Twilight of the Gods
"A DOUBLE KNOCKOUT! IT ALL COMES DOWN TO RUBY ROSE AND LIE REN! BUT RUBY IS UP AGAINST TWO UNBEATABLE GODS, AND A THIRD IS DEFINITELY ON THE WAY!"
As Blake passes the baton to Ruby, and Gambol Shroud banishes itself from the field only to return, Ruby worries over how she will even start to take down two gods, let alone three. Worse, it was Ren's turn next, so she might not even survive the next attack. She looked over to her opponent who was joining alongside her, and what she saw was surprising. Ren seemed to have hyped himself up and let out a primal howl. He seemed so chill, Ruby thought.
"I DRAW!" (Ren 6-7, Ruby 2-3) "I summon Valkyrie of the Nordic Ascendant!" A fairy wielding a sword flies in. (Level 2/400) "I then activate her effect! By discarding two cards, I summon two Einherjar tokens!" The valkyrie swings her sword and two ghostly warriors rise from the ground. (Level 4/1000) "I tune my two level 4 Einherjar tokens with my level 2 Valkyrie! The all-seeing and all-powerful king who rules the heavens circling the north star, now show your might that reigns over the gods of Asgard! Synchro summon! He who rules the world ordained by the gods! The highest god, Odin, Father of the Aesir!" Above them, an old man with only one eye carrying a spear descends, his size dwarfing Thor and Loki. (Level 10/4000)
"AS EXPECTED OF THE LEADER OF TEAM RAGNAROK! HE'S BROUGHT OUT HIS OWN GOD CARD IN ONE MOVE!"
"I activate the effect of Odin, giving my monsters immunity to all spells and traps until the end phase. Influence of Rune!" Odin raises his spear and he, Thor, and Loki glow for a second. "Thor, steal Gambol Shroud's effect!" Thor drains the light from Gambol Shroud. "Now, Loki, attack Gambol Shroud Dragon! Vanity Bullet!" The trickster fires a shot of dark energy that decimates Gambol Shroud. (Ruby 4000-3200) "Thor, wipe her out with Thunder Pile!"
As Thor lets fly his hammer, Ruby is quick to intervene. "I activate the effect of my Kurihedge in my hand! Since you declared a direct attack, I can special summon Kurihedge and negate the attack!" Kurihedge appears and catches the hammer, blocking the attack. (Level 1/300) "Odin, destroy Kurihedge with Heaven's Judgement!" Odin throws his spear with deadly accuracy, skewering the small monster. "I activate the effect of Speed World 2, removing 7 speed counters," (Ren 7-0) "to draw a card. I then activate my speed spell Monster Fuel. By destroying all of my monsters, I can gain 3 speed counters for each!" The three gods are turned into small balls of light that are absorbed into Ren's duel runner. (Ren 0-9)
He really used his monsters like that? Ruby was shocked. Of course, they all come back from the dead at the end of the turn, so it isn't really a cost. "I end my turn. Now, return, my god cards!" Thor rises from the ocean, hurling lightning at Ruby. (Ruby 3200-2400) A tear opens in the sky, and Loki crawls out. "When Loki is revived, I can add a trap from my graveyard to my hand." Ren explains as he adds back Trap Tracks. Finally, Odin descends from the sky. "When Odin is revived, I draw a card."
Ruby is especially worried, now that Odin is out, but there isn't much use letting her worry stop her. "I draw!" (Ren 9-10, Ruby 3-4) "I summon Leaf Mage!" A small girl in a brown robe carrying a staff appears. (Level 3/900) "When Leaf Mage is summoned, for every monster you control, I can summon a Leaf token." The girl raises her staff and three leaves appear. (Level 1/0) "I tune my three level 1 Leaf tokens with my level 3 Leaf Mage! Ready your seeds to germinate into a beautiful rose! Synchro summon! Appear, Seed Dragon!" A small dragon with small seeds over its wings appears. (Level 6/2000)
"When you activate the effect of a monster you control, I can tribute Seed Dragon to summon any Rose Dragon synchro monster from my extra deck for one turn." As Ruby explains this, the marks from her fellow signers disappear and reappear on her hand. "That includes Majestic Rose Dragon. I set a card and end my turn."
Ren narrows his eyes. "Foolish. You can't escape the will of the gods, Ruby Rose. Even with the power of the Crimson Dragon! I draw!" (Ren 10-11, Ruby 4-5) "I activate my speed spell Forward Trap! By removing 6 speed counters," (Ren 11-5) "I can activate a trap from my hand. I choose the recently added Trap Tracks! By destroying a monster I control, I can set a trap from my deck. I choose Loki!" Loki is destroyed and a new card is added.
