This is the first chapter to my not technically first fic, but the only one that will be up on my profile as of writing this. I may choose to write more when I'm done with this fic, if not oh well.
Not much else to say, enjoy.
Darkness was all he could see. He didn't hear or feel anything, but he knew that something was amiss. What exactly was wrong, he didn't know, but finding that out was sure to happen very soon.
He didn't know how long it had been, but it didn't feel like more than 20 minutes give or take. Finally, the darkness started to fade away, enabling him to start to see again. The process was rather slow, though his sense of smell, hearing and touch soon came too. Then the pain came. It was the only thing occupying his mind and body. That too faded after a couple of grueling minutes that felt more like hours, compared to the short amount of time that it actually was.
After regaining the capability to focus his eyes, he was confused about what he saw. Fire, smoke and not much else. He could faintly hear distant sounds of screaming and yeling, but it sounded like it was too far away from him to be of any help. Turning his head, he found that he was stuck under something, that something being a big chunk of debris, probably from the burning building he could somewhat see in his periphereal vision.
There he was on the pavement, stuck under a block of concrete with a metal rod sticking through his stomach. He didn't feel the pain anymore, nor did he feel the heat from the fire nor raindrops falling in his face. It wouldn't be long before he died and he knew it. Strangely, he wasn't scared of what he would happen, regardless of if it was nothing, some type of hell, afterlife or maybe even reincarnation. He would never have been prepared for what would actually happen to him, nor would he ever quite understand how and why he would end up where he did.
'I never thought this was how it would end.' He thought as he could feel himself getting groggy. It was his last thought too, as the darkness quickly came back and everything else slowly faded away again. Yet again, darkness was all he could see.
He came to in a groggy haze. Somehow everything felt normal yet different as he was stirred away from his slumber by his body waking up on its own. Slowly sitting up, he found that he didn't quite know where he was, yet he felt a weird semblance of familiarity from his surroundings. Looking around there wasn't much to see. There was a closet in the corner of the room, a dresser up against the wall adjacent to the bed he was sitting on and a nightstand to the left of the bed. There was also a door on the right side of the room, a couple feet from the closet. He looked to left, above the nightstand where there was a window, light shining through and illuminating the room he was in. It didn't take a genius to figure out that the sun peeking through the half closed blinds, was what caused him to awaken.
Getting up, he noticed two things, he seemed to be smaller than he remembered himself being and he was wearing a pair of pajamas that wasn't his. Normally he just slept in his boxers so this was a new experience to him, especially considering the fact that he never owned a pair of pajamas in his life.
Soon finding his way to the door, he opened it and entered the next room. It was the living room, or rather a combination of a living room on one end and a kitchen on the other. The living room-kitchen combo only contained a few things as well. It had a couch in one end of the room, a table with two chairs in the middle, with the kitchen being in the opposite end of the room. Not far from the bedroom door, there was another door, presumably this led to the bathroom, with the last door being at the end of a small corridor next to the kitchen.
For some reason, everything was familiar yet he knew that he'd never stepped foot in this place. Opting to explore further, he went to the door further down the same wall as the bedroom door was located and entered into what he found to be the bathroom, seemingly having guessed right. It was pretty small but it had one thing of note, a mirror.
Now normally a mirror in a bathroom was pretty ordinary, but what he saw when he looked in the mirror was certainly very strange to say the least. He saw his reflection, but it was very different to what he was used to. Instead of a 18 year old male of average height with black hair and brown eyes, he found that he was now a shorter male with blond hair and blue eyes. The most noteworthy detail of his new appearance were the three whisker marks on both of his cheeks.
"Oh my fucking god. You've got to be kidding me. I died and woke up as Naruto. Fucking Naruto." He said, now realizing why everything felt so familiar.
Naruto had been both his favorite anime and manga for quite a while. It wasn't the first manga he had ever read, but he had started reading it when he was 13, mirroring the age of Naruto and a lot of the other characters from the manga.
"This has to be a dream of some kind. Wait, how do I know if it's a dream or not. Oh yeah, people have extra fingers in dreams." he said as he looked at his hands.
"Oh shit, I have ten of them. This is not a dream." He said as he felt fear creeping in on him.
"Okay, I'm Naruto and it seems like it's during part one, but when exactly?" He said to himself, looking around and conveniently spotting a calendar on the fridge in the kitchen.
