A/N: Before we get to the chapter, I've read some interesting comments and would like to address them.
Archangel Xireon Chaos God: While that is an excellent idea, I already have something in mind for Lisanna once we get to the Tartaros Arc. It would be the reason why Madeline was a Fullbringer in the first place.
Vertaq: I'm sorry if the story isn't you like but I do appreciate the encouragement. So, thank you.
Farhan Nugraha: Yes. Yukino and Yuzu will be both using Leiden Handt. However, only Yuzu would have a Vollstanding since she had more training while Yukino was just starting.
Warmachine375: HOLY CRAP! I can't believe you're reading my story. I am such a fan of Fairy's Sin and I wish you would continue it. Anyways, Ichigo's spiritual pressure only covered Fiore. However, those characters you mentioned will be aware of his presence from here on out. As for Acnologia, I don't recall him having any ability to reap the souls of dragons. So, I'll go with him just being immune to magic since it's the most consistent power he had. In regards to Wraith, that's still up in the air if I continue the story after the Alvarez Invasion Arc. I would like to thank you for offering assistance in making some OCs.
tarifullbuster: I know. It just seemed cool that I decided to stick with it.
With that out of the way, here is the chapter.
Chapter 26: Everything in the Rain
When Fairy Tail came back from Crocus, the people of Magnolia expected a raucous contingent of wizards ready for a week-long party. The mayor and the citizens heard of their local guild's victory and, to show their appreciation, had renovated the old guildhall. They all pitched in to help fix Fairy Tail's original base, which should have moved its members to tears. However, when the townsfolk caught a glimpse of the wizards, they were surprised to see not joyous expressions but sad, almost mourning faces.
Curious, the town mayor asked what had caused such a gloomy atmosphere and was shocked to find out the tragedy that had occurred during the Grand Magic Games. Makarov explained that although they were victorious, a calamity struck during the final day. It saw the deaths of countless knights, mages, and, more importantly, someone precious to two of their members. The town leader and the citizens understood this and let the guild go on their way to grieve their loss.
The moment they entered their old guildhall, the Makarov ordered some members to start moving their stuff from the makeshift headquarters at the edge of town back to Magnolia. Most quickly volunteered while the others helped in cleaning up the place. It didn't take long, and everyone did their own thing when they finished.
The sky rumbled as streaks of lightning crackled the sky. The clouds gathered, covering the blue heavens in a grey blanket. A single drop fell, and another, until the town of Magnolia was pelted by a downpour that further saddened the present ambiance.
Lucy wanted to go out on a quest today. With their win in the recent tournament, various jobs have begun piling up on the request board. With the rain putting a damper on her mood, the Celestial mage opted to stay in the guildhall and watch as the skies released the waters it had gathered.
"It feels like the heavens are crying," the blonde thought as cold air fogged up the window next to her. Looking back on all the things that happened, their win felt hollow. They regained their reputation. They silenced their critics. However, everyone would give it up to bring back what was taken away.
Loss.
A word every one of them was familiar with, and right now, two of her friends are under its cruel mercy.
"I hope they're okay." Lucy was referring to Natsu and Lisanna.
Ever since they arrived, she stellar wizard hasn't seen the two in the guildhall. It was understandable, though. Madeline was this sudden blessing that fell into their hands and filled their hearts with happiness unlike any other. Sadly, just as quickly as the Fullbringer came into their lives, she was taken away.
Lucy has never seen Natsu and Lisanna cry so much before. The former was always loud, boisterous, and eager to pick a fight for the Hell of it. The latter was mild-mannered, kind, and always smiling despite the circumstance. It was hard seeing them so depressed, so distraught…
So broken.
Standing up, Lucy went to the bar counter. Behind that was Mirajane wiping some mugs, but she didn't have that usual cheery smile like she always does. The blond-haired person took a stool to sit down on and asked the oldest Strauss.
"Mira?"
"Yes, Lucy?"
"Where are Natsu and Lisanna?"
The white-haired beauty stopped, her face falling into sorrow. Like her sister, she and Elfman were also affected by Madeline's death. Even Happy wasn't…happy. While she opted to serve the guildmembers drinks to get her mind off that painful memory, her younger brother went out of town earlier for a job. As for the blue cat, he was sitting behind the counter with his fish barely touched.
Lucy noted the silence from the oldest sibling and thought she might've said something wrong. "Mira," the Celestial mage said softly, "I'm sorry if I said something wrong."
Mirajane reassured her with a smile. "It's alright, Lucy. It's just…difficult, you know?"
"About Madeline?"
"Yeah." Silence followed after Mira's reply. While it's true that her thoughts revolved around her niece, it was more about the young Dragneel's influence on them, especially on Lisanna. "I've never seen my sister so hurt before."
"Maddie really had an effect on her," remarked the blonde mage.
"More than you think," the demoness answered. "I never told you this, nor anyone, but Lisanna would always choose the happiness of others over hers."
Lucy perked up when she heard what Mira said. She got interested and wondered where this was going.
"When my sister told us of her life in Edolas, she also revealed that given a chance to stay or come home, she'd remain in that world because she didn't want to hurt that world's version of Elfman and me."
Lucy's eyes widened from that revelation. Lisanna would go that far? The Celestial wizard's opinion of the youngest Strauss was already high, but this? It just made the blonde respect her even more.
"There's one more thing, Lucy." Gaining the former Heartfilia heir' attention, Mirajane revealed something startling to the mage. "She was actually jealous of you."
"EH!?" That was indeed a surprise for the stellar spirit mage. "What do you mean?"
