GOW
Megumin was staring, though how could she not? Kazuma was gone because of these girls. So, while Aqua curled up in her seat crying, Megumin stared at Kana and Sumi, even their names were odd. What kind of parent names their children such bland things?
The crimson demon's greatest mage was not a fan.
"Fuck's your deal shorty?" Kana asked.
Figuring that she'd been caught anyway, Megumin decided to speak.
"First, I would appreciate you not to refer to me as 'shorty.' I will let you know I am the foremost mage of the Crimson Demon clan and have no problem using explosion on you if you continue to show such disrespect. Secondly, I wish to know your history with my party leader."
Everyone tensed at that. Megumin could even see Darkness turn towards the front window of the carriage to listen better, and no doubt Chris was listening close even as she guided the horses.
"None of your damn business," Kana spat.
"No, no, I wish to accrue this knowledge myself, although, with the details littered throughout your reunion with noble Mr. Satou, I do believe we can infer that you two were formally dear to one another before you shattered his heart with betrayal. Although the specifics elude myself, I too wish to know more about how a hoodlum such as yourself acquired a place within Kazuma's life in order to commit such an atrocity," Sumi said.
"First of all, stop using words too big to fit in your cunt. Second off I don't owe you shit bitch." Kana snapped.
"We are going to be on the road for a while longer, and your history with Kazuma will be important in bringing him home," Darkness said.
"I want to know how you know our party leader, and the history you two shared," Megumin said calmly. Of course, her eyes were glowing with the passion of a crimson demon, she would know the answer.
After a few minutes filled with only the sound of horses trotting along and foliage being crushed beneath the carriage while everyone sans Chris stared at the delinquent, she finally folded.
"Fine, but it's not a fun story. Kazuma and I grew up together, my ma and his ma were old friends, and we lived pretty close so we'd hang out together all the time. We were inseparable in those days. One of us was always at the other's pad and doing something together. Back then, Kazuma was getting into his geek shit that wasn't very popular in our area, but he loved them.
Little Kazuma kept reading these stories and playing those games that had some cool hero rising above the odds and saving the day. He idolized some of those heroes and wanted to be just like them. Though I was more of the outdoors type we still couldn't be separated, we kept hanging out and doin' stuff together. One day, we were playing outside, but he had to leave and visit family, and like the little girl I was, I wanted to stay with him, and when I told him that, I told him that. Well, I told him I'd Marry him one day."
Megumin could barely breathe at that line. Kazuma was betrothed? But he always acted like a bachelor and a perv, was he being unfaithful? No, Kazuma was many things, but he'd never be unloyal, right? The crimson demon shook her head noticing that Kana paused her story, herself like everyone else around, lost in thought.
"But that wasn't all that happened," Chris eventually whispered. In the silence, she may as well have screamed it.
"No. No, it wasn't. We started dating that Night, I treated it like a forgone conclusion we grew up together and cared about each other the fuck else would happen? But we grew older. We were still in the same school, but our classes were different, and we didn't spend as much time together. I started becoming a bit of a troublemaker, and he used those smarts to kick some ass academically. But we still made time for one date a month, never anything big, just a walk in the park, a little meal that one of us cooked with our parents watching us, that sort of thing. We were still kids and still just wanted to hang out, puberty wouldn't hit us till later, and when it did, we were too busy or supervised to do anything.
Neither of us was happy about it, but we promised that we'd do something special for it, our last date was a trip to a cafe that we'd been going to ever since we started dating. We'd been using that spot for dates more since it was easier, but when we sat down together, It didn't feel the same. We'd sat down and talked, but it felt more like old friends catching up and not like lovers on a date, I was confused by it.
It's not like I stopped loving him, every time we went out before, I still felt the same love for him I'd known since we were kids. Hell, every time I thought about him I always thought 'yea Kazuma, I love him' but then… after that, I met a boy a little older than us. He had a killer ride and was fun to talk with, so I let him talk me up a little. It felt good hearing what he said. He looked good, too, Kazuma was never quite the looker back then but this guy sure as shit was. So when he asked if I wanted to head back to his place, I said yes."
Kana stopped talking, tears crawling down her cheeks. Most of the eyes in the carriage were wide in shock, the girl Kazuma promised to Marry, the girl he was courting. Did she cheat on him?
Sumi was glaring at Kana, and her hand was twitching wanting to reach into her bag, maybe to grab the ax she kept in there. Megumin only saw it when they were breaking into the manor, though, so no telling if she still had it on her.