Looking at the calendar, he found that the graduation exam was a day prior and that today was team assignment day. Going back to the bedroom he threw on one of the ugly orange jumpsuits and made his way to kitchen to make breakfast. Not bothering with anything else he prepared and ate a cup of instant ramen, put on his sandals and his headband and made his way outside.
Thinking about which way the academy was, he found that he possessed memories of going to and attending the academy, as well as a lot of other memories of living life as Naruto in Konoha. Shrugging as he literally woke up in Naruto's body he supposed that it did make some sense to also have Naruto's memories. After a quick search through the foreign memories, feeling mostly like a movie or flashback of some kind, he made his way to the academy to be assigned a team.
The trip wasn't really a long one, as Naruto's apartment complex was pretty close to the academy, it didn't take more than five minutes to get there. Not a lot of people were out on the streets yet, as it hadn't even been an hour since dawn, though the few civilians that were up early and seemingly out and about, either paid him no mind at all, seemingly ignoring his very existence, or were more openly bitter towards him by sneering, glaring and whispering about him from a distance. He found that he wasn't really bothered much by this, since he knew why and also found it incredibly hilarious that the people of the village were dumb enough to ostracize one of the most powerful weapons in the village, because that all he was to most people. A weapon.
During his musings he had made it to the academy and he had left to was to go inside and find the classroom he was supposed to be assigned a team in. Looking through his memories, it didn't take long to remember which classroom was the right one and with that he made his way inside the building.
Making his way inside the classroom, he found that quite surprisingly he was the first to arrive, with no one else being present. Deciding to just wait for the others, he sat in silence.
'I should probably abuse the hell out of shadow clones for training, maybe learn fuinjutsu as well. I think I remember how to do a couple jutsu and their handsigns as well. This should be interesting if nothing else." While stuck on his own train of thought, he didn't realize that most of the other Genin had showed up. The only two that hadn't yet, were Sakura and Ino.
"Hey Naruto, what are you doing here? Don't you know only those who passed are allowed?" Kiba said with a smug grin.
"Are you blind Kiba? Don't you see the headband?" Naruto said as he pointed to his forehead where the headband resided.
"No way, you graduated! How did you manage that, Deadlast?" He asked while chuckling at his own words.
"That's classified information, dog breath." Naruto said, now with a smug grin of his own.
"Hmph, whatever. You're still the Deadlast, so nothing has changed." Kiba said as he turned around and walked back to his seat.
'We'll see about that.' Naruto thought to himself.
Soon Sakura and Ino came barging into the classroom, yelling about coming first and bickering about their mutual crush on the emo-prick known as Sasuke Uchiha, who as always was brooding with his chin resting on his hands and staring into nothing. How the girls found him cool instead of depressing was beyond him, but Naruto didn't really care much about what people thought in general. It wasn't important in the slightest, to him the most important thing was to get strong enough to survive what he knew to be coming and of course also try to enjoy what the world of Naruto had to offer. Maybe he could even test or debunk a few popular theories and ideas, the possibilities were literally endless, it was a fictional world after all.
Iruka came in shortly after Sakura and Ino had sat themselves next to Sasuke and started reading out the teams. It went exactly like the manga with all the teams being the exact same. All of the fodder unremarkable Genin and what team they were on was completely ignored by the blond, as well as the other teams since he already knew who would be assigned to which cell and what Jonin would be assigned to them as well.
Asuma, Kurenai and a couple unimportant and unnamed Jonin came and went with their Genin teams to who knows where, leaving the remaining three Genin of team 7 alone in the classroom. Iruka also left saying that their Jonin sensei would be there soon.
This left Naruto to do whatever he wanted until his sensei showed up. Not seeing much else to do he decided to take a nap. It was about two hours later that Kakashi finally decided to show up, late as usual.
"YOU'RE LATE!" Sakura screeched.
Sasuke said nothing and Naruto just looked on amused.
"Hmm, my first impression of you three. You're boring. Anyway, meet me up on the roof." He said as he disappeared in a puff of smoke.
None of them said anything as they all made their way up to the roof. When they arrived, Kakashi was already there, sitting against the railing and reading his porn while waiting for them. Deciding not to keep him waiting, they all sat down on the steps a couple feet in front of him, with Kakashi closing his book and putting it away.
"I'd like you three to introduce yourselves, you know your likes, dislikes, hobbies and dreams for the future." He said, gesturing to the three Genin in front of him.
"Would you mind going first Sensei, show us what you mean?" Sakura said.