"You and Natsu," answered the oldest Strauss. "Lisanna was jealous that you're so close to Natsu."
Lucy was at a loss for words. Sure, she and Natsu were close, but their relationship was more friends than anything else. She never knew that being close to the salmon-haired mage was hurting one of her friends. All that made her feel guilty.
Seeing the Heartfilia mood change, Mirajane quickly comforted her. "Don't feel bad about yourself, Lucy. Lisanna doesn't blame you or anyone. In fact, she would be glad if you and Natsu became a thing as long as you made him happy."
"But I don't see Natsu that way," Lucy defended.
"I know, but as I said, Lisanna would put other people's happiness before hers, and if Natsu was happy with you, then she'll be happy too, even if it breaks her."
"Lisanna…" was all the blonde stellar wizard could utter.
"I'm sure that with all I've said, you know how Lisanna feels about him."
It was obvious. Lisanna loves Natsu. Whether during her time in Edolas or earlier, the tight bond she shared with the son of Igneel grew into something more. If she were being honest, Lucy thought it was beautiful. That said, the blonde-haired teen couldn't help but admire the youngest Strauss' willingness to sacrifice her happiness for the sake of others.
"Lisanna truly is the kindest soul," the Celestial mage thought, and seeing such a soul so shattered was disheartening.
"That's where Madeline comes in." Mira continued telling Lucy her thoughts. She remembered how attached her sister was to the young time traveler. "The little girl made us all happy. Elfman, Happy, myself, and most of all, Natsu and Lisanna. I've never seen those two smile like that before. They were so defensive of her, so protective.
"Those two always had that special bond with each other. It's like they just clicked when they first met. When Lisanna vanished, we were devastated. Natsu tried to push through it, and he did. However, I could see in his eyes that a part of him felt hollow. As for my sister, I'm sure she blamed herself for what happened. She doesn't have the heart to condemn other people, so she takes it all to herself.
"Separated by time and space, that bond they shared never faded, and once they reunited, that rift slowly began to heal. When Maddie came into their lives, it strengthened even more. Suffice to say, Madeline was the bond they shared given form and life." Mirajane's smile faded. "Then she was taken away."
Lucy didn't say anything. She kept listening to the barmaid while pondering the turmoil Lisanna and Natsu were going through.
"For Natsu, Maddie's death would be worse than Igneel abandoning him. She was his daughter, and no parent would want to see their daughter die. In Lisanna's case, she'll blame herself for being unable to save Maddie."
Mira finally finished, and it left Lucy tearful. The loss of a loved one was something they all shared. The blonde was distraught when she learned of her father's death during their seven-year disappearance. Lucy wished to have spent more time with her father to mend their broken relationship. She felt more depressed, especially when he tried to make up for the years of neglect she had to endure. However, it can't compare to the anguish Natsu and Lisanna are experiencing now.
Just like what Mirajane described, Madeline was the bond between Natsu and Lisanna given life, and she died in their arms. Nothing is more painful for parents than seeing the last moments of their children before they vanish into nothingness. What's more, they were powerless to do anything.
"Mira, can I do anything to help?" Lucy asked the white-haired mage. Natsu and Lisanna were her friends; they needed someone to lean on during this challenging time.
The barmaid smiled, appreciating the concern Lucy was showing to her sister and the fire mage. "Be a friend to them," answered Mirajane. "Be there for them because all we have is each other in times of hardship."
The door to the guild suddenly opened. Mira and Lucy turned to see who it was and found Natsu all wet. The fire mage wasn't his usual self. His eyes were downcast, and the aura he gave off was sullen. He made his way to the bar counter where the two girls were chatting.
"Mira, have you seen Lisanna?" asked the dragon slayer.
"I'm sorry, Natsu," the barmaid apologized. "I haven't seen her since the rain started. In fact, she hasn't been in our house since we arrived in Magnolia."
The son of Igneel thought for a moment. "Thanks, Mira," said Natsu, still looking dejected. "I think I know where she is."
"Natsu?"
The pinkette's eyes landed on the little Exceed. Happy manifested his wings and floated towards him. "What is it, little buddy?"
"Please, find Lisanna," begged the cat. "Find Mama."
A gentle smile graced Natsu's face. He held a hand and placed it on the feline's head, ruffling his fur. "I will, Happy." With that, he left in search of his better half.
Mira watched as Natsu disappeared into the rain. She recalled something from the masters that needed her and the blonde's attendance. "Come on, Lucy. Masters Makarov and Mavis wanted to discuss something with us along with Ichigo and the other S-class wizards."
"Eh?" Lucy was perplexed. "Why am I included?"
"I'm not sure. My guess is that you and Loke could enlighten us like last time when we had that meeting Ichigo."
"I see." Seeing nothing wrong with her reasoning, Lucy got off her seat and followed Mirajane to the guildmaster's office.
Orihime ushered in her new daughter into their home. The house was modest, enough for a family of five with two extra bedrooms for guests plus an expansive room for leisurely activities. It was found near the edge of town, which meant that just behind it was a field wide enough for Kazui to play in and for the matriarch to tend some plants.
"Come in, sweetie," said the Fullbringer. "Don't be shy."
"Yeah," the young hybrid agreed. "Come on! Let me show you to your room!"
Kazui grabbed Yukino's hand and dragged her upstairs. The girl nearly tumbled from her brother's sudden pull.
"Kazui, be careful," Yuzu cautioned.
"Remember, it's the door to the right at the far end," Karin reminded her nephew.
"I will!" replied the eager boy as he continued dragging the silver-haired stellar mage into her new bedroom.
