Chapter Summary: The reunion between Uryu and Bambietta doesn't get off to a good start.
A/N: Hi everyone! I'm back with another chapter! My goal is to try and update this story every month. If I'm lucky, I'll update it sooner, but right now I want to try and do monthly updates. Key word being try lol.
I don't own anything Bleach related.
Uryu and Bambietta could only stare at each other in shock. Neither of them said anything. Neither knew what to say. They just couldn't believe that out of all the people to run into, they ran into each other. What a twist of fate.
A clap of thunder happened a moment later, snapping them both out of their daze. Uryu shook his head and then frowned, "Bambi, what are you doing out here in the rain like this?!"
"…I uh…" She started.
"What were you thinking running out into the street like that?!" Uryu interrupted frantically. "Are you okay?! Are you hurt?!"
"I'm fine! I just-!"
"Let me help you up," Uryu interrupted again.
"What? No, I'm fine. Really," Bambietta said, shaking her head.
"Bambi please…let me help you," Uryu said, his frustration at the situation building up.
"Uryu, I'm fine!" Bambietta pleaded.
"Bambi please!" Uryu exclaimed, grabbing her shoulders.
"Stop it!" She snapped, pushing his hands off her, "I said I'm fine and I don't need help! Why can't you listen?! I don't need a knight in shining armor trying to help me! Just leave me alone!"
"You're fine? You are the one running out here in the rain at night! You are the one that ran out into the road like a crazy person! And you are the one sitting here looking like an absolute wreck! How is that fine?!" Uryu snapped back, standing up. He's reached his limit with his frustration, and he was not going to let her talk to him like that. He then turns to go back in his car, "All I was trying to do was help you. But if you really don't need it, fine. Figure things out yourself."
Bambietta flinched at his response, watching him leave. She didn't know why though. All he was trying to do was help and hoe does she respond? She lashed out at him. And he lashed out at her back; Rightfully so. She didn't mean to lash out at him. It's just…the fight she just had with her friends really upset her and she was barely controlling her emotions as is. Running into her childhood friend didn't necessarily help and him hounding her with questions made her even more frazzled. Him grabbing her shoulders…she just lost it…and now she pushed him away.
She let out a shaky sigh and stood up. Once she was steady, she turned and began walking away from Uryu's car. Fresh tears began sliding down her face and sobs escaped her mouth. She didn't even try to hold them in. She didn't have the energy to. At this point…she was just done.
Meanwhile, Uryu let out a huff as he got back in his car, slamming the door behind him. He never turned his car off before getting out so all he had to do was drive off. He was about to put his seatbelt back on when he looked ahead and saw Bambietta walking down the road. She was walking…not running like she was before. And it looked like her shoulders were shaking. That sight alone unlocked a memory within Uryu's brain. One of a little girl walking away from him with shaking shoulders in his family home years ago. The frustration Uryu was feeling left his body instantly and was replaced by feelings of sorrow and regret. He sighed and looked down at his lap.
"I'm such an idiot," He thought to himself, rubbing his eyes underneath his glasses. He then turned off the engine of his car and got out of his car once more. Placing the hood of his jacket over his head, he closed the door and ran to catch up to his old friend.
"Bambi!" He cried, "Bambi, wait up! Bambi!"
Bambietta didn't stop. She just kept walking. But she didn't pick up her pace, which allowed Uryu to catch up to her quickly.
"Bambi wait! I'm sorry!" Uryu said, slowing his pace as he caught up to her, "Bambi please!"
He then reached out and gently grabbed her arm to stop her. As soon as he grabbed her arm, Bambietta turned to him and grabbed the front of his jacket. She then buried her face in his chest and just cried. Uryu looked down at her shocked. This was a complete 180 from her previous reaction to him grabbing her, and he didn't know if it was a good or bad thing.
"Bambi…"
Bambietta didn't say anything. She just continued crying. The look of shock on Uryu's face turned into one of sadness as anther memory unlocked within his brain. This time it was one of that same girl sitting next to him on his bed crying her eyes out; Her tiny hands covering her eyes as she cried. He hated seeing her cry when they were kids, and he hates seeing her cry now after all these years. Good to know that aspect hasn't changed.
