A/N:

...My puppy finally passed away last night. Didn't even realize it until I woke up this morning...and she was just lying there...

...Well...that's a right spirit breaker T_T

Why do I keep losing everyone and everything I love...?

Suppose you could say this was a tribute of sorts...a little scene from "Gimme That Fire" that didn't quite make it off the cutting room floor.

As ever, I own no references, quotes, memes or themes. Not a wit or a one.

I'm just a humble author trying to make his way in the world.

Gonna try and update "All Things Must Die" next. I don't know.

"Didn't know you were a dog person."

"Eh, frankly I prefer foxes, but dogs are nice too ya know...

Good Dog

The newcomer was...odd.

Zwei didn't know what to make of this strange-smelling human and his stranger tricks; he who brought with him the strange scent of sunshine, fire, and some other strange smell he couldn't quite identify. It was not quite a bad smell per se, but a strange smell nevertheless. This human smiled easily, yet those odd blue eyes always seemed to shimmer with a hidden sorrow few noticed. He hid himself well, and moved with great speed when they fought, yet that sorrow was always there, just under the surface.

He reminded Zwei of a fox.

Still his human seemed fond of this human, which in turn made him a friend, even if he only had one arm. Should he ever hurt Yang, he would be an unfriend; meat which Zwei would gladly rip and tear to pieces. She had welcomed him to their home some time ago, which in turn had led to many a belly rub and a great deal of treats from the blond human. He was rather nice in that regard.

In time, Zwei began to understand.

This was Yang's mate. She had chosen him. As well she should! He was a fine giver of treats!

But there would be no treats today.

They'd fought over something tonight, argued in a way they never had before. He'd heard the name "Raven" mentioned more than once. Harsh words ere exchanged. Raven. Just thinking of that one drew a growl from the pup. Unfriend. Bad person. Bite on sight. Not to be trusted anywhere near Yang or Ruby. And yet Yang still wished to see her. That was why they were still fighting.

...is a bad idea!"

"I'm telling you, I saw her on that train! If you won't help me look for her, I'll do it myself!"

Naruto flung up his arms. "Fine!"

Yang spun away. "Fine!"

"FINE!"

The door slammed behind her.

Zwei was many things, but even he could tell when someone was hurting. He watched the strange human throw himself onto the couch. Saw him bury his head in his hand. Heard him sigh. No. No, no, no. This would not do. Yang's mate mustn't be sad. Unacceptable. And so he nosed the human's hand, then yipped once to gain his attention.

A tired blue eye creaked open. "You again? Whaddya want?"

Zwei plopped down beside him and looked up. When the blond didn't budge, he barked. No response. Another bark.

"She's gonna get herself killed." he shook his head. "She nearly died on the train, and now she wants to go pickin' more fights...does she have a death wish?"

Zwei cocked his head.

"Don't give me that look!" the blond looked away. "I know what I said. You're right. I should help her. I owe her that much."

Naruto sighed softly and pulled the pooch close with his lone arm. "Thanks pooch. You're such a good listener."

Of course he was. Zwei was a very good dog after all.

A/N: There.

Gonna try and update "All Things Must Die" next. I don't know.

Aaaand there we go. As ever, reviews keep me alive. Without them, I cannot write. So...in the Immortal Words of Atlas...
