Deadly Mirror
"WHERE IS SHE?" Neo hardly had time to wonder why Yang yelled that before she burst into the director's office, with several guards behind her. "I'm sorry, Ma'am. She-" "It's alright, just go." Neo didn't want to face Yang alone, but she knew better than to try and stop the woman. Yang slammed her hand on the desk. "Is it true?" "I-Is what true? I'm afraid you'll have to be more specific, Miss Xiao Long-Whoa!" Yang grabbed Neo by her shirt and pulled her in close. "Nora Valkyrie. Seven years ago. Did you and Cinder bribe her to lose against me?" Neo gulped. "Yes. Cinder wanted you to be the Queen of Duels as part of her plan, so she pulled a few strings here and there." Neo expected Yang to deliver a good walloping, but instead Yang simply let her go and left. As she did, a notification appeared on Neo's computer. After reading it, Neo, for what was now the second time that morning, wondered how her life got to be this way.

Ruby found Yang in her room, watching tapes of her old matches back when she was the Queen of Duels. Judging by Yang's expression, Ruby could tell her little trip to Neo didn't go well. "Hey." Yang didn't respond. "So that match was fixed. It's not the end of the world!" "Don't you get it, Ruby? If Cinder was willing to fix that match, there's no way she didn't fix other duels as well. Have I ever won on my own merit or was it just handed to me?" Ruby sat on the couch with her. "That's not true. You fought against the Dark Signers and won. You obtained the power of Burning Soul all on your own. You are one of the strongest duelists I've ever known. Besides," Ruby leans in and hugs Yang. "You're also the strongest big sister I have." Yang ruffles Ruby's hair. "I'm the only big sister you've ever had." The two laugh for a bit. "Thanks, Ruby. Maybe it's time I let go of the past." Yang turns off the TV and they both leave.

"In order to continue the WRGP in a timely manner, the tournament will no longer be held in the Colosseum. Instead, the duels will commence on the Daedalus Bridge, to honor the union between Satellite and Neo Domino City. The next match, Team 5Ds vs Team Break, will start at 9 AM tomorrow."
"They can't be serious." Blake commented. "I'm afraid they are." Pyrrha answered. "They're already getting Security to handle the bridge. It'll be done by morning. But that's not our problem. Guess who's the leader of Team Break." She shows her tablet with the relevant information, and a face Ruby wished she would never see again. "Roman."

"ARE YOU READY? AFTER AN UNFORTUNATE DELAY, THE WRGP IS BACK ON TRACK! AND WHAT BETTER WAY TO START IT OFF THEN WITH OUR VERY OWN TEAM 5DS! THEY WILL BE FACING OFF AGAINST THE NEWLY FORMED TEAM BREAK!"
Team 5Ds readied themselves in the new pit, which unfortunately was stationed right across from Team Break's pit. Ruby glared over, wondering just how the 3 Pure Nobles got Roman out of prison. She recognized Mercury next to him, getting ready as the first duelist, but the third she didn't recognize. They wore a black hood and a mask that seemed to stare right into her soul.
"Well. At least we don't have to worry about our first opponent." Yang interjected. "I've beaten Mercury twice already. Time for a hat trick." She said that and yet she wondered if Mercury was another pawn in Cinder's scheme, and things would be much harder this time.
"YANG XIAO LONG AND MERCURY BLACK! THESE TWO HAVE FACED OFF TWICE IN THE PAST, AND BOTH TIMES YANG HAS COME OUT THE VICTOR! WILL MERCURY FINALLY GET HIS REVENGE, OR WILL YANG RETAIN HER WINNING STREAK?"
Don't remind me, Mercury thought. And worse yet, Roman's big plan is gonna make me lose again! I should have asked for more money.
"RIDING DUEL, ACCELERATION!"
The two were off, and Mercury managed to get the first turn. "I draw!" He looked at what he drew, and sure enough, he got exactly the card Roman said he would. Just great. Roman learns some perfect way to cheat out any card you want, and we're only using it to tie with Xiao Long! Though, the way he said it, maybe it only works this way? Oh, who cares. "I summon Future Mailer!" A robotic mailman appears. (Level 4/1200) Wait, that's a psychic type! Yang realized. What's Roman's plan?
