WRONG TIME, WRONG PLACE

My first Laramie Story.

Will be uploading in chapters as I get them done. Hopefully, fairly quickly, but no promises.

All mistakes are mine. Promise.

CHAPTER 1

Slim leant against the window, staring blankly out at the brown, scorched earth. A slow release of air escaped his lips. This was not happening. This could NOT be happening. He cursed under his breath and looked back at the figure lying on the bed. Grey now, skin glistening from the fever engulfing his body.. Only the slight rise and fall of his chest assured Slim his friend was still there. Still alive against all the odds. He was fighting, and that was all the blond rancher could hope for.

Turning, Slim walked back to the weathered rocking chair that had become home, almost, for the last 2 days.

And the vigil continued.

oooooooooooooooo

5 days earlier.

"So, how long you figger it's gonna take Jess?"

Jess tightened the cinch on his horse. "Coupla days. I'll wire y' when I'm headin' home."

"You sure you're right to go alone, I can….."

Jess chuckled. "anything to get outta a bit a work. Nah, I can handle it Slim. 'Sides, you promised Daisy y'd finish fixin' the boards on the porch."

Slim raised his hat and ran his hand through glossy, blond hair. "oh yeah, forgot about that."

"No you didn't" Jess laughed. "But good try, hard rock."

Tying the last knot of the saddle bags, Jess proceeded to the side of his horse, and effortlessly hopped up and onto the saddle. Adjusting his position, he turned to see Daisy coming through the front door.

"Oh Jess, here are some biscuits and ham for you. And I've also put a piece of pie in there. Now, don't you go dropping that, it won't take too kindly to the landing."

"Thanks, Daisy. I'm not aiming t'do any damage t' that piece a pie til it's in here." Jess smiled, while patting his stomach.

Tipping his hat, he turned his horse and headed off, waving as he left.

He didn't know why, but Slim felt an uneasiness watching his friend ride off. Just something he couldn't quite put his finger on…. just…. something. He was roused from his thoughts by Mike handing him a hammer.

"Aunt Daisy said you'll be needing this. Said I can watch but not to get in your way." Mike smiled.

Slim ruffled the boys hair. " Okay Tiger, lets set about fixing these timbers."
