Amata was excited about her first venture from Vault 101. Yes, she would be escorted by two people from her security team, but this was the only way the newly formed council would allow their leader to leave the Vault at all. Amata knew making good relationships with the nearby settlement of Megaton would be required if they were going to last much longer. The viability of their isolation had never truly clicked for her until she had gone through James' records. Now she understood the strict reproduction rules of the vault. It was not just to maintain the population, but also to avoid the genetic disasters inbreeding can cause. She also found out that quite a few dwellers had done their duty to their future and then quietly had affairs with a person of their preferred gender instead of their assigned spouse. She could not blame them for that, given her secret.
Amata looked over the approaching walls of Megaton. Would Chiyo Arashi be there, her best friend and childhood crush? The girl who had dyed her hair pink her entire life to stand out, no matter how much both their fathers groaned about it. Banishing her from Vault 101 had been the hardest decision Amata had ever made. The prospect of leading their home without her at her side was daunting. However, she had complied with the wishes of the majority and silenced her dissent. She had pushed her beloved back into the Capital Wasteland. She hoped she would see Chiyo there and just maybe she would not hate her for what she had done.

They were admitted into Megaton and Amata's eyes widened at the many ramps and homes set up. The settlement was larger than she ever imagined. Then she saw the massive bomb right in the center of town. Her heart raced at the sight, and she saw her guard's grimace. Then a pleasant male voice spoke from beside her.
"No need to fear, little lady. That bomb has been disarmed for months now. Our very own guardian angel saw to that. Welcome to Megaton, my name is Lucas Sims. I'm the town mayor and sheriff."
"Hello, sir," Amata spoke, trying her best to sound official. "My name is Amata; I am the new Overseer of Vault 101."
The man's eyes narrowed before softening again. "Oh, are you? Heard quite a bit about you, Miss. From that same guardian angel. If you are here to drive her further away from your home, I will have to ask you to leave. Miss Arashi is one of us now, and we will not tolerate anyone taking our protector away."
Amata felt tears sting her eyes. The things this man must have heard from Chiyo would not have been too flattering. After all, she did push her out of the place she lived all her life.
"I'm sorry, I came to discuss trade and mutual alliance between the settlement of Megaton and Vault 101. I had no plans to try and drive anyone away."
The sheriff nodded. "Very good. I'm sorry, but you caused your former resident no end of grief when you pushed her out of your vault. She had just lost her father and then she lost the only home she had ever known. Surprised she didn't turn to the bottle if I'm being honest. I know I would have had a few drinks. Instead, she joined my organization, the Regulators, and has been making the wasteland a better place."
Amata smiled, her heart aching. "I would love to hear more about her exploits if we had the time. But alas, I need to get this treaty signed and return to the Vault."
The Sheriff looked over at her. "I see you are conflicted. Your duty, or your friend. You chose duty, but you wonder if you should have chosen the latter. Might I be frank, Miss Amata?"
Amata's heart raced and she nodded. "Please."
"Miss Arashi is strong. One of the strongest women I know. But there is only so much she can handle alone. Every day, she goes out and makes things safer for everyone. She then comes home to her empty house and stays there until morning when she goes out again. Would be nice if she had someone to save her, even as she saves all of us."
Amata nodded. "I will consider your words. For now, to business?"
The Sheriff nodded. "Aye. To Business."

Chiyo came through the gates of Megaton and stepped out of her Winterized T-51B Power Armor, carefully closing the suit and removing its fusion core. As she did, she saw the sniper move in her direction, confirming that anyone but her who tried to enter it would be shot. She waved up at him before heading to her left and up the ramp to her house. As she got to the top, she saw a tanned-skinned young woman in a vault suit waiting in a chair outside her home. Chiyo stopped, gasping in surprise. Amata looked up, a grin on her face.
"Hey, you. Seems like you got a nice place here."
Chiyo rushed over and hugged her best friend, and if she was being honest, the love of her life. "Amata, what are you doing here? Did you come alone?"
Amata shook her head. "Two guards escorted me, but I sent them back to the Vault. I won't be needing them anymore." Amata's hands wrap around Chiyo's waist.
She felt her cheeks blush at the intimate touch. "Why not?"
"I resigned as overseer. Someone convinced me that there is somewhere else I should be." She was now looking Amata in he eyes and Chiyo honestly could have sat and stared into her eyes forever.
"Oh, and where is that?" Chiyo asked, her breath coming in slowly.
"Here, with my Lone Wanderer. If she will have me."
Chiyo replied by closing the distance and kissing Amata fiercely on the lips. She would never be called the Lone Wanderer after that day, wherever she went, Amata was by her side. There would be plans and many things to do, but for now, all they needed was each other.

A/N: I have always shipped the Lone Wanderer with Amata, male or female. I hope you enjoyed this little story. Feel free to put your own character in Chiyo's place if you like. This is something I have wanted to write for a while and am glad I finally for the chance