"Well alright then, my name is Kakashi, my likes and dislikes are not of your concern, I have lots of hobbies and my dreams for the future? I haven't really thought about that." He said, with Sakura and Sasuke realizing that he only gave them his name. Naruto snickered a little and caught the attention of all three with his next statement.
"He likes his porn that is written by Jiraiya of the Sannin and hanging out with his colleagues/friends. He dislikes sweets and fried food. His hobbies include reading said porn, training and reminiscing about the past. His dreams for the future is to not let his fallen comrades down and probably not much more than that. There really isn't much to him to be honest, he's kind of boring if you ask me." After saying that everyone was shocked at how much Naruto seemed to know about the Jonin, especially said Jonin as he was under the impression that none of the Genin knew anything about him at all.
"Care to share how you know so much about me, Naruto?" The cyclops asked as he eyed Naruto intensely with his lone eye.
"Eh, you're pretty well known here in Konoha Kakashi-sensei." He said in a nonchalant tone.
"Well enough about me, your turn Pinkie." The silver haired Jonin said.
"I like- Iiiiighh." She said while screeching and blushing as she glanced at Sasuke. "My dislikes are Naruto-baka and Ino-pig. My hobbies are- iiiiigh." She once again screeched and blushed as she took a second glance at Sasuke. "And my dreams for the future- iiiiiiiiiigh." She screeched for a second time, still blushing and taking glances at Sasuke.
"Okaaay, moving on. Now you, Emo." Kakashi said as he was only slightly creeped out by Sakura's borderline obsession with the Uchiha.
"I don't particularly like anything and I dislike a lot of things. My hobby is training. I don't have a dream, it's more of an ambition as I will make it a reality. I will restore my clan and kill a certain man." The Uchiha said in his own edgy emo way.
"Alright, let's pretend that that wasn't ominous and creepy at all, your turn blondie." Kakashi said as he gestured for Naruto to go next, with him being the last.
"Well I like training until I drop and I dislike people that are too stupid to see the difference between a kunai and the scroll it's sealed into, as well as people that lie to me and traitors. I also dislike grown adult that obsess over small boys and arrogant egomaniacal pricks. My hobbies include training and not much else and my dream is to become the strongest shinobi of all time, picking up hot babes and otherwise having fun along the way of course. Oh and also to have a bridge named after me, that would be awesome!" He said ending with a grin and a chuckle.
"That was weirdly specific there at the end, but otherwise you seem to be the most normal of the three of you, especially considering you know a lot about me and most of the other Jonin I'm guessing." Kakashi said with a knowing look.
"Oh yeah, more than you'd think hehe." Naruto said in a casual way, almost like he was talking about the weather.
"Well in any case, I have to tell you that you're not actually Genin yet. You see, there's a second test that your Jonin sensei, meaning me, has to give you before you're Genin. If you fail, you'll be sent back to the academy for another year and the failure rate is approximately 67 percent." He said with glee.
Surprisingly, only Sasuke and Sakura were shocked at this, Naruto seemingly already knew about this. Oh well, it was possible for anyone to find out if they had been told ahead of time, so it wasn't that weird for at least one of the students to already be aware of the second test. That student being Naruto was a little puzzling but oh well.
"Meet me at training ground 3 at 5 am. tomorrow and I would advise against eating breakfast, as you'll just throw it up." He said in an ominous tone.
He then vanished in a puff of smoke, leaving the three Genin to their own devices.
"Oh yeah, Duck butt, Fan girl. Just so you know, teamwork is very important to Kakashi for certain reasons, so his test will probably be centered around that. Also, he didn't outright order us not to eat breakfast so do with that what you wish." The blond said as he opened the door to the stairs and began ascending them soon after, hearing a yell from Sakura about not badmouthing her 'Sasuke-kun.'
It wasn't long until Naruto found himself at home once again. Deciding to get started on his training, he made a shadow clone and told it to go to an unoccupied training ground and make a bunch more shadow clones to practice various jutsu and chakra control. With that done he ate some lunch and headed for the couch where he sat down in a meditative position to try and enter his seal, where his mindscape was located.
It took about five minutes until he began to feel a tugging sensation, figuring what it most likely meant, he allowed himself to transported to his mindscape.
It was exactly as he remembered it being from the manga, sewer-like with water going up to his shins. Making his way down the biggest corridor for a couple of minutes soon brought him to the place he was looking for, the cage of the beast sealed within him.