"I then activate its effect. By tributing Future Mailer and paying 1000 life points," (Mercury 4000-3000) "I can banish 1 card from my deck. Then, in two turns, that card will be added to my hand." The mail-robot takes a card out of Mercury's deck and places it into a mailbox, which disappears. "I set 3 cards and end my turn." Yang, with only the slightest hesitation, draws. (Mercury 0-1, Yang 0-1) "Now I activate my two face-down Gift Cards!" Mercury interjects. "Both increase your life points by 3000 each!" Yang is stumped by this move, and yet two presents appear before her and shower her in light. (Yang 4000-7000-10000). "Now I can activate my Self-Destruct Button! Since you have at least 7000 more life points than me, both of our life points become 0!" Before Yang can react, a massive explosion blasts both of them away. (Mercury 3000-0, Yang 10000-0)
"WHAT AN UPSET! MERCURY HAS TAKEN YANG DOWN WITH HIM IN A DRAW! NOW IT WILL BE BLAKE BELLADONNA AND ROMAN TORCHWICK!"
As the two turbo duelists returned to the pits, Yang let loose an impressive string of curses and swears. Mercury had to be assured numerous times that no, Yang was not allowed into the other team's pit. After a few minutes, Yang finally calmed down and handed her active duelist tag to Blake. "What can I expect from Roman?" Ruby had to think about that one. "Well, normally he wins by playing fast and loose with his life points, paying as many as he needs to make his opponent lose more." "Normally?" "Considering the stunt Mercury just pulled, I'm almost certain he has some tricks up his sleeve." "I'll take care of it."
Blake and Roman both race out onto the streets simultaneously. "Ready for me to beat you again, Roman?" "It'll be different this time, Belladonna. I draw!" (Roman 1-2, Blake 1-2) "I summon Krebons!" (Level 2/1200) "I set two cards and end my turn." A defensive play, huh? Ruby was right, he's up to something. "I draw!" (Roman 2-3, Blake 2-3) "I summon Sharp Claw!" (Level 4/1700) "Sharp Claw, attack Krebons!" The feline monster darts toward the jester, but Krebons brings up a wall of holographic blocks to intercept. "I pay 800 life points to negate the attack." Roman replies. (Roman 4000-3200) "Since my monster's attack was negated, I can summon Frustration Oni from my hand!" (Level 5/2000) "Frustration Oni, attack Krebons!" The oni attacks Krebons, who again blocks the attack. (Roman 3200-2400) "I set a card and end my turn."
Roman smiles at this. "This lets me activate my face-down Psychic Strain! During the end phase, if I've paid live points for the effect of my psychic monster, you take that much damage!" A bolt fires at Blake which almost knocks her off her duel runner. (Blake 4000-2400) Right, psychic duelist. I almost forgot, the way Ruby holds back during training.
"THE TWO DUELISTS ARE NECK AND NECK, NEITHER GIVING AN INCH!"
"I draw!" (Roman 3-4, Blake 3-4) "During my standby phase, I must tribute a psychic monster or lose Psychic Strain. I choose not to." The card explodes in a burst of psychic power. "Next, since two turns have passed, the card from Future Mailer is added to my hand." A mailbox appears, and Roman takes the card out of the mailbox. "I'll show you just what I obtained. I summon Pain Mirror!" A mirror with a tortured expression appears. (Level 1/0) "I set a card end my turn."
"I draw!" (Roman 4-5, Blake 4-5) "The effect of Pain Mirror activates, dealing 1000 damage to the both of us each standby phase!" Two bolts of lightning fire from the mirror, hitting both Roman and Blake. (Roman 2400-1400) (Blake 2400-1400) That's his plan. He's trying to take us both out like Mercury took Yang out. But why? Why is it so important that Ruby face that third duelist without my interference? Who are they?
"I summon Fear Shield!" (Level 3/2000) "I tune my level 5 Frustration Oni with my level 3 Fear Shield! Shadows Dance upon the midnight plain. Rise and command them to victory! Synchro Summon! Appear, Gambol Shroud Dragon!" (Level 8/2500) There. Now, even if I lose, Ruby will have Gambol Shroud to help her out.
