Yu-Gi-Oh/RWBY Season 2 Chapter 11
Team 5ds vs Team Ace
Years ago…
"Face it, you shrimps." Harriet started as her fellow classmates held Weiss and Whitley down. "Your pedestal will come crashing down one day, and I'll be watching, laughing the whole time." She gave one last punch to Weiss's guts before her and her posse let the two go and walked off, laughing. "Are you okay?" Whitley asked, helping Weiss up. "I'm fine!" Weiss snapped, before remembering herself. "I'm fine. Let's just go."
...
"We're facing off against Team Ace?" Ruby asked excitedly. "Correct." Pyrrha answered. "Unfortunately, their turbo duelists are trained to duel using a variety of different interchangeable decks, and those decks tend to be changed from match to match, so there isn't much we can do to prepare." Weiss, after discussing it with Whitley, stood up and addressed the team. "Whitley and I would like to request that we duel against Team Ace."
Everyone stopped to look at them. "Why is that?" Blake asked. Weiss scratched her head, trying to avoid Blake's gaze. "Well, we're familiar with Atlas Academy's tactics, so we could provide an advantage." Blake shook her head. "That's not what I asked. Why do you two want to duel Team Ace?" Weiss squirmed, uncomfortable with the question. Whitley, seeing this, stood up. "We were once in Atlas Academy, but the experience wasn't a pleasant one, to say the least. Our father, Jacques Schnee, is the owner of the academy, so we were seen as being treated special. The other students, well…"
Blake looked over to Ruby and Yang, then nodded to the twins. "Fine. You'll replace me and Yang. Better make sure you can keep up tomorrow, though." Weiss and Whitley smiled and nodded. "We won't let you down." Whitley promised. Ruby hoped so. She was hoping to see if their training was paying off.
...
"EVERYBODY LISTEN! IT'S THE SECOND MATCH OF THE WORLD RACING GRAND PRIX! OUR NEXT BOUT IS TEAM 5DS, WHO JUST MANAGED TO BEAT THE UNBEATABLE ZUSHIN THE SLEEPING GIANT! VERSUS ATLAS ACADEMY'S TEAM ACE, THE UNDEFEATED CHAMPIONS!"
As Weiss saw who was coming up to meet her on the starting line, only one sentence rang through her head. You've gotta be kidding me. Harriet Bree noticed her as well, and smiled. "Weiss Schnee. Almost didn't recognize you without your high horse. Still using your dad's money? Or hiding behind your big sister?" Weiss glared. "Just you wait and see."
"WEISS SCHNEE AND HARRIET BREE ARE AT THE STARTING LINE! LET'S GET THIS DUEL UNDER WAY!"
The two revved the engines of their duel runners, eyeing each other the whole time.
"RIDING DUEL, ACCELERATION!"
They both speed off, with neither giving any ground. Harriet was surprised to see that Weiss was actually holding her own, a surprise Weiss took advantage of to get the lead. "I draw! I summon White Glass Crystal!" A large crystalline structure appears. (Level 4/0) "Then, since I control a White Glass tuner monster, I can special summon White Glass Radiance!" A fairy made of light bursts out of White Glass Crystal in an explosion of light. (Level 3/1100) "I now tune my level 3 White Glass Radiance with my level 4 White Glass Crystal! Your perfect scales capture the light of hope. Now, descend and defend us all! Synchro summon! Appear, White Glass Dragon!" (Level 7/0)
"WEISS HAS MANAGED TO BRING OUT HER DRAGON ON THE VERY FIRST TURN! THIS GIVES HER A STRONG FIELD ADVANTAGE EARLY ON!"
"When White Glass Crystal is synchro summoned, it becomes a continuous spell on my field." The crystal appears behind White Glass Dragon. "Now, at the end of each of my turns, you'll take damage equal to the combined level of all of my White Glass synchro monsters. I end my turn." As she does, a white energy beam fires from the crystal, hitting Harriet. (Harriet 4000-3300)
"WEISS HAS ALREADY DRAWN FIRST BLOOD! HOW WILL HARRIET REACT?"
Harriet growls in frustration. "You think you're something, huh? Well, you're not! I draw!" (Harriet 0-1, Weiss 0-1) "First I activate the speed spell Angel Baton to draw two cards and discard 1 card. I then summon Steam Bomb!" A bomb that appears to be powered by steam appears. (Level 3/1200) "Harriet, what are you doing? Calm down." Clover, her teacher, ordered into her headpiece, but she ignored. "Steam Bomb, attack White Glass Dragon!" Got you know, princess. If you use your dragon's effect to stop the bomb's attack, I'm free to use the other card in my hand to take control of it.
