The emotional rollercoaster one goes through while sitting in a hospital waiting room is torture. You try to stay positive, but as time goes by without any news of your loved ones' condition, the negativity sets in; you don't know how they are, if they're okay, or if they're alive. There's nothing you can say, and there's nothing you can do but wait. The waiting part is the hardest.
Stella has been sitting in the cold waiting room for four hours now. It's been four hours since Gabby showed up at her house, telling her news she never wanted to face. She replays Gabby's words over and over. "It's Severide; he's in the hospital in the burn unit. It's bad, Stella, really bad." But she didn't respond; she just stood there looking at Gabby. It's like the words wouldn't come. She tried to talk, but nothing came out. She remembers hearing those words but doesn't recall anything else. She doesn't remember leaving her house or the ride to the hospital; she doesn't even remember walking into Med. But somehow, she did it because she was sitting in the hard, cold chair in the freezing waiting room, surrounded by Kelly's firehouse family.
She's sitting there with her arms crossed around herself, wishing she had brought her jacket, staring down at her lap. She can sense them all glancing at her like they are waiting for her to fall apart. They expected her to scream and yell, throw a tantrum in the middle of the waiting room, slap a nurse, bust a window, and punch a doctor. Do something crazy, say something, but she doesn't; she can't; she can't speak; she can't look at them; she can do anything. She just sits there, staring at her lap.
The numbness has settled in; she wants to scream; she wants to run through those double doors and demand someone tell her what the fuck is going on; she needs to see him; she needs to touch him, kiss him, and hold him. She needs him to be okay; she needs someone to come out of those damn doors and tell her he is okay and he's going to be fine. What is taking so long? She asks herself as she glances up at the doors, hoping they will open.
She closes her eyes, trying to think positively, but her past experiences with hospitals outweigh her positive thoughts. She hates this hospital; the last time she was here, she was fifteen, and behind those doors was her mom. She remembers it like it was yesterday when the doctors told Gabby's mom the most horrible news of her entire life: her mom died in this stupid hospital, and now her boyfriend, fiancé, or ex-fiancé she doesn't exactly know what to call him. He could be dying, or he is dead; she doesn't know because there is no fucking communication in this hospital.
She feels alone even though she is surrounded by people; she feels like she is the only one there.
Her eyes snap open at the feel of someone's hand on her knee. It's Gabby's. She looks over at her friend and gives her a small smile. She looks back down at her friend's hand and stares at the wedding ring on her finger. Just a week ago, she had a ring on her finger promising her forever, but she took it off and gave it back, and now she wishes she had it; she thinks it would make her feel closer to Kelly.
"Stella," a voice says, looking up at the voice. "I'm sorry to bother you, but I have to give you something."
She gives him a confused look but doesn't speak. "I don't know if you remember me, but I'm Joe Cruz; Severide was my lieutenant. I was with him when the explosion happened."
Her eyes widened, but she still has no words. She wanted to ask what happened, but she couldn't form words. "Cruz, this isn't the right time," Gabby said, she thought Stella wasn't prepared for what Cruz was going to say. Stella gave Gabby a look, which Gabby asked. "Do you want to know what happened?"
Stella nods, and Gabby gives her a sigh. "Okay, tell her Cruz." Gabby grabbed her hand as Cruz began.
"We got a call, and when we got there, the house seemed fine, like nothing was wrong. Neighbor came running from the back says he poured gasoline all over the house; he's trying to kill them," he paused. "We took quick action. Capp and Tony went up the stairs looking for victims, and Severide and I looked around downstairs, but we found no one. The house was empty, but the gasoline smell was strong, it was everywhere."
"Severide said that there had to be a timer set to go off that would cause an explosion or something. You know there had to be a reason why this man soaked everything in the house with gasoline." Tony added.
"So, he had us searching for a timer, a bomb, or anything that could ignite a fire. We went outside, and he was crawling on the ground, trying to look into the small square windows in the basement, and he saw a little girl in the basement. She was sitting in the middle of the floor, just playing with a baby doll and smiling, so he made a plan to get in there and get her. There was this mental door that took us a good five minutes to get the freaking thing open. After we got inside, Severide and I saw the bomb. It was on the door. It had sixty seconds blinking on it. He told me to get out, and he ran to the girl. He was able to get the girl, but as he was coming up the stairs that led out to the backyard, that's when the explosion happened."
