Madara and Konan walked to Ichiraku, there was an air of awkwardness between the two. Konan was simply giving him his space as he didn't intend to reveal he wasn't Madara. She wondered if she could find records of any missing or supposedly dead Uchiha around twenty years old.
"The stories you've told me, how much of it has been truth?"
Tobi merely quirked his head slightly, "Most of it. Other times I merely bent the truth to fit what is true for me."
"The boulder crushing you?"
"Yes, that's what gave me my scars. Now please, stop pestering me." He looked forward.
She had to comply with his request.
They arrived at Ichiraku and entered through the flaps, Obito saw Kakashi sitting at the counter with a man with long white hair on his right. Obito saw that man in his dreams last night, this was not going to be good.
Konan recognized that white mane, "Master Jiraiya?" She said, hoping she was wrong.
Jiraiya turned on his stool and Kakashi followed suit. Jiraiya was unprepared to see how much his student grew. He smiled brightly, "Konan? My, you've grown into a beautiful young woman!"
Konan blushed a little, "Jiraiya-Sensei!"
Jiraiya chuckled and asked, "How are Nagato and Yahiko?"
Konan had a grim expression, "Yahiko died five years ago, and Nagato crippled himself trying to avenge him."
Jiraiya bowed his head, "I'm sorry Konan. Maybe I should have stayed to accompany you three."
Konan also bowed her head, "I doubt you would have changed anything. Hanzo was able to fight and beat you before when you had two allies."
"Hanzo, so he..." Jiraiya gripped his fist. "I wish I could've done something to help at the very least."
Konan just walked over to the stool to Jiraiya's right, "I wish I could have too."
Jiraiya turned his attention to Konan's masked compatriot. "Now you, I'm not familiar with, who are you?"
The masked man began spinning and twirling on his feet, "I... am... Tobi!" He pointed a thumb at himself.
Kakashi sighed, "Yep, that's Obito. But he seems to not hold anything back when it comes to embarrassing himself. What is he hiding behind that facade I wonder?"
Jiraiya seemed to sweat drop at seeing the young man just do something so childish in a public place, "Umm, that's uh... something I guess."
Tobi walked to the stool on Kakashi's left, "So you're Kono-chan's dad or something right? I want a dad, can you be Tobi's dad?"
Jiraiya was confused just by hearing that question, "What?!"
Obito tapped on the counter, "Tobi is ready for ramen."
Kakashi got up off his stool, "Sorry, Tobi. But we've got to go. Our mission awaits." He put his hands in his pockets. "Lord Third is gonna have to give us an S rank mission with Jiraiya with us." Jiraiya followed Kakashi and stepped off his stool.
Obito was upset, he wanted to eat but he had no choice. He got off of his stool and slumped his way out of Ichiraku, "Aw, Tobi wanted to eat something..."
Konan giggled at Tobi's expense, "Did you not even have anything to eat?"
"Yeah, Tobi had a bowl of cereal before meeting you."
Kakashi looked over his shoulder, "Then you should be perfectly fine."
Jiraiya was peeking at Tobi now and then, "There's something off with him. He might've hit his head one too many times."
Tobi was skipping and frolicking as they walked towards the Hokage estate. An older man with a scar on his chin watched him, "This is the outsider with wood style? He seems like an ignorant child to me."
Obito could feel himself being watched maliciously but not by whom.
"Danzo Shimura, seven o'clock on the rooftop," Madara said manifesting in front of Obito.
"Danzo? The same Danzo that caused Hanzo to see the old Akatsuki as hostile?"
"The one and the same. Though, I doubt you want to inform Konan of that."
Kakashi stepped his foot in front of Obito which caused the Uchiha to fall on his face, Obito stood up wiping himself of dirt.
"Tobi, you've got to be more careful where you step. If you don't, maybe next time something could fall on you." Kakashi said trying to get a reaction out of Obito.
Obito raised his head slowly and with a quirk of his head looked at Kakashi, "What's that supposed to mean, Kakashi-senpai?"
Kakashi shrugged, "Take it however you like Tobi. And also, stop calling me senpai. I'm not your elder."