"Sharp Claw, attack Krebons!" The jester once again blocks the attack. (Roman 1400-600) "I activate my face-down, Psychic Rejuvenation, rejuvenating my life points by 1000 for every psychic I control." Both of Roman's monsters are surrounded in a green glow. (Roman 600-2600) "I activate my face-down Asleep at the switch! Since you just gained life points, one of your monsters is destroyed. I choose your Krebons." The glow around Krebons intensifies, until Krebons is vaporized. "Now Sharp Claw can attack your Pain Mirror." Sharp Claw attacks the mirror, but it remains unshattered.
"Too bad. Pain Mirror can't be destroyed by battle while in attack mode, and neither player takes any battle damage." Blake cursed as now she was in a bad spot. Nevertheless, she had one last trick. "I activate the effect of Speed World 2, removing 4 speed counters," (Blake 5-1) "to deal 800 damage for every speed spell in my hand." She reveals one speed spell, angel baton. (Roman 2600-1800) "I set a card and end my turn."
"I draw!" (Roman 5-6, Blake 1-2) "Of course, Pain Mirror's effect now activates." (Roman 1800-800) (Blake 1400-400) "To finish it off, I summon Limit Samsara!" A psychic maiden carrying flowers appears. (Level 3/1500) "Once per turn, if I have taken damage this turn, I can double Limit Samsara's level." (Limit Samsara Level 3-6) "Now, I tune my level 6 Limit Samsara with my level 1 Pain Mirror! Pushing one's senses to their limits unleashes unspeakable power! Show them all my vision! Synchro summon! Appear, Pain Master!" A large man with several needles in his body and a mirror covering his face appears. (Level 7/0)
Blake reveals a satisfied grin. "I activate my face-down Synchro Snare! When you synchro summon a monster, not only do I gain life points equal to your monster's level times 400," (Blake 400-3200) "but your monster must now attack this turn if able." That's enough of your defensive play, Roman. Whatever your new monster can do, it won't protect you anymore.
Roman shares her smirk. "Very well. Pain Master, attack Gambol Shroud Dragon!" The needles on Pain Master's body generate purple lightning. "While Pain Master is in attack mode, it can't be destroyed by battle, and both players will share the battle damage." Blake realizes her mistake. "And if Pain Mirror is in my graveyard, that battle damage will be doubled! Sensation Evolution!" Pain Master fires the lightning at Gambol Shroud Dragon, causing both Roman and Blake to writhe in pain. (Roman 1800-0) (Blake 3200-0)
"ANOTHER DOUBLE KNOCKOUT! ROMAN HAS COPIED MERCURY'S STRATEGY AND WIPED BOTH HIMSELF AND BLAKE OUT! NOW IT'S UP TO RUBY ROSE AND UH… who is their third again?"
As Roman and Blake return to their team's pits, a member of the staff appears and asks the cloaked figure their name. Roman nods to the figure who takes off their mask and cloak. "I am Iron Thorn."
"RUBY ROSE WILL BE FACING IRON THORN! HEY, I THINK WE HAVE A FAN OF RUBY, SHE'S PRACTICALLY THE SPITTING IMAGE OF YOU!"
The announcer's description wasn't completely inaccurate. Iron Thorn did indeed have the same face as Ruby Rose, but her outfit was a palette swap of Ruby's. Instead of red followed by black, it was black followed by red. Ruby herself wasn't sure how to react to her. As the two followed suit, Ruby asked "Are you related to the Black Rose by any chance?"
