Prologue
"Any news from today's meetings?" Otto Hightower questioned his councilmen. Ser Otto needs to know what is going on.
Ever since years ago, after Driftmark Princess Rhaenyra married Daemon Targaryen and they took their children to Dragontsone to settle. They have been quiet for years and Otto wants to ensure they make no sudden attack.
'Not while the king is still breathing.' His thoughts sneered at Viserys the Peaceful.
"There is news in Highgarden." Ser Tyland Lannister speaks.
Alicent and Ser Otto pay more attention to their lords and the warden of Highgarden.
Despite this, they are now married and blood-related to Targaryen.
However, Tyrells often reminded the Hightowers that they still ruled the Reach as their high lords. No matter what status changed in marriage the Hightowers still swore an oath to them.
They do not care even if they are crowned.
They are still their vassals who bowed before the Tyrells.
"Princess Rhaella Targaryen now rules Highgarden as regent in favor of her nephew, young Lyonel Tyrell, and her young daughter, Raena from the previous Lord Alester Tyrell. She had decided to arrange two children to marriage to make a stronger claim to Highgarden."
Ser Otto's body had stiffened at the name he had forgotten in years.
Yes, he recalled the princess.
Princess Rhaella Targaryen was born from Vysenna Targaryen, the second daughter of Prince Aemon Targaryen and Lady Jocelyn Baratheon as well as the favorite niece of Princess Rhaenys the Queen who never was.
"Leave us. This meeting is dismissed." Ser Otto ordered which puzzled many of them, but they had no choice.
"Mayhap, this could be an opportunity for us." Ser Otto spoke for the first time.
"What do you mean?" Queen Alicent questioned him.
"Since Princess Rhaella Targaryen is regent. Perhaps, she can look upon the favor too since we Hightowers are part of Reach and Bannermen." Ser Otto spoke.
"But they said in Highgarden that Princess Rhaella is willful. Especially with such a beast of a dragon, Rhaedar, a hatching offspring of Vermithor." Alicent counters his reason.
Everyone in the seven kingdoms heard of Rhaedar.
Rhaedar has inherited from its sire Vermithor's scales of bronze with "great tan wings". Thou his size and features look like its mother Silverwings and the size.
However, don't underestimate his features and size from his mother. He can be quite aggressive as he would challenge other dragons to submit their dominance, but there is a reason why he does that. He was called champion to keep the wild dragons from being captured by pirates or their eggs from being stolen from their nest.
But his greatest legacy was challenging and defending their home from the ferocious Cannibal the dragon-eating monster. They said it was the greatest battle for a Dragon vs Dragon. Many feared that Cannibal would come to eat all the other wild dragons, but Rhaedar proved his speed, swiftness, and agility to counter-attacked devil of a beast. Cannibal was forced to fly away from the third generation of wild dragons. The Sailors claimed that Rhaedar had clawed Cannibal's right eye which was lost and became scarred from its fight.
Either way, Rhaedar had won his first battle.
Rhaedar let out a great roar to let every kingdom know that this land was off-limits.
Hence Rhaedar is their champion.
The protector of their kind.
Rhaedar the Champion of Dragons.
The same happened to his rider. Princess Rhaella Targaryen fought to defend the interfighting of the Reach. Ever since she married Lord Alester Tyrell, who needed a wife to produce an heir for Highgarden, was older than the princess, but they said she had fallen in love with her lord husband. He was a philosopher, warrior, and leader.
However, they only had one daughter which filled the void of his loneliness. His brother Julian Tyrell had died fighting the bandits and his good sister, Margary Redwyne had died giving birth to his nephew, Lyonel Tyrell.
Sadly, Alester was bedridden in a long health decline. Princess Rhaella learned from his close advisers and Maester to prepare for all things to come.
Despite the best healers, Apothecaries, and other Maesters, there is no cure to prevent his death.
His last words: "Protect Highgarden with all your strength and smarts." He had written his last orders that his daughter would be the heir and Lyonel Tyrell would be her consort. And Princess Rhaella will be regent until they come of age. Meaning she cannot married until that duty is over.
That was when Princess Rhaella decided to take up a position to hold the Highgarden and Reach.
She threatened to burn every oathbreaker and traitor who disapproved of her lord husband's decision to make her daughter heir and marry her young nephew as consort.
She quickly claimed Rhaedar to protect her family and the Reach.
Since her dragon is quite a legend, all possible oathbreakers and traitors were executed to the wall.
"But father how will we convince her that Aegon is the rightful king?" Alicent questioned her father. Alicent wished to protect her children from being killed by Rhaenyra and Daemon. Even if it makes Aegon king to live so be it.
"That is simple." Otto turned to his daughter and said, "We should send Prince Aemond and Vhagar to let them know whose side they should be on."
Alicent startled, "!"
She quickly stood up. "But Father….! Won't that give her the wrong message believing we are going to take Highgarden from her?"
Alicent doesn't want any trouble in their homeland and their Lords to go against them. Especially, she doesn't want her son (The most favorite child) to be captured or worse killed.
But knowing her father he will control things around her.
'He always does this even when I am queen.'
