For A Candy Cane A Day on the Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft and Wizardry Forum.
Blanche isn't sure how Bonnie and Clyde do it—sing and dance and fuck as if bodies aren't dropping like flies wherever they go. Blanche, on the other hand, can barely breathe. Bonnie frolics around the apartment in new dresses, seemingly totally unaware that the noose around their necks is tightening. But Blanche knows. They've gotten lucky so far, but the police are hot on their trail.
Blanche wants out, and she wants out now.
"Daddy, we shouldn't be here." She wraps her arms around her husband. She keeps her voice low. And although she knows he'll say no, she has to try. And so, she says, "We can turn them in. The police might let us go if we turn them in."
Buck stiffens. "We're not turning them in, Blanche. He's my brother, for fuck's sake."
"Your brother's gonna get us killed," she snaps. "We can't run forever, Buck. When we get caught, we'll all be sent to jail. I'll be sent to jail. Is that you want?"
"We won't get caught."
Blanche huffs. "You and Clyde always get caught."
"It's different this time," Buck insists. He pauses for a moment and then says, "Clyde won't go back to jail, baby. Not again. Not after last time. He'd rather die."
"He'd rather—?!" Blanche is incredulous. "Is that supposed to make me feel better? Clyde won't get us sent to jail, but he'll get us killed?"
"Blanche."
When she starts to cry, she forgets that she's trying to be quiet. She forgets that Bonnie and Clyde are just a door away. They hear her wails and burst into the room. She must've worried them, because Clyde's still doing up his trousers and Bonnie's buttoning her blouse.
"What's happened?" Bonnie looks between the couple, eyes curious and narrowed. "What'd you do to make her cry, Buck?"
"Nothin'." Blanche steps in before Buck has the chance to speak. She hooks her arm through his and, although the tears are still streaming down her cheeks, she gives Bonnie and Clyde a confident smile. "I'm just being silly. You know what I'm like."
Bonnie rolls her eyes and returns to her bedroom.
"Right..." Clyde's eyes flick between his brother and his sister-in-law. "Well, just keep it down. We are in hiding, remember?"
Blanche nods numbly. How could she possibly forget?
