Chapter Two; Old faces, Older enemies

Land of Fire; Hidden Leaf; Zeta Hideout

Anko steps back into the hidden hideout for her team during their previous time as an active group, still as clean as she left it as she strolled down toward the rooms "Squirts! Ya here?!"
"What you want ol lady?!" Kiba's voice from further in causing a tick mark to appear upon the interrogators face "Who else?" she growled out reaching the main hall to which Naruto can be seen working upon a new set of armour for the group, totally focused on the task of painting seals upon the various garments and based off previous experience, Anko decided not to bother him. "Yo." Shikamaru appearing from the armoury, dish cloth wiping down his hands "Yo yourself. Why didn't you respond?"
"Was working on that new kunai launcher you asked about." He responds casually, not bothered by her irritated tone "…and?" she pushes, and he sighs "It's not simple you know. Fuck, just chill out." He grumbles stepping away whilst throwing the launcher at her from his pouch "The poison dispenser is as you wanted it." As he yawns entering the kitchen, the woman promptly equipping the small device that was unnoticeable beneath her trench coat causing her to grin "Did I ever tell you, that you're my favourite squirt?"
"You told Nar that yesterday when you got your new branded kunai from him." Shikamaru answered causing the woman to pout "…and Ino the day before when she gave you that new concoction." Naruto adds from the table as he lifts his brush from the vambrace. Glancing to her he sees her pout "Geeze, I swear I'm supposed to be the captain here. Respect me." Naruto and Shikamaru both snort at that "Oi."
"So what the hokage want with you this early? I swear you don't normally get up till well past noon." Naruto asks inspecting the new seal array upon the clothing "Ah, well, you see…" as she recalls the meeting a deep growl escaped her throat "Several things actually. We'll need to report there at thirteen hundred for a debrief."
"A debrief?" Naruto and Shikamaru both say in unison, eyebrows raised, with the latter returning from the kitchen with a bacon sandwich. She nods "The mutt and flower need to be there too."
"Something tells me this is going to be a headache." Naruto growls and his Nara friend nods as he sits at the small table with him "Probably." A sigh escapes the jonin lips "Still, orders are orders. You hear that right?" turning to the hall further down at the end so the dog nin could hear "Thirteen hundred! Got it." The voice of Kiba returns "If your late, night hunting for a week!"
"I said I got it already!"
"Just making sure." Anko states before returning to the two chowing down on chicken sandwiches casually "New gear?"
"New gear." Naruto confirms "Environmental controls. All that rain in Ame soaked us through the bone so I updated them."
"Sounds good. I'm heading to get some dango, want some?"
"…and beers. We're legal now so…" Naruto adds to which she nods before vanishing in a shunshin.

Land of Fire; Hidden Leaf; Hokage's Office

"You called." Anko questioned as her team stepped into the office from the shadows yet again, barrier in place "Do you have to enter that way every time?" Tsunade asks with a raised eyebrow to which the whole squad all nod causing her to sigh in exasperation "Whatever. I have a few questions and new orders so listen up." They all stood straighter despite the extra presences in the room "After your performance in the last mission, I have decided to add a new member to your team." The look from the squad at her was scandalous "With all due respect, Lady Hokage…" Shikamaru states while Anko stays silent, having already heard this and expected this response from her team "…we've trained together, bled together… mourned together…" his voice trailing off at the end, but everyone heard and their faces dropped slightly causing the last Senju to widen her eyes "We are an effective team as is." Ino speaking up on behalf of her childhood friend "Yeah, our pack is fine as is. Outsiders would just slow us down." Kiba desperately trying to reign in his anger at this suggestion "Our formations and tactics are our own, taking our skills and abilities into consideration." Shikamaru gripes "Adding people is unnecessary and way too troublesome to deal with after perfecting them to this point."
"Enough." The kage growled "I am your kage. These are my orders, you will follow them."
"Yes ma'am." They all chorus "Good." She nods then looks to Kakashi leaning back against the wall "Kakashi is a skilled anbu member and will join your team as Dog."
"Watch dog more like." Naruto gripes with narrowed eyes "You have a problem with this, Naruto?" Tsunade with a deadly glare that he doesn't even flinch at "Yes, ma'am."
"Oh? I'm listening."
"Kakashi is out of shape and will only slow us down. All he does is dwell in the past and laze about while openly reading his smut as a way to cope with our occupational hazards, ma'am. We do not need nor want him." Naruto states perfectly flatly, no arrogance nor boasting just like he was reciting a fact that caused said jonin to glare coldly at the blond "I was the best Anbu captain that…"
"Keyword being 'Was' the best." Naruto snaps back, before returning his gaze to the Hokage "We do not need a watch dog, ma'am. We have proven more than capable in our field of expertise." Tsunade was actually at a loss for words. Naruto had provided a solid argument against the appointment of her most trusted anbu and even pointed out that he hasn't undergone serious training in some time even going so far as to point out that she was concerned about their mentalities.

