ready." I turned and followed her.
We walked in silence down the halls of Beacon. No students, since the school is in repair. I winced, glancing down at my stub. Glynda tilted her head, an apologetic look.
"How does it feel?"
I smiled, raising the stub. "Just the phantom. Though I had worse, remember that stomach ache?"
She shook her head, facing forward. "I do. You wouldn't stop complaining after we told you you shouldn't have eaten so much frosting."
I shrugged as we stopped in front of the double doors. She placed a hand on the handle, hesitating. She turned toward me, smiling just as I nodded. With that, she opened the doors. Cheers from the professors erupted. I saw the professors, Ruby, and the rest of the JNPR team. My heart ached to remember. A shaky breath escaped me as I began to walk forward.
I passed Oobleck and Port, who patted my back and congratulated me. Peach smiled widely, wrapping an arm around me as she snapped a quick photo. I continued as Glynda stepped in front of me. She smiled, giving me a small hug. Ozpin's face appeared in my memory. She rubbed my head, feeling me hug tighter. She pulled away, turning toward Port, who had a case with items on it.
She turned toward me with the items. "I know this isn't what you wanted as a graduation, but we'd rather not have you wait."
She held out a card. "August, please hold out your scroll."
I did as she asked. The card was placed against the screen as a beep was heard. She pulled away, revealing the updated information—my photo and a proper license.
"You have shown bravery, courage, and strength. Congratulations, August, on becoming a full-fledged Huntsman."
Once again, cheers erupted behind me. Ruby sped toward me, hugging my waist as I stared at the screen. Jaune joined in, smiling as he patted my shoulder.
"Congratulations, August," Ren spoke.
"Here," Port spoke. "These are gifts from the general for your efforts. He congratulates you on your recovery and your future."
The case was extended to me, engraved with the Atlas symbol. It wasn't alone as besides it, it had Beacon's symbol. I opened the case, my finger flipping off the lock, and opened it to reveal Content and Greed. The chain was repaired, but the metal was different. It wasn't Atlesian, something I didn't recognize.
My hand paused, glancing up at Peter. "Wait, gifts?"
He smiled, removing the rifle from the case. A prosthetic arm, dawning my colors and symbol. Black with red, yellow, and orange cracks in the joints. I laughed at the fact that it looked partially burnt with embers. I know it's not what they meant, but the ironies are funny. I noticed the rose symbol on the back of its hand.
I raised a brow at Ruby, which she quickly defended. "I colored it and kinda went a bit overboard."
"So you made it look burnt." Her smile quickly fell as she stumbled over her words. "I'm kidding! It looks great."
Ruby frowned, placing a hand on my shoulder. "I wish Yang came, but she said to savor the moment."
I nodded. "I will."
I slowly reached forward, feeling the cold from the metal. I gently lifted it as I placed it inside my empty sleeve. I shivered, feeling the metal touch the stub. Suddenly, it was attached and locked in place. It twisted itself, the arm opening and adjusting. Once done, all the parts closed, making me wince as it tightened.
"Are you okay?" Nora stepped beside me.
"Y-Yeah, just cold." I waved her off, pausing.
The arm reacted smoothly. I rolled my hand in place, opening and closing my hand. I could hear the hum as it moved, but it felt like I had my arm back. I moved it faster, testing its capabilities.
'I have an idea.'
Go ahead.
My aura changed for a moment, red flashing over. The arm was encased as well, meaning that it was not foreign. We switched quickly as everyone watched. It looks similar to my arm, so that's a plus.
"I see you have become accustomed to it," Oobleck observed. "Well done, my boy."
I nodded as Glynda stepped close. "Congratulations again. We have much to do, but you're free to go. Please visit or send messages when you can."
I nodded, hugging with both arms now. We separated as everyone began to depart. I left the grounds, followed by the others. I stopped, waving my arm from side to side.
"So, what's the plan for you?" Jaune said, hope in his eyes.
"Well, remember how you guys visited and told me your plans?" He nodded, smile stretching. "There's your answer. Let's go to Haven."
Ruby pumped her fist as Ren smiled. Nora lifted me above her head, carrying me as she chanted. I laughed, pleading to be put down. We walked toward the remaining airship, teasing and talking about how far it was going to be.
A/N: I know! Long chapter, but hey, can you blame me? After this, it will only get longer, especially with how everything is set up.
I like to keep notes short. August lost an arm and failed to stop Cinder! How will this affect the journey, though? Only I know, and you'll have to wait and read. Feedback is welcome, and I hope you all enjoyed it!
