After the fight with the Octo Siren, Shantae raced out of the Siren's lair and back to her friends. But thankfully, she wasn't alone. Because not only did she defeat the Octo Siren, she also rescued her friend Triton as well. And thanks to Shantae, Triton's cycle of intolerance for society was broken and joined the friends who matter to him the most.
The two reach the exit of the Siren's lair and find Sky, Bolo, and Rottytops waiting for them. The trio of friends were relieved to find Shantae and Triton safe and sound.
"Sky! Bolo! Rottytops!" Shantae cried. She rushes over to hug them out of relief. "I'm so glad you all made it out safely."
"Me too," said Triton with a smile. He looks to see Rottytops and holds his nose after taking a small whiff at the zombie. "I take it you're Rottytops?"
Shantae lets go of her friends and Rottytops said, "Yep, bet you guys missed me huh?"
"I don't even know you," replied Triton. "Except you have a rotten sense of smell."
"Hey!" pouted Rottytops. "I can't help it," she takes a whiff at the hybrid and asks, "What's your excuse? Why do you smell fishy?"
Triton remained silent at Rottytops' question, then said, "I can't help it. I love swimming with the fishes. That's my excuse." Rottytops just blushed in embarrassment when he came up with his excuse, and she couldn't.
Sky and Bolo chuckled. "I think I'm really starting to like Triton," said Bolo. "Me too," said Sky. Then out of nowhere, Wrench flew by and started pecking on Triton's head. Triton kept waving off the bird until it rested on Sky's glove.
"I only wish he didn't smell like fish," she said. "That's what's making Wrench act crazy."
"That explains his behavior," said Triton. "Birds like Wrench tend to go after fish from time to time."
"We should get back to the metal fish, and fast," said Sky. "It's only a matter of time before the sirens realize that their main control systems are back online."
"I agree," said Triton. "Sky, Bolo, lead the way." Sky and Bolo take the lead out of the cave and into a tunnel leading them to the sub. Rottytops looked at Shantae with a guilty face.
"Hey, Shantae," she said. "I just want to say, I'm really sorry about stowing away. I should've known you'd invite me."
"Wait," said Triton, "You stowed away to get on this island? How did you do that without getting caught?"
"I told you, I'm a zombie fish breath," said Rottytops. "I can take my limbs apart and hide in small packages. Duh!"
"How was I supposed to know that?" Triton asked. "I haven't seen a zombie before."
"Wait, what do you mean by that?" Rottytops asked.
"Forget it," said Shantae. "Rotty, you can apologize later. Right now, we have to get out of here."
Then, out of nowhere, the alarms started going off. Red lights began flashing, the ground began to quake, causing the three to tremble with confusion. The shaking of the ground caused Shantae to lose her footing, only to be caught by Triton again.
"What's going on?" Rottytops asked. "Why is the ground rumbling?"
Then, before they knew it, the shaking caused rocks to block the exit where Bolo and Sky left. Triton tried to move the rocks, but they wouldn't budge. His left hand slipped and caused a cut on his palm. He hisses in pain, but regains his emotional stability.
"We're sealed in!" Shantae cried.
"Are you guys okay?" Sky cried from the other side.
"We're fine," said Triton. "The rocks won't move!"
"Is there any other way out?" Bolo asked.
"I think there is," said Sky. "Can you guys get out the same way you came in?"
"I think so," said Shantae. "You guys take the metal fish and get out of here!"
"Triton, keep our friends safe," said Sky. "I'm counting on you!"
"I will," said Triton. "You can count on me!"
"I think I see the exit," said Rottytops. "It's this way, follow me!" She races through the other passage, and Shantae and Triton follow after her.
"How do you know where the exit is?" Triton asked. "You haven't seen these tunnels before!"
"I can feel it in my guts, just keep going!" said Rottytops.
The three climb up out of the shaft from where they came in and come across the ghost dog on the other side. Triton smiled and thanked the dog for its help. And so did Shantae.
"By the looks of things, I'd say your mission was a success," she said.
"What about you?" Shantae asked.
"Don't worry about me," said the ghost. "I'm a ghost. Worry about yourselves."
"She's right," said Triton. "I doubt that any of us can phase through rocks." He jumps high in the air and starts climbing.