Obito sneered at Kakashi, "What's wrong with him all of a sudden." He thought to himself.
Jiraiya and Konan felt how rude Kakashi was to Tobi, they both felt it was unwarranted.
"Hey, Kakashi. Don't be so callous to your teammate." Jiraiya said.
Kakashi just waved his hand back, "Tobi can take it."
Hiruzen was looking at A-rank and S-rank missions in front of him, he was unsure which one would need Kakashi's team more.
And just as he was deciding which one Kakashi and his team walked in, with Jiraiya along with them.
"Jiraiya? I didn't hear you were in the village. What brings you here with Kakashi's team no less?" Hiruzen asked tipping his Hokage hat up.
"Well, when I received a letter from Kakashi regarding one of my students I just had to return. But I also don't want to stop them from going on any missions. I hope that my tagging along won't change their mission."
Hiruzen moved one scroll out of the way and Kakashi walked up and grabbed the scroll that was near the edge. Hiruzen began explaining, "There is a village near the border of the land of grass, there is a Shinobi who has stolen a scroll full of forbidden jutsu. Your mission is to detain this Shinobi however you see fit, and obtain the scroll in his possession. But be wary, he most likely knows some of the forbidden jutsu within the scroll."
Kakashi nodded, "Understood, Lord Third."
Team Kakashi and Jiraiya stepped out of the Hokage's office. Hiruzen let out a sigh of relief, "With Jiraiya accompanying them they can't fail."
After the four set out to the border of the land of grass they journeyed for hours until they came across a hot spring and an inn.
"Hey, let's stay at the inn. They have a wonderful hot spring. You'd like it Konan." Jiraiya said.
Konan felt a little awkward, "I dunno, I've never been before."
Kakashi shrugged, "Actually, I think it's a good idea."
Jiraiya smiled, "That's two votes yes. Tobi, it's up to you."
Obito felt like Kakashi was plotting something, but what it was was anyone's guess. "Ooh! Hot springs sound like fun!" He said all giddy.
Konan sighed, "Wonderful."
The hot spring was nice, there were two sections of it, one for men and the other for women. They were separated by a very tall wooden wall.
Obito did not go into hot springs, however. He was concerned about whether his Hashirama cell skin would cause Kakashi to be more suspicious of him than he already was.
"Just do it, Obito. They think that Orochimaru experimented on you, showing your skin would confirm that in their eyes." Madara said from behind the toweled, masked Obito.
Obito sighed, "Fine. The fewer suspicions the better." He walked out of the men's bathroom and into the hot springs. There he saw Jiraiya already sitting in the hot springs talking to an older man. Obito looked around and saw Kakashi still wearing his mask like always, but he had his eye closed like he was meditating.
Obito stepped into the hot spring, the warm water giving him a cool sensation up his leg. Obito quickly sat down in the water, keeping that sensation all over his body. It was calming.
Kakashi opened one eye and saw the mixed-colored skin Obito had, it was like he had a disease.
"Oi, Tobi!" He called out, "How did your body gain such an unnatural color?"
"The snake man experimented on Tobi by removing half of Tobi's body and replacing it with the First Hokage's cells. That's why Tobi has such a stronger Wood ability than the boy with weird eyes." Obito said mimicking wide eyes with his fingers.
Kakashi didn't know how to respond, he just thought to himself. "Is it possible he's told the truth? Nothing seems to be a lie or entirely fabricated. If it is in fact Obito, it's possible that he lost his memory after Orochimaru experimented on him. But it's also possible that he's a spy for some unknown party. The night he attacked Gato's home he seemed to have a different personality about him, like he's hiding his true self." He gave Obito one last look, "I'll figure out what happened, Obito. Whether you tell me or not." Kakashi closed his eye and leaned back against the stone wall of the pool.
Obito breathed in relief, he felt that the more he talked to Kakashi the closer Kakashi would get to unveiling him. Jiraiya scooted next to Tobi, placing his arm around Tobi he spoke silently. "So, Tobi, do you mind telling me what you've been doing with Konan?"
Obito gulped as he tried to avoid eye contact, "Tobi met Konan and her friends a long time ago. Back then there was a boy with orange spikey hair, just like Tobi's but a little bit shorter." Obito said muffling his long hair.
