Chapter 11
Seras and Hermione arrived on the grounds of Potter Manor and witnessed something that simultaneously amazed and horrified them. In the distance, Harry was in the woods, hovering about fifty feet above the ground, unassisted, and in front of him lay a crater large and deep enough to conceal Hellsing Manor. The inside of it was strewn with rocks, debris and ash, as though he had simply incinerated several cubic acres of earth.
High above him was a pulsing blue ball of energy like a tiny, primordial star, several times larger than Harry himself. With a scream he hurled it towards the ground, and upon impact, to Hermione's eyes, it resembled a scaled down version of the Trinity nuclear weapons test. A flash several times brighter than the sun erupted and washed over them followed by a shockwave that knocked them both to the ground. Curiously they were neither blinded nor burned. After getting to their feet they saw the smoke rising in an enormous column while molten slag rained down around Harry.
"Jesus." Seras said. Harry's gaze shot to her, then instantly he apparated in front of her.
"Are you guys ok? Shit I didn't know you were right there!" Harry said, looking both of them over. Seras and Hermione rushed forward and collected him in an awkward three-way hug.
"I'm sorry." Harry said.
"We're fine, don't worry about us." Hermione said.
"We've got you." Seras said
"Is Integra ok?" Harry asked. Hermione let out a sob into his chest.
"She's fine Harry worry about you right now." Seras said, clinging onto him.
"Come on, let's go inside." Harry said, leading them into his home.
"I'm sorry I left, I just couldn't stay there." Harry said.
"You left a note, Harry." Hermione reminded him. Harry shrugged. They went into the parlor and the team of Potter elves prepared tea and snacks for them while they sat and talked.
"I know you're hurt, Harry..." Hermione said, trailing off not knowing how to continue.
"I am hurt, yes. Mostly though? I was furious. At every turn there's someone there to berate me for trying to make a positive difference in this world." Harry said.
"Why didn't you rip into Integra then?" Seras asked. Harry smiled at her.
"Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing is not only the mother of my first child, but also one of the dearest, and most precious people to me. She was wrong, but truly she can only claim a fraction of the ownership of that little temper tantrum of mine outside. Ever since I started at Hogwarts I've been sticking my neck out and doing what nobody else was willing or able to, and nearly every time it earned me a lecture or some form of punishment. Logically, to be honest, there's really no reason for me to keep trying. I should just grab Seras, make the manor unplottable, and just spend the rest of my life making adorable dhampir babies." Harry said. Hermione nodded sadly.
"But one of the few greasy nuggets of wisdom to slide out of the festering asshole that was Albus Dumbledore's mouth was 'Dark times lie ahead of us and there will be a time when we must choose between what is easy, and what is right'." Harry said.
"Thank you for that wonderful image." Hermione said with a smirk. Harry laughed.
"Are you going to be ok?" Seras asked. Harry stood and helped her up to her feet, collecting her into a hug.
"Of course. I needed to explode and let this out and I've done it." Harry said.
"So Harry..." Hermione said
"I think it's primordial magic. Just power without form. I wasn't thinking or speaking an incantation or even manifesting the will to do anything. I just flew up there and pushed it out of me." Harry said.
"That's amazing! We should get started on another paper." Hermione said, but harry stopped her.
"I really don't think that's a good idea, Hermione. We don't need people out there playing with that." Harry said
"But why?" Hermione asked.
"Believe it or not, I was holding back out there. When you shape magic with willpower, much of its power is lost in the conversion. That's why we start learning the simplest spells in our first year, like lumos." Harry explained.
"But with that knowledge think of what we could discover!" Hermione protested.
"True, but let me ask you something. What is the number one reason that wizards and witches stick to the statute of secrecy instead of breaking it and subjugating the muggle population even now when our numbers worldwide are higher than ever?" Harry asked. Hermione pondered for a moment then realization hit her.
"Of course." Hermione said
"What? Seras asked
"What did that look like after it hit the ground?" Harry asked.
"It looked like a nuclear bomb... oh!" Seras said. Harry nodded.
"Now imagine a million magicals, each of whom can wield tiny nuclear weapons, all deciding Grindlewald might have had a point." Harry continued.
"But you're way more powerful than the average wizard." Hermione reasoned.