"The Empress has let loose her siren men," said the ghost. "Be aware of your surroundings!"
As Triton continued to climb behind Rottytops, he started to hear a strange noise. He and Shantae kept running until they came across a large, heavily armored guard patrolling the caves. It was one of the siren guards that the ghost dog was talking about.
Shantae and Triton nodded and prepared to fight the siren guard. The two charged ahead, and were able to knock it down on its back. Triton swung Shantae in the air and she used her tortoise fusion to body slam on the guard. Knocking him unconscious, the two high fived on a job well done.
"When it's just the two of us, there's no stopping us wherever we go," said Triton.
Rottytops smiled, "You two look so cute together."
Triton and Shantae blush in embarrassment, making Rottytops laugh. "You certainly know how to make things awkward," said Triton. He looks down at the zombie's leg and yanks it off her body. "Now kick it into high gear, and let's get going!"
Shantae laughed at his leg pun, while Rottytops just pouted with shame. Triton gives her back her leg and she continues to lead them out of the tunnels. As they venture through the tunnels, they come across more soldiers of the siren army. Triton and Shantae worked twice as hard as they ever had before, and ventured through with ease.
Time was of the essence and they're still searching for a way out. Soon, Rottytops lead them to an open passageway. One where she was unfamiliar with, but it was the only path that wasn't sealed off. As they ran into the tunnel, Triton was able to pick up another strong smell. It wasn't as strong as Rottytops' smell considering they were close together. But it had a familiar scent of gunpowder.
Inside the passageway, the trio entered into what looked like a control room. With a large monitor three times the size as what Triton and Mimic have seen. There were buttons and levers all around the room, but one figure stood out amongst all the devices: A fiendish purple pirate.
"Risky Boots!" Shantae cried. "So, releasing those creatures was part of your plan all along, wasn't it!
Risky Boots laughed, "Ho ho ho!" She drew her sword and pointed it at the three. "That wasn't my plan," she said. "This was!"
Risky pushes a button on the control panel. Then out of nowhere, hidden pistons began pumping, causing the island to quake and tremble all over the island. The inhabitants grew so scared of the outcome. From Arena Town, to Tree Village, and Armor Town. The birds on the island started flying away from the danger that was yet to be revealed.
Before anyone knew it, the island spouted four metallic pillars. Which turned into what looked like wind turbines, but inside were glowing blue rings that sparked electricity. Shantae, Triton, and Rottytops were shocked.
"What have you done!?" Triton exclaimed.
"HO HO HO!" Risky Boots laughed in triumph. "These energy collector towers will collect the sun's rays and convert them to fuel for the ship's engines! The power that once belonged to the Eight Sirens, will now belong to me! Risky Boots! Queen of the Seven Seas! HO HO HO HO HO!"
"You think all that power is going to make you queen?" Triton asked. "You're just a pirate, and always will be. Once you make a deal with someone, you betray them the first chance you get!"
Risky was agitated about being called just a pirate. "You sir, are quite the thorn in my side!" She turns to Shantae with a sly grin on her face. "But that stops now!" She swings her sword and Triton and Rottytops dodge backwards.
Then, Risky takes out her flintlock pistol and fires at Shantae. The pistol shot a bolo of rope, tying the half-genie up. Then, she reels her in like a fish on a hook. "Let me go!" Shantae cried.
"Sorry runt," said Risky. "But you're vital to her master plan. MEN!" Risky calls to her Tinkerbats and orders them to attack Triton and Rottytops. They easily surround the two, just as Risky takes her leave.
"Triton! Help!" cried Shantae. Triton watches in horror as his first real friend gets taken away. His anger builds up and launches through the army of tinkerbats.
"OUT OF MY WAY!" he shouted. He darted through the army while Risky was slowly climbing out of the room. He called upon his coral gauntlets to knock out the remaining tinkerbats and reach the escaping pirate captain.
"Shantae!" Triton called. He jumps as high as he can and grabs onto Risky's boot. Shantae tried to escape, but the ropes were too tight to break free. Risky just watched with glee as Triton tried to climb up to stop them.
"Pathetic, like you always were," said Risky. "Risking your life for a pathetic half-genie runt. Just try to stop me. And her!" She kicks Triton with her free boot and he falls back to the ground. He could only watch as Risky escapes with the captured Shantae.