Stella bit her lip and looked down at the floor. "I rode with him and the ambulance, and the paramedics were able to revive him for a few seconds; he took this off," he tells her as he pulls the chain out of his pocket. "He told me to make sure if anything happened to him, you got this," he says, handing Kelly's dog tag chain to her.
She takes the chain and stares at it, noticing the dog tag isn't the only thing on the chain. Her ring was on the chain, he was wearing her ring around his neck. She felt sick now. She was sitting there holding her boyfriend's necklace with her ring on it, the ring she had given back to him a week ago. She was the last thought in his mind before he lost consciousness. And she can't cry. What the hell is wrong with her? She wants to cry; she wants to cry so bad, but nothing-not even one tear. Her eyes are dried; she's not even teary-eyed. How can she be so numb, so heartless, and so unmoved by what Cruz just told her?
She feels bad because she knows they're expecting her to say something, to have some kind of reaction, and she has nothing; she just sits there staring at the ring. She doesn't show any emotions. She can't feel anything; she can't speak; she can't think straight; she's numb; she hates feeling numb; she spent years being numb; then Kelly came along and made her feel again. And now she feels like she's back to the emotionless woman she was a year ago.
"Is there a Stella Kidd here?"
She looks up at the black-haired man. She raises her hand because she forgot how to talk; words will not come out of her mouth. Thankfully, Gabby spoke up. "This is Stella Kidd."
"Stella, Kelly had you down as his emergency contact." She nods as she slowly gets up; she's not even sure how she's standing. Maybe it's because she's got Gabby on one side and Cruz on the other; they're pretty much holding her up. "Kelly has severe burns on his legs, broken ribs, and a pretty bad concussion."
"Is he awake?" Gabby asked.
"No, not yet."
"But he will wake up?" Cruz asks.
"I can't make promises; it's a waiting game now."
"Doc, how bad are his legs? Are we talking about permanent damage here or what?" Casey spoke up.
"I can't give you a straight answer until he wakes up, so we can test his legs. Burns can be life-altering and cause permanent injury and paralysis."
"Oh my God!" Gabby cries.
"Let's not think negatively. I'm not saying that's the case here; I don't know what we're dealing with when it comes to his legs until he wakes up, but I can tell you the burns aren't as bad where we will have to amputated. This occurs when people have very deep burn wounds or burn injuries that affect the deeper tissue below the skin. His burns aren't affecting his tissue, so that's good news, but if he will be able to walk again, I can't answer that till he wakes up."
"Can we see him?" Gabby asked.
"Sure, but it is awful late, so I would say no longer than maybe a minute or two. He's in the recovery room."
"Okay, thank you."
"How about we all just head home? We'll come by in the morning to see him." Cruz said. "That way, Stella can spend some time with him."
Stella gave him a small smile.
Gabby and Casey walked Stella to the room as the rest of the firehouse members left. As they approached the door, Stella stopped walking. "Are you okay?"
She nods and takes a deep breath. She needs to mentally and emotionally prepare herself for what's behind the door.
Gabby opens the door slowly as the three-walk in. He looks like he's sleeping; she smiles as she gets closer. The room was tranquil for a few moments. As they examined his body, she touched his cheek with one hand and the bandage on the side of his head with the other. She kisses his forehead. And for the first time in over four hours, she speaks. "He called me forty-five times this week, left me forty-two voicemails, and texted me, but I lost count of the text messages."
Gabby and Matt exchange looks as they stand there, watching her slowly break. "He said I love you in all forty-two voicemails; he texted me every morning and said I love you; he texted me randomly through the day and said I love you; and he texted me every night saying good night, I love you... Expect tonight. I didn't get the goodnight. I love your text tonight." Her tears were falling like crazy; it felt like all the tears she tried to call within the last four hours were coming out now. " What if I never get that text again?"
"Stella, he's going to wake up," Gabby tells her as she places her hand comfortably on her back.
"What if he doesn't? And I was so selfish that I didn't reply to any of his messages, telling him, I love him; what if he dies, and he never knows how much I love him?"
"He's not going to die," Matt tells her. "And trust me, he knows you love him. Your love for him and his love for you will get him through this."