"True, but think of this. At the beginning of the last century, Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindlewald both lived on the same planet at the same time. Twenty some-odd years after they hit their peaks, Voldemort was born. Then fifty-ish years after that I was born, and in a few months my first child will be born, and will likely be extremely powerful in their own right." Hermione paled.
"Now imagine some upstart dark wizard with magic nukes decides to make a statement by blowing up a quarter of Madrid, or Prague, or New York City. Remember learning about mutually assured destruction?" Harry asked. Hermione gasped.
"Combined magical nuclear devastation and muggle nuclear devastation. The thought of it wants me to ask you to obliviate the knowledge from my head." Harry said. Harry let go of Seras and helped Hermione up to her feet, hugging her too.
"We should get back. I don't want Integra to suffer." Harry said.
"She was awful to you Harry." Hermione said.
"So were you when we were younger, but I love you just like I love her." Harry said, before taking Seras' shoulder.
"Ready babe?" Harry asked. Seras nodded, and the three apparated out of there.
Integra sit with her head down on her folded arms at her desk sobbing uncontrollably. She had reflected over the recent past and realized she'd been a really shitty friend to the man who had done more for her in her whole life than all others combined. Between snapping at him while she was giving up smoking, and now this he had tolerated way too much abuse from her. That thought gave her pause. Abuse. Something Harry's been a victim of his whole life. Sure he'd never attacked him physically, but verbally yes. What she had done could be construed as abuse.
She didn't have time to dwell on the thought however, as she heard the sound of someone walking into her office without invitation and making their way around to the back of her desk.
"Leave me. Please." Integra said.
"Not gonna happen." Harry said. She lifted her head and looked at him.
"Harry?" She croaked. He looked at her with that damnable smile and those horrible warm green eyes and she dissolved, weeping like a baby, not resisting as he lifted and embraced her.
"I'm so sorry!" Integra said, clinging onto him for dear life.
"I know. It's ok, really." Harry said.
"Not it isn't! I keep doing this to you." Integra said.
"You only do it because you care, but I need you to understand, this silly, insane path that fate has set me on will lead me into danger more often than not. I promise you, despite appearances, I do not go looking to get myself hurt." Harry said, smoothing her hair down with his hand.
"What can I do to make this up to you, Harry? I've never felt this awful about anything." Integra said.
"Just try to remember I'm not suicidal. Even when I'm acting casual about it, I am usually terrified, and looking for any way to get to safety that I can. I need you to trust that I'm not going to run off like a fool and get myself killed for no reason. Besides.." Harry said, lifting his shirt to show only the faintest red spot where the injury had been
"I'm not even sure I can die at this point." Harry said. Integra stared, unconsciously reaching out to touch the injury, when her finger made contact her jerked ot the side and giggled.
"Sorry, ticklish." Harry said. Integra smirked at him
"Noted." Integra said. Harry looked at her warily.
Things got back to normal pretty quickly, Harry had sent mirrors to Viktor, Heinkel and Yumie/Yumiko, and so far no news had arrived. Zorin and Rip were taking turns asking Harry to deposit them at different points in Central and Eastern Europe to reach out to old contacts in hopes of picking up some trace of Millennium, but so far none had been found. Seras was out on one of the few vampire hunts they got called on, when Harry noticed his mirror was vibrating, so he opened it.
"Hi Yumie! How are you doing?" Harry asked. She just looked at him for a minute before responding.
"I am good. It is hard..." Yumie said. Harry nodded.
"I know, love. It'll be hard for a while but you're already doing so much better." Harry said.
"I feel bad." Yumie said.
"Why?" Harry asked.
"I hurt you..." Yumie said.
"Yes you did, but you didn't mean to. You were scared. I've hurt people that cared about me before when I was scared. It's not a good feeling." Harry said.
"I'm... sorry." Yumie said, starting to tear up.
"I know Yumie, you said that and I've already forgiven you. I promise, it's ok." Harry said. She smiled slightly.
"Are you and Yumiko learning to share?" Harry asked. Yumie nodded.
"Yumiko helps when I get scared. Father Anderson and Heinkel have been helping too." Yumie said, the words coming easier as she relaxed.
"That's wonderful! You seem to be doing so much better!" Harry observed. Yumie nodded and blushed.