Triton could only hit the ground with his bare fists and tears coming out of his eyes. He was so close to saving his friend, only to fail miserably. Rottytops did her best to fight off the rest of the tinkerbats. But she was too late. She spotted Triton on the ground feeling helpless.
"Shantae's tough," said Rottytops. "We'll get her back."
Triton took a deep breath and regained his composure. Fighting the sirens was easy. But now he has to fight a pirate, which is more difficult considering they are sneaky and clever. "The only way we can save her is if we stop the ship from powering up," he said.
"Maybe we can stop the ship if we shut down the energy collecting towers," said Rottytops. "Let's get back to the surface and regroup with the others." Triton nods in agreement and follows Rottytops back topside.
The two make it back to the surface, all the way to Arena Town where everyone was gathered. Including Mimic, Sky, Bolo, the half genies, and the mayor. They were standing next to a monitor in the middle of town where everyone could see it.
Triton's worst fears of public appearances were about to come true. But Triton didn't care. His best friend was in trouble and he had to do something. So he put his fear behind him and went up to the crowd.
"Mayor! Everyone!" Triton called. "We have a problem!"
Everyone was caught by his attention. "And who are you?" asked the Mayor.
"My name is Triton," he replied. "I am a resident on this island. And this island is in danger!"
"Did you see it?" Sky asked. "Those towers just rose right out of the ground."
"And this is the monitor I was telling you about," said Mimic.
"Wait," said Bolo. "Triton, Rottytops, where's Shantae?"
"Shantae was just kidnapped," replied Rottytops.
Shantae's friends and Uncle were shocked. "WHAT!?"
"That's right," said Triton. "By an old accomplice of yours, named Risky Boots."
"Risky Boots is behind all of this!?" Bolo asked. "Why am I not surprised?"
"I don't think Risky is the one behind all of this," said Triton. "She told Shantae that she was vital to her master plan. I think Risky made a deal with someone else who hates us just as she does."
"Who could that be?" Mimic asked.
"There's only one answer," said Triton. "The Empress Siren."
The entire town gasped in horror. "What does that mean?" "How is that possible?" "An Empress Siren?"
"That doesn't matter now," said Triton. "What matters is that Risky played us all. She tricked me into restoring power to control the systems. And she's using the towers to power up the engines."
"Engines?" Plink asked.
"Why would a sunken city need engines?" Vera asked.
"Because the sunken city…" said Triton. "Is a ship hidden underground!"
"A SHIP!?" Zapple cried out.
"And Risky is attempting to power it up and sail away with it," said Triton. "Once that happens, the whole island will collapse."
"Unthinkable," said the mayor. "How would a ship come to be stuck beneath the island?"
"It was a long time ago," said Triton. "Long before we were even born."
"That shouldn't matter," said Sky. "Shantae's in trouble and we need to get her back!"
"But once the ship tears itself from the island..." said Harmony.
"My home will be destroyed!" cried Vera.
Rottytops looked at the monitor and watched the schematics of the towers. "According to this panel, it won't be long until the ship reaches full power."
"In a time of crisis," said the mayor. "Only the half-genies working as a team can save the day."
"That may not be possible," said Triton.
"Triton's right," said Harmony. "As it stands, Shantae carries all of our magical abilities."
"But Shantae is captured," said the mayor. "That means…all is lost." The rest of the townsfolk began to feel distraught. Seeing the town feel just as miserable as he was made Triton stand out to the crowd.
"So in a time of crisis, you're just going to give up?" Triton asked them. "Shantae would never give up, so let's not give up on her!"
"Triton's right," said Bolo. "Shantae has saved us all before, now she's influencing others to do the same!"
"But," said Sky. "How are we going to shut down the tower generators?"
As the group began to think, the lobster siren appeared out of thin air in the crowd. Triton was pleased to see her, but the crowd gasped.
"Hey there," said Triton. "We meet again."
"Who is that?" Bolo asked.
"What is she wearing?" Rottytops asked. "And where can I get one?"
Sky knew right away, not who she was, but what she was. "A SIREN!" she cried.