"Kazui, slow down!" begged Yukino, but it fell on deaf, keen ears.
The three adults watched as the brother and sister disappeared into the second floor. They looked at each other and, coincidentally, had the same idea.
"Who's hungry?" Orihime asked with a smile.
"I'm up for some food," Karin shrugged. "After all that crap in the games, it's nice to have a little snack and some RNR before we go on some quests."
"I'll help, Orihime," offered the last Quincy. "Let me just change my outfit for something more comfortable."
"Sure thing," Karin and Orihime said as Yuzu ascended the stairs and entered her room.
"By the way," the reaper twin turned to her sister-in-law, "…have you seen Ichigo?"
"He's with Master Makarov," answered the family matriarch. "He said there were some things the master wanted to discuss with him and the S-Class guild mages."
Karin looked away, her eyes narrowing when a possible reason came to her. "I have a pretty good idea as to what their topic might be."
"So do I," Orihime said with a nod.
"Do you think he'll tell them?"
Orihime sighed, unsure of the possible outcome of that discussion. "I think he will. It's their reaction that I'm concerned about."
"I get you," Karin nodded. "It's hard to comprehend where Ichigo would end up when he finally lives a full life."
"I know." The Fullbringer heard footsteps descend from upstairs and found Kazui smiling after showing Yukino their house. "How'd you like your new room?"
If the girl had to be honest, it was more spacious than she expected. Sure, it was only a bed and a nightstand for now, but even if she decorated the whole place, she'd still have enough room for a large drawer. Yukino smiled and said, "It's wonderful."
"I'm glad you like it, sweetie," Orihime replied. She then noticed Yuzu all dressed in her casual clothes with an apron. "Why don't you go to the lounge and play board games, Kazui. Or you can teach Yukino to play Karin's drum set."
The middle Kurosaki heard this and quickly yelled, "Nobody touches my drums without asking for my permission." However, her nephew was already smacking away. At the same time, Yukino picked up the closest instrument next to her, a bass guitar. "Ugh… never mind." Karin then looked to her sister-in-law and posed an important question. "You're not going to tell them, are you?"
Yuzu looked at Orihime and saw she was in a dilemma. "Karin…" she tried to speak but was cut off.
"When they're ready," answered the family matriarch. "I will tell them, but only when they're old enough to understand."
Yuzu and Karin looked at each other before returning their gaze to Orihime. They understood where the mother was coming from. If she revealed it to Yukino and Kazui, who knows how they'll react. Any later, and it might be too late.
"We get where you're coming from, Orihime," Yuzu told. "It's your choice when you'll tell Yukino and Kazui about our brother's eventual fate."
"…And we respect that," Karin added. "I hope they take it well when we tell them."
"I hope so, too." Orihime stared at her children as they enjoyed themselves in the lounge. She could hear the downpour outside rattling the roof with each drop it fell. The gloomy atmosphere brought her mind into a series of thoughts on her loved ones and the current weather Magnolia was experiencing.
The rain always had a special connection to the Kurosaki family. It was under the pouring afternoon that a noble Soul Reaper captain and a noble Quincy had their fateful encounter. It was under the rainfall when said Quincy sacrificed her life to save her son. Finally, it was under the heavy drizzle that the same boy learned about his true heritage.
Right now, Orihime's sentiment from the rain was a sense of melancholy, loneliness, longing, and to her curiosity…cleansing. She did not know what to make of these feelings. However, the mother of two was sure that secrets would be washed away and warmth will be sought by those consumed by grief.
Makarov and Mavis were unsettled. That woman who came from Hell's gate to retrieve the sinful Rogue had left what could be considered a warning to the guild's resident death god.
"Remember, Ichigo. The price for power…is eternal damnation."
What did she mean by that? That question was shared not just by the two masters of Fairy Tail but also among its prominent members. It left the two guild leaders guessing the intent behind the message, which made them concerned for Ichigo. For that reason, they called for a meeting between the Kurosaki patriarch and certain mages in the guild that could give insight into what was to be discussed.
The first to arrive was Mirajane and Lucy, followed by Erza. The Celestial wizard summoned Loke into the office since his knowledge of different dimensions could be helpful. The lion spirit sat beside his master on a comfortable sofa near the guildmaster's desk where Makarov and Mavis stood. The oldest Strauss sat next to Erza while Laxus, who came a little later, found a chair near a wooden pillar. Gildarts was absent since he was currently on a quest somewhere near the boundary of Ishgar and Guiltina. Finally, Ichigo entered, placed his twin swords next to a desk, and sat beside the two female S-class mages. With everyone of importance present, it was time to get this session underway.
"Before we get to our topic, do any of you know where Natsu and Lisanna are?" Makarov began with a question, and at once, he could see a reaction from Mirajane and Lucy.
The two wizards gripped their skirts tightly. They were just talking about the two before they came into the guildmaster's office, and suffice to say, it left the blonde sympathetic to the emotional turmoil of the grieving parents.
"To be honest, I don't know where Lisanna is," Mirajane answered. "I haven't seen her since we got back from Crocus. She's still depressed after what happened to Maddie." The mention of her precious niece caused a tear to roll down her cheek.
"Natsu did come by to the guild hall," Lucy added. "He was asking for Lisanna, and when we told him we didn't know where she was, he seemed to have an idea where she might be."
"I hope she's okay," Mavis said. Her worry was shared by all who were present. "If it's true that Natsu knows where Lisanna is, then I suggest leaving them alone for now."
The wizards plus Ichigo looked at the ghost curiously.
Mavis continued, "As much as we want to help, the truth is that they need each other more than they need us."