"Thank you, Harry." Yumie said before abruptly closing her mirror. Harry grinned.
"Who was that?" Sirius asked, walking into Harry's quarters with absolutely no permission.
"I'm going to ward my quarters to dump you on your ass in a landfill if you keep that up." Harry said with a false glare.
"Alright, alright." Sirius said before leaving his room and knocking on the door.
"Fuck off!" Harry said in a pleasant tone with a smile. Sirius laughed and walked back in.
"It was Yumie. She's doing so much better." Harry said. Sirius nodded.
"That's great. Any news about Millennium?" Sirius asked
"No, not yet, and I don't want Yumie or Yumiko mixed up in that shit until they're settled and comfortable." Harry said. Sirius nodded.
"I agree. So I had an idea about the mirrors." Sirius said.
"What's up?" Harry asked, leaning against his wall.
"Right now all of the names we have associated with them are unique. However, what if we find an informant or simply a new friend named Harry, or Ron or any of our other names? We're unlikely to find another Sirius, but still." Sirius observed.
"I'd been thinking about that. The only thing I can come up with is similar to muggle phone numbers." Harry said.
"That's what I'd been thinking, but what kind of system should we use?" Sirius asked.
"I'm not really sure, we should ask Hermione the next time she's free. One idea I had though, if we do go with phone numbers, they should all start with a specific symbol, or perhaps a rune. Just in case the wrong person gets ahold of one, they won't be able to tell it's a communication device." Harry said. Sirius nodded.
"Good call, we'll figure something out. So was that all that brought you to Hellsing Manor?" Harry asked. Sirius shook his head and opened his coat, revealing a Glock 17.
"Pip's teaching me to shoot. Remus too." Sirius said. Harry nodded.
"While we're waiting on news about Millennium, we should be cross training as much as possible. I know they can't do magic, but we can keep teaching them about different spells and wizard fighting methods... Holy shit." Harry said.
"What?" Sirius asked.
"I'm an idiot. Meet me in Diagon." Harry said
"We're not going to the bank again are we?" Sirius asked.
"Stop being a pussy, Sirius." Harry said with a grin before disappearing. Sirius grumbled and followed him. Much to Sirius' delight, instead of Gringotts Harry lead him to Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes. They walked in and the door bell rang, startling George and Angelina who had been kissing passionately behind the counter.
"SIRIUS HELP THEY'RE CORRUPTING ME!" Harry shrieked, hiding behind Sirius who was laughing uncontrollably. Angelina looked horrified but George just grinned proudly.
"Alright, Harry you've had your fun. What do you want?" George asked, laughing. Harry smiled at Angelina.
"Sorry Angie, I just need to take every chance I can to wind up George here." Harry said
"Oh I'm sure we'll get even some time." Angelina said with a grin that Harry was not all that comfortable with.
"So, to business! George, how do you feel about getting into the defense industry?" Harry asked.
"The what now?" George asked.
"Weapons and armor. Mostly the latter. Millennium as we all know has been recruiting wizards in Eastern Europe at the very least, possibly Northern Asia too. The Wild Geese and the Hellsing Regulars will be at the forefront of future efforts to defeat them, and as they're muggles they have little defense against magic. During the war we weaponized a bunch of your products, I was wondering if you'd be willing to lend your expertise to the upcoming war effort." Harry said. George scratched his chin.
"I mean, yeah I'd be on board, but I'm definitely not going to agree to anything without Fred. What do you think, love?" George asked.
"Why are you asking me?" Angelina asked. George grinned at her.
"I'm pretty sure we both know why." George said with a fond smile.
"Ooooh, something you want to tell us George?" Harry asked with a grin. Angelina blushed and lifted her hand showing off a tasteful gold-banded engagement ring.
"Congratulations! Oh god Has Molly stopped crying yet?" Harry asked.
"She doesn't know yet. It's uh.. pretty new." George said.
"He proposed right before you got here." Angelina said, beaming.
"Do I need to obliviate you, captain blabbermouth?" Harry asked Sirius.
"I'm not a blabbermouth at all." Sirius said with a grin that suggested otherwise.
"I'll be good." Sirius said, before walking over and hugging George then Angelina.
"Congratulations to both of you." Sirius said. Harry repeated the gesture and then started going over a few preliminary ideas.
