"12 David we have reports of a distraught male approximately 26 years old wearing a dark blue hoodie and matching jeans. He's considered armed and dangerous at Saint Victor's hospital on the 4th floor. Three hostages are being held by said subject at gunpoint. Several units arriving on scene and ESU is on the way."
Eddie reached for her radio at her left shoulder and responded.
"Central, show 12 David responding."
Amanda's eyes widened as she looked at Eddie.
"I'm sure it's not Jamie. It couldn't be, could it?"
Eddie felt herself gripping the steering wheel tighter and sped up. She felt her breath hitch for a moment but then she reigned her anxiety in and blew the breath out, concentrating on the road in front of her. By the time her and Amanda got to the hospital, she was a ball of nerves. She was getting conflicting reports about who was inside one of the rooms. She found the nearest supervisor.
"Sir, can you give me any information about who one of the hostages is in that room?"
The supervisor was a Captain Gregerson from the 22. He tugged at his collar on his starched white uniform shirt.
"We cannot confirm who is in the room being held hostage. Just that its a doctor and two nurses. Make those four hostages. There is a pregnant woman in preterm labor with them."
Eddie felt the pit in her stomach grow. She didn't like where all this was going. She stayed put behind the barricade and tried again to get more information.
"Are any of them injured?"
Captain Gregerson looked at Eddie seriously and shook his head.
"We haven't gotten anything concrete yet. We've been calling Mr. Paulson but he isn't answering the phone. Apparently, his wife gave birth to a baby girl several days ago and she passed away unexpectedly. We're hoping he'll answer the phone and tell us who's inside."
Swallowing, Eddie willed herself not to wring her hands in abject worry. Taking a deep breath, she strained to hear the faint ringing of a phone off in the distance. Retrieving her phone from her pants pocket, she pulled up her text messages and typed in Jamie's name, sending him what she hoped would bring good news.
E- Jamie I just heard about what's going on at the hospital. I'm here. Are you ok?
Eddie waited impatiently for a notification alerting her that Jamie had indeed gotten her text and replied back. Staring at her phone, she wished she could will Jamie's text into existence. But to not avail. Giving out a somewhat frustrated sigh, she suddenly heard the distant ringing of a phone stop.
Jamie was blocking Lara from Gregory Paulson's view. He had picked up the phone on the wall by the door and was speaking to someone on the other end. Jamie felt his phone buzz in his pocket. He hoped Mr. Paulson couldn't hear it. Turning towards Lara he pulled out his phone, mouthing a few words.
'Help is coming.'
Lara nodded her head and kept breathing. She hoped this man that came into the room would just leave them be. Her eyes widened as she looked over at the monitors she was attached to. She blew out a breath and looked Jamie in the eye.
"Doctor Reagan? Is the machine supposed to be doing that?"
He was about to move when he heard Mr. Paulson yell at someone on the phone next to the door.
"Get someone to tell me where my daughter is! NOW!"
Wincing, Jamie stayed still and kept his eyes locked on Lara. Her eyes were still locked on the machine monitoring her baby. He could tell she was becoming uncomfortable.
"Do you need something for the pain Lara?"
Lara was having trouble catching her breath. Jamie tried reaching for the oxygen mask behind the bed. Mr. Paulson pointed his gun at the back of Jamie's head.
"Don't move Doctor Reagan!"
Jamie for a moment felt a sliver of hope swell inside him as he realized that Mr. Paulson was still on the phone, probably with someone from the Hostage Negotiating Team. Jamie wasn't going to let Lara struggle to breathe, so he grabbed for the oxygen mask from behind the bed. He suddenly felt some sharp stabbing in his side. A startled expression crossed his face as he looked down and then over at the hand that had just plunged a scalpel into his left side. He could barely register Mr. Paulson's words.
"I told you not to move. Now look what you made me do? Why'd you have to do that?"
Jamie barely felt himself falling. He could hear Lara's cries. The cold floor came up to meet him. His eyes wandered to the scalpel in his side. He knew he couldn't just take it out. Not without knowing the extent of the damage.
"Move in! Let's go! Let's go! Let's go!"
Eddie tried to step forward towards the room, but Captain Gregerson shook his head no.
"It's best if you stay out here Janko."
Eddie felt her stomach churn. It was starting to betray her, but she kept the bile from rising. She needed to know if it was Jamie in that room or not. Captain Gregerson and Eddie heard a member of SWAT call out to them.
"Sir! We have one down in here! It's Doctor Reagan! We need a medic! He's injured pretty badly."
Eddie felt her heart begin to quicken with both fear and anxiety. She had to get to Jamie. She tried to hide the tears that were threatening to come down her face. Swallowing, she took a breath. She hoped this would help calm her. She didn't know how badly Jamie was hurt. Gregory Paulson was led out in handcuffs. Eddie only had eyes for Jamie and what his condition was right now. Swallowing again, she watched as a few other doctors and nurses wheeled Jamie out of the room he'd been held captive in. She was immediately by his side.
"I'm right here babe. Stay with me. Please!"
Jamie was rushed into surgery while Eddie sunk down into a chair in the waiting area. It wasn't long until the rest of the family showed up. It was pop that pulled Eddie into a hug.
"Oh Eddie, sweet girl, Jamie is going to be just fine. What's the latest?"
Eddie shook her head and the dam of tears broke and they began cascading down her face.
"I don't know! It's been over two hours! I wish I could just be back there with him!"
Pop held onto Eddie and then let her go.
"You will be with him soon. Let me see if I can get an update for you. Have a seat."
Eddie nodded and then looked to Danny and Linda.
"Where's Cora?"
Linda smiled and pulled Eddie into a hug.
"She's with Nicky. I can have her bring Cora with her when you visit Jamie in a while."
Eddie entered the room with Cora only to see Jamie fast asleep. She knew that he needed his rest. But she wanted to make sure he was alright. Her and Cora would help him heal. She rocked her a bit and sat down in a rocking chair that a nurse had brought in.
"Are you hungry?"
Cora spit out her pacifier and gave a small cry of discontent. Sighing, Eddie indulged Cora and got herself situated.
"See? Mommy knows what you want. I'm eventually going to have to wean you baby girl."
Cora cooed and enjoyed her meal and looked up at her mother. Eddie brushed her lips against Cora's forehead. She heard Jamie take in a breath and then speak up in a low scratchy voice.
"Hey… There's my girls…"
Eddie straightened herself out as soon as she saw Cora was asleep. She put a finger to his lips and shook her head.
"Shh. You need you rest babe. I'm so happy you're ok. We both are."