"Hello there fox, we need to talk. Well I need to talk and for you to listen. I have a lot to say, most of which will shock you so please let me finish and I will answer any and all questions truthfully afterwards." The blond said as he simply sat down and waited for an answer.
"Not entirely what I expected of you to say upon our first time coming face to face, but I will listen to what you have to say, human." The Kyubi said in a low growl.
"Alright, so first off, I know a lot about a lot of things that has happened and will happen, one of those being your name, the name of the other eight tailed beasts and the name of your creator. I even know his brother's and his mother's name too. I'll even prove it." He said pausing to let the fox digest and speak up if he desired to do so. After a small period of time, he simply nodded as to say 'go on.'
"So names of you and your siblings. There's Skukaku the one-tailed tanuki, Matatabi the two-tailed cat made of fire, Isobu the three-tailed tortoise, Son Goku the four tailed Gorilla, Kokuo the five-tailed horse-dolphin, Saiken the six-tailed slug, Chomei the seven-tailed rhinoceros-beetle, Gyuki the eight-tailed octopus-ox and finally you, Kurama the nine-tailed fox. You're all commonly referred to as demons, but you aren't you're essentially chakra construct given life by the Sage of six paths, or Hagoromo Otsutsuki. His brother's name was Hamura Otsutsuki and his mother's name was Kaguya Otsutsuki." The blond listed as the Kyubi grew more and more curious as to how exactly this human knew all of this.
"How do you know all of that, human?" The fox asked, in a surprisingly calm tone.
"I've quite literally read it all. Technically I'm not actually Naruto, though I do have his memories so I guess I am both him, but also the person I was before. Before you ask, I don't know how it happened, but I woke up this morning in this body where previously I was in another dimension or universe where everything in this universe is a work of fiction. I essentially was a fan of the series and now I'm in it. I know it sounds weird, but you can sense negative emotions and I assume intentions of deceit qualify as that." The blond said in a serious tone.
"Hmm you're right on the last part there, though I do wonder why you're telling me all of this." Kurama said, raising and eyebrow at the blond.
"It's quite simple honestly, I require your assistance to prevent the ten-tails from being resurrected, by the madman that released you and put you in a genjutsu to wreak havoc on Konoha approximately thirteen years ago. In about three and a half years, a group he created called Akatsuki will start capturing all of the tailed beast's and put you all in the Gedo statue, to resurrect the ten-tails. I want to stop that from happening. You're also quite likeable so I'd want to somewhat befriend you as well, though that is entirely up to you." The blond further explained. After a period of silence with Naruto simply waiting on what Kurama's answer would be, he got it in the form of Kurama extending his paw to the bars of the cage in a fist.
"This should be enough of an answer for now, though I do have further questions, those can wait until a later date when I have gathered my thoughts more on the matter. For now, I will help you, though you'll need the key to the seal to get access to more than one tail of my chakra." Kurama explained as Naruto bumped his fist with him.
"You're free to ask me anything and we'll have to wait for Jiraiya to be back in Konoha for the key to the seal, he has it." Naruto said as he stood up and got ready to exit the seal. For now, I'll rip the seal itself off, to give you access to speak to me in my mind, as well to better be able to control your chakra." The blond said before jumping up ripping off the paper part of the seal. Immediately he could feel a difference, as a small amount of Kurama's chakra entered his chakra pool and slightly increased it, as well as completely merged with it to give him better control and access to negative emotion sensing.
With all of that done and no more words coming from the fox, Naruto let himself be pulled back to the real world.
It was now night time and by looking at his clock Naruto found that it was about 8:30. Knowing that Kakashi was going to be at least 3 hours late the following day, he decided to head to the training grounds for an hour before getting some dinner at Ichiraku's.
Making his way out of his door, he had an idea for something that he wanted to test when he reached the training grounds.
'I wonder if chakra is based on personality traits and if so, could I have more than wind release since I'm kind of the merging of two people now? Hmm food for thought.'
And that's the end of the first chapter. This is my third attempt at writing fanfiction so I'd say I'm still quite new to this. I have deleted the two other attempts as I just can't seem to find the interest in either of them at all. I don't have a schedule for updates so they may vary as I only write when inspiration hits, but reviews, favorites and follows greatly boost my will to write so do with that information as you wish. English is also not my first language, but I do speak it fluently so there's that.
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the chapter.
Any and all CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is welcome, any suggestions are also welcome as well as ideas for pairings.