"However, it doesn't mean we won't reach out if they need us," Makarov interjected, to which they all agreed. "After all, a family should help one another in trying times like these."
A unanimous hum of concurrence was shared by the Fairy Tail members. They'll be there for them, no matter what happens.
"With that settled, let's get into the heart of the matter." Makarov's eyes met with Ichigo's. "It wasn't long ago that the magic community was made aware of the existence of Hell. The Grand Magic Games also exposed that beings like yourself walk among the populace. No doubt this will send ripples throughout Earthland."
"…And as I said," Ichigo answered. "I'm ready to face the coming ramifications."
"I know, Ichigo. However, I am curious about what kind of beings exist in Hell." Makarov turned to the leader of the Zodiacs and asked, "Do you have any idea, Loke?"
"Not much," answered the lion spirit. "What I know is mostly surface-level knowledge."
"Such as…?" Mavis probed.
"It was one of the original dimensions to exist. It was said that Hell is millions of years older than the Celestial realm." Except for Ichigo, that fact caught everyone by surprise. "Also, there's speculation that Hell is divided into different circles. The lowest is where the greatest sinners are locked up."
"That's scary," Lucy muttered, slightly trembling after her spirit divulged such information. Loke saw this and quickly took hold of the blonde's hand, squeezing it lightly and easing her nerves.
Erza joined in the conversation and asked, "Madeline had mentioned beings such as the Togabito and Ghouls. I presume they are the sinners meant to be punished?"
"Correct," Ichigo answered this time since he had more knowledge of the subject. "Togabito are souls sent to Hell that gained power. The lower you get, the more powerful you become. On the other hand, Ghouls are hollows corrupted by Hell's energy. It's easy to spot one since the hollow hole on their bodies become rings."
"So, it affects hollow energy," commented the redhead. "Does that mean you are affected since you possess hollow powers yourself?"
"It does," Ichigo admitted. "It enhanced my hollow powers to the point that I was a threat to the dimension itself. Do you recall when Yuzu talked about the time she was kidnapped?"
The wizards did, and it was clear the experience shook the Quincy.
"When I lost control and took on a similar transformation as Kazui back at Crocus, I almost destroyed an entire circle with my Cero Gigantes." Everyone's eyes almost fell off when Ichigo revealed that feat. "…And I kind of busted the gate into chunks from my rampage."
"Seriously, dude," Laxus interjected, "…what can't you do?"
"I was pressed for time, okay?" Ichigo defended. "Besides, the spiritual energy inside Hell was affecting my powers and mind. What happened to me could also happen to Mira if she was somehow exposed to its energies."
"It could?" questioned Mirajane.
"There is a possibility," Mavis considered. Her genius mind is now at work. "Demons do get stronger in the presence of negative powers." She then looked to the eldest Take-Over sibling. "It may give you untold strength, but best be careful when you somehow find yourself exposed to it, Mira."
"I will, First Master."
"Now, with that settled, I'd like to ask Ichigo who that woman that took the future version of Rogue is."
All attention was now focused on Ichigo. If they were being honest, that woman made their skin crawl. That innocent, motherly face that morphed into a demented smile gave them the impression that there was something sinister within that lady.
"Her name was Retsu Unohana," Ichigo began answering. "She was once the captain of the Court Guards' 4th Division, a regiment focusing more on healing and medical aid than frontline combat. She was the best healer in Soul Society ever had." A soft smile could be seen forming on the reaper's face. He remembered how kind and understanding the woman was when he still lived in his original world. "Every Soul Reaper in the Court Guard looked up to her as a mother figure. Even I saw her as a surrogate parent, and Orihime viewed her as a role model."
"You make it seem like you're fond of this woman," Mavis commented, noticing the praise Ichigo was giving this Unohana character. "Not only that, but you also paint her as this angelic figure that could do no wrong."
"You have no idea," Ichigo expressed. "Although, she can be pretty terrifying when angry." The adult death god shivered, recalling a memory of the deceased captain and her sweet yet creepy smile. It suddenly got him thinking; the guild's resident demoness acted the same way. "Think of Mirajane but with black hair, a face of a woman in her early thirties and around fifteen hundred to two thousand years old."
Lucy was drinking while she listened to Ichigo and almost spat out said drink when she heard the age of Retsu Unohana. "Did you just say two thousand years old!?" Even the others were amazed at how ancient the former captain actually was.
However, one question about the ancient captain needed to be addressed.
"If she's such a good person," Laxus began questioning, "…then why is she in Hell?"
That fact actually escaped their attention. The way Ichigo described the former captain was with reverence and respect. It was so suspicious that someone viewed with such positivity is currently existing in Hell.
Ichigo sighed. The answer to that question was complicated, to say the least. It didn't just involve Rest Unohana but every captain who had died and any powerful spiritual being.
"Reī."
"Huh?" the wizards sounded.
"Reī or 'Spiritual Class' was an old measure of someone's spiritual energy density. It's divided into 20 classes. The lowest being unseated Soul Reapers while the highest ranging from lieutenant to captain-class."
"Why did you bring this up, Ichigo?" Lucy asked, wondering where the death god was going with this. "What does this 'reī' have to do with that Unohana woman?"
"Everything, Lucy," Ichigo answered. "What I said doesn't just concern Captain Unohana but every powerful being within the supernatural world…including myself."
There was some hesitance in Ichigo's voice. Makarov and Mavis noticed this and wondered what could make him hesitant.