Iron Thorn looked over with a blank expression. "Yes. She was my prototype, created to evaluate just how strong you are." "And your purpose?" "To kill you." "Fun. I draw!" (Iron Thorn 6-7, Ruby 2-3) I need to get rid of that Pain Master or else this duel will be over very soon. "I send a plant from my hand to the graveyard to summon Rose Synchron in defense mode!" (Level 2/1600) "I then summon Violet Witch!" (Level 4/1100) "I tune my level 4 Violet Witch with my level 2 Rose Synchron! Be the wall that grows over and over to save all that is green and good! Synchro Summon! Appear, Thorn Gardna!" (Level 6/2600)
Large vines appear, holding Pain Master down. "Now while I control Thorn Gardna, Pain Master can't attack. I set a card and end my turn." If she's anything like Black Rose, I already know what she'll bring out next. But the way this match has been going, who knows? Iron Thorn draws wordlessly. (Iron Thorn 7-8, Ruby 3-4) "Since I have 3 or more speed counters, I can activate the speed spell Parasite Seed, reducing the level of Pain Master by one to summon a level one plant from my hand. I summon Anger Seed." A small star flies out of Pain Master to form a small seed. (Pain Master Level 7-6) (Anger Seed Level 1/0)
"I set a card before tuning my level 6 Pain Master with my level 1 Anger Seed. Chilling flames engulf the entire world. Pitch-dark flower, set into bloom! Synchro Summon! Appear now, Black Rose Dragon!" (Level 7/2400) Ruby's signer mark flared, reacting to the familiar dragon. Black Rose. It represents everything wrong with me. "I activate the effect of Black Rose Dragon, destroying all cards on the field. Black Rose Gale!" The dragon lets loose a flurry of petals, wiping out all cards on both player's sides of the field, excluding Gambol Shroud, which uses Shadow Close to banish itself, and Black Rose itself. "On the turn Anger Seed was used for the synchro summon of a Fire synchro monster, that synchro monster can't be destroyed by card effects."
Ruby smiles. "I suppose you didn't notice my face-down, Seed Bomb! When it's destroyed while face-down, I can summon it as a monster." A small seed appears. (Level 4/1000) "I also had a set card destroyed; Dark Coffin. When it is destroyed, you must make a choice: either discard a random card from your hand or destroy a monster you control." Ruby thinks about the choice and ultimately decides. "I choose to destroy Seed Bomb." Guess she did notice.
"Black Rose, attack directly with Black Rose Flare." The dragon fires a red stream of energy at Ruby, pushing her back. (Ruby 4000-1600) "I activate the effect of Speed World 2, removing 7 speed counters," (Iron Thorn 8-1) "to draw a card. I set a card and end my turn." As Iron Thorn ends her turn, Gambol Shroud returns. "I draw!" (Iron Thorn 1-2, Ruby 3-4) This probably won't work, but… "Gambol Shroud, attack Black Rose Dragon with Mad Shadow Dance!" Gambol Shroud wraps its claws in darkness as it flies towards its target.
"I activate my face-down Negate Attack, to negate the attack and end the battle phase." Gambol Shroud stops in its tracks. Worth a shot. "I set a card and end my turn." Something's not right. Black Rose seemed wild and crazed, while Iron Thorn is more calm and lifeless. But I can still feel something from my signer mark. I don't have the full story here.
Iron Thorn again draws silently. (Iron Thorn 2-3, Ruby 4-5) "I summon Ghost Root." An ethereal cluster of roots appears. (Level 1/0) "When Ghost Root is summoned, I can summon a level 1 plant from my graveyard. I summon Anger Seed." The ghost pierces the ground and pulls up Anger Seed from the ground. "I now tune my level 1 Ghost Root with my level 1 Anger Seed. Every rose has its thorns, so become the best thorns a rose could ask for. I synchro summon the tuner monster Thorn Rose Dragon!" A small black dragon covered in thorns appears. (Level 2/200)
A tuner synchro? No way, is she… "I tune my level 7 Black Rose Dragon with my level 2 Thorn Rose Dragon! Pitch-dark flower, grow and reach new heights beyond your wildest dreams. Accel Synchro!" Iron Thorn and her duel runner both disappear in a streak of blinding speed. Ruby looks behind her and sure enough, Iron Thorn reappears with a bigger, more monstrous version of Black Rose. "Appear, Black Thorn Dragon!" (Level 9/3600)
At this point, all of the signer's marks flare, not just Ruby's. "When Black Thorn Dragon is synchro summoned, I can negate the effects of one monster you control for this turn, and you can't activate cards or effects in response. I choose Gambol Shroud!" Black Thorns entangle and entrap Gambol Shroud. "Then, since Thorn Rose Dragon was used to synchro summon of a Fire Dragon, it equips itself to that monster." A coat of thorns surrounds Black Thorn. "Black Thorn, attack Gambol Shroud with Thorn Piercing!"