"Continue," Chris instructed. Her voice left no room for question or request; it was a command and one Kana fulfilled.
"I found out he saw me leave with the other guy, he stopped showing up to school. I didn't care to know at the time, the guy I was with was so much fun, so I just kind of let Kazuma drift away. I didn't find out until much later how bad that hurt him. He went back to his games and his books and got made fun of for it by the other kids in the school. Pretty soon, he stopped showing up since those damn things always made him happy, and because of me, he needed something to feel happy about.
I didn't even stick around with that ass. I just, I always thought Kazuma and I would still get together at the end of it. oh yea, I was fucking around and starting shit, but we never officially ended it. I just thought he was off studying or something and that before we left high school we'd reunite and feel all happy to see the other again, reuniting and let the feelings we've had since childhood reignite and live happily ever after or some shit like that."
Kana was crying, but that didn't stop Megumin from tightening the grip on her staff and smacking the girl in the head with it.
"You evil woman, you! Kazuma may be a detestable human most of the time, but he never deserved such dishonesty or evil committed towards him!" Megumin cried. before Kana could respond, another blow struck her, this time from Sumi.
"I knew you were detestable the moment you approached me, but to do such an act towards my knight and still claim yourself wanting his favor? Despicable." The girl said in cold fury.
"Yea, I know I fucked up. That's why I'm here. It took me a while to figure out Kazuma was gone, but as soon as I found out he was gone, I spent every waking moment finding out what had happened to him. That's how I found out why he wasn't at school. That's why I kicked the shit out of everyone else who wronged him, so he'd be avenged by the person who wronged him the most!
Your name was last on that list, Sumi, but then when we found out he was here, I made a vow that no matter what, I would do anything it took to make it up to him. That's why I'm here and why I won't stop until I've righted every wrong he suffered because I wanted to be selfish."
Kana was crying by the end of her speech, and Megumin was conflicted. this woman did something horrible to her Party leader, but she was trying to rectify her misdeeds, so what should be done?
"You said Sumi was on the list. Why?" Darkness asked, leave it to the crusader to take notice of other details that may be related.
"She blames me for his death. Upon my first meeting with Kazuma, I did not know his name nor his existence. I was lost in thought while making my commute to school, evidently, I noticed not that my life was in peril. Consequently, Kazuma did. He pushed me clear of the danger that approached me and was run over in my stead. From the encounter, the only injury which befell me was from my ankle he, on the other hand, was dead upon the road as the reward for his valor.
The preparations for the funeral were extensive, and upon completion, I was invited. I also spent a great many of those months with The Satou's discussing the man their son was. They were rather surprised to learn of his death and grieved heavily for his loss.
Upon the day of the funeral, Kana disturbed the events and assaulted me. After the unpleasantness of our scuffle, we learned that Kazuma was brought back to life-fighting to save this kingdom, and neither of us hesitated to follow. I wish only to repay the debt I owe such a brave knight for losing his life to save mine, this hoodlum contrary appears only to selfishly reinsert herself into his life."
Before the girls could argue again, Megumin decided to ask the million Eris question.
"But why is he upset with Aqua then?"
"Based on my limited understanding of the events that transpired due to my knight's speech, she deceived Kazuma about the events leading up to his demise and convinced him that said death was pointless to convince him to traverse to Belzerg and combat the Demon King."
Every eye in the carriage turned to the crying blue-haired archpriest.
"Okay! I lied to him, I told him that you weren't in any danger and that he just imagined the danger. He believed me, and I bullied him into coming here. He ended up taking me with him, though, and he became my best bud. I kept lying to him!" Aqua cried.
Megumin couldn't comprehend what she was hearing. The only reason Kazuma was with them was because Aqua lied? She lied to him and got him to come to Axel with her for some reason?
"That stupid NEET wasn't even supposed to take me! He was supposed to bring something that would help kill the Devil King, but he ended up taking me with him instead, and I kept making his life hard, but he helped me out so much, and he became my best friend, and I kept lying to him about how he died." She bawled. Her blubbering was beginning to become incoherent, but… this was bad.
Megumin couldn't imagine what Kazuma felt to find out his backstory was so different from what he thought. Would he have even come to Belzerg if he knew the truth? it was hard to know, especially with how often he tried to rest and take the easy way out.
The only sounds in the carriage were Aqua's babbling while everyone else silently thought.
"We'll have to figure this out with Kazuma soon," Chris said. "We're here."