Weiss simply smirked and let the attack land, causing an explosion (Weiss 4000-2800). Once the smoke cleared, Harriet was surprised to see White Glass Dragon still standing. "If a White Glass synchro monster I control would be destroyed, I can destroy White Glass Crystal instead." Weiss explained. "I know your every move, Harriet Bree. Every strategy, every combo, ever since I had the displeasure of meeting you."
"Shut up!" Harriet objects. "You don't know me at all! When Steam Bomb battles, it's destroyed afterwards." The bomb detonates, though Weiss is unscathed. "Then, since my Water or Fire monster was destroyed, I can special summon Steam Camel from my hand!" A mechanical camel with steam shooting out of its stumps appears. (Level 3/1500) "Steam Camel will then deal damage equal to Steam Bomb's level times 200!" The camel fires a blast of steam from its mouth towards Weiss. (Weiss 2800-2200) "I then activate the effect of my Steam Lurker in my graveyard. If I control a Water or Fire monster, I can special summon it from my graveyard, but it will be banished when it leaves the field." A mechanical sea creature spawns from Harriet's graveyard. (Level 3/0)
"I now tune my level 3 Steam Camel with my level 3 Steam Lurker! Appear, Steam Sniper, in defense mode!" A man covered in steampunk armor, carrying a large rifle appears. (Level 6/2700) "Once per turn, I can choose either Water or Fire and deal 500 damage to you for every monster of that attribute in my graveyard. I choose Fire!" Images of Steam Camel and Steam Bomb appear before turning into energy bullets that are loaded into the sniper's gun before being fired at Weiss. (Weiss 2200-1200) "I activate my face-down, White Glass Resonance! When I take damage, I can summon a White Glass monster from my hand or deck with attack less than or equal to the damage I just took. Appear, White Glass Rogue!" (Level 2/1000) Harriet groaned in frustration. "I set a card and end my turn."
"HARRIET HAS ALMOST WIPED OUT WEISS SCHNEE'S LIFE POINTS! WEISS HAS SOME CATCHING UP TO DO!"
"I draw!" (Harriet 1-2, Weiss 1-2) If I don't take care of that sniper, it will wipe me out in just two turns. Hopefully this plan works. "I summon White Glass Enchanter!" A wizard in white robes emerges from a stained glass window. (Level 4/1500) "White Glass Rogue can attack directly!" The rogue darts past Steam Sniper and hits Harriet. (Harriet 3300-2300) "I then activate the effect of my White Glass Enchanter. Since my White Glass monster just dealt damage, I can now lower your monster's attack or defense by the same amount!" The wizard readies a magical beam, and fires it at Steam Sniper.
"Nice try. I activate Synchro Coating!" Harriet replies. "Once per turn, I can negate a card or effect that would affect my synchro monster, and destroy your card!" Steam Sniper dodges the beam and fires his own, destroying White Glass Enchanter. Weiss is surprised, but smiles. "I set two cards and end my turn." Harriet's glare turns into a smirk. "So confident when you're about to lose. I draw!" (Harriet 2-3, Weiss 2-3) "I activate the effect of Steam Sniper again!" The sniper fires on Weiss once more. (Weiss 1200-200)
"WEISS IS IN THE RED ZONE! HOW CAN SHE STOP THIS ASSAULT?"
"I then summon Steam Cannon!" A brute carrying a large steam-powered cannon appears. (Level 4/2000) "Steam Cannon, attack her Rogue directly and end this duel!" The brute charges up the shot. Go on, Weiss. Use your dragon's effect so I can take it. Weiss smiles to herself before replying. "I activate White Glass Dragon's effect to negate the attack and gain Steam Cannon's attack. Shimmer Scale Flash!" Light appears from the dragon's wings, forming a wall that blocks the beam of energy. (White Glass Dragon 0-2000)
"Harriet, stop! She's baiting you!" Harriet ignored her teacher again. I have you now! "I activate the effect of my Steam Hunter in my hand. By discarding it while I control a Steam monster and paying 800 life points," (Harriet 2300-1500) "I can take control of your precious dragon!" A hunter appears, firing a net at White Glass Dragon. "White Glass Dragon's not going anywhere. I activate my face-down White Glass Reflection, negating your effect."