The crowd gasped in horror, seeing a siren for the first time above ground. "That's a siren?" "That must be the monster." "A siren in front of us!?" "That's the creature that's been terrifying my village?" "She must be stopped!" Their fearful comments turned to hatred for all the damages the sirens caused. And they started to approach her with blind might.
The lobster siren whimpered in fear, knowing what they might do. But Triton, having a sudden burst of courage, got in front of her. "No!" he cried. "She's not like the others. She's a friendly siren!"
The lobster siren mumbled very quietly, leaving the entire town confused. "I think she's trying to speak," said Sky.
Triton approached her with caution and the lobster siren whispered into his ear. Triton nodded, and turned to the crowd. "She said she wants to help us stop the ship."
"No!" cried Rottytops. "Peel and eat her!"
The lobster siren squeaked in fear. Triton shielded her from the zombie girl. "You will not eat her!" he ordered. He turns back to the siren. "It's okay, now tell me how to stop it."
While the siren whispers to Triton, Sky gets agitated, "Unless she knows how to shut down those energy towers, any help from her is too little too late."
"She knows how to shut down the towers," said Triton. Bolo grins with delight in front of an annoyed Sky.
"She said that the towers are powered up by fusion cores that only the sirens created long ago. They were enchanted with a spell so that no human could ever try to remove them from their power couplings. So the only way to destroy the towers is for a siren itself to destroy them."
"So how is this siren going to destroy the fusion cores?" Bolo asked. "She looks like she's never been in a fight."
"She's not going to destroy the cores," said Triton. The crowd looks to Triton with another answer. Triton knew that this was now or never. The moment of truth, to face his biggest fear head on. "I am!"
"But how are you going to do that?" Rottytops asked. "You're not a siren."
Triton looks around, looking for a way to show the people what he was talking about. He finds a bucket of water not far from where he was standing. He takes it and places it over his head.
"Triton," said Mimic. "What are you doing?"
"The stupidest, yet bravest thing I could think of," replied Triton. He took a deep breath, then poured the water over his head. The sudden contact of water caused his fish skin to reveal itself to the crowd. The crowd gasped at the reveal, including Shantae's friends and Uncle. Plink and Harmony however, weren't that surprised.
"You're a siren too?!" Mimic asked.
"Yes, and no," said Triton. "I'm half a siren. My mother was a siren, my father was a human. But I'm okay with that now."
The crowd was stunned with his sudden appearance. Some couldn't even speak a word. Triton had a feeling there were those who would reject him because of the facts. But then, Harmony came up to his side.
"If Triton is the only one who can help save this island," she said. "Then I trust him to do the right thing!"
"Me too," said Plink, approaching Harmony.
"I trust Plink," said Vera. "So I trust him too."
"And me as well," said Zapple.
"Count me in," said Bolo.
"As would I," said Mimic.
"Shantae trusts him," said Sky. "So I will too."
"He is full of surprises," said Rottytops.
While most of the crowd were concerned, Triton didn't care. All that mattered to him were the people he grew close with the last few hours of his life. Then remembered what Shantae said to him. 'You don't need the world to love you. You just need your world, which includes the people you care about the most.'
"Let's get started," said Harmony. "Triton, your mission is clear; shut down all four towers while there's still time. Then we go rescue Shantae."
Triton smiled, "Leave it to me," he said. "I'll do my very best." He makes his way to the first tower, running as fast as he can. "Hang in there Shantae, I'll save you. Just like you saved me."
Triton raced across the island, looking for the fusion cores on all of the towers. Some of the siren guards stood by and guarded them, but Triton was able to fend them off. He jumped, slashed, punched and kicked, knocking them all down and leaving the fusion cores exposed.
Triton rips off the doors to the fusion cores, not wasting a second to stop Risky Boots. However, Triton overlooked the fact that the fusion cores came with a defense mechanism. So by trying to rip the fusion cores from the towers, Triton received a bolt of electricity flowing through his arms.
However, Triton tries again. And this time, he counteracts the electricity with a new special ability of flowing electricity through his own hands. With the electricity fighting against each other, Triton pulls out the fusion cores from the towers. Shutting them down in the process.
Back in Arena Town, Triton returns delivering the good news. "All the fusion cores are removed from the towers!"
"That's great!" said Sky. "Now we can save Shantae!"