The room was dead silent as words had long since been spoken with the six-man cell standing calmly while the lone 'outsider' was leaking killing intent at his faults being pointed out so brazenly "Last time I checked, Uzumaki, I was your jonin sensei. You will…" Naruto's snort cut off the ranting Jonin "Sensei? You taught me tree climbing and that was it." His icy glare at the silver haired man could have frozen an iceberg "No tijutsu, ninjutsu, nor genjutsu. I was lucky to survive as long as I did."
"That…"
"Is true. Even the pervert taught me more but even that was mediocre at best." Naruto added icy blues locked on the honey brown of the Senju "How about a bet?" Shikamaru speaking up gaining the rooms attention "Seeing as Hatake thinks we are ill suited and need his help, we will take him on in a spar."}
"I'll win against any of you."
"Perhaps but let's put Naruto's words on the table. He and Kiba will take on Hatake. The three all have similar skillsets so the fight would be more easily gaugeable." he continued causing the Hokage to ponder for a moment before agreeing "Is that okay with you, Kakashi?"
"Fine. We can do this in the Anbu training ground."

Land of Fire; Hidden Leaf; Training Ground Zero

Naruto, Kiba, Akamaru and Kuruma stand before Kakashi in the secret training facility open to Anbu operatives. All of the off-duty elites are watching from a safe distance having heard about the new team to their ranks and this being their first time witnessing any of them in a fight against one of their best. Tsuande was the proctor and stood between both parties "Akamaru, Kuruma; we have this. Go sit aside for now." Naruto ordered and the two canines leaped back "You sure you don't need them?" Kakashi questioned in his old anbu uniform, sword and all "Yeah. You got my back brother?" Kiba holding up his right fist "You know it." Naruto responds bumping his left as the two stood back-to-back with their sole focus on their prey. "Are both sides ready?" the hokage asks and receives three nods "Then begin!" and immediately the duo leap forward, claws ready to render flesh. Kakashi's sharingan spins wildly as he leaps above the charging duo only to receive a solid kick to the chest, a headbut from Kiba sends him flipping back and landing on his feet roughly "What the…?" he questioned as both teens fall to all fours "I haven't done this in a while." Naruto comments as Kiba chuckles "Let's cut loose!" he howls and the two leap forward "Twin FANG!" The two roars as both spins widely in the Inuzuka commonly taught technique that surprised most as a non-clansmen could perform it so perfectly. Kakashi leaps forward out of their path only for the blond tornado to turn sharply and graze him. Before the copycat could react to that Kiba's drill brushed passed him, cutting up his back. The blond slides to a stop, already on his last hand sign "Wind style, Air cutter!" he swipes his arms around and razor-sharp blades of wind shoot toward the former captain who raises an earth barrier to block it. He lets out a sigh but quickly leaps back as the wall is shattered by Kiba's sparking claws. Whilst still in the air Naruto drop kicks down leaving a two-meter crater where his heel hit the ground "Water style; Water dragon bomb!" Kakashi calls out and from the small lake rises a dragon of water to which roars at the duo only to be blown apart by a bolt of lightning courtesy of one Inizuka.

In the confusion of raining water, that dulled the sense his sense of smell, Kakashi didn't notice the pouncing Naruto until the last moment to which he ducked beneath the claw swipe, returning an uppercut that was blocked by a well-timed knee strike. The tijutsu bout looked to be in a stalemate with the animalistic style of Naruto to the modified interceptor fist of Kakashi however Kiba's strike from behind threw him off balance and knocked him down. Tears all over his uniform showed that the fight was against him as the duo charged him yet again, keeping Kakashi on the defensive the entire time and only barely holding them off. Just as Kakashi was getting into the flow of their movements they both leaped back but before the jonin could pursuit them he felt the cold steel upon his neck "Yield." The icy voice of Naruto rings in his ear from behind.

