Chapter 2
After spending a day at high school, Sam returned home with her brother. She found the year was 1985 and school had just began. Her father was stationed in California, her mother was still alive and Sam was a ripe old age of fifteen. Her brother was a year older and really wished he could be with the popular kids at the new school and Sam was placed in the advanced classes.
As they walked through the kitchen door Sam heard the telephone on the wall ring. She quickly answered it hoping it would be either Daniel or Jack. "Carter residence." she stated.
It was Daniel's voice, "Sam! It's Daniel! Say you know me." he begged.
"I know you." she nodded and grinned happy to hear his voice. "You saw a bright white light too?" she asked quietly.
"Yes! Then I'm standing in front of my parents as they are setting up a museum display. It's the same obelisk that would have fallen on them." He then confessed, "I warned them and my father got the maintenance guy to help. I think I prevented their deaths. Jack was with us. Did you hear from him?"
"Not yet." she replied. "I just got home from high school. I'm fifteen again."
"Me too," he agreed. "I'm in California. My folks have the display in the L.A. Museum. It's supposed to run all winter. You are in public school, Sam?"
"I am." she nodded.
"Maybe I can talk my folks into letting me go and we can meet up there." he suggested.
"Sounds like a plan." she agreed. "Do you remember stories about a man flying around like superman in the 80's?"
"No," he shook his head for that sounded idiotic.
"Neither do I and yet, it's all over the newspapers. Apparently, me and Mark are following it pretty close. It was all over the school too. But I don't remember anything about it."
"That is weird." he agreed. "I found a phone number that should be Jack's. I'm going to give him a call next."
"He would be older than us, Daniel." she reminded him.
"Only physically." he told her. "We need to figure out how to get back."
"We may not be able to get back. We were sent back mentally, not physically. We just live our life over again and hopefully we won't get caught by that stone again when we are older."
"That's forty years, Sam." he reminded her.
"I know." she confirmed. "Just try to stay out of history's way."
"I just changed that when I saved my folks today." he reminded her.
She suggested, "Just try not to change anything big. Like an election."
"Nothing big." he agreed.
Meanwhile
Jack returned from his tour and found himself living alone and only recently met the women who would become his wife in the future. His son was not even conceived yet. He was still a swinging bachelor and he debated if he should even get married knowing his son would die and his wife would divorce him in the future. He could avoid the heartache if he simply didn't ask his future ex-wife out on a date. He plopped down on a leather easy chair upon returning to his base provided house. He let out a deep breath with the puff of his cheeks. He wondered if Sam and Daniel were also affected by the stone. The telephone on the side table by his chair rang. He lifted the handset. "Hello."
"Please tell me you know me, Jack." Daniel pleaded.
Jack played dumb as a smirk came across his face. "Who are you?"
"I'm a friend of yours. Daniel." he let out a depressing sigh.
"Daniel? Daniel? That nerd who wears the same glasses and has this 1970's porn star mustache going?" he teased.
"You remember!" Daniel exclaimed. "Thank god! You had me going for a minute there."
"Calm down, Daniel." Jack soothed. "You get a hold of Carter?"
"Yes!" he nodded hard. "I called her. She's back to being fifteen and living home with her parents and Mark. My folks are still alive. I stopped the accident that would have killed them today. I guess I changed that. We're both in California." he told him. "I'm going to get myself enrolled in her new school so we can talk and keep in touch."
Jack stated, "I'm stationed in California right now too. I'll see about some leave I got coming. We should all meet up and see if Sam can find a way to fix this and send us back. Hey! Um…do you remember anything about some dude flying around like superman back in the 80's?"
"I don't." he confirmed. "Neither does Sam. But it's all over the news and in the papers. Even my folks are talking about it. Weird."
"That is weird." Jack agreed. "Sam think she has any ideas on what happened to us?"
"The stone somehow sent us all back forty years mentally, Jack." Daniel reported. "Me and Sam are both teenagers now. She thinks we will have to just live our lives all over again and try to not change anything drastic."
"Drastic?" he gave an ironic chuckle. "I was supposed to go on a date this weekend with my future ex-wife. I think I will just cancel it."
