She was late.
She was two weeks late.
She couldn't be... they were always so careful.
It's not that she didn't want... that... very much the opposite, in fact, but she didn't feel ready. Was he ready? Would she ever be ready?
Sabine paced back and forth in the refresher as she waited. The test was supposed to show results in two minutes, but it felt like it was taking an eternity. Her heart was beating out of her chest as the anticipation became too much to bear. She dropped to her knees and offered a silent prayer to the Force to give her strength. She wanted... she needed... to be strong enough. For herself, for Ezra... for...
The test stick buzzed, and she nervously wrapped her fingers around it and brought it up so she could see the results.
A plus.
It was positive.
She was having a baby.
They were having a baby.
The Mandalorian took a deep breath and counted to ten. She thought about everything that had led up to this moment. The Rebellion, Ezra's disappearance, her decade without him, her time on Peridea, the war against Thrawn, her and Ezra's marriage. Nearly twenty years of her life... it all felt like it was coming to this. She and Ezra were together, they were married, and they were going to be parents.
She couldn't help but chuckle at the whole thing. If someone had told her back when she was 17 and had just met Ezra that not only would she be his wife one day, but also the mother of his child, she probably would have punched that person in the face. But now... she smiled.
"I... I can do this..."
She placed her hand on her still-flat belly.
"...we can do this... You and me, ad'ika... I just hope your Dad doesn't freak out."
Ezra was going to be in the city all day for some lame social function that Ryder was putting on. Sabine had gotten tired of those over the years so she had opted to stay home. Now, she had a lot of work to do to prepare for Ezra's return that night.
Ezra stepped out of the lift into the living room and began tugging the collar of his tunic. "Bine? I'm home!!", he called out.
"I'm in the kitchen!!", his wife's angelic voice called back. He smiled and walked into the kitchen to find her placing a Takodana chicken into a roasting pan. Sabine saw him and smiled. "Hey. How was it?"
Ezra playfully shrugged and walked over to kiss her cheek. "Buncha soldiers and politicians patting themselves on the back. Same old same old. I'm glad to be home. You decided to cook dinner for me?"
"For both of us, silly", she scolded as she picked up the roasting pan, "Do me a favor and open up the oven please." Ezra nodded and opened it, gasping when he saw something baking on the top rack.
"Uh... Sabine... there's a bun in here."
She feigned ignorance and looked over his shoulder. "Oh", she said flatly, "How did that get in there?"
Ezra grabbed some oven mitts and removed the bun. "Does this mean... what I think it means?"
Sabine put the chicken in the oven and closed it, hopping up onto the counter and sitting there staring at her husband. "What do you think it means?"
"You... me... we're...?", he stammered.
She nodded. "We are."
Ezra let out a sound that could only be described as a triumphant squeak as he scooped Sabine up into a tight embrace, spinning her around the room happily. "I can't believe it!! I really can't believe it!!" Sabine hugged him back and felt tears of joy pricking at her eyes, her heart pounding once again, this time with elation. When Ezra set her down, he got down on his knees and kissed her abdomen.
"Hey, little one. I'm your Daddy. You don't know me yet but I already love you. We already love you", he said as he placed his hand over Sabine's belly. She placed her hand on top of his and smiled.
"Yeah... we do... no matter how unexpected you were."
Hope you guys liked this. I just needed to pump out some fluff in an attempt to cheer myself up.