Black Thorn fires several thorns from its wings that pierce through Gambol Shroud. (Ruby 1600-500) "Now, since Black Thorn destroyed your monster by battle, Thorn Rose deals damage equal to that monster's level times 200. Goodbye, Ruby Rose. Thorn Volley!" The thorns that pierced through Gambol Shroud fly towards Ruby Rose. "I activate my face-down, Energy-Absorbing Monolith! The damage is negated, and I gain life points equal to the damage I would have taken." (Ruby 500-2100)
"Then I activate the second effect of Black Thorn, which revives Gambol Shroud Dragon in attack position with its attack reduced to 0 and its effects negated so that I can attack again. Replanting Revenge!" Black Thorn fires several vines into the graveyard, pulling out Gambol Shroud Dragon. (Gambol Shroud Dragon 2500-0)
"I activate the effect of my Zombie Mulch in my graveyard. Once per duel, when a monster is summoned from either player's graveyard, I can banish that monster to summon Zombie Mulch instead." Gambol Shroud rots away, showing a zombie covered in mulch. (Level 3/800) "Since Replanting Revenge only lets me attack Gambol Shroud, I can't attack Zombie Mulch. I set a card and end my turn."
"RUBY ROSE HAS JUST BARELY SURVIVED DARK THORN'S TERRIBLE ONSLAUGHT! HOW WILL SHE RETALIATE?"
"I draw!" (Iron Thorn 3-4, Ruby 5-6) "I summon Harvest Rose!" A small green rose bearing many fruits appears. (Level 4/1300) "I then tune my level 4 Revival Rose with my level 3 Zombie Mulch. The bloom of evolution blazes forth. Grow and grow ever stronger! Synchro summon! Appear, Crescent Rose Dragon!" (Level 7/2400) "When Harvest Rose is used for a synchro summon, I gain life points equal to the level of the synchro monster summoned times 400." (Ruby 2100-4900) "Destroy her face-down card! Crescent shot!" Crescent Rose readies its tail, about to fire. "I activate my face-down, Synchro Sovereignty. While I control a level 8 or higher synchro monster, the effects of all level 7 or lower monsters you control are negated." Black Thorn roars, and Crescent Rose stops its effect.
"I am the perfect duelist, created by the 3 Pure Nobles. You can't beat me." Iron Thorn states. Ruby looks over her cards and realizes she only has one shot to victory. "Crescent Rose, attack Black Thorn Dragon! Red Rose Flare!" Iron Thorn shows a hint of surprise at this play. "I then activate the effect of my Kurithorn in my hand, boosting Crescent Rose's attack by that of Black Thorn." Kurithorn appears, crafting a weapon made of thorns for Crescent Rose. (Crescent Rose Dragon 2400-6000)
The dragon fires a salvo of energy at Black Thorn, but the monster is unaffected. (Iron Thorn 4000-1600) "If Black Thorn Dragon would be destroyed, I can destroy Thorn Rose Dragon instead." The coat of thorns shatters. "Good try, Ruby Rose. But your every move only hastens my victory." "Are you sure about that? I activate the speed spell Recycling Tune. By removing speed counters equal to their combined level, I can perform a synchro summon by banishing monsters from my graveyard with a difference in levels equal to that of the monster I want to synchro summon. I choose Zombie Mulch and Kurithorn!" (Ruby 6-2) "Jewel of my eye, soar into the unknown and provide the path of evolution! Synchro Summon! Appear, the tuner monster, Ruby Dragon!" (Level 3/1300)
Ruby closes her eyes and red lightning crackles around her duel runner. "The next branch of evolution appears! Blaze forth, my greatest power! Accel Synchro! Silver Eyes Rose Dragon!" (Level 10/3500) "Since Silver Eyes is level 10, it's unaffected by your Synchro Sovereignty. "I end my turn." Iron Thorn regards the Accel Synchro monster before her and draws without a sound. (Iron Thorn 4-5, Ruby 6-7)
"I activate my speed spell Power Fuel. By sending a card I control to the graveyard, I can gain 3 speed counters, but for the next 2 turns, I can't gain any more speed counters. I sacrifice Synchro Sovereignty." (Iron Thorn 5-8) "Now I can activate my speed spell Solemn Rewind. By removing 7 speed counters, I can return your synchro monster to the extra deck and summon its materials from the graveyard. You can't activate cards or effects in response, and during your next turn, you will be forbidden from summoning Silver Eyes." Ruby looks on helplessly as Silver Eyes fades away. Its synchro summon is performed in reverse and Crescent Rose Dragon and Ruby Dragon appear.