The gathered crowd was in awe at the show, two freshly minted Special Jonin just defeated one of their best but one in the crowd wasn't too pleased with the display "Why'd you take it easy?" Anko growled causing everyone to look at her. "What do you mean by taking it easy? Kakashi was pushed pretty hard, so I don't think he took it…"
"Not Kakashi." She snapped raising eyebrows at her disregard to the hokage "You guys took it easy on him, why?"
"He's an ally." Naruto responds with a shrug "No intent makes it hard to actually get into the carnage." shrugged Kiba with a frown "Kakashi can handle himself…" started the hokage "…and with me here, any wounds will be treated. Just don't go for the instant kill shots." The two teens look to one another, shrugged then grinned "Okay." They both chorus as the shadow clone is dispelled and an irritated Kakashi returns to position, gone was his laid-back attitude and now somewhat aware of his opponents' movements now. Right now, he was the epitome of the Anbu captain he was.

"Begin." Both parties dart forward and engage in hand to hand. Elbows blocked, claws redirected, and slashes stepped away from. Kakashi was matching them move for move and showed no sign of letting up as his speed continued to increase past mid Jonin to elite Jonin level. He sides stepped Naruto's lunge, grabbing his wrist to move to block Koba's swipe. The swipe connected with Naruto only for him to disperse in chakra smoke that an arrow flew through and punched clean into Kakashi's shoulder knocking him back as Kiba's claw slices his left leg open. Leaping back to gain distance he was assaulted again with another arrow that grazed his shoulder, his duck having saved him only to meet Kiba's rising knee. In the next moment Kakashi was pinned to the ground by Kiba and Naruto both atop him with an arrow in his lung and a claw to his throat. The arena was quite until Anko predictably broke it with a smug clap "That's more like it." Tsunade was standing over Kakashi in moments, checking the wounds over and treating him "Seven broken ribs, multiple lacerations, a broken thigh bone too many micro fractures to count…" she pauses "Is that a poison?"
"Nasty stuff, right?" Kiba says as Naruto looks down at the man, bow still in arm "It drains chakra and reaction speed. Once inside the victim it causes all manner of…"
"Antidote now!" yells the medical ninja who was promptly thrown a blue vile, caught by the kage who promptly applied it.

Land of Fire; Hidden Leaf; Anbu Briefing Room Two

"YOU COULD HAVE KILLED HIM!" Tsunade roared at Team Zeta, more accurately Kiba and Naruto "We did warn him not to underestimate us." Kiba commented with Naruto nodding along with him "He may be an ex-anbu captain, but he's let his skills slip." Naruto adds "Besides…" he points to his captain "…she told us to stop holding back." All eyes in the room turn to said kunochi who just smirks sinisterly "Serves him right for doubting my teaching skills."
"This was a spar. Not a death match." Tsunade continued "We coulda killed him if we wanted. You did say that he could handle himself" Kiba counters "We just roughed him up a lil." Naruto adds "A little?" the kage with a quirked eyebrow "Those arrows only hit his lungs. At that range, his heart was an easy target." Naruto responds causally whilst looking to his shadow using friend "Besides, if Shika was the sniper…" he trails off as said teen looks back at him "Woulda went for a limb shot."
"He would have evaded."
"Wouldn't have mattered." Shikamaru chuckles to which Naruto conceded to "True."
"How are you so no cholent about this?"
"We're shinobi." Ino chimes up "Danger is an occupational hazard." Tsunade tried to argue against that but found no words as she rounds up on their teacher and captain "What the hell have you taught them?"
"How to kill…" Anko shrugged "…and do it efficiently. Then how to not get caught doing so." The hokage sighs heavily at that, it was true that they as shinobi were assassins in the night but even still something just didn't sit well with her about the skills of these five young ninja within her ranks. Perhaps it was casual attitude to taking a life, but she couldn't be sure "Lady Hokage…" Naruto calls out breaking said shinobi from her thoughts "…he's alive, isn't he? We did as you instructed and took advantage of your presnces. Why are you so hung up on this when we were just following your instruction?" again she had no counter which was grating on her nerves that her little brother figure was so much different to what she was used to and didn't know how to handle it.