"I knew you could do it!" said Bolo.
"That should stop the flow from powering the city," said Mimic.
The crowd began to cheer in triumph, but then the ground started to shake.
"If that's true, then how do you explain this?" asked Rottytops. She points to the monitor, to see that the power generators were still gathering energy.
"What!?" Triton cried. "How's that possible?!"
"We're already too late," said Rottytops. "The ship is about to-"
Suddenly, the ground started to shake violently until a giant ship popped out of the ground. For all people to think a ship would pop out of the ground failed to realize that a siren's ship is in fact, an actual airship. Everyone got scared and either ran for their lives or watched in horror as their homes began toppling down from the ship's hull.
Triton and the others looked up to see something dangling from the bottom. It was Risky Boots standing on an anchor with Shantae tied and gagged beside her. "HO HO HO HO!" she laughed. "The power of the Sirens belongs to me!" Then the anchor gets hoisted to the ship, disappearing from sight.
The monitor starts beeping, showing the group the airship's anatomy. Mostly to the front of the ship, that looks like it has cannons. "She's charging up the weapons systems," said Rottytops. "She's going to blow up the entire island!" Everyone gasped in horror, including Triton.
"My word, it's true," said Mimic. "The city really was a ship!"
"And not just any ship," said Sky. "An airship!"
"With Risky Boots controlling the ship," said Bolo.
"Her cannons are aimed right at the island!" said Rottytops. "What do we do?"
Everyone, including Triton, started to question if they could stop an airship from destroying them. Seeing that there's no way of getting into the airship, people were either running for their lives, or facing an inevitable end.
Triton just looked up in fear and confusion. He never faced anything like an airship before. And seeing his friend in danger, with little to no chance of getting up there, made him sit on his bottom and curl up feeling scared.
"Shantae, I'm sorry," he murmured. "I'm so sorry."
Shantae's friends saw the half-siren fall into despair, and that made them desperate too.
"What are we going to do?" asked Plink.
"How are we going to get up there?" asked Zapple.
All of the inhabitants from the island began to start feeling down. All they could do was watch the airship fire up their cannons. When all hope seemed lost, the group started to hear whistling. It was coming from the lobster siren. Triton easily recognized the melody and sang with it.
"Hope for wonder, hope's in sight/ Hope for happiness with all your might.
End the fire, end the dire,/ Sing with strength, our perfect light."
While Triton was singing his melody of hope to himself, the lobster siren continued whistling along with him. Before long, the rest of Arena Town followed along with the two, by either singing, whistling, or humming.
"How did you know that song?" Triton asked the siren.
The siren whispered in his ear, "It was your mother's song."
Triton looks up to the airship and stands up with triumph. "I have to get up there," he said.
"How can you?" Plink asked. "There's no other way!"
Before Triton could answer, the lobster siren conjured up a transportation device and hovered it above the crowd.
"Woah, what's that?" Triton asked.
"It looks like some kind of transportation device," replied Mimic.
The lobster siren nodded and pointed to the ship above them. Triton looked at the device and smiled. He said, "I think I understand now. This siren has the ability to teleport anywhere and anything she wants. And so, the sirens used her to transport the half genies underground and hold them prisoner until we rescued them. Correct?" The lobster siren nodded.
"You got all that from just a few whispers?" Sky asked.
"I'm half a siren," replied Triton.
"Touche," said Sky.
"Hurry," said Rottytops. "It's time for you to go confront Risky Boots, and save Shantae!"
"You must do whatever you can to destroy that airship before it can fire!" said Mimic.
Triton looks at the teleportation machine, then looks around at his friend's friends. Then the people of the Arena Town looked to the hybrid with hopeful smiles. And that made Triton happy, knowing that people depend on him to help save their town.
"I'm ready," he said. "And don't worry Mimic. I'll bring your niece back before you know it. I promise."
"I know you will Triton," said Mimic. "You may have the strength of the siren. But your heart has more humanity than you realize."
Triton smiles and jumps onto the transportation device. With a spin and a whirl, the transporter activates and sends the hybrid up to the airship. As he teleported to the other side, he looked at his surroundings, and found himself in the sky. Inside the airship itself. "Okay Risky," he said. "Let's risk it all!"