"Now, Black Thorn, attack Crescent Rose with Thorn Piercing." Black Thorn fires several thorns at its counterpart. Ruby yells, sharing her dragon's pain. (Ruby 4900-3700) "Now, Replanting Revenge." Crescent Rose is dragged out of the ground, skewered by thorns. "Fire again. Thorn Piercing!" Crescent Rose is destroyed just as quickly as it was revived. (Ruby 3700-100) "I end my turn."
"HOW BRUTAL! RUBY IS ONLY BARELY HANGING ON! IS THIS THE END?"
Through the pain, Ruby realizes a stupefying fact. It gives her the courage to carry on. "I draw!" (Ruby 7-8) "I activate the effect of Ruby Dragon, reviving a Fire Dragon-type synchro monster from the graveyard." Iron Thorn scoffs. "Pointless. Reviving your Crescent Rose is pointless as it isn't strong enough, and you can't summon Silver Eyes." "Who said I was bringing back Crescent Rose" Iron Thorn gasps as she realizes what Ruby means. "I summon back your Black Rose Dragon!" Ruby Dragon's shell shines a bright light, revealing Black Rose Dragon. Ruby looks at the dark version of her own dragon with a newfound clarity.
"What is the point of all of this? Black Rose can't help you either." Iron Thorn finds herself shaking, which surprises herself. She's a machine. Why does she feel fear? "I realized something, while I was taking Black Thorn's assault. Yes, I do have a legacy of destruction. I could do a lot of damage. But that's not the whole story. I activate my speed spell Synchro Exchange. By tributing a synchro monster I control, I can summon another synchro monster with a level equal to the number of speed counters I have. I summon Crescent Rose Dragon." Ruby dragon fades away as Crescent Rose revives from the graveyard, and roars in tandem with Black Rose. All the while, Ruby's signer mark glows ever stronger.
"All this time, I was denying that part of myself. My rage, my frustration. But Roman, the monster that he is, has a point. I am a force of destruction, just as much as I am a force for good. It's time I showed just what I could be with both! I fuse Crescent Rose Dragon and Black Rose Dragon!" The two dragons fly together, eventually blending and blurring. "The forces of Creation and Destruction mix together to create something even more beautiful. Contact Fusion! Appear, Black Crescent Dragon!"
The blurring stops to reveal a jet-black dragon with two radiant red wings made of flowers. (Level 7/3000) "What is that?" Iron Thorn demands. "When Black Crescent Dragon is fusion summoned, all other monsters lose attack equal to the combined attack of all monsters in my graveyard! Twin Rose Dance!" Black Crescent spins in place, releasing a flurry of petals. (Black Thorn Dragon 3600-0) "You want to know how I realized this about myself?" Ruby asks, driving up close to Iron Thorn.
"Because we're the same. I'm you, and you're me." Iron Thorn shakes her head. "You're lying. I am Iron Thorn, the perfect killing machine! I am not a-" She feels something on her right arm. Horrified, she pulls back her sleeve to reveal the mark of the dragon's head. "Impossible." "We both know that's not true, because there's no limit to what we can do. Now, Black Crescent Dragon. Attack Black Thorn Dragon with Purple Rose Flare!" Crescent Rose and Black Rose appear behind Black Crescent Dragon as it fires a purple beam of energy that obliterates Black Thorn Dragon. (Iron Thorn 1600-0)
Iron Thorn stops, unable to hold back her tears. Ruby stops to get out of her own duel runner and hugs her twin, comforting her. "Thank you, Ruby Rose. I only wish this could last." "What do you mean?" "Since I failed my mission, the 3 Pure Nobles, Jose, Placido, and Lucciano will erase me. Here." She hands Black Rose Dragon, Thorn Rose Dragon, and Black Thorn Dragon to Ruby. "Use these to stop them from completing the Divine Circuit and destroying Neo Domino City. Goodbye."
Roman Torchwick looks on in panic as he realizes what's about to happen. "Time's up, Roman Torchwick." Jose taunts in Roman's head. "You've fulfilled your purpose. Now, back to your hole, rat." Roman screams in denial and frustration, but a flash of light envelops the area, and Roman finds himself back in his prison cell. Ruby looks around, but can't find Iron Thorn anywhere. She is replaced by Mercury, who curses in frustration as he has just lost.
