Chapter 3
When I re-entered camp I asked runners to get me the legion legates and the vice governors for a meeting about what was discussed between me and lord stark. While I sat there and waited the legates entered one by one starting with the legate of the 3rd legion Marcus Corvinus who stood a tall 6ft 3inchs and had a sticky build to go with the height, as a career soldier he had all the scars and stories to go with them. The second to enter is the legate of the 7th legion Alexander Lorenzo who was average size at 5ft 9inchs and had the look of a politically appointed officer and who was always looking around for hidden dangers expecting assassins to jump out at him even in my own command tent. The third to enter was the leader of the skilled labour that came with the civilians who was to set up a trade commerce building at the new colony Tiberius Corvinus, as the name suggest he is a distant cousin of the legate of the 3rd legion which is why he was willing to join us on this expedition. The next to enter was the legate of the 8th legion Pedro Pollux who was not a native roman but someone who became a citizen from one of the roman settlements set up for ex legionnaires and at the height of 6ft 5inch's and built like a tank he is every image of a soldier who has seen heavy fighting and would lead from the front and has the aura of a beast in chains until given reason to be released.
The second to last to enter was the vice governor Commodus Sexus who i have known for 10 years, he has a height of 6ft 1inchs and has the blonde hair and blue eyes of the usual roman aristocracy but from the memories that I inherited is a down to earth person with little to no drive to enter politics which is why he came with me to help start this colony. Lastly the legate of the 14th legion and a person new to the post of legate Milo Cainus and is a little short for a warrior but what he lacks in height he makes up for in agility from the times I have seen him sparing with the troops on the trip here even with the limited space on the ships he is just as deadly if not more so than the other legates.
As we all sat down and had the servants pour us some drinks I explained what was discussed with lord stark. "So all there offers make sense and give us somewhere to base out of till we known whats going on and where we are as with all the signs I dont think we are anywhere near home anymore and I dont think we will make contact with home in our generation if ever as there is just to much difference in where we are and where we came from to not have heard about each other or at least come across each other before even in rumours. As for the lordship I have decided to accept but on the condition that the land is big enough for myself to be the main lord and for each of you to take up a minor lordship so that we can spread out a bit and make several settlements in the area he is giving us as I dont want us all in one place given the climate and given the lack of information we have of the land we need to be cautious. The only positive that I can see is that where we have landed is full of honourable warrior types so I think we will get along fine and with a little trade of our skills we can at least make a home here. Any questions or disagreements?"
Alexander legate of the 7th legion looks at the rest who have decided they didn't disagree and decided to ask what others didn't "Why should we be willing to fight and die for these people if they decide that they want to call on us to fight?"
I look at alexander and state for all present "We wont be fighting and dying for them we will be fighting for out future and that of our children and if it requires me and even you to lay down your lives to better see our people protected and have a future in this land then I will gladly pay that price to see them to a better future, how about you as I see it your political future is now gone and we will be taking up hereditary titles which will pass to our children when we pass on and I don't think there is much chance of us changing the way these people run things in the short term. But even then there is politics in every hierarchy and you as our skilled politician will be vital to our success and that is why I want us to all have lordships even if its a title and no land for now as we need the leverage and to be seen as equals to others to make our place here. But you dont have to worry I wont allow them to use as fodder to be used as expendable foot soldiers to fight there battles for them. Does that address your worries?"
"Yes sir it does and I understand that we will all be needed to-do our duty to our people who now represent all that is left of the roman people as far as we know it and we will need to blend in with the world around us to a point where we are not seen as an enemy that needs to be executed. As for the release of the slaves we may need time to plan that out so that any slaves that think its ok to leave can be disposed of as we cant afford for the information of our selves and our abilities to be leaked before we are ready for it to be leaked." Replied Alexander with nods from all present.
