The crowd's screams enveloped Harry as he stepped out of the tent. Chants of "Let's go Potter," "Go Harry," and "Gryffindor is best!" were bouncing around the stadium. Harry took in the stadium around him as his eyes adjusted to the light. Boulders were spread out in the granite grounds as a type of cover with a flood of green, yellow, blue, and red was above him in the stands. But in the center of it all was a Hungarian Horntail in its glory. In any other situation, Harry would've been impressed. Outside of Norbert, Harry has never seen a dragon, let alone a full-grown nesting mother. However, since she was between him and staying alive, Harry had other things on his mind.
Right behind the Horntail was her nest was her nest with a glimmering gold egg. Harry stared down the Horntail, waiting to see if she'd be making the first move. His mind flashed back to when Hermione drilled Harry on how to survive a dragon:
"Harry, whatever you do do not make yourself seem like a target when you furst enter the arena. We don't know what you have to do, but that's all irrelevant when it comes to you surviving, okay?"
"Hermione, all I'm good at is Defense and Quidditch. Even then, defeating a dragon is a but different than a boggart."
Hermione looked at Harry and sighed. "Harry, you're an incredible wizard. I'm sure you can think of something. You always make it out of these terrible situations better than ever."
With a deep breath, Harry slowly moved his wand up and tried his first plan.
"Accio broom!"
Harry scanned the skies to find his broom, praying his spell would work. If he can get his broom, he could ride it to the golden egg and escape before the dragon would eat him.
"There it is!" Harry thought as he watched his broom fly down from the Gryffindor Tower. "Just a few more seconds and I'll be home free."
As Harry was celebrating his successful spell, a massive roar broke his concentration.
"Oh crap. How did I forget about the dragon? It's a bit big to miss."
As Harry watched his broom approach, he started to run behind one of the boulders to avoid dragon fire. He got behind the boulder just in time to avoid the dragon fire. Unfortunately, his Firebolt got caught in the dragonfire.
"NO! Sirius is going to kill me for getting that destroyed if the dragon doesn't get me first."
Harry tried to reevaluate his plan. Summoning the broom clearly failed and he's now stuck behind a boulder with a dragon trying to set him on fire. He tried remembering other ways to take on dragons. If only Harry could turn invisible. Then he could sneak past the dragon and take the egg from the nest.
"Hmm… this could be crazy but I remember Parvati once saying dragons were related to snakes. I could try speaking to him?"
"Hello great creature! My name is Harry Potter and I am in awe of your presence."
Harry wanted to praise the Horntail. Who doesn't love flattery? Clearly the dragon understood him as it stopped breathing fire.
"Yes, you marvelous creature, greatest of the dragons. You clearly are the most beautiful, strongest, majestic creature here."
The Horntail was silent so Harry took that as a sign. He stepped out from behind the boulder and slowly started to make his way towards the dragon singing its praises, trying to reason with it.
"Noble beast, I must ask the tiniest of favors. At your nest is a fake egg made of gold. All I ask is to take it so I stop pestering you."
While the Hungarian Horntail didn't respond, he didn't try to attack him. Harry took that as a sign and made his way to the nest slowly to not startle the beast. As Harry was about to reach down to grab the egg, the dragon suddenly roared and made a snap at him. Harry ran away from the nest to the nearest boulder to protect himself. Now that parseltongue didn't work and his broom was destroyed, Harry had no clue what to do.
The dragon took to the air and roared. The crowd was screaming. Whether it was out of terror or excitement, Harry couldn't tell. He exhausted all his options at this point. As the dragon was about to breathe first and take Harry out, he impulsively waved his wand one last time. For what, Harry couldn't say. But as Harry raised his arm, sparks started flying. Some loose rocks came together and started to transform. Harry shot that object towards the dragon and the dragon clamped down.
*SQUEAK SQUEAK*
Harry froze and took in what he saw. The dragon clamped down its jaw again.
*SQUEAK SQUEAK*
The dragon went down to the ground and started playing with the rubber squeaky toy. Harry decided to seize the moment and ran towards the nest for the egg. He grabbed the egg and took one last look at the dragon. It got up and went towards Harry. It dropped the squeaker toy and looked at Harry as if it was waiting for something. Harry grabbed the toy and threw it as far as he could with the Hungarian Horntail chasing after it. This game continued for a few more minutes, Harry getting closer to the tent with each toss.
With one last toss, Harry went into the tent and took a deep breath. Hermione tackled him with a hug before his scores were announced.
"Last but not least, we had our third champion domesticate his dragon! For that attempt, he has been awarded 37 points. The first task is over!"
"Harry, how'd you know to do that?"
"Hermione, if I knew I would've told you. You could say it was like magic!"