Daniel asked, "Why?"
"That way I can just save myself the heartache." he figured.
"But Jack, you got the change to do it all over again. You can stop Charlie from getting that pistol this time." he suggested.
"I could." he pondered and agreed.
"Who are you going to date now, Jack?" he asked. "Sam is fifteen. I don't think Jacob will go for you asking her out."
"That would be awkward." he had to agree. "You think George would remember us?"
"He should!" Daniel agreed. "He should remember 1969."
"Maybe we should contact him?" he wondered.
"I don't see much he can do for us right now, Jack." he replied. "Maybe we just keep that option open for now."
"I suppose." he agreed. He paused still thinking about the man in the red suit. "What do you think this guy in the red suit could be and why don't we remember?"
"Sam might be able to have a hypothesis on that." Daniel figured. "Take your leave and come see me and Sam. We need to regroup and figure out if there is anything we can do to get back to our own time mentally."
"If not we just do it all over again." Jack figured.
Daniel smirked, "But this time we know what is out there and all about Ra."
"That would be an advantage." he agreed. "I'll take leave and meet up with you two."
"Sounds good, Jack." Daniel replied.
Next Day
Daniel met up with Sam at the new high school upon arrival. They stood for a moment looking at one another in the hallway. Both were young teens and both dressed as such. They nearly laugh at one another upon seeing how the other looked as a teenager and the clothing of the past. Daniel grinned and wrapped his arms around Sam and held her tight as she too was in the same situation.
Sam squeezed Daniel in the embrace as he brought comfort and familiarity. She wasn't alone and she had someone she could talk candidly with.
"I guess we get to be teenagers together." Daniel mentioned as he released her.
"At least we're not alone." she pointed out. "Not like I can talk about this with Mark or my parents."
"I know what you mean." he agreed. He then teased, "You were cute at fifteen, Sam."
"You look way better without that mustache." she smirked back.
He touched his lip, "I can grow it back in a few years."
"No," she shook her head. "I thought the beard was bad enough."
"What was wrong with the beard?" he wondered.
She grinned, "It just wasn't you." She motioned with her hand, "Now this is you." She then realized he wore the same glasses as before. "Have you had the same prescription glasses since 1985?"
"I got a new pair each decade." he declared. The fact that he was eligible for a new pair of glasses every two years seemed to have escaped him.
"But they look the same." he told him.
"I get the same frame." he confessed.
As they talked Mark Carter spied the previous hug and some new kid speaking with his sister in the hallway. He walked over. "Hey! Who is the new guy, Sam?"
She grinned, "This is my friend Daniel Jackson. He's in some advanced classes with me."
Daniel had met Mark years ago but had to play up the part. He held out a hand, "Nice to meet you, Mark. Sam has told me all about you."
Mark found it odd that Sam would have told the new kid all about him. He wondered, "How long have you known my sister?"
Daniel couldn't tell him the truth so he looked to Sam.
She excused, "I met Daniel last year in space camp."
"We met last year in space camp." he nodded and spoke to Mark. The excuse sounded good to him and truthful in a way as working in the SGC was pretty close to space camp to his estimation.
"Daniel can speak twenty eight languages and is gifted like me." Sam informed Mark.
Mark grabbed his sister's arm and pulled her aside. "Is this guy your secret boyfriend or something, Sammy?" he whispered in her ear.
"No, he is a very close friend though. Why do you ask?" she wondered.
"I saw you two hugging and you looked close to me." he confessed.
She assured, "He's like a brother." She pulled back away from Mark, rolled her eyes and shook her head annoyed.
Daniel stood amused by Sam's annoyed expression. The bell rang in the hallway.
Mark figured, "I'll see you at lunch. Got to get to class. See ya around, Daniel." he waved as he walked on to the classroom.
Daniel asked, "What was that about?"
"Mark wondered if we were dating. He saw me hug you." she explained irritated.
He chuckled, "I see. Well, if you need a date for a school dance I'm around."
"I'll hold you to that." she told him. She noticed the hallways had about emptied of students. "I guess we should be getting to class now."
"Yeah, back to high school and hallway monitors." he sighed.
"It won't be so bad. We got each other." she reminded him.