"I now activate my new face-down, Odin's Eye! By negating the effects of all my god cards, I can look at one of your face-down cards. And since I control a god, Odin's Eye can't be negated. Since I already know about the other two, let's look at your new one." Odin's left eye, covered by a metallic eye-patch, opens to reveal a white glow. Within that glow, Ruby's trap can be seen. "Ah, Apocalypse Storm. If I activated Odin's effect to make my monsters immune, you could have used Seed Dragon to summon any number of Rose Dragons that can wipe out the field. Then, when my monsters return, you can banish Apocalypse Storm to deal damage to me equal to the combined attack of all my destroyed monsters, winning you the duel. Instead, I will set a card and end my turn." During the end phase, Loki reappears and Ren adds Odin's Eye back.
Ruby groaned in frustration. She was sure she had him, but in hindsight, it figures that it wouldn't be that easy. "I draw!" (Ren 5-6, Ruby 5-6) She looks over her hand and sadly realizes she can't improve her situation right now. "I end my turn." "Finally, you've accepted fate. I draw!" (Ren 6-7, Ruby 6-7) "I activate the effect of Odin, rendering all my monsters immune to your spells and traps."
"It's quite a conundrum that Ruby has found herself in." Penny remarks. "She knows that Ren has seen her plans, so presumably he's set a card that can stop her strategies. But if she doesn't use it, his god cards will most certainly overpower her." The rest of the team don't like the explanation, but can't help but accept the situation. Ruby, despite her hesitation, makes her decision. "I activate the effect of Seed Dragon, transforming it into Majestic Rose Dragon!" The seeds on Seed Dragon's back explode in a burst of light, causing it to transform into Majestic Rose Dragon. (Level 9/3700) "Majestic Rose Dragon destroys all other cards on the field. Rose Rebirth!" The dragon bombards the gods with petals, destroying all cards on the field.
Ruby breathes a sigh of relief, as at least that part of the plan worked out. Ren's confidence troubled her, however. "I end my turn." He proclaimed. As he did, Majestic Rose Dragon vanishes and the gods made their return. "I activate the effect of my Apocalypse Storm in my graveyard, banishing it to negate your monster's summon and deal damage to you equal to your monster's attack." A large wind appears behind Ruby and towards the gods. However, a sudden noise dispersed the wind. She notices a man atop Odin's shoulder with a large horn that has three yellow gems on it. "When I summon a god from the graveyard, I can activate Gjallarhorn from my graveyard. The turn I do so, the summon of my gods can't be negated. Also, Heimdall has sounded the horn. At the end of my third turn, Ragnarok will occur and the Aesir will be banished, with you taking damage equal to their attack." As he explains this, one of the yellow gems turns bright red.
"With a combined attack of over ten thousand, Ruby will lose for sure!" Pyrrha exclaims. "She just has to win before then." Blake says as though it were just that easy. "And since they have survived, I can activate each of the Aesir's effects!" Thor lets loose a barrage of lightning towards Ruby. (Ruby 2400-1600) Thanks to Loki, Ren adds Trap Tracks back to his hand, and thanks to Odin, he draws a card. "You see, Ruby? Fate is immutable. Your destiny is to lose, just as it was your mother's destiny to cause Zero Reverse. And it will be our destiny to defeat the 3 Pure Nobles and save Neo Domino City."
"Will you shut the fuck up about destiny?" Ruby yells. "I've absolutely had it with people telling me and my friends how our lives are supposed to go. Cinder couldn't tell me my future, the 3 Pure Nobles can't, and you sure as hell can't either! Me and my friends will forge our own future as we've been doing all along! I draw!" (Ren 7-8, Ruby 7-8) "I summon Red Lotus from my hand!" (Level 3/1300) "Red Lotus summons Revival Rose from my hand!" (Level 4/1300) "I tune my level 4 Revival Rose with my level 3 Red Lotus! The bloom of evolution blazes forth. Grow and grow ever stronger! Synchro Summon! Appear, Crescent Rose Dragon!" (Level 7/2400)
"I then activate my speed spell Double Summon! Since I have 2 or more speed counters, I can summon another monster this turn. I summon Ouroboros Willow!" (Level 3/100) "I activate its effect, turning a level into a Willow token." (Ouroboros Willow Level 3-2) (Willow Token Level 1/0) "I tune my level 1 Willow token with my level 2 Ouroboros Willow! Jewel of my eye, soar into the unknown and provide the path of evolution! Synchro Summon! Appear, the tuner monster, Ruby Dragon!" (Level 3/1300)
Ruby closes her eyes and focuses, red lightning shooting out as she does so. "The next branch of evolution appears! Blaze forth, my greatest power! Accel Synchro! Be Born, Silver Eyes Rose Dragon!" (Level 10/3500) Ren gazes on the monster in awe. "So this is the culmination of your power." "I activate Silver Eye's effect! By revealing the top five cards of your deck, I can destroy cards on your side of the field equal to the number of tuners revealed." She reveals 3 tuners; Power Seed, Rose Synchron, and Brain Strain. "Rose Barrage!" Ruby commands as Silver Eyes fires three orbs of energy that annihilate each of the three Aesir. "Silver Eyes, attack him directly with Silver Burning!" The dragon fires a black and white beam of energy that hits Ren dead on. (Ren 4000-500) "I activate the effect of Speed World 2, removing 7 speed counters," (Ruby 8-1) "to draw a card. I set that card and end my turn."