"You see," Ichigo continued, "I'm only telling you what my mentor had in his research notes. Based on what he gathered, when a spiritual entity dies, its body disperses into reishi that assimilates into the spiritual environment. There's a catch, however. Only reishi with a reī density of four and below can be absorbed naturally into the spiritual environment. Anything higher needs intervention."
"So, what do they do to get that dense reishi to assimilate with the surroundings of the spiritual realm?" Mirajane inquired.
"A special ceremony needs to be conducted called the Konsō Reisai of the 'Soul Burial Ceremony.' It's performed twelve years after the funeral rites of a captain-class Soul Reaper who died in battle. Captains and lieutenants capture a hollow and purify it before the deceased captain's grave. The ritual is a manual way of assimilating the highly-dense spiritual energy into the spiritual environment."
"Well, that was complicated." Laxus adjusted himself on his seat before going back to question Ichigo. "That said, I'm getting the feeling that there's more to it than that," the lightning mage remarked suspiciously.
"I agree," Loke spoke. "I've lived long enough to know that there's more than what meets the eye when it comes to the spiritual realm."
Ichigo leaned forward, rested his elbows on his knees, and stared at his guildmates sternly. "What I'm about to tell you must not get out of this room, understood? Nobody but us should know about this and never divulge this information to anyone, especially to Kazui and Yukino."
The wizards all looked at each other. If Ichigo was serious about keeping this a secret, it's best to heed it.
The Kurosaki finally explained. "The Konsō Reisai doesn't actually help assimilate high-grade reishi into the environment."
"What?" Erza questioned. "So, what does the ritual serve then?"
"Reishi of Class 3 and above can't be absorbed into the spiritual realm. It's just too thick and dense. If it was left unattended, major consequences could affect the cycle of reincarnation. With that said, the true purpose of the ritual is to send that highly potent spiritual energy into a dimension that can actually hold it." He paused, preparing himself for the reactions he'll be receiving. "…And there's only one place that can contain such dense reishi."
Mavis remembered the words of Unohana back at Crocus. "Wait!" she exclaimed. "You don't mean…?"
Loke was next, standing up in surprise after realizing what Ichigo said. "It can't be!?"
"Loke?" Lucy saw the horror in her spirit's eyes. The truth must be heavy if the leader of the Zodiacs looked at Ichigo with a horrified expression.
"Ichigo," Makarov stared at the reaper. His expression was calm, but it gave a feeling of unease. "I…don't know how to make of this."
Mira was about to ask when it dawned on her, causing her sapphire-blue eyes to widen and her hands to move up to cover her mouth.
Erza just paled when she finally realized the true purpose of the Konsō Reisai. She felt horrified and disgusted.
"Damn," Laxus muttered, whipping cold sweat from his forehead. "That's just messed up."
"I don't understand. Where could these souls be sent if their reishi is so dense?" Lucy asked the others. It was starting to worry her when these powerful wizards looked so distressed. "Wait a minute. That Unohana lady was a captain, meaning her reī density is Class 3 and above. If that's the case, then…." The truth finally came to her, and the reaction she showed was immediate. She paled. Her eyes widened as her pupils dilated. She began shaking as the dark truth of the spiritual world was revealed to her.
"You finally realized, haven't you, Lucy?" Ichigo said to the Celestial wizard.
"I-Ichigo," the blonde stammered. "P-Please don't t-tell me…."
"It's true, Lucy. Those dense souls are cast into the one place in all of reality that could hold it: Hell."
To the reaper, Lucy was one of the few mages attuned to the spiritual world. For her to discover such a dark truth made Ichigo sympathetic. She respected and viewed spirits, regardless of where they come from, to be sacred. To hear such a tragic fate to some was just too much for her.
"It's not fair," Lucy mumbled. "It's not–" Lucy stared at Ichigo wide-eyed. Another sinister truth just came to her. "I-Ichigo," she hesitantly called. "H-How dense is your spiritual energy?"
"One," was Ichigo's answer. "My reī density is Class 1."
"B-But that means…."
"That's right, Lucy. When I die, I'm going to Hell."
Silence reigned free as the present wizards of Fairy Tail tried to grasp what they had just heard. It was a lot to take in. This was not how they envisioned this meeting would turn out. To think of such a horrid fate would befall one of their members. The spirit world is full of dark and unsavory secrets not meant for everyone. What they learned…wasn't even the darkest of it.
"It's not right."
They all heard Lucy mumble. There were fits of sobs in between her words.
"You're a good person, Ichigo," Lucy spoke. Tears were pooling in the corner of her eyes. "Even if you just came to the guild, you were like the big brother to everyone with how you encouraged and protected us. So, why? Why do you have to be condemned to Hell when you don't deserve it?"
Lucy wasn't the only one who felt this way. Mirajane and Erza were on the verge of tears, though the latter was taking it better than the oldest Strauss sibling. Laxus and Makarov remained silent, unable to find the words to describe their sympathy for the reaper. Mavis was also quiet, silently fighting back the tears. Loke was in deep thought. This was the first time the Celestial spirit heard of this. It was both shocking and appalling. He will have to consult with the Celestial Spirit King about this.
Ichigo let out a breath. The reaper was glad these people cared about him, but this was the truth. He then noticed something small flying across the room; he wasn't the only one. The Kurosaki patriarch reached out a hand and let the tiny creature perch on one of his fingers.
"Lucy, everyone," Ichigo called and showed the tiny creature on his finger. It was a black butterfly. "Do you know what this is?"
"No," the blonde answered for her and the rest.
"Jigokuchō, otherwise known as 'Hell Butterflies.'" Ichigo then let the raven-colored insect fly around the office, letting the others stare at it with a sense of foreboding. "Hell is closer than you think…and is drawn to powerful people. These innocent-looking creatures are proof of that. That's why they have 'Hell' in their name.