"Bambi," Uryu said softly, placing his hands on her back.
No response.
"Bambi," Uryu said again, "Please let me help you."
Again, no response. He was about to ask again when Bambietta, still against his chest, slightly shook her head yes. Uryu let out a sigh of relief. He then grabbed Bambietta by her shoulders and gently pushed her away. Bambietta allowed him to, bringing her fingers up to her closed eyes under her glasses to wipe away her oncoming tears. Uryu placed the hood of her jacket over her head before putting an arm around her shoulders. He then began leading her back over to his car.
"Come on…let's get you out of this rain."
Uryu unlocked his front door and pushed it open, "Go on in."
He held the door as Bambietta slowly walked past him and inside his home. He swiftly followed her inside, closing and locking the door behind him. He sighed and flipped his hood down, placing his bag of takeout on top of the cabinet he had in his entry hall. The rain had stopped by the time they got back to his place, but they were still wet from being out in it; Bambietta more so than Uryu. And he needed to get her out of those wet clothes immediately.
He turned his attention to her and saw her slowly move to take her jacket off, slowly unzipping it and flipping down her hood, "Here, let me help you."
Bambietta paused and looked towards Uryu as he walked over to her. He began pull her jacket off her and she allowed him to, moving her arms to help him. Once her jacket was off, Uryu moved to place it on his coat rack while Bambietta took her belt bag off from around her torso and placed it on Uryu's cabinet. She decided to put it on before her coat to keep it from getting wet from the rain, and her efforts seemed to have worked as it was only slightly damp. She then started taking off her shoes.
"Oh, you can go ahead and place your shoes in that plastic tube. That's usually where I put my wet shoes," Uryu said as he took off his shoes and placed them in said tube.
Bambietta watched him for a moment before slowly walking over to place her shoes in the tube next to his. She then stood up straight and looked up at him. It took Uryu a minute to realize that she was waiting to see what he would like her to do next.
"Oh! Um…Wait right here! I'll be right back!" Uryu said. He then ran down his entry hall, opened the door, and hooked a right.
Bambietta watched him leave until he was out of her line of vision. She then crossed her arms and looked around his entry hall, rubbing her upper arms for some warmth. He didn't decorate it up too much, but it also wasn't basic. Still, it felt…homey. She wondered if the rest of his place had a similar feel to it. A moment later, Uryu came rushing back in holding some clothes and a plastic bag in his hands.
"Here you go," he said, holding out the items to as he stopped in front of her.
Bambietta looked down at the clothes before looking back up at him. Uryu gulped nervously, kicking himself for not elaborating, "Uh, well I don't know how long you were out in the rain, but I don't want to take any chances of you getting sick or anything. So, you should get out of those clothes and shower."
Bambietta only stared at him in response.
"These are an extra pair of pajamas and under garments a friend of mine left here. You two seem to be the same size so this seemed to be the best option for you," Uryu said. "My friends and I always keep extra clothes at each other's houses in case of emergency and well…this is an emergency. But don't worry! I know she'd be fine with you wearing them!"
Bambietta continued staring at him, not saying a word. Uryu gulped nervously again and was about to keep going when Bambietta looked down at the items her was carrying and gently took them from him.
Uryu let out a sigh of relief, "Just go down this hall and make a right and the powder room is right there. I placed some extra towels in there for you, as well."
Bambietta nods in response before taking off her glasses and holding them out to him. Uryu, immediately understanding what she wanted, took them from her. She then walked past him and down the hall, turning right just as Uryu instructed.
Uryu watched her leave, not moving from his spot in the hall. He even stayed put when she left his line of vision. It was only when he heard his power room door close and the shower running a moment later that he decided to move. He sighed once more, leaning against the cabinet with his free hand. He placed Bambietta's glasses down and removed his own, placing them next to Bambietta's. Standing up straight, he rubbed his eyes. He would like nothing more than to just turn in for the night, but he knew he couldn't. Not before making sure his friend was okay.