A mirror appears, absorbing the net before it reaches its target. "Then, since I control a White Glass synchro monster, I can copy that effect. I think I'll take your sniper!" The net fires out of the mirror, this time towards Harriet's monster. "Idiot. I have my Synchro Coating, remember?" The sniper fires at the net, destroying it and the mirror. "I do remember. In fact, that's what I was counting on. I activate my other face-down, White Glass Prison! Your sniper is banished while I control a White Glass monster!" A glass box appears around Steam Sniper, trapping it before flattening to reveal the sniper's reflection in the single panel. "I told you I knew your every move." Weiss taunted. "It's my turn now. I draw!" (Harriet 3-4, Weiss 3-4) "White Glass Dragon, attack directly! Mirror Breath!" The dragon fired a beam of white energy that enveloped Harriet. (Harriet 1500-0).
"AMAZING! DESPITE AN AGGRESSIVE FRONT FROM HARRIET, WEISS MAKES A SPECTACULAR COMEBACK! NOW MARROW AMIN WILL JOIN HER!"
As Harriet returns to her team's pit in frustration, she tries not to notice her teacher marching towards her. "I told you not to fall for her trap. Why didn't you listen to me?" Harriet searched for an answer, but found none. Clover took the active duelist tag from her shoulder and gave it to Marrow. "Don't you dare make the same mistake she did. If I tell you to do something, you do it. Got it?" "Yes, sir. I won't let you down, sir." Marrow nervously got out as he put the tag on and entered his duel runner, joining Weiss on the track.
"I draw!" (Marrow 4-5, Weiss 4-5) "I set a monster and a card face-down. I then activate the effect of Speed World 2, removing 4 speed counters," (Marrow 5-1) "to deal 800 damage to you for every speed spell in my hand." He shows the speed spell Star Path as his duel runner fires at Weiss. (Weiss 200-0)
"JUST AS HARRIET WAS WIPED OUT, SO HAS WEISS BEEN BEATEN! WHITLEY SCHNEE TAKES HER PLACE!"
Weiss returns to her team's pit, unsure what to think. She finally got her comeuppance on the one who tormented her and Whitley during their brief visit to Atlas Academy. So why did it feel so empty? Whitley put his hand on her shoulder. "Are you alright?" She looked up to him, unsure how to answer. After a few seconds, she smiled. "I will be." She answered as she handed him the active duelist tag.
Satisfied, Whitley put on his helmet and raced out onto the track, joining Marrow. He didn't recognize his opponent already on the track, and the neutral expression from Marrow didn't help either. Regardless he started his turn, drawing without comment. (Marrow 1-2, Whitley 5-6) "I summon White Pawn in attack mode!" (Level 1/100) "Then, since I control White Pawn, I can summon White Knight!" (Level 3/1700) "I tune my level 3 White Knight with my level 1 White Pawn! O little foot soldier, grant your power to the noble knight and advance against all opponents! Synchro Summon! Appear, White Knight's Advance!" (Level 4/1900)
"I'm not done yet. I use Advance's special ability to summon another chess piece from my hand. I summon White Rook in defense mode!" A porcelain structure appears. (Level 4/2000) "White Knight's Advance, attack his face-down monster!" Whitley expected from such a defensive formation that Marrow would use his face-down to protect his monster. So when the attack landed without issue, that made him even more suspicious. "When you destroy Dust Worm, I can add a Wind monster to my hand." Marrow explains.
Ah, Weiss thought. He wanted me to destroy his monster so he could find the right card. "I set a card face-down and end my turn." Marrow also silently drew. (Marrow 2-3, Whitley 6-7) "I summon Dust Digger." A zombie wrapped in dusty clothes, carrying a shovel appeared. (Level 1/0) "When Dust Digger is normal summoned, it can bring back an Earth or Wind monster from my graveyard, but that monster will be banished when it next leaves the field." The zombie digs at the ground, revealing Dust Worm, a worm covered in sand. (Level 4/0) "I now tune my level 4 Dust Worm with my level 1 Dust Digger to summon Dust Sprite!" A fairy caked in dust appears. (Level 5/0)
"As I thought," Pyrrha began in the pit. "They seem to be following a theme. Harriet's Steam deck used a combination of Fire and Water monsters, meant to inflict burn damage. This one seems to be Earth and Wind, but how that will be applied remains to be seen." Ruby looked over to Weiss. "What do you think, Weiss?" Weiss snapped out of her thoughts to look over at the others. "Atlas Academy almost never does anything without a purpose. They never put even a single card into a deck without careful consideration of some grand strategy for the entire team. As to what that strategy is, well, like Pyrrha said, we'll have to see."