Ichigo closed his eyes and sighed. When he opened them, he looked at his guildmates with a soft, empathetic expression. "It's not about if I deserve it or not. It's about the price I'm willing to pay to protect those I care for." He then looked at Erza, recalling the short conversation during the Grand Magic Games. "Protecting is all about sacrifice, and we need the strength to do that. However, power has a price, and I'm willing to pay regardless of how heavy it might be. I've already sacrificed so much, but I'm eager to give even more if it guarantees the safety of everyone I care about. Even if being sent to Hell is the price, I'll do it a thousand times.
"That is my resolve. For everyone…I'll make that ultimate sacrifice."
Natsu pushed a branch to the side, ruffling its leaves and scattering the droplets it had gathered. The heavy rain enveloped the dreary forest in its grey blanket. However, he still pushed forward, determined to find the person he was searching for.
It had been years since the son of Igneel went to that place. Hidden within this multitude of trees was a sanctuary for him and his childhood friend filled with beautiful memories…and solemn reminders.
As he brushed off the last branch, Natsu finally reached the clearing and found what he was looking for. There, facing where the sunset would be, was a hut made of straw, twigs, leaves, and other materials found in the forest. It was years since he and Lisanna built this little structure. When the fire mage thought she had died, he took care of their second home in memory of her.
Natsu approached the hut, hoping that she was there. When he looked inside, he saw Lisanna hugging her knees, soaking wet, and her back facing the entrance. "Lisanna?" he called. The white-haired teen turned her head and revealed red, puffy eyes with pooling tears and cheeks stained with despair. The son of Igneel felt his heart break upon seeing such a kind face stricken by sadness.
Lisanna looked away and kept silent as Natsu entered the little shed and gently embraced the grieving woman from behind. He just sat there, not saying anything but hugging the youngest of the siblings while keeping her warm with his heat.
"Maddie…"
Natsu heard her whisper.
"Come back. Mama misses you."
Natsu's hold on the woman grew tighter. He could feel hot tears gathering on the edge of his eyes, recalling their daughter's final moments.
It hurts. It hurts so much more than when Natsu was abandoned or when Lisanna was taken away from her siblings. This was a different level of pain that they had never felt before. It's as if a piece of their soul was ripped from their being. Then, those pieces were shattered right before their eyes. It was more than anyone should bear.
The silence continued until Lisanna suddenly turned, now facing the equally mournful dragon slayer. However, there was something different in the way she looked at him. Her red, tear-ridden eyes held the same sadness he also felt, and yet, underneath that was a much deeper…primal emotion. Natsu didn't know what it was but he could see Lisanna's blue eyes darkened by that.
"Lisanna?" he asked, concerned. "Wha–"
The son of Igneel was caught by surprise when the white-haired girl pounced on him like a predator that just found its prey. Natsu was left in shock from the sudden action. He found himself being straddled by the Take-Over mage while her hands bound his wrists to the bedding of hay. They stared at each other's eyes; onyx-colored ones eliciting confusion while a sapphire-tinted pair expressed something else.
Natsu didn't know what was happening. This behavior wasn't something Lisanna was known for. To just suddenly tackle and pin him to the ground, wasn't like her. What the dragon slayer didn't know was the white-haired girl's mind was filled with various emotions, all fighting for control of her already damaged mental state until one trumped everything else and was now driving her body.
Desire.
The emotion of wanting. This was what ran on Lisanna's mind as she gazed at the befuddled pinkette below her. What desires could be influencing her right now, you may ask? There were only two things:
Bringing Madeline to the world; and
Seizing the man she loved.
Without warning, the youngest Strauss leaned and captured Natsu's lips with her own. The dragon slayer couldn't help but widen his eyes as Lisanna pressed her lips deeper into his. The girl was putting every bit of strength into the intimate gesture that the fire mage can't pry himself free. It's as if the girl had grown a hundred times stronger in ten seconds.
Luckily, Lisanna managed to snap herself aware and quickly disengaged from the kiss. Natsu at once took a deep breath after being deprived of valuable air even for just that few moments. When he glanced at the woman on top of him, the Take-Over mage had a look of mortification.
"I-I'm so s-sorry, Natsu," said Lisanna while trembling. "I don't know w-what came over me."
Natsu didn't answer. He was still frozen in shock after what the youngest Strauss had done.
Seeing as Natsu didn't say anything, Lisanna felt her heart shatter. "What have I done?" she asked herself. Feeling ashamed of her actions, the girl quickly got off of her best friend and made a break for the entrance. She was so close to the exit when a firm grip came to her wrist.
Natsu didn't know what was happening. He didn't know why Lisanna kissed him or why she was acting this way. Nonetheless, he had to do something. She was hurting and he couldn't bear to see her in this state. The dragon slayer pulled his better half close to him, enveloping the now startled girl in a hug again.
For the girl in question, it left her surprised. Lisanna thought Natsu would've been disgusted with her. Instead, he was holding her close like she was his lifeline.
"Lisanna," the fire mage whispered. "Don't leave. I've been looking for you all day."
The young Strauss could only respond with a quiet nod before the two of them fell into silence once more. They stayed like that for another moment, simply savoring each other's warmth as the rain continued to pour its somber waters.
While Lisanna kept herself from talking in fear of breaking the tranquil atmosphere within their little shelter, Natsu was in deep thought. He was still questioning why the girl in his arms had done what she did. The son of Igneel didn't want to force her to answer him considering her already fragile emotional state…but he had to know. At least, if the Take-Over mage wasn't willing, then he would wait until she was ready.