Putting his glasses back on, he walked down the hall and made a left to go to his room. He needed to straighten up his entry hall, but before he could even begin doing that…he was going to change into something more comfortable.
Bambietta sighed as she turned off the shower. After drying herself and her hair, she wrapped herself and her hair up in towels before stepping out of the bathtub. She then walked out of the bathroom and into the powder room where she left the pair of pajamas Uryu gave her. She put the pajamas on, placed the used towels into the dirty towel bin, and walked over to the vanity to brush her hair. She didn't have her hairbrush, so her hands would have to do.
Upon standing in front if the vanity, she noticed that Uryu had a Jack and Jill bathroom as he had two sinks.
"Hm…I wonder who he shares this with?"
Shaking off that thought, she turned her attention to the mirror in front of her and saw that it was fogged up from the steam of the shower. She never closed the door between the powder room and bathroom so of course the steam from the shower traveled over.
She wiped the mirror clear with her hand and paused when she got a good look at herself. She looked defeated and exhausted, and her eyes were still tinted red from crying earlier. Sure, the shower helped her feel somewhat better, but she was still sad. She hated feeling sad. She hated that she had to see herself like this. She hated seeing herself look so…weak. The stress of it all heightened her emotions once more, making her tear up. A single tear escaped, and she wiped it away immediately. She then began combing through her hair with her fingers, pushing back her emotions as best as she could.
Bambietta walked out of the bathroom holding the bag that contained her wet clothes. She then paused, not knowing where to go exactly. She then heard some noises coming from down the hall and decided to follow them, eventually coming across the stairs that led to the second floor of the house. Seeing that the source of the noises seemed to be coming from upstairs, Bambietta climbed up them. Once she reached the second floor, she looked to her left and saw Uryu moving about in his kitchen, placing two plates on top of his kitchen island. He was about to move to get something else when he looked up and saw Bambietta standing at the top of the stairs. He smiled and walked over to her.
"Hey! Finally finished your shower?"
"Uh…yeah. Thanks," Bambietta replied. She noticed that his tone was a lot brighter than it was before. "Sorry if I was in there for too long."
"Don't worry about it. You're fine. Here let me take that from you," Uryu said, taking the bag of clothes from her. "I'll go put this by my dirty clothes bin."
He then made his way down the stairs Bambietta came up from. Bambietta took this time to look around room from the spot she was standing in. The entire second floor seemed to be an open space with the kitchen to her right and the living room to her left. And right in front of her was a dining table placed perfectly in the middle of each area. Just like with his entry hall, this area of his place felt homey. She then heard footsteps coming up the stairs, signaling Uryu's return.
"Okay, now that that's taken care of, I can get back to preparing us dinner," Uryu said as he reached the second floor.
"Dinner?" Bambietta questioned.
"Yep," Uryu said as he walked back into the kitchen. "I'm starving. And after the night you've had, I'm guessing you are, too."
Right after he said that Bambietta's stomach growled. She placed her hands on her stomach, feeling slightly embarrassed as she knew he heard that.
"Ah…well…"
Uryu chuckled, "I figured. Go on and have a seat at the table. I put your bag and glasses there. I wiped your glasses off for you, too."
"Oh…thanks," Bambietta said, walking towards the table where her bag and glasses were placed. She sat down, put her glasses on, and opened her bag to get her phone out. She wanted to see if she still had some juice left on her phone or if it died. She tapped the screen and noticed two things: that her phone battery was on 20% and that she had a ton of text notifications and few missed calls. She decided to deal with her low phone battery first.
"Do you have a phone charger I can use? One for an iPhone?"
"Hm? Oh yeah, I do! I'll get you in a minute, okay?" Uryu said as he put a plate in the microwave. "I just want to heat up our food first. I hope you like hamburger steak and rice."
"I've actually never had it before," Bambietta said, looking up at him.
"You haven't? Well, you're going to try it tonight," Uryu said with a smile.
"You cooked it?" Bambietta asked.
"No, I ordered two takeout orders of it," Uryu said.
"Why two?"