Back on the track, Marrow continued the duel. "I then activate the effect of the Dust Spider in my hand, banishing the Wind-Attribute Dust Digger from my graveyard to summon it." A large brown spider erupts from the ground. (Level 4/2000) "I can now activate my face-down, Dust Storm." A large wind blew towards Whitley, who had to shield his eyes from the dust blowing towards him. "Once per turn, if I control at least one Wind and Earth monster, you have to send that many cards from the top of your deck to the graveyard." Whitley begrudgingly sends those cards to the graveyard. All the while, something was bothering him, but he couldn't say what. "I end my turn."
Weiss drew his card, wondering what Marrow was up to. (Marrow 3-4, Whitley 7-8) "I summon another White Pawn!" (Level 1/100) "I tune my level 4 White Rook with my Level 1 White Pawn! O little foot soldier, grant your power to the stalwart fortress and stop all foes. I synchro summon White Rook's Castle!" A larger version of the castle appears. (Level 5/2200) "White Rook's Castle can attack while in defense position, using its defense instead of its attack."
"Now, use Dust Spider!" Clover ordered Marrow. "I activate the effect of Dust Spider, discarding an Earth or Wind monster to flip your monster face-down!" The spider leaps up and fires webbing all over the castle, before turning it face-down. "Then, since I have 2 or more speed counters I activate my speed spell Speed Energy, giving White Knight's Advance 200 attack for every speed counter I have this turn!" (White Knight's Advance 1900-3700) "White Knight's Advance, squash that spider!" The knight lunges forward, attempting to skewer its target, but Dust Sprite intervenes.
"Dust Sprite can redirect any attack to itself." Marrow explains. "And if it would be destroyed, I can banish a Wind or Earth monster from my graveyard instead." A shield of dust forms around Dust Sprite, blocking Advance's attack. Whitley sighs, but accepts that there is nothing he can do for now. "I end my turn." (White Knight's Advance 3700-1900)
"I draw." (Marrow 4-5, Whitley 8-9) "Since I have 2 or more speed counters, I activate the Speed Spell Star Path, letting me summon a banished level 2 or lower monster, but re-banishing it during the end phase. I summon Dust Digger!" (Level 1/0) "I then summon Dust Mouse!" A small mouse covered in dust appears. (Level 1/300) "When Dust Mouse is summoned, if I control a Wind monster, I summon a Dust token." The mouse shapes and molds a small dirt copy of itself. (Level 1/300) "I now use the effect of Dust Storm. Since I now have 5 Earth and Wind monsters, you must lose 5 cards." Whitley sends the cards away, regretting that he never got to use them, but now certain that his suspicions were confirmed. Back in the garage, Ruby was having the same revelation.
"That's it!" Ruby exclaimed. "I think I see the reasoning behind the two decks. They were made for Yang and Blake!" "Really?" Yang wondered, but as she thought about it, it made a little more sense. "Harriet's Steam deck was meant to get around your strong defensive options by dealing effect damage," Ruby explained. "and Marrow's Dust deck seems to be more defensive, so as to keep Blake from using any of her tricks." "But that means," Blake remarks, "that whoever they have as their third will be equipped with a deck that can counter you." Ruby nodded in agreement, wondering how she would work around that.
"I set a card and end my turn. As I do, Dust Digger is re-banished." The zombie disappears in a puff of stars. Whitley draws, all the while figuring out how he'll deal with a deck designed to stop their team's trickster. (Marrow 5-6, Whitley 9-10) "I activate the effect of Speed World 2, removing 10 speed counters," (Whitley 10-0) "to destroy 1 card on the field. I'll destroy your Dust Spider!" A shot fires from Whitley's duel runner, blasting the spider to pieces. "I now flip face-up my White Rook's Castle!" The castle reemerges, the webbing pulling off. "Castle, attack her Dust Sprite! Towering Crush!" The castle hovers up and starts to descend onto the sprite.
"I activate Dust Sprite's effect, banishing Dust Spider instead." The sprite forms another shield, blocking off the tower. "Advance, finish the job!" Whitley replied as the knight struck true, now that Marrow's graveyard was empty. "I then activate my face-down, Defense Break! Since my chess piece just destroyed your defense position monster, it can attack all other defense position monsters you control and inflict piercing damage when it does!"