"Lisanna," Natsu gently called her name. "Can I ask you something?"
The youngest Strauss slowly turned her head to face the man behind her. "Y-Yeah?" she meekly replied.
A bit of red made its way to Natsu's face, showing his embarrassment at the whole thing. "Why did…why did you kiss me?"
Lisanna hung her head down, letting her hair cast shadows upon her eyes. Natsu began panicking, thinking that he just stepped on a land mine. "I'm so sorry," he quickly apologized. "You don't have to answer if you're–"
"Because I love you…"
It was a whisper; barely audible to anyone but Natsu. However, the dragon slayer was so shocked at the answer that he needed to hear it again to make sure. "W-What…?" stammered the fire mage.
Lisanna finally lifted her head and turned to stare at Natsu. Her eyes were full of tears but she had a smile only meant for the man she loved. In that instance, she was laying her heart bear for the dragon slayer to see.
"I love you, Natsu," the white-haired wizard said with utmost sincerity. "Even since we were young, I've had these feelings for you. The times when we raised Happy and played like real parents were some of my fondest memories because you were there. Even when I was taken away to Edolas, I never stopped loving you and hoped that one day, I can come back to tell you how I feel." Her face slowly morphed into one of despondency. "It's alright if you don't feel the same way about me, Natsu. Everybody has to move on."
"Did you forget what I promised you?" Natsu abruptly asked, gaining the gloomy woman's attention. "On that rooftop back in Crocus, you told me that you felt you were left behind. I promised that I'd carry you. No, what I promised that I'd never leave you. The hollow feeling I had for two years was finally filled when you came back."
Something happened to the dragon slayer that surprised him. Tears began forming in the edges of his eyes but it wasn't sadness. It was the opposite. These were the tears of happiness.
While he considered everyone as a family within Fairy Tail, that feeling only stretched up to camaraderie and friendship. From Lucy, Grey, and Erza to the Gildarts, Ichigo, and the master; each member was an important part of his Nakama. However, Lisanna held a much deeper place in his heart. She was what filled the void that lingered during her two-year absence. At first, he didn't know how such a person could wash away the emptiness but now he understood.
It was love.
…And hearing Lisanna say it to him stirred those same emotions that only she could bring forth.
Natsu's embrace of the girl was now at its tightest. His arms were shaking from the swirl of emotions in his mind, the strongest of which was elation. "I don't why I deserve this…or you." Hot liquid trailed down his cheeks as he gazed at the woman before with the widest smile he could make. "Thank you for loving me, Lisanna," he spoke earnestly. "…And I promise to never leave you and to stay by your side."
Lisanna couldn't believe it. Natsu, the man she loved, returned her feelings. In that instant, she turned to face him and reciprocated his embrace with equal strength. "I'm so happy!" she cried. Finally, she could be with the man who made her childhood so precious.
"Hey," the pinkette called. "Let's make a promise," suggested the son of Igneel.
"What is it?"
"When we bring Maddie into this world, I want the both of us to give her what she needed the most."
The white-haired teen knew what her lover meant. She thought of the sacrifices Madeline made to save them and the hardships she had to injure in their absence. There was only one thing that a girl so special as Madeline Dragneel deserve from her mother and father.
"Our love," Lisanna answered. It was love that was deprived of the young Fullbringer and now that they have the chance, they would give it to her unconditionally.
After declaring that promise, the two lovers couldn't help but admire each other's eyes. Blue, ocean-like colored eyes gazed at a pair of onyx orbs. The world became blurry; the only thing clear was each other.
Unconsciously, their eyes became lidden while their heads inched closer to the other. Nothing else was clear other than what they wanted…and what they wanted was each other.
"Natsu."
"Lisanna."
Their voices were low, almost guttural…and yet it served to draw them even closer. Natsu's hands found their way behind Lisanna while the girl in question had hers cupping her partner's cheeks. They pulled each other close until finally, their lips connect.
The soft feel of contact only increased when the two mages closed their eyes, thereby depriving sight and enhancing the sense of touch. Unlike before, Natsu wasn't surprised and Lisanna wasn't mortified. They both wanted this. No longer were they governed by logic or reason but instead, wanting and carnal desire.
The dragon slayer leaned forward, gently laying the shapeshifter onto the bedding of hay as they continued exploring each other's mouths. Their hands start to wander, tracing their partner's bodily frame while gradually removing every article of clothing they had on them. While it was raining outside and the cold was merciless, Natsu and Lisanna weren't bothered by it. They had this fire that burned intensely within them and they wanted each other to feel it.
Inhibitions disappeared. Truths were revealed. Emotions were expressed. Everything was laid bare in the rain and it culminated in the union of two lovers. Separated by space and frozen in time, at last, they have truly reconnected and are now…
…One.
Mavis had a suspicion that someone was observing her guild in Crocus. She knew exactly who that person might be. Even if he wasn't near the capital city, the ghostly teen at least knew that the person was aware of the events that transpired days before…especially the godly surge of spiritual pressure.
Deep within the woods, a raven-haired young man sat and admired the greenery that stretched as far as he could see. Maybe the rain yesterday added the glint in the leaves as the light from the sun reflected off of it. While nature was worth admiring, it was sadly an endeavor he could not appreciate given his unfortunate circumstance. That said, there was one phenomenon that he could not get his mind off.
A pressure, so otherworldly and so suffocating, that he felt like a speck in the presence of something beyond comprehension. Even with his power, he succumbed to the godly weight until it faded, perplexing him to no end. Just what was that? What kind of being could possess such enormous power that could rival the likes of Acnologia whom even he fears?