Stella just stares at Kelly's face, wanting to believe them, but the negativity is fully in charge. "I texted him earlier today to let him know I was okay and not to be upset with you guys, and I begged you guys not to tell him. I needed some space to think. He was furious at first. But somehow, I managed to calm him down. I promised him I would be at the house when he got off shift. He was so happy; I said we would talk about everything, and he sent back all these hearts and kisses emojis, saying I love you and I can't wait to hold you." She traces his lips with her fingernail. "I sat there staring at the text; I didn't reply. I felt so bad because I lied to him."
Gabby's brow arched. "What do you mean?"
"I told him I would be at the house when he got off shift. And we can talk, but I had no intention of being there when he got home."
Gabby looked over at Matt, giving him an I told you look. "You were going to leave Chicago?"
Stella wipes her eyes as she shrugs her shoulders. Her eyes were still fixed on Kelly's face. "I don't know where I was going; I just knew I had to be out of that house before he got there. I couldn't face him."
" Stella..." Gabby began, but Stella continued to talk.
"We had our first real disagreement; we had little disagreements this past year, but nothing like this last one. And it was my fault; I take the blame. I should have told him when we first got serious. But every time I got close to telling him, I would talk myself out of it. We both said hurtful things, and I was more pissed that he was being so selfish. I knew he was hurting, but he was acting like he was the only one hurting. My thoughts and feelings on the subject didn't matter. I never really thought about having kids till you got pregnant."
Gabby closes her eyes, knowing how much she cried during her pregnancy.
"Kelly commented in the hospital when you were in labor about being a dad one day. And I said nothing; I should have told him." She starts shaking, so Gabby wrapped both arms around her. "We should have talked about other ways to have kids; we would have been good parents, but now..."
"Now nothing. Stella, you guys can still adopt; there are tons of kids looking for good homes." She turned to face her. "Listen to me, you are not going to lose him; he is going to wake up and be so relieved and happy that you are here. You guys will figure things out because you two are supposed to be together; it's written in the stars. Stop with the negative thoughts... I know you have lost a lot in your life, but you are not going to lose him. He will wake up, and you two will get married and adopt a baby, or whatever you guys decide. It will happen."
Stella smiles a little and hugs Gabby tightly. "I love him so much, Gabby; I can't lose him. I don't know what I would do without him."
"I know, honey, you aren't going to lose him." They held each other for a moment.
"I hate to interrupt, but Kelly needs his rest," Maggie said, walking into the room.
"I'm not leaving," Stella spoke in a serious, flat tone.
"I can only vouch for family members to stay...
"She is his fiance." Gabby interrupted Maggie.
Maggie was surprised. "I didn't know he was engaged." Stella held up the ring. "Okay, I will make a note that he has a fiancé; what is your name?"
" Stella."
"Stella is staying with him." She gave Matt and Gabby a confused look.
"Did she think we were lying?" Matt asked Gabby.
"No one knew they were engaged but us, so she was probably just being cautious about it."
Stella took the ring off the chain and placed it back on her finger. And then she he took the chain and placed it around his neck. Gabby smiled at her actions. "Well, now they know." She said as she looks at the ring on her finger.
Gabby kissed her cheek and said, "We are going to go. Call us if anything changes."
"I will."
"I love you..."
"I love you too." She tells them as they walk out of the room, leaving her alone with Kelly. She caresses his face softly. "Please don't leave me." She kisses his forehead. "I need you to come back to me, okay? I love you. I love you so much, Kelly. I'm not going anywhere."
Maggie had walked back into the room and witnessed her little chat with Kelly. "Sorry again." Stella looks over at her. "This room gets pretty cold at night, so I thought you could use a blanket." She hands her a blanket and pillow.
"Thank you."
"I've known Kelly for a long time; I know his dad too. I heard he met someone who changed his whole life around; this man used to come in here hitting on all my nurses. I used to threaten to ban him from this hospital if he didn't leave my nurses alone." She laughed.
"I heard he was a wild one." Stella smiles.
"A while back, Lord, I think it was like a year ago. He came here to check on a patient, and I had just hired two new young nurses. When I saw him, I thought, Damnit, it's their first day, and he's going to hit on them and make them feel uncomfortable." She smiles as she thinks about that day." But he surprised me and walked right by them, not once looking at them. He came straight to me, questioning me about a victim. I was shocked, I thought he was sick, so I asked him if he had a fever. He gave me this confused look and said, No, why?"
Stella was very curious about where this story was going.
