Many thanks to those who read and reviewed this fic. I really appreciated it and this gave me inspiration to work on the next chapter and here, things take a turn as the Hope's Peak Academy survivors managed to earn the trust of a hospice caretaker…and now the Hope's Peak Academy survivors would have to find a way to help as they made a rather depressing discovery…
Well then, read on and enjoy!
Ch. 69: Kōrei-sha mondai part 3
The survivors listened intently as the hospice caretaker explained to them how he was left alone when the rest of the staff workers discreetly deserted him when they learned of the news about the zombie pandemic, and instead of informing him about the situation, one by one the staff workers sneaked out and never came back, leaving the caretaker to fend for himself and for the senior citizens who, majority of them, are bedridden.
When the caretaker saw the news on TV of what is happening out there, it was then that he noticed that the staff workers are long gone, and there he realized that they deserted everyone here, and he chose to help the senior citizens in any way he could as he refused to abandon them at a time like this, as he couldn't let them get caught and disemboweled by the zombies should they make their way here, which Fuyuhiko, Hinata and Saihara are not pleased with what they discovered.
"…and that's my current situation at the moment…before you kids came here…"
"No way…"
"Damn those cowards…"
"How could they…"
"I couldn't believe it either…but they showed their true colors…"
"They couldn't just abandon you like that…"
"Surely you could persuade them to change their minds…"
"Why not call them…?"
As the caretaker pointed out, he sent text messages to the staff members and begged them to come back and help him find a way to evacuate the bedridden senior citizens, but his fellow staff members replied and said that he should ditch the senior citizens and escape, or stay there and be eaten by the zombies.
Fuyuhiko, Hinata and Saihara are incensed that the staff workers are treating the senior citizens as expendables, and they hoped that the staff workers would get a Karmic comeuppance for their actions, which the caretaker agreed.
"Hope they get what's coming to them…"
"They're unforgivable…"
"May they receive harsh punishment…"
"Yeah, I agree. My coworkers are such heartless assholes…"
"Those damn cowards."
"They deserve a brutal death…"
"And maybe get caught by the zombies…"
"Well…"
However, once again Chabashira jumped in on the opportunity and uses the fleeing staff members as an excuse to point out that men are cowards and deserved to be sacrificed to the zombies, and said that the boys here would be perfect to feed them to the zombies, which Kyoko face-palm at what Chabashira just said, as Aoi, Maizono and Akamatsu tried to urge Chabashira to calm down and not vent her frustration at the boys here.
"Chabashira-chan…!"
"Calm down…"
"Don't be hasty…"
"But this proves it…men are heartless idiots…and the same goes for the boys here!"
"But not all boys are like that…!"
"She's right!"
"So please calm down and…"
"I say boys are lechers! When it comes to old people the men would dump them like trash bags! That's how men are!"
However, Chabashira's feministic comments hit a nerve which irked Saihara, who told her not to lump him, Hinata, Fuyuhiko and Naegi with the cowardly staff members but the SHSL Aikido Master wouldn't relent, causing a bickering between the two teens.
"Do you really hate men so much?"
"Just telling the truth! You men are all the same!"
"Not all men are like what you're accusing of!"
"It would be better if you get eaten by zombies since the men started this!"
"It was Enoshima who caused this! And mind you it was a girl who started this in the first place!"
"So now you're blaming us girls?!"
"That's not…"
"Yes it is!"
Fuyuhiko face-palmed at the scene while Hinata urged Chabashira and Saihara to calm down as their antics might disturb the resting senior citizens, which promoted Kirigiri, Asahina and Akamatsu to persuade Chabashira that not all men are like that.
"Chabashira…please stop."
"That's right…"
"Please…stop blaming boys…not all of them are like that…"
"…"
"For now we need to figure out how to evacuate everyone here."
"Yeah…"
"That's right…"
"…"
Once calm was restored, the survivors began to assist the caretaker in helping the bedridden senior citizens, and as the Hope's Peak Academy survivors are helping, they couldn't help but feel sad and dismayed, as they learned that none of the senior citizens' relatives came to check on them, as if they virtually abandoned them, and there Fuyuhiko is angered at the selfishness of the people who ditched their elderly relatives here and didn't bothered to check on them if they are okay or not.
Meanwhile Saihara checked on the computer and was able to access the files and printed the names of the relatives of the senior citizens being sent here and there Kyoko asked if he is planning to contact the relatives, which Saihara said that he would see if the relatives are willing to come here and pick up their elderly relatives, so as to see if they are serious about abandoning them to the zombie horde.
"Well…it's worth a shot…"
"You seem confident…"
"Well, I..."