He confessed, "High school really sucked for me the first time around."
"Then make it not suck this time around." Sam told him. "We got time. Lots of time."
Lunch at School
Sam and Daniel met for lunch. They stood in the line and made their way through the cafeteria. The food was actually pretty good to Sam as she was accustom to a life of rations in the military during her days off world. Neither had made any new friends and Sam figured she would sit with Mark and Daniel for lunch. As the pair emerged with the trays of food, Sam's eyes settled on a familiar face sitting alone in the cafeteria.
A redheaded fifteen year old girl sat alone at a table. She wore jeans and a white blouse and looked very much like a young Janet Frasier.
Sam spoke to Daniel. "Doesn't that girl look like Janet?"
"She sure does." he agreed.
The pair made their way to the table and looked upon the redheaded girl listing to a walkman. Sam spoke up. "Can we sit here?"
Janet looked up and removed the headphones. She didn't know who the two new faces were but was surprised they ask to sit with her. "Sure!" she agreed.
Sam introduce herself, "I'm Sam Carter and this is my friend, Daniel Jackson. We're both new here."
"Nice to meet you. I'm Janet. Janet Frasier." she was very pleasant to the pair.
Daniel grinned from ear to ear. He wanted to hug her and tell how much he missed her but simply could not for Janet had yet to meet him. He tried to make small talk instead. "What are you listening to, Janet?" he dug into the school pizza and found it tasted much better than anything he ate off world. He then looked upon the pizza, "This is actually pretty good."
Sam grinned, "School pizza was always the best."
Janet stated, "I'm listening to an audio book. It's Shakespeare. Taming of the Shrew. It for a book report."
Sam cocked her head, "Your teacher is letting you use an audio book for a book report." She found it odd as she recalled having to read books for all her reports when she was in high school the first time.
"Mr. Hinkley lets me use it." she told her.
"Mr. Hinkley?" Sam asked.
"My teacher." she told them. She then winced as she found the rest of her special class walk into the cafeteria after a smoking break.
The class was rather small with just a handful of students. The leader, Tony was a dark haired boy with a leather jacket and jeans. His girlfriend, Rhonda hung from his arm. She was a blonde beauty with blue eyes and dressed also in leather and jeans. The pair was followed by a young black man named Karl wearing a green sweat shirt and blue jeans with sneakers. The trio walked by Janet as they made their was to another table.
Tony made a remark to Janet, "Geek."
Janet grew meek by the intimidation.
Sam sat in total disbelief as Janet let the insult slid. She gasped, "You gonna let him get away with that?"
"That's Tony." she informed. "He's the school troublemaker."
Sam rose to her feet rather peeved. She marched herself over to the other table as the trio sat down. She stated, "I don't know who you think are mister but I do believe you owe Janet an apology."
He laughed, "Who the hell are you, dweeb?"
Sam squinted her eyes at him annoyed, "Your worst nightmare if you don't treat my friend with some respect."
"Yeah, right." he laughed at her.
Sam stated, "If you are looking for trouble, you found it."
"Just go back to your table." he waved her off. "Geek." he added.
"We're not finished." Sam assured angry at his attitude and lack of respect towards herself and Janet. She went back to the table angry at the boy.
Janet muttered, "Great! Now I will get picked on even more. Thanks for that."
Daniel asked, "Does that boy harass you, Janet?" He was rather concerned.
"I got placed in a dullard class because I have trouble reading. Mr. H. is trying to help me but Tony just like to pick on me and the class does whatever he does."
"Really?" Daniel pondered to himself. Janet never said much about her life in high school. She always knew how to deal with trouble and insubordinate men. She never took any nonsense from anyone. Not even Jack O'Neill! Yet, she shied away from Tony and his little gang. "Who is Mr. Hinckley?" he asked her.
"The best teacher this school has!" Janet sounded. "He teaches the special ed class. And that is my class." she pointed to the trio laughing it up at a table and mocking Sam.
Daniel crossed his arms and looked at the troubled class. "Maybe I need to be in that class."
Sam traded glances with him as she understood he was about to get himself placed in Janet's class as she was being picked on. She nodded, "Me too."