The person suddenly smirked. He will just have to figure out that dilemma at a later time. For now, he had a visitor in the form of a spectral girl.
"I thought I sensed your presence at the Grand Magic Games, Zeref," Mavis remarked as she floated above the black-haired wizard. "Did you watch?"
Zeref's eyes were covered by the shadow of his hair, making it difficult to decern his expression. However, he held an amused grin as he answered the first master of Fairy Tail. "I neither hear you speak nor see your face, my dear Mavis. Yet, I know you are somewhere near, looking over me with those big disdainful eyes."
"It's been seven years since we were this close to each other," Mavis stated.
"It's been seven years since we were this close to each other," Zeref repeated.
The ghostly guildmaster slowly descended, landing behind the dark mage before asking, "Why do you persist here? Are searching for a place to die?"
"My place of death has been determined," calmly answered the ancient wizard. "I've been around for centuries, Mavis. I've witnessed the rise of many kingdoms." His face fell into that of dismay. "Human conflict, hatred, wickedness; with the dawn of each new era, I always hoped these things would pass. I realized, however, that the depravity of man is a constant."
Mavis disagreed. "There are always those who fight for something better," she countered.
Zeref let out an amused scoff and turned to face where he perceived she was. "Come now. Those idealists are the worst ones; lying to themselves and each other with every breath they take."
"Then, you won't wait any longer," spoke Mavis with certainty.
"That's correct." Zeref stood up, dusted his toga, and looked at the ghost of the former master. "For seven years, I've been making up my mind and I've decided that since the world has rejected me, I have no choice but to reject the world."
"Fairy Tail accepts this world, even with all its flaws."
The winds picked up. The lush green leaves of the trees withered and died as Zeref let loose his black magic. His head held down and eyes shadowed, the immortal mage glared at the young-looking ghost and uttered words that would make an ordinary man quiver and hide.
"This will be my gift to the world," the black wizard began. "A brand new world, purified and sweet."
Mavis' gaze was that of pity and sadness. "I assume that there would be fighting."
"No," Zeref answered. He lifted his head to stare directly at the emerald eyes of the Fairy Tail guildmaster. Blood red pulsating with hateful power. "It will be a one-sided annihilation. Neither man, woman, nor child will be spared."
Suddenly, another voice was heard. One that held conviction and defiance to Zeref's declaration
"Is that so?"
What followed next was a massive weight filling the forest with the will of its source. Both Zeref and Mavis froze, eyes wide as they felt the pressure grip their soul. It wasn't as powerful as the one previously but it was still a display of strength that both of them couldn't fathom.
"You wish to destroy the world? Well now, I can't have that, can we?"
Another person walked toward the two. Slowly, with each step he took, the aura he unleashed radiated power that made the legendary Black Wizard step back in apprehension. Black robes flaring and twin blades humming in sync with their owner's will, the person stopped behind Mavis while he scowled at the immortal.
"Ichigo," was all Mavis could say.
The pressure gradually lifted, giving the two powerful mages reprieve. It was then that Zeref realized something. Putting two and two together, the raven-haired mage concluded that the incomprehensible power from days ago was exerted by this man.
"So, you're the one," said Zeref. "That ungodly power that blanketed the continent, it was you."
"And what of it?" questioned Ichigo, his scowl never letting up.
"Then my guess was right," admitted the immortal. "The balance of power in Earthland has shifted. With your presence, the end of the era is no longer certain. At first, it was just between me and Acnologia. But now, a third player has revealed himself. Tell me, who are you? Or more precisely, what are you?"
"His name is Ichigo Kurosaki and he is a member of Fairy Tail," Mavis replied in the reaper's stead. "He is a Soul Reaper."
Initially surprised, Zeref fell into a series of soft chuckles before looking back at the swordsman and the former guildmaster. "This is a surprise," he remarked. "A Soul Reaper, you say? I've only heard of those in legends. I never realized I'd get to see one in the flesh. I guess Fairy Tail does have the power to save this world from my wrath."
"And by 'wrath' you mean a war of annihilation?" questioned Ichigo.
"That's right. To cleanse the world of its filth, everything must be destroyed and rebuilt from the ground up. Nothing from the previous era should remain so that the new world would not be tainted by the sins of the past."
"So, you seek genocide," Mavis interrupted. She got a nod from the dark mage which made her share the same expression as Ichigo. "I swear that Fairy Tail will stop you." Mavis had made her own vow, one that was shared by the reaper behind her. "We will wipe your stain from this land."
"If you want a war, then you'll have it," Ichigo interjected. He flexed his spiritual energy, flakes of red, blue, and black danced around his body as his reiatsu flared once more. "Just know that the side that will be annihilated isn't ours." He closed his eyes and opened them, revealing a pair of golden orbs surrounded by darkness surpassing the moonless night. He then finished his warning, making the black wizard shiver momentarily.
"…It's yours."
A/N: ModernRogue11 here and this chapter serves as the end for the Grand Magic Games Arc. I hope you enjoyed my adaptation of this saga and that this ending for the arc was at least satisfactory. That said, I think I'll be going on a month or two hiatus to prepare for the original mini arc I've planned as well as lay the foundations for the Tartaros Arc. Also, I'll be using a different format when I go back to writing to make transitioning from one scene to another easier.
Like always, if you like the story, add it to your favorites collection or leave a comment if you want to share your opinions. Just make sure that if you have criticisms, make sure they're constructive and not degrading.
With that said, I'll be seeing you in two months.