"You showed excellent proficiency…" Dragon, the Anbu commander, spoke gaining the rooms attention "…and tactics that flowed perfectly. I commend your abilities and coordination."
"Thank you sir." Kiba and Naruto responded together "I am curious to see how much more you have hidden however it seems that you won't be forth coming on that front, correct?" Dragon was met with a stern silence to which he nods at "Very well. I will add you to our roster…"
"I don't think that is advisable, Dragon-sama." Ino speaks up causing said shinobi to turn to her "Our team is all about not being known. The less that know, the more we can operate in the shadows. There is a reason we are so scarce in the village."
"…but we are…"
"You may be Anbu Commander…" Shikamaru speaking up now "…but no doubt there are agents within your forces that will disseminate classified information to parties within the village that have no business to know. That will eventually lead to leaks outside the walls of the village."
"You can't be serious?!" Tsunade almost stutters to which they all nod "It's happened before…" Naruto speaking softly to which Anko almost growled at "I told you that was…"
"They knew we were coming." Shikamaru states flatly "Only way to ambush us the way they did."
"What happened?" Dragon asks now intrigued more than ever "Our last mission was a cock-up from the word go." Kiba growled "We lost half the squad." Naruto sitting forward on the desk he was sitting at "…you mean…?"
"We originally had eight members, Anko-sensei was the eleventh as our captain." Ino begins to reminisce "Our squad layout isn't standard of leaf Anbu." Shikamaru announces to which Dragon nods "That's because we lost the others." Naruto speaking softly, Kiba's regret, remorse, and anger was picked up on by the Kage and Commander though the others all showed the same signs though Anko's anger was notably higher "Is that why you were decommissioned?" Tsunade inquires "Partly." Anko responds "We managed to kill the thirty Root Anbu who attacked us." Naruto growled out causing the two senior shinobi to stiffen which caused said shinobi to smile mirthlessly "Yeah, Danzo found out about our little group. He wanted to control us, command us, force out loyalty to him alone."
"Lord third should have given us that order." Kiba growled softly "I would have torn them apart."
"Drop it Kiba." Ino snaps though it was hollow "Orders were orders."
"At least let us put them on the memorial stone." Kiba asks pleadingly at the Hokage but was shot down by Anko "We're Anbu, pup." drawing his attention to the snake wielder "We aren't even acknowledged by our allies."
"Still…" only for a hand to be placed on his shoulder, his eyes find that of his blood brother "Kiba… she'll be remembered by us till our end." Naruto almost whispered but it carried "Tsk." Fists clenched "What were the…?"
"It doesn't matter." Shikamaru and Ino both state firmly "We have to move forward." Naruto said still looking at his brother who nodded silently.

Land of Fire; Hidden Leaf; Medical wing

Kakashi slowly comes too, finding his hold body ablaze with aches and pains as he slowly sits up to find his old Anbu team looking upon him. Managing a weak "Yo…" causes them to sigh in relief "You messed up." Tenzo, an average looking man sitting at his bedside, his hazel hair held back by a full-face protector similar to the second Hokages "I didn't expect them to be so fluid." The silver haired captain retorted "They kicked your ass, captain." The purple haired Yugoa Yuzki declared, her cat mask on her hip as she leant stood in the corner of the room "Don't rub salt on my wounds. I get it. They almost killed me." Kakashi griped trying not to aggravate his tired body "What was that all about anyway?" Tenzo cutting in again "Lady Hokage wanted eyes on the team. I recommended myself as a former member of Anbu." He sighed again "They refused, and we put it to a duel. Didn't expect to be handled so thoroughly."
"Who trained them to fight like that? I mean, their teamwork was unparalleled." Yugoa stated clearly impressed with the display "Anko did. Apparently, she trained them from young."
"They haven't displayed that skill before now though." Kakashi nodded at his former subordinate "Due to a seal they all had. Sealed away their memories and skills to ensure no one would notice them."
"Oh? So, what happened?" asked Tenzo as he sat back in his seat, arms folded "Lady Hokage returned them to active duty to assist Lord Jairya in a mission to Ame."
"Reactive?" Tenzo with a raised eyebrow "Naruto, Kiba, Shikamaru, Ino, and Anko are the remining members of Team Zeta." Kakashi revealed causing the two to stiffen "Aren't they just a rumour?" Tenzo questioned with a small ball of sweat running down his neck "I thought they were a myth."
"So did I." Kakashi sighs "Though after the seals were removed, I realised just how real they were."
"That fight was only with two of them. How strong are they together?" Yugoa mumbles "If that display was anything to go by…" Tenzo added with a slight shudder as Kakashi nodded "Either way, they are incredibly secretive; almost paranoid."
"Comes with the territory." Tenzo replies and he nods "Glad they're on our side then."