"I said because, for the first time since I've met you, you walked by two very beautiful nurses without hitting on them or checking them out. He gave me that smirky look and shrugged. He said I'm a taken man. Maggie, I met the girl I'm going to marry one day. He was glowing like the sun as he talked about this amazing woman who stole his heart. I knew your name but never got to meet you. You have no idea how much of a blessing you have been to this man's life. You changed him and made him a better version of himself. I didn't know he finally got engaged. But I'm so happy you said yes. You saved him."
"We are engaged." She tells her, holding up her hand and showing her the ring. "And we saved each other." She looks back down at him. "He brought me back to life; he's the reason I'm still alive."
Maggie touched her shoulder. "He's going to be fine; I just know it." She gives her one last smile before walking out of the room.
"I know it too." She leans over and places a light kiss on his lips. "I love you, Kelly Severide, and I always will." She then takes the chair and pulls it as close to his bed as possible. She wrapped herself up and stared at him. She knew she wouldn't be able to sleep, but just being near him was a relief for now.
She was right; sleep never happened for her, and with the nurses coming in throughout the night to check on him, it was hard to get relaxed. It was now a little after seven in the morning, and she just sat there staring at him.
"Hey! Is this a bad time?"
She looks over. "No, there haven't been any changes; he's still the same."
"I was worried all night," Cruz said as he entered the room fully. "He is one of the best lieutenants and one of the best friends I have."
"He talks about you a lot."
"He does?"
"Yeah, he's proud of the man you became; you're one of his favorites. He looks up to you and respects the hell out of you."
Her words brought tears to his eyes. "That means a lot. I'll do anything for that man."
"He would do anything for you guys."
Cruz nods. "Did you want me to go grab you a coffee? I don't mind."
"I appreciate that."
"Of course." Cruz turned to leave.
"Hey, what happened to the little girl Kelly saved? Do you know if she's okay?"
Cruz turned back around. "Yeah, Maggie said she has some cuts and stuff-a few burns-but is expected to make a full recovery."
"That's good." Stella was happy to hear that. She wondered about the little girl all night.
"Unfortunately, according to Mouch, the little girl's mom was in the basement. Apparently Severide, and I didn't see her. Trudy said that the mom was handcuffed to a hot water tank and had some kind of gag over her mouth. "
"Her mom died?"
"Yeah, it was some kind of domestic dispute going on apparently for months; she issued a restraining order against him. But that didn't work."
"That's horrible. Does she have other family, like aunts and uncles?"
"Child services are looking into it. I feel bad for her; she's about two or three and has no idea her mom is gone."
"Poor thing," Stella whispered as she looked back at Kelly. "It sucks growing up without a mom."
Cruz wasn't sure what to say to her. "I'm going to go get that coffee."
She doesn't acknowledge him; she just stares at Kelly, her mind on the little girl whose world just took a horrible turn."
A few hours later, Gabby and Matt came into the room. "Hey, girl!"
" Hey!"
"No changes?" She asked as they hugged.
"No, not yet." Her tone was flat and distant.
"Stella, maybe you should go home and get some rest." She tells her as she takes in her pale skin and bloodshot eyes.
"No, I promised him I wasn't going anywhere, and I need to be here when he wakes up."
"Okay."
Stella bit her lip nervously. "Actually, could you guys stay with him just for a few minutes? I need to go check on something."
Gabby gave her an odd look. "Sure, go do what you have to do."
Stella leans down and kisses his lips twice. "I love you; I'll be right back." She tells him with another quick peck before walking towards the door.
"Where is she going?" Matt asked his wife.
"I don't know; it must have been important."
Stella nervously stood in the elevator as lots of thoughts entered her mind. She wasn't sure why she was doing this, but she felt like she had to. She couldn't get this little girl off her mind. She walks off the elevator, looking for room 1702. She takes a deep breath before entering the room.
As she walks into the room, she hears the television and some kind of cartoon playing. "Hi, who are you?" The little black, curly-haired girl asked
"I'm Stella Kidd; what's your name?"
"Destiny Marie Jones."
"That's a pretty name." Stella walks further into the room. "How old are you?"
" Three." Stella nods her head at her. "Do you want to watch cartoons with me?"
" Sure." She sat down beside her bed in the chair. And pretends to watch TV, but her mind is preoccupied now. She wondered if God was trying to speak to her, first Joshua, now Destiny, was this some kind of sign?
Gabby sat beside Kelly's bed and watched as her husband paced back and forth. "Babe, please sit down."
Matt sighed as he walked over to the other chair. "I hate hospitals."