Jiraiya didn't seem amused, "I think you should stop, you're not fooling anyone. In my years I've learned that those who have the most jokes or act the most childish are because they have the most traumatizing pasts. I don't buy for a second that Orochimaru experimented on you. Now sure it's possible but I doubt it as Orochimaru was still a Shinobi of Konoha up until four years ago. And you just said that you met Konan while Yahiko was alive and she said Yahiko died five years ago."
Obito had to admit, Jiraiya was very intelligent. Just like Minato-Sensei who determined everything about Kamui in just four instances. So Obito had to be careful with his next words, "Maybe Tobi wasn't experimented on by him per se, but I gained Wood style not by my choice." He spoke as Tobi but not showing any carefree nature he once had.
Jiraiya could tell that Tobi wasn't lying, but he wasn't telling the full truth either. "Now, personally I don't care what your past was. However, I do care about the well-being of Konan and Nagato." The way Jiraiya talked was that of a protective father. "If any harm comes to them I'll figure out whoever you were and make sure you can't hide anywhere." His tone was harsh.
Jiraiya lightened up and smiled, "Hey, Tobi. Are you interested in taking a look?" He pointed to the wooden wall that separated the men's and women's springs.
Obito had his mouth wide open, how could he go from a serious conversation to let's be peeping Tom's? Jiraiya laughed, "Oh, don't be such a sour puss. I saw some lovely ladies on our way in."
Madara appeared behind Jiraiya, "With your abilities, you could be the perfect person for checking out women. An opportunity like this doesn't come around often."
Obito sighed, "Alrighty, Tobi will try it."
Even though Kakashi couldn't quite tell what Tobi and Jiraiya were talking about, he knew in his gut that it had to involve checking out the women in the next spring. If it was then Kakashi wanted no part in it, mostly because Jiraiya was never subtle about peeping. Though it did make for good material in his books.
When Obito and Jiraiya stood in front of the wooden wall, Obito used his wood style to create two holes to peek through for himself and Jiraiya.
Obito struggled to see anything until he saw a beautiful woman with blonde hair that went past her shoulders, but he couldn't see her face or her breasts. Obito looked past the blonde woman and saw a woman with short brown hair, if the girl had purple markings on her face she would look just like her...
As Obito was thinking about Rin he was ignorant of the blonde woman he previously looked at put a towel on and walked to the peek holes, Jiraiya recognized the woman and moved away from the wall with a roll. And then a fist was slammed through the wall and into Obito's chest. He felt immense pain as he was slammed into the ground and Obito was left breathless.
The blonde woman stood over him angrily, She didn't recognize him but she did recognize, "Jiraiya..." She said still looking at Obito on the ground.
Jiraiya stopped in his tracks, he smiled nervously, "Tsunade. I didn't think you'd be in the land of Fire, what brings you here?"
Tsunade looked down on Obito, she stomped on Obito's right shoulder. "I hope you were right-handed, perverted freak." If Obito could feel it he would know that she tried breaking his arm.
Tsunade turned around to face Jiraiya, "Jiraiya, do you remember what happened the last time I caught you?"
Jiraiya just gulped and then tried running away. What happened next was a flash of blurs and screams.
Obito got up and retreated back to the changing room, he struggled to put his clothes back on with only one arm. But he managed to get his pants on, and his shirt that was an almost impossible task. He stopped completely when he felt someone behind him, their gaze was almost chilling.
"So, was that your first time doing something like that or your first time dealing with a woman stronger than you?" It was Kakashi's voice.
Obito turned to his left and saw Kakashi putting his clothes on, "I guess it was both."
That caused Kakashi to chuckle, but his chuckle was interrupted when he looked over at Tobi. Kakashi had begun thinking, he never understood it then but it could explain something now.