Ren dusts himself off as he admits hits terror at that power. If Ruby unleashed her full psychic power then, she could have killed me. No matter. I only need to wait. "Of course, since you attempted to slay the gods, you must pay the price." As Odin, Thor, and Loki return, they activate their effects. (Ruby 1600-800) Ren adds Nordic Relic Brisingamen to his hand and draws a card. "I draw!" (Ren 8-9, Ruby 1-2)
"I activate the effect of Odin, rendering your spells and traps useless. Influence of Rune!" Odin raises his spear, and the gods glow with power. "Now, Thor, steal Silver Eye's powers!" Thor raises his hammer, but before he can do so, Silver Eyes vanishes in a flash of light. "When your monster targets Silver Eyes with an effect or attack, I can banish it until the end phase to negate that." Ruby explains. "I then activate my face-down Missed Opportunity! Since I control no monsters during your main phase, you must skip your battle phase."
Ren smiles. "Clever. But it won't save you. From my hand I have two monsters that can be summoned to your side of the field if I control an Aesir. I summon Fenrir the Nordic Beast and Jormungardr the Nordic Serpent!" A large snake encircles Ruby, eating its own tail. (Level 8/3000) Within the circle, a white and blue wolf appears. (Level 10/4000) "During your battle phase, Fenrir will force all your monsters to attack position, and when Jormungardr is switched to attack position, you will take 3000 damage. I set a card and end my turn." As he does, Heimdall's horn gains its second counter.
This is bad, Ruby thinks. If I try to attack with Silver Eyes, Fenrir and Jormungardr will destroy me. Everything depends on this next draw. "I draw!" (Ren 9-10, Ruby 2-3) That'll work. "I summon Harvest Maiden!" A woman in farmer's clothing appears. (Level 2/0) "I can tribute Harvest Maiden and any number of monsters I control to gain life points equal to their life points times 100, then draw a card for every 1000 life points I gain. But I can't conduct my battle phase this turn." Harvest Maiden and the two Nordic monsters Ruby controls disappear in a flash of light. (Ruby 800-2800) Ruby then draws two cards. "I set two cards and end my turn."
"Gaining a pittance of life points won't save you from the gods." Ren taunts. "I draw!" (Ren 10-11, Ruby 3-4) "First I summon Tyr of the Nordic Champions!" A one-armed warrior appears. (Level 4/2000) "I then tribute him to activate his effect, preventing my gods from having their effects negated this turn." Tyr salutes the gods with his spear and vanishes. "Now I can activate my face-down Odin's Eye without care!" As Ren activates his face-down, Ruby smiles. "Got you. I activate my face-down Trick Mirror to steal Odin's Eye's effect!" A set of three mirrors appear, with Odin's reflection in them. The reflection's eye opens, and Ren's hand is revealed to Ruby. "And since it was my Odin's Eye that activated, your god's effects are sealed."
Ren groans. "I'll still wipe you out. First I activate the effect of Speed World 2 to remove 10 speed counters," (Ren 11-1) "to destroy your Silver Eyes!" A shot fires from Ren's duel runner, but the ghostly image of Seed Dragon appears to block the attack. "If a Rose Dragon I control would be destroyed by a card effect, I can banish Seed Dragon from my graveyard instead." "Then I'll just attack. Odin, destroy Silver Eyes with Heaven's Judgement!" Odin attempts to attack Silver Eyes, but Silver Eyes banishes itself instead. "I then activate my face-down Zero Force! Since my monster was banished, your monster's attacks become 0!" As Ruby declares this, a trio of purple rings flies out to hit each of the Aesir. (Thor 3500-0) (Loki 3300-0) (Odin 4000-0) Ren looks on, dumbfounded. Ruby had managed to completely seal away the three Aesir. "I...end my turn." He lets out in disbelief as the horn sounds its final blow, banishing the three gods.
"AMAZING! SINCE THE GOD CARD'S ATTACK WAS AT ZERO, RUBY TAKES NO DAMAGE FROM GJALLERHORN! A LAST MINUTE SAVE!"
As Silver Eyes returns to the battlefield, Ruby says to Ren "You see? No one can decide my future but me. I draw!" (Ren 1-2, Ruby 4-5) "Silver Eyes, attack Ren directly with Silver Burning!" The dragon fires a burst of white and black that Ren accepts with solemnity. (Ren 500-0)
"A DRAMATIC TWIST! IT'S THE QUINTESSENTIAL UNDERDOG STORY! DESPITE OVERWHELMING ODDS, RUBY DEFEATS THREE GODS AT ONCE! TEAM 5DS WILL MOVE ON TO THE FINALS!"
As the two stop their duel runners, Ren approaches Ruby with his previous composure. "Congratulations. I was wrong about you; perhaps you do have what it takes to defeat Team New World." He extends his hand to Ruby, who accepts it in gratitude.

As the machines did their work, upgrading Coco in various ways, only one thing ran through her mind. How would she face the signers, and how was she going to beat them?