"Me too."
"I thought Maggie said his signs were getting better; if that's so, why hasn't he woken up yet?"
"I don't know, babe."
"Do you think he's going to wake up?" Matt was starting to have doubts now.
Gabby reached for his hand. " I...
"You guys talk too much." A voice said, stopping Gabby from finishing her sentence.
Gabby jumped up. " Severide?"
Matt slowly rises. "Your awake."
Kelly gave them both a confused look, and he slowly sat up. "Damn, my head is throbbing." He said this as he closed his eyes and held his head.
"Well, you got a concussion, so it makes sense for your head to hurt," Gabby tells him, smiling and crying, she was just happy he was awake.
"A concussion?" He opens his eyes. "How? What happened?"
Gabby stepped away while Matt filled Kelly in on what happened to him.
Stella laughed at the silly cartoon and glanced over at the little girl, who was holding a pink unicorn tight.
"So you like unicorns?"
"I love unicorns. My bedroom at my old house was all unicorns."
"Cool, I like unicorns too," Stella tells her. Her phone vibrates. "Gabby, is everything okay?"
"Kelly's awake."
Stella's eyes widen, and tears immediately start to fall. "I'm coming. I'm coming." She tells her as she stands up. She puts her phone in her back pocket. "Sweetie, I have to go now. But I'll be back later, okay?"
"Okay, Stella."
She can't explain why, but she reached out and hugged the little girl. "Everything is going to be okay, I promise." She tells her before exiting the room.
Matt went and got the doctor, who was now examining Kelly. Who was just lying there, wondering where Stella was or if she even came to see him? He swears he heard her voice; maybe it was his mind playing tricks on him.
"Your pain should subside soon." Doctor Ethan tells him as he checks his ribs. "Okay, now let's talk about the burns on your legs."
"My legs?" Kelly didn't even know his legs were injured.
Doctor Ethan pulled the blanket up, and all their eyes widened as they saw his legs wrapped up. "I'm going to touch your feet. Let me know if you feel it."
"Okay." Kelly nervously watched as the doctor took a metal object and poked his foot. He poked it four times. Kelly was starting to get worried. He looked over at Gabby and Matt, who were staring intensely at the doctor. He can't feel it, and now he's freaking out. "I don't feel it."
"What about this?" Doctor Ethan asks as he wiggles his big toe.
" I..." He started to speak as the door opened and Stella walked into the room. Their eyes connected, and the relief that washed over them both was like the calm sea after a strong summer storm.
"Kelly," Doctor Ethan said. "Kelly, do you feel that?"
Stella got closer to the bed and broke contact as she watched the doctor wiggle his toes. Kelly was still looking at her, not acknowledging the doctor's question. "Kelly, can you feel that?" Stella asked, and her eyes begged him to answer.
He shook his head and said, "Yeah, I can." He replied as he continues staring at Stella who gave him her infectious smile, and he smiles back. She walks up to him.
"Try to wiggle your toes for me."
"Okay." All eyes went to his toes.
" Yes." Was echoed through the room as he wiggled his toes. "That's a good thing, right?"
"A very good thing. We will give it a few hours, and I'll try the bottom of your feet again. Now your knees are going to be a big concern because the majority of your burns are over your knees."
"So what does that mean?"
"You won't be able to walk without help; you can't bend your knees; you are...
"For a few days, right?" Kelly asked, cutting the doctor off.
"No, not a few days more, like a few weeks or longer. Everyone's recovery is different."
"I can't be down for a few weeks."
Stella put her hand over his mouth. "You are going to be down for as long as the doctor says so; you are going to do whatever the doctor tells you to do. You will need physical therapy, and you are going to do physical therapy too. Because I will take you and be right beside you. I don't care if it takes two weeks, six weeks, or six months. Whatever the time frame is to get you back to normal, you need time to heal properly, Kelly. You are not rushing through this. Do you hear me?" She asked as she removed her hand.
He was surprised she covered his mouth, but when she said she would be beside him, that gave him the reassurance he needed. As long as she's still his and helping him through this, he doesn't care how long it takes. "Yep, I hear, and I'll do anything you say. I like taking orders from you."
She smiles, leans over, and kisses him. "Good, now we're on the same page."
Later that evening, after everyone came and visited and then left, Stella sat on the side of the bed and looked at him. "You scared me." She finally admitted now that they were alone. Her tears were creeping slowly down her face.