"Just be prepared. It's likely that the relatives are more than willing to…"
"I hope not…"
"You can't be sure…"
"Well…only one way to find out…"
"…"
After printing and listing down the names of the relatives, Saihara began to contact the relatives, and managed to call them, where one by one he asked them if they are going to fetch their elderly relatives, which Fuyuhiko and Hinata eavesdropped, the three boys were incensed as the relatives began offering various alibis, in which it became clear that the relatives are more than willing to abandon them, not caring whether they get killed by the zombie hordes or turned into one should they get bitten.
"I can't…I have an upset stomach…"
"I got a fever…"
"I'm too far away…"
"Right now I'm suffering from cramps…"
"Er…I don't have money for a taxi…"
"Do I know you…?"
"Right now I'm staying in New York..."
"Go feed them to the zombies…it'll save me money from spending a funeral service. Now get lost and FUCK OFF."
As Kyoko remained calm, the three boys were frustrated at how cruel, callous and selfish the relatives are, and now the caretaker would have to shoulder the burden after his fellow staff members ditched him and not caring whether everyone inside the hospice gets killed by the zombies, and there Kyoko calmly, get grimly, stated that the relatives have shown their true colors and that they view their elderly relatives as disposable.
"I already told you that the relatives are more than willing to abandon the senior citizens."
"…"
"…"
"…"
"This is reality…and we have no choice but to accept them."
"…"
"…"
"…"
By then Komaru noticed that a female senior citizen looked very weak, and this made Komaru worried that she called for Aoi, Maizono and Akamatsu, and told them about what she noticed, and there Akamatsu realized that the female senior citizen is just moments away from EXPIRING, and wanting her to pass away without experiencing sadness and depression, Maizono began to sing a lullaby, which somewhat soothed the senior citizen as the song was melodic and made her reminiscence her younger years, and after some five minutes, the senior citizen thanked Maizono, saying that she wished that Maizono herself would have been her granddaughter as she said that her own family abandoned her after placing her here two years ago and has not heard from them ever since, which Maizono, Akamatsu and Aoi stared in sympathy.
"Thank you girls…for trying to lift my spirits…even though I'm about to pass…"
"…"
"…"
"…"
"But…don't worry about…me…you girls…should live on…and lead happy…lives…so…thank…you…"
"…"
"…"
"…"
After that the female senior citizens smiled as she caressed Maizono's cheek before passing away, causing the three girls to shed tears at witnessing someone dying, yet they were emotionally glad that they were able to help her ease her loneliness before passing away, and there Komaru sadly informed the caretaker about what happened, and there he was saddened by this, and yet he faces a situation as the senior citizen has to be buried but doesn't know where due to the zombies out there.
Ohgami and Chabashira then volunteer to help bury the senior citizen which the caretaker nodded in appreciation, as he admitted that he doesn't know how to address this as he is alone at the moment before the Hope's Peak Academy survivors came, which Ohgami and Chabashira said that it is okay, and there Fuyuhiko told the two that he would send some of his henchmen with them to assist and to provide protection in case there are zombies lurking nearby.
After that Ohgami and Chabashira wrapped the dead female senior citizen in a thick blanket and went with the Kuzuryuu henchmen as they go look for a vacant lot to bury the senior citizen, and there the rest resume in providing care for the surviving senior citizens, as they seemingly are unaware of what happened just now.
Makoto was saddened by what happened yet he had to steel himself and he went to Komaru as she was saddened at witnessing the female senior citizen passing away in front of her yet Makoto assured to her that everything will be okay, though Komaru asked what would they do next as she couldn't bear the thought of leaving this hospice behind with the caretaker being the only one left to care for the other senior citizens who are mostly bedridden.
"Don't worry, Komaru. We'll figure out a way."
"Really…?"
"Really."
"But…what about the caretaker…?"
"I'll figure something out."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"…"
Outside, Ikusaba was watching the streets and using a binoculars to see if there are any zombies roaming around, and there Iruma came out and is ready to send a drone so as to get an aerial footage in order to pinpoint the zombies' exact location and distance so that everyone inside the hospice would have time to prepare, which Ikusaba nodded as this would be helpful.
"So that's what you're going to do…?"
"Yup."
"I see."
"And I'm sure we could get a lot of footage."
"Then you better send it out there."
"Right on!"
"Do it now."
"Okay!"
As Iruma nodded she sent the drone flying and there she glanced at her laptop where a camera is installed which is connected to the drone and there she glanced at the laptop camera where the live footage shows that the nearby areas are clear, at least for the time being, which Ikusaba nodded as this means that the hospice is safe for now, yet she tells Iruma to keep monitoring as they cannot relax as of now.
Meanwhile, Fuyuhiko told his henchmen to keep their guard up and let him know if there are any zombies lurking nearby, and strictly instructed them not to directly engage them and head back inside the hospice without making a sound and inform him about it, which the henchmen nodded in acknowledgement.
"Yes sir!"
"Yes sir!"
"Yes sir!"
"Yes sir!"
"Yes sir!"
"Yes sir!"
"Yes sir!"
"Yes sir!"