Back during the night he tried saving Rin, they were chased by Kiri Anbu. And when they were cornered by the Anbu Kakashi was only able to kill a couple of them before Rin jumped in front of his Chidori, that image will never stop haunting him. But Kakashi remembered falling over in exhaustion and still surrounded by Anbu, he tried his best to remember anything that stood out of the ordinary, and to his surprise, he remembered hearing someone screaming at the top of their lungs in agony. None of the Kiri Anbu were injured at that time, and the only person Kakashi could think of was someone in emotional pain, Obito. And that would explain both his Mangekyou and the bloody corpses that he saw when he woke up. But that would mean that Obito awakening his Mangekyou strengthened him to be higher than an experienced Jounin, maybe even strong enough to challenge a Kage. Is that the person Obito has become?
Kakashi left his thoughts and looked back at Obito and saw how he was struggling to put his shirt on with one arm. "It's impressive you can still move after being hit by Lady Tsunade, she usually leaves Jiraiya hospitalized for weeks."
Obito just pointed to his right side, "The Wood stuff heals me fast."
Kakashi sighed, "Here let me help." He walked toward Obito and grabbed his arm. Obito tried jerking it away but even he was unable to do so from Tsunade's punch, so he sighed and let Kakashi help him. Once Obito had his arm in his shirt he put the vest on, which was a lot easier than the shirt.
He stepped out of the men's changing room with Kakashi and saw Konan leaning against the wall in the hallway, She was going to go into the springs but after she saw Tsunade punch straight through the wooden wall. It turned her away as she was embarrassed just seeing the orange mask in the dust. "So, you followed Jiraiya-sensei's lead did you?"
Obito hunched his shoulder, "So you saw that, huh?"
Konan stopped leaning against the wall and walked away toward the front desk, "Come on, let's get our rooms." She would've teased him but she felt that he already got what he deserved.
Kakashi and Obito followed after Konan and they greeted the receptionist and found out there were only two rooms available for the night. Konan cursed that she'd have to stay the night in the same room with, one a pervert, two a closeted pervert, or three a man who followed his master's wishes who may or may not have been a pervert. Out of the three Madara was her preferred choice, though it wasn't because she was growing feelings for him. It was out of the lesser of three evils in her mind.
"If I must share a room with someone I would prefer my partner. He's never shown any signs of affection in the past, so I doubt he would try anything in the middle of the night."
Obito was surprised, he thought for sure that she'd prefer a nice and quiet night with Kakashi. Especially after having an incident with Jiraiya not too long ago. Women always preferred Kakashi, it was probably due to his stupid perfect hair.
Konan twirled a room key on her finger, "You coming, Tobi?"
Obito shook himself of any jealousy he had and followed Konan, "Tobi is coming." He marched after her.
The room that Konan and Obito would have to share was a lot smaller than anticipated. It only had one bed, one single chair, a closet, and a bathroom with no shower curtains.
Seeing the single bed the two glanced at each other, but before Konan could speak Obito turned back to the bed. "It would be impolite if I didn't let the lady have the bed, I will take the floor til morning." He used his Madara voice.
Konan was slightly irritated that he would give up the bed without a second thought, "Are you giving me the bed just because I'm a woman?"
Obito walked forward and grabbed a singular pillow off the bed, "No. I am used to sleeping on such hard surfaces that I am not bothered by it in the slightest. There will be no further discussion on this matter."
Obito placed the pillow on the floor and laid down, laying his head on the pillow. He closed his eye and hoped he would fall asleep.
Konan moved the blanket on the bed and shimmied underneath it, She stared at the ceiling thinking about her unknown Uchiha compatriot. She said a question out loud, "If you are an Uchiha then what was growing up in the Hidden Leaf like?" Konan said.
An air of complete silence filled the room. Konan didn't expect him to answer, she'd probably pushed him a little too much.
Obito sighed and spoke in his normal voice, "I grew up an orphan, just like you." That was all he said to her as he drifted off to sleep.
Konan looked over at the Uchiha, "Why am I so fascinated by you, Uchiha?" She fell asleep soon after questioning herself. There was a darkness that the Uchiha carried, but yet there was always kindness underlying everything he did. He was like a dark reflection of Yahiko in many ways. Was that what drew her to him? No, it couldn't be. The Uchiha was anything but Yahiko. Nothing he did would ever be comparable to Yahiko. But maybe if she knew who he was then she could learn to like him, as a friend or...
She couldn't be too presumptuous.