Desperate times, Marrow thought. "I activate my face-down Sandstorm Catastrophe! Since a monster I control was just destroyed, all monsters we control are destroyed and we take damage equal to their combined levels times 400!" Whitley has no time to react as his knight, castle, and Weiss's dragon are pulled into a sandstorm with Marrow's mouse and its copy. Once they are all pulled in, a powerful blast of sand is released, wiping both players out. (Marrow 4000-0) (Whitley 4000-0) As White Glass Dragon is destroyed, the White Glass Prison is reset, freeing Steam Sniper.
"DOUBLE KNOCKOUT! AS WHITLEY FINALLY BROKE THROUGH MARROW'S DEFENSES, MARROW COUNTERS WITH A DEVASTATING TIE! IT WILL NOW BE UP TO TEAM 5D'S RUBY ROSE AND TEAM ACE'S …. I'VE JUST BEEN TOLD THAT CLOVER EBI WILL BE REPLACING THE THIRD MEMBER OF TEAM ACE!"
Whitley races back into the dueling pit and quickly hands his active duelist tag to Ruby. "Apologies. I could only manage a draw, and they have Steam Sniper back." Ruby takes the tag and places it on. "Don't worry. I'll think of something." She then races towards the track, meeting her opponent. As she views her opening hand, Ruby giggles to herself, hoping Clover takes the bait.
"I draw!" Clover announces. (Clover 6-7, Ruby 0-1) "I activate my quick-play speed spell Cut Off, removing 3 speed counters," (Clover 7-4) "To destroy one set card you control and prevent you from activating anything in response." Ruby's face-down White Glass Prison is destroyed. "Now I can use Steam Sniper's effect freely. I choose Fire for its effect." The sniper fires a shot at Ruby, who takes the damage in stride. (Ruby 4000-3000) Clover is surprised to see that Ruby doesn't seem worried at all, but continues his turn. "I then normal summon Chaos Witch!" A white-haired witch followed by skulls flies in. (Level 4/1500) As I thought, Ruby predicted. This deck is Light and Dark themed.
"I then activate Chaos Witch's effect, tributing it to summon two Dark Beast tokens." The witch lights a candle and disappears in a dark-purple flame, showing only the two skulls. (Level 2/1000) "I then activate the effect of the Chaos Valkyria in my hand, banishing Chaos Witch to summon itself." A fairy with dark wings appears. (Level 4/1800) "Now, my Dark Beast tokens attack you directly." The two skulls take their attacks at Ruby. (Ruby 3000-2000-1000)
"CLOVER IS ATTEMPTING TO TAKE RUBY OUT RIGHT HERE AND NOW BEFORE SHE GETS A CHANCE TO GO ON THE COUNTEROFFENSIVE! IS THIS THE END FOR HER?"
Clover was again unsettled by Ruby's unflinching smile despite her low life points, but decided to ignore it. "Chaos Valkyria, attack Ruby directly." The Fairy flies upward, its wings bathing in dark energy, before flying right towards Ruby. "I activate the effect of my Pain Adapter!" Ruby breaks her silence, as a monster with numerous cables in its body appears. "If I would take damage, I can negate the damage and special summon Pain Adapter to my side of the field." (Level 2/400) "Then, you take damage equal to the amount of damage I've taken this turn!" The cables on Pain Adapter glow as the monster fires a blast from its hand towards Clover. "But I also activate the effect of my Energy Augmenter in my hand. When you're about to take damage, I can discard it to double that damage." A small cybernetic fairy appears around the beam, causing it to double in size just before it connects. (Clover 4000-0)
"SPECTACULAR! CLOVER ATTEMPTED TO WIPE RUBY OUT BEFORE SHE EVEN HAD A CHANCE, BUT SHE MANAGED TO TURN THE TABLES WITH HIS OWN DAMAGE! TEAM 5D'S WINS!"
...
Placido paced in the space below the thrones where his counterparts sat. "Why do we suffer this pathetic show? The longer we wait, the stronger she becomes. I say we attack now and take the signer dragons from their cold, dead hands!" Jose peered down with an emotionless glare. "We have been given our plan. We will not sway from it." "Oh, yes. This great plan from who knows where, given by who knows what. I'm not going to sit around on the orders of some phantom that may or may not exist any longer." Placido then left, knowing that Jose wouldn't stop him. It was time to end this charade.