"Oh, I was going to eat one tonight and the other tomorrow."
"Wait what?" Bambietta said, frowning a bit. "I don't want to take away food you got for yourself."
"Bambi, it's fine," Uryu said waving her off. "I can always go back tomorrow and get another order if I want. Plus, you need it more than I do."
Bambietta opened her mouth to argue again but was interrupted by her stomach growling again. She grabbed her stomach and looked down, the feelings of embarrassment creeping back up. She knew he heard that one, too.
Uryu just chuckled at it again, "Told you."
The microwave went off and Uryu turned to open it to take the current plate out and replace it with the second one. As he was doing that, Bambietta picked up her phone again and decided to see who sent her all those texts and missed calls. Once she tapped her messages icon, the first name she saw immediately told her who it was: Meninas Mcallon. She paused and stared at the name for a moment before finally opening her chat with Meninas.
Did you make it back to your place safely?
Where are you?
Bambi, please don't ignore me.
I need to know if you made it back to your apartment safely.
I'm worried about you.
You left your umbrella and bike here, too.
Bambi, please call me back.
I know your mad, but I seriously need to know if you're okay.
Bambi please…
Bambietta then exited her messages icon and went to her call icon and saw that Meninas called her three times. She even left a voicemail, but Bambietta didn't feel like listening to it. She also didn't feel like responding to her texts or calling her back. For what? So, that she can chastise her some more? Why does she even care, anyway? For a long time, she hasn't truly cared about her feelings, so why would she care now. Why…just why?
"Bambi?"
Bambietta jumped, shaken out of her thoughts. She looked to her right and saw Uryu standing next to her holding the charger she asked for.
"Uh…here's the phone charger you wanted."
"Oh uh…yeah…thanks," she said, taking it from him. It was then she noticed that her eyes tearing up, clearly due to her thinking about Meninas. She blinked them away and hooked her phone up to the charger before turning to plug it in the wall next to her.
Uryu stood there watching her worriedly. He didn't miss the fact that her eyes were tearing up. He was about to ask her if everything was okay when the microwave went off again. He walked over and took the second plate out of the microwave. He placed it next to the first plate and then opened his utensils drawer to take out two forks and knifes. After putting each set of utensils on each plate, he picked the two plates up and walked back over to the table. He placed on plate in front of Bambietta and one plate in front of the empty seat next to her. He then walked back to the kitchen to get to water bottles from his fridge.
"I hope water is okay," he said walking back over to the table with two water bottles in hand.
Bambietta only nodded in response, and he placed the two water bottles on the table before taking his seat next to her. He placed his hands together and prayed for his food before digging in. Bambietta did the same a moment later before picking up her fork and knife. She slowly cut a piece of the hamburger steak and took a bite. She then repeated the motion again and again and again. Before she knew it, she was eating her food at a fast pace.
"Wow…you were hungrier than I thought," Uryu said, blinking in surprise as he watched her eat.
Bambietta took another bite before pausing, staring down at her plate as she chewed. "Sorry…" she whispered after swallowing the food in her mouth.
"No, no, no! Don't apologize!" Uryu said, putting his hands up a little.
He wasn't judging her at all. He just vocalized the observation he saw as she ate. He wasn't trying to upset her at all, but it seems like he did just that as he took in her demeanor. Or did he? He remembered that she was tearing up before when he handed her his extra phone charger, so she her demeaner now must be due to whatever happened then. No…it was before then actually. Whatever happened earlier to cause her to be out in the rain like that… that's the cause of her demeaner now. He wants to ask her what happened, but he knows he shouldn't. Not right now at least. All he can do right now is show her that he's there for her; Just like he did when they were kids all those years ago.
He raised his arm and stopped, hesitating for a moment. He then found his nerve and reached his arms towards her, gently resting it against her back. She felt a little tense, so he began to slowly rub her back in circles. It was something he did to try and help her relax when they were kids and he hoped it would work now.
"I mean it…it's okay," he said softly.
