Robin laughed, Mister Freeze spun towards the noise only to be met with a kick to his helm. Seeing the villain was distracted, Robin launched himself up and slammed down onto the helmet. As the boy Wonder skidded away, throwing two birdarangs as he went, Freeze was axe kicked in the back, winding him.
"Come on Vanga! I had him!" Robin called his partner. Vanga shrugged his matte grey, kevlar top glinting in the sun. His attire was a mix of Batman's and Robin's, a grey kevlar skin tight top with a black bat symbol across his chest that stretched from shoulder to shoulder, a yellow utility belt, black pants of a similar material to his upper half, sleek black pull on boot and a matching grey mask. And of course, to match Robin, he donned a black cape with yellow underlinings.
Looking up from his place on the ground Freeze said, "Oh. Baby Bat and Boy Wonder." Pushing himself up, he continued, "The Bat sent you two to drag me off to prison? Frankly, I'm underwhelmed."
"Great, but I'm kind of in a hurry here." Robin replied, readying his staff. Vanga snorted from his spot away from robin.
"Tut-tut, kids–Always in such a rush." Freeze narked. Brushing his armour and firing up his freeze ray.
"Not talking to you."
Batman appeared in mid air and smashed his fist into the ice villain's face.
"Time to go." Bruce rasped.
"Today's the day." Bruce said placing a hand on Dick's shoulder, Vanga made a ticking noise from a few feet away.
"Welcome to the hall of Justice." Oliver continued, standing by Speedy.
"Headquarters of the Justice League." Aquaman finished.
"Oh man!" A familiar voice exclaimed from behind the seven. The Flash zoomed in and closely followed Wally. "I knew we'd be the last ones here!"
"Is that Batman?" Someone cried from the crowd of citizens and paparazzi.
"No no, that one is Vanga! Batman is the one with the cowl, and there's the boy wonder, Robin in the red!" Their friend cried, back correcting them.
"I see Flash and Flash Jr.!" A woman said eagerly, cameras clicked loudly around them.
"His name's Speedy, duh." A man replied to her.
"No, Speedy's Green Arrow's sidekick." Someone else called.
"Well that makes no sense." Another commented.
"Ready to see the inner sanctum?" Green Arrow asked Roy.
Roy glanced at his mentor, "Born that way."
"I'm glad we're all here." Kaldur'ahm started.
"Have all five sidekicks ever been in the same place at the same time?" Wally asked the group, receiving a shake of his head from Vanga.
"Don't call us sidekicks, not after today." Roy snapped.
"Sorry," Muttered KF, "First time at the hall. I'm a little overwhelmed."
"You're overwhelmed, Freeze was underwhelmed. Why isn't anyone ever just whelmed?" Dick grumbled.
"I'm constantly whelmed and please stop butchering the English language, little wing." Vanga smiled, tapping the boy wonder on the back of the head.
They entered through the doors and Vanga was to say the least, extremely bored. Glancing up the large statues of the original seven leaguers. Sighing he followed the group blocking out the conversation around him. The eldest sidekick of Batman had no idea why they were here, it never really mattered what side of the glass you were on, you were still never going to be on the Justice League. He knew Batman wouldn't allow Robin or himself onto the team, hell, even if they managed to get on the team, Vanga could only imagine that Bruce would give Dick the opportunity first. He was his favourite sidekick after all, to Bruce, it didn't matter that Vanga had been training to be Robin as long as he could remember, it didn't matter that even if he gave his life over to fighting crime (as if he hadn't already), Dick would be the preferred choice, and he would most likely always would be. Not that he hated Dick for it, Dick was his little brother, and he couldn't imagine not having him around, the Manor used to be so empty with only he and Alfred there. But he couldn't help but resent Batman for it, giving Dick his title of Robin whilst Vanga was injured, not giving him a say in whether he could keep his role. For almost a month, Vanga locked himself in his room, fashioning himself the name Vanga, but he wasn't Vanga in that time, nor was he Robin, he was just Nathan 'Nate' Wayne, the back up Bruce Wayne in case anything happened to him.
Nathan was snapped out of his unpleasant thoughts by a sharp slap to the back, glancing to his right, Nate glared at his replacement and Robin slinked away to stand by Wally, leaving the vigilante alone.
"That's it?" Hissed Speedy. "You promised us a real look inside, not a glorified backstage pass!"
"It's the first step. You've been granted access few others get." Aquaman replied firmly looking at the young archer.
"Oh really?! Who cares what side of the glass we're on!"
"Roy, you just need to be patient." Green Arrow attempts, stepping towards the agitated hero.
"What I need is respect." Roy returned to the other sidekicks that lounged around, "They're treating us like kids. Worse–Like sidekicks! We deserve better than this."
Aqualad, Kidflash and Robin looked at each other then back at Speedy. Robin looked at Vanga who ignored him.
"You're kidding right? You're playing their game? WHY?!" Roy snarled. "Today was supposed to be the day, step one in becoming full-fledged members of the league."
Glaring at Bruce, Nathan snapped, "No! Speed is right! This isn't joining the Justice League so this isn't what we're here for." Batman glared back but Speedy nodded appreciatively.
"Well, sure, but I thought step one was a tour of the HQ." Wally said, his tone asking for an explanation.
"Except the hall isn't the League's real HQ!" Speedy yelled at the speedster. "I bet they never told you it's just a false front for tourists and a pit stop for catching ZETA BEAM TELEPORTER tubes to the real thing, an orbiting satellite called the Watchtower."
Vanga sent Batman a heart broken look which was caught in the sight of Flash who looked at Batman in confusion.
Batman gave Green Arrow a Bat-glare and he cracked. "I know, I know, but I thought maybe we could make an exception." The Bat-glare intensified. "Or not."
"You're not helping your cause here, son." Aquaman started stepping towards Speedy. "Stand down or–"
"Or what?" Speedy cut him off, "You'll send me to my room? And I'm not your son!" He gave Oliver a hard look. "I'm not even his. I thought I was his partner, but not anymore."Speedy grabbed his hat and threw it at Green Arrow's feet, as he made his way to the exit he glanced at Nathan, nodding to him.
Looking at the other three heroes he scoffed, "I guess they're right about you three. You're not ready."
"Speedy is right." Nathan hissed boldly. "This is some grade-A bullshit. Come find me when you want me on an actual team, not a babysitter for a bunch of kids in spandex in an over zealous glass box." He turned to Bruce. "And don't you dare talk to me again, you're meant to be my brother, you've failed before and I've forgiven you but I'm done being your family until you start treating me like one."
As Nate left he knew he had no intention of actually leaving so he went to the place he knew he could get his mind off things, the gym. Ignoring the blaring alarm in his ears he continued his march.
Author's Note:
The 'grey mask' is the same style as spiderman's mask, I thought it was in between enough of Robin's domino mask and Batman's cowl but covering his entire face this time.
I'm not sure if this is how you're meant to pronounce Vanga but I'm pronouncing it, Van-Gar, idk, probably wrong but whatever my oc my rules.