"I know; I'm sorry." He reached out and caressed her face.
"I love you, Kelly. I love you so much, and I'm sorry for not telling you. It was definitely a conversation we should have had months ago, but I was scared and I didn't know how."
Kelly put his finger on her lips. "Stella, it's fine. We both were at fault; we both could have handled that situation differently and with more maturity than we did. I love you more than you will ever truly understand. I want to be a dad, Stella. I want a family with you."
Her tears were falling faster now. "I can't give you a family, Kelly. I want to, but my insides are too damaged."
"Baby, I don't need our kids to look like me." He adjusted the bed so he was sitting up straight and closer to her. "I was looking into adopting this past week. I think we could give a child or children the best life possible; we would be amazing parents. I wanted a baby, toddler, or school-age kid; I don't care about their age. I just want to create a family with you; as long as I have you, nothing else matters."
She wipes her eyes. "Are you sure that adopting is what you want?"
"I am."
She leans forward and kisses him as he deepens the kiss. They pull back and smile at each other. They take a moment to enjoy the silence between them. "Do you believe in coincidence?"
"Yeah, I guess, so why?"
"Because I think what I'm about to tell you is a good coincidence for us." She ran her fingers through her hair. Kelly smiled as he noticed the ring. He takes her hand and plays with the ring. She smiles. "I promise I will never take it off again."
"I hope not; I can't wait to slip on your wedding band, and then you'll be stuck with me for life," he teased.
"I can't either, and I don't want to wait; once you get better, I want to get married."
" Really? Are you sure?"
"I can't wait to be your wife, Kelly Severide. I don't need a huge wedding; all I need is you."
"You're all I need to." He kisses her softly. "As soon as I'm able to walk again, we are getting married." They share some more sweet kisses. "So tell me about this good coincidence that happened to you."
She smiled and took out her phone. "Well, I got some surprising news right before Gabby came to tell me you were hurt. You remember Raven?"
" Yeah." He whispered, hoping it was good news.
"She is safe; she is alive." Her happy tone was filled with so much excitement.
"Stella, that's amazing. You found her? You've seen her?"
She shakes her head. "No, McKay did, but she is safe with her grandma somewhere out there, and that makes me so happy," she paused. "She came back to Chicago last week; apparently she was nine months pregnant."
"Oh my, at fourteen, that poor girl."
"Yeah, she had the baby here in this hospital about a week ago. She decided she didn't want the baby; she wasn't mentally, physically, emotionally, or financially stable enough to raise him."
Kelly's eyes widened. " Him? It was a boy?"
" Yeah." She goes to her text messages on her phone. She asked Zoey to send her a picture. "This is Joshua Michael." She shows him the picture. And smiles as his face lights up.
"He's adorable." His tone was full of happiness. "So she put it up for adoption?"
"Well, that's the thing." She looks at the little boys' faces and back at Kelly's. He was giving her a continue on look. "I don't know why, but Raven signed him over to us; he could be our son if we want him."
Kelly gave her a confused and odd look. "She wants us to raise her baby."
Stella nods. " Wow! Do you want the baby?"
Stella smiles. "Honestly... yes... I do and I think Joshua Michael Severide is a magical name. And we would totally rock as his parents."
"So, by coincidence, we have a disagreement about having a baby. And then, out of the blue, a girl you have been desperately searching for has a baby and signs him over to you."
"To us, she signed him over to us, Kelly. There is a letter addressed to both of us, but I haven't read it yet. I just found out right before your accident. So it's been a wild twenty-four hours."
"Where is he now?"
"McKay's mom Zoey has him; she said she would keep him till we decide, or she could take him to foster care if we decide not to take him." She bit her lip, waiting for Kelly's response.
Kelly thought about it for a moment. "I want him."
"You do?" She asked excitedly. " Really?"
"Yes, I do." He takes her hands into his. "I'm not the biggest spiritual person, but I do believe that this is a sign from God; he wants us to take in the baby and raise him. He knows we are ready, and we will love and guide him in the right direction."
"I think it's a sign too... It's going to be a little crazy with your recovery process and taking care of an infant."
"True, but we have a whole firehouse that would be happy to help us, in anyway, we need it." He leans forward. "We can do this, Stella Kidd."
She rested her forehead against his. "I know we can. We can do anything as long as we are together."
" We are going to be a family you, me and Joshua."