Bambietta said nothing, nor did she do anything to stop him from rubbing her back. She just continued staring down at her plate. A moment later, she closed her eyes and let out a sigh, the tension in her body slowly creeping away. Cutting another piece of meat, she continued eating, slowly getting back to the fast pace she had before.
Still rubbing her back, Uryu watched her eat. A minute later her stopped and removed his hand, turning his attention back to his food. They ate their food in silence, the clanking of their utensils being the only noise being heard. Silence is sometimes awkward, but in this moment…not so much.
"Sorry to keep you waiting Bambi. I was answering some emails from work. I don't know why they're emailing me when they know I took off this weekend," Uryu said, reaching the top of the stairs. "The guest room is ready for you."
He began walking to the living room but stopped at the sight before him. Bambietta, who he left sitting on his couch, was now lying down curled up on her side fast asleep, head resting comfortably on two of his couch pillows. Her glasses and phone, which was plugged in the portable outlet he had by the couch, were placed on the living room table. He sighed and walked over to stand at the end of his couch.
"I guess I kept her waiting longer than I thought."
He stood there for a moment, contemplating on if he should move her or not. Not that his couch wasn't comfortable because it was, but he thinks she'd prefer a bed to sleep on for the night. Eventually he decided against moving her as he didn't want to risk waking her. He then went back downstairs to find a throw blanket for her to use. Once he found one, he went back upstairs, walked over to his couch, and covered Bambietta with it.
Although she was asleep, Bambietta still felt the warmth coming from the blanket Uryu covered her with and proceeded to curl up even more underneath it. Now, only the upper half of her face was visible.
Crouching down to her level, Uryu took this time to observe her. Even with only half of her face visibly, he could still see the exhaustion etched in it while looking serene at the same time. Her chest was rising and falling at a gentle pace as well, meaning that her breathing was normal. All-in-all, this was the first time this entire evening that she looked somewhat at peace. Somewhat.
He sighed and stood up straight, raising his arms in the air as he stretched out his entire body. He then looked at the clock and saw that it was almost 10:00PM. He sighed again, exhaustion creeping up on him. He walked over to the thermostat and made sure it was on an appropriate number before turning off all the lights. And after taking one last look at Bambietta, he walked back downstairs for the night. He really needed to shower and go to bed.
Fresh from his shower, Uryu lied down on his bed, his hands crossed over his stomach. He had his eyes closed and kept them closed as he relaxed his body. Eventually he opened them and stared dead at his ceiling, deep in thought.
"What a night this has been."
That couldn't have been truer. If someone would've told him that morning that he would run into his childhood friend that night, he would've laughed them off. Running into Bambietta again was not on his bingo card. In fact, he never thought he'd see her again once she and her mother moved out of the Ishida household nineteen years ago after staying with them for four years. And those four years were the best years of Uryu's childhood. And that's all thanks to Bambietta Basterbine.
Uryu smiled at the thought of that but that smile immediately turned into a frown. He really couldn't believe that he encountered Bambietta again after all this time, but the way they did bothered him. A lot. He seriously wanted to know what happened to make her so upset. It had to have been bad if she was out and about in the rain not paying attention to her surroundings. He wants to help her but he doesn't know how.
He let out his umpteenth sigh of the night and turned his head in the direction his dirty clothes bin was in. As well as the bag that contained Bambietta's clothes. He was going to take to take care of that tomorrow. On top of that, he needed to figure out what to make for breakfast.
Uryu's eyes then widened.
"Wait…breakfast…THAT'S IT!"
He looked at the clock on his nightstand to check the time. It was 10:45PM.
"I hope she's still awake."
Grabbing his phone off his nightstand, he unlocked it and immediately went to his contact list. He scrolled until he found the name he was looking for and clicked it. He then clicked the mobile number and put the phone on speaker. It ringed three times before the person he called answered.
"Uryu? Is everything alright?" The person on the other end asked.
"Hey Orihime. Sorry to call so late but…I need your help."
A/N: It seems like Uyru and Bambietta know each other. But how? And what will they do now that they've run into each other on this rainy night?
I hope you all enjoyed the prologue! Leave a comment if you want! :):):)
