Floyd pat Branch's back as his youngest brother cried. "Feeling better?"
"Why can't we be a good family?" Branch asked through tears.
"What?"
"Every time we're together, we end up fighting, or, something...goes wrong," Branch admitted.
"Branch, no family is perfect," Floyd said. "It's just...I know it sounds weird, but...no family can come closer together without fighting." Branch sniffled. "No, no, I know what you mean."
"You do?" Floyd asked, surprised.
"Yeah, Poppy and I fought a while back before we became boyfriend and girlfriend. It was during the Rock Apocalypse. It's still no fun though."
"Yeah, true." Floyd pat Branch a few more times before Branch pushed himself off his brother. "Better?" Floyd asked.
"Yeah, a bit."
There was a knock on the tree bark. "Hey, man," Clay said from outside. "Can we come in."
"Yeah," Branch said.
Spruce moved the bark, allowed Clay to enter, before entering himself, then closing the bark behind him. "Hey, uh..." Spruce started before he stopped. He rubbed the back of his neck.
"Man, we're really sorry," Clay said.
"Very," Spruce agreed.
"You're right. We...we never listen to you," Clay added.
"And...we should do better," Spruce said.
"Can you forgive us?" Clay asked.
Both brothers stared in anticipation at Branch. Branch looked away from all of his brothers for a second before he looked back up, smiling. "You're cool. Just...please be careful."
"We will," Spruce said.
"And that's a promise," Clay replied.
"Then come here!" Floyd said, pulling them in. They gathered in a group hug again.
John Dory finished with his paints and threw the brush into a bucket of water. "There!" He wiped his brow and took a step back. "How's it looking?" he asked Poppy.
"Uhh..." she called down from the tree she is standing in. "Why don't you come up here and figure that out for yourself."
"It can't be that bad!" John replied, extending his hair, grabbing onto a branch, and pulling himself up next to Poppy. He looked down at the picture.
The picture is barely visible, as there are splotches of blue and yellow paint everywhere. Floyd's eyes are off center, along with John's hair. Branch is no even visible on the picture, and Clay is missing his eyes and nose.
"Woof," John said. "Geez."
"Yeah, it's rough," Poppy replied. King Peppy and Viva joined inside the tree. "Woah!" Viva cried. "What even is it?!"
"It was SUPPOSED to be our family portrait..." John mumbled.
"It's...I mean this in the nicest way possible...a disaster," King Peppy stated.
"Yeah, it is a bit rough," John admitted. "Maybe we can fix it!"
"John, I don't think that's such a good-" Poppy started.
"I can be the eyes up here and lead you three to the right spots to fix!"
"John-" Viva tried next.
"Let's see, first we need to fix Clay. He has no facial features..."
"John!" Poppy yelled. "Oof, maybe this is how Branch feels all the time," she muttered before turning her attention back to John. "John, please. There's nothing we can do to fix it."
"Sure we can, we just have to-" John started walking out of the tree before Viva grabbed his arm.
"John, stop," Viva said.
"You have to stop this," King Peppy said.
"But-it's so close!" John protested.
"No! John! You're not getting the point!" Poppy cried. They left the tree, using their hair to lower themselves. Poppy inhaled deeply. "John, look. I know you want to make it up to them. But if you keep avoiding it, it's just going to get worse."
"But...what if-"
"No 'what if's,' Viva said.
"Bu-"
"Ah-ah-ah!" Poppy said. "Nope! Look, John, you have to apologize to them!"
"But it's been so long!" John blurted out.
"John," Poppy demanded.
John Dory sighed. "I've been waiting on a sunset, bills on my mindset. I can't deny they're getting high. Higher than my income, income's bread crumbs. I've been trying to survive."
"The glow that the sun gets right around sunset," Poppy sang. "Helps me to realize this is just a journey, drop your worries. You are gonna turn out fine."
"Oh, you turn out fine," Viva added.
"Fine, oh, you turn out fine," King Peppy sang.
"But you gotta keep your head up, oh," Poppy sang.
"And you can let your hair down, eh, eh," Viva added.
"You gotta keep your head up, oh, oh," King Peppy sang.
"And you can let your hair down, eh, eh," Viva, Poppy, and King Peppy sang together. Viva and King Peppy added harmonized vocals behind Poppy. "I know it's hard, know it's hard to remember sometimes, but you gotta keep your head up, oh. And you can let your hair down, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh."
John Dory started again, Poppy joining in her family with the harmonizing, this time, humming. "I got my hands in my pockets, kicking these rocks. It's kinda hard to watch this life go by. I'm buying into skeptics. Skeptics mess with the confidence in my eyes. I'm seeing all the angles, thoughts get tangled. I start to compromise my life and my purpose, is it all worth it? Am I gonna turn out fine?"
Viva started this time with the pre-chorus. "Oh, you turn out fine. Fine, oh, you turn out fine."
"But you gotta keep your head up, oh, oh," King Peppy sang after his daughter.
"And you can let your hair down," Poppy sang. "You gotta keep your head up, oh, oh. And you can let your hair down, eh, eh."
"I know it's hard, know it's hard," Poppy's family harmonized together, "to remember sometimes. But you gotta keep your head up, oh, oh. And you can let your hair down, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh."
"Only rainbows, after rain," Poppy sang.
"The sun will always come again," Viva followed.
"And it's a circle, circling," King Peppy finished. "Around again, it comes around again, I say..."
"Only rainbows after rain," Poppy and Viva sang together. "The sun will always come again."
"It's a circle, circling," Poppy added with King Peppy. "Around again, it comes around."
"But you gotta keep your head up, oh," Poppy sang by herself. "And you can let your hair down, eh, eh."
"You gotta keep your head up, oh, oh," Viva joined in. "And you can let your hair down, eh, eh."
"I know it's hard, know it's hard," King Peppy joined in last, harmonizing with his daughters. "To remember sometimes, but you gotta keep your head up, oh, oh. And you can let your hair down, eh, eh, eh, eh."
"Keep your head up," Poppy sang, with King Peppy and Viva adding a Capella notes in the background. "And you can let your hair down. Keep your head up, and you can let your hair down. Keep your head up, and you can let your hair down. Say oh-"
King Peppy and Viva met Poppy's note and followed the rest of the way through with her. "No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no..."
"So see," Poppy said once the musical piece was finished. "Sometimes, even the smallest gift will do. Now go over to Branch's bunker and apologize! It'll mean the world to them!"
John sighed again. "I guess you're right...I'll head over."
"There you go!" Viva cheered.
"Go get 'em!" Poppy cheered. King Peppy cheered with no words.
John walked back over to Branch's bunker and stopped short of knocking. "Should I really do this? I mean, Poppy's song sure was encouraging but..." He stopped. "Yeah, I have to. For Branch!"
He knocked loudly on the rock. "Branch? Are you in there? We need to talk!"
The brother's stood in silence for a second. "Should we answer?" Clay asked.
"It's John!" Floyd exclaimed.
"Yeah, but he just left us," Spruce added.
"He came back," Branch said.
"For whatever who-knows-what reason," Clay said.
"Just open the door!" Branch said, shoving his way through his brothers. Branch opened the mat of his bunker. "Yes?"
"I...uh...need to talk to...all of you," John said, twirling his thumbs. Branch raised an eyebrow, moved from the door, and tol everyone to come up. Clay and Spruce were reluctant, but did so anyways.
"I-uh-" John started. He stopped. He can't do this. It's been so long! He was with them a few weeks ago when they stopped Velvet and Veneer from killing Floyd with their perfect family harmony, but, he's never officially apologized. It's just...too much all at once.
"Well?" Branch asked, crossing his arms.