Land of Fire; Hidden Leaf; Unknown Location

A bandaged man sat in the darkness, his lone exposed eye closed but it was clear that he was by no means defenceless. A pale skin teen bows before him and the old man's voice cracked through the air "It seems we have finally come across the group that escaped us not long ago." He eyes the files laid before him "To think, the vessel was one of them. So highly trained and efficient, my old friend clearly still had a backbone to misguide me this much."
"What are my orders, Danzo-sama?" the boy questions "Infiltrate their group. I want to know exactly what skills they hold and report their every move."
"By your word…" as the boy moves to leave the old man calls out "Do not act hastily. These targets will not hesitate to end your life, nor will they offer any mercy." A sinister grin appears "After all, they too revel in the darkness we reside."
"Yes Danzo-sama." The boy disappears into the void, no sign of his presence as the old man glances back down at the highly classified files that covered his desk "I will have them beneath my thumb and with that, no one will stand against the mighty tree that is Konoha."

Land of Fire; Hidden Leaf; Dango Shop

Team Zeta arrived at the Dango shop, at the behest of their captain though none of the others dared oppose her decision. They were trained too well for that. Sitting down in her usual booth, the team moved well co-ordinately as normal and sat appropriately. It didn't take long for the sweet dumplings to flow over the table like rushing water "So, that was annoying…" Ino sighs from her seat atop Naruto's lap, enjoying a tea "We managed to avoid a spy within our ranks." Kiba states slipping his companion a few of the sweet treats "That was just the first wave. Now that we're official…" Naruto comments looking to the groups brains who nods "No doubt. He will try next."
"Let's just kill 'em when they show." Kiba exclaimed in a hushed voice as the others pondered that "Would be easier." Naruto confirmed with Ino nodding in agreement, but Shikaramu just sighed "Doubt it will be that simple."
"It won't be." Anko twirling a dango stick between her two fingers "Knowing who shall not be named, the hokage will probably be tied up into it to try force our hand."
"Our abilities are still largely unknown. So, knowing them, they'll be here to try and…" Shikamru pauses upon noticing a set of eyes discreetly monitoring them. Glancing at the teams two trackers who subtly nod confirming his feelings he sighs "Troublesome."
"Don't fall back into that." Ino growled threateningly causing the pineapple styled youth to raises his hands in defence "Relax. Just seemed like our foe has already moved their pieces." Causing the two kunochi to snap toward him "Seriously?" Anko with a raised eyebrow before turning to Kiba and Naruto who both nodded "They're good to avoid your detection." Naruto added as Ino fed him another piece of Dango, taking one herself right after "Smells like Ink and steel though." Kiba rubbing his nose and Akamaru whined at that.

"We should…"
"There you guys are." Tenten calls out drawing the groups attention. They all turn to see Tenten leading the reminding members of Teams Eight and Ten, her own team bringing up the rear "We've been looking everywhere for…" she trails off seeing the closeness of Naruto and Ino, the latter sitting on the lap of the former "Tenten. Can we help…?" Naruto trails off Noticing the widen-eyes of his peers "What?"
"Why is miss Ino sitting on your lap?!" asks Rock lee questions carefully as his eyes flicker to the trembling Hinata. The Zeta group blink at that before looking to said pair "This is my seat." Ino speaking as if it was the most obvious thing in the world "It's always been my seat."
"I don't remember the last time you actually sat beside him." Kiba chuckles "I do." Shikamaru chopping down on his sweet treat "So, you guys together?" Asks Tenten while Ino feeds Naruto another piece of sweet dumpling "We are all together." Naruto comments with his mouthful. Before anyone could press any further Hinata runs out with Neji calling out for her to stop but it was too late. He briefly glares at Naruto before rushing after his cousin. "You're a piece of work, Naruto." Tenten almost growled out "Shut it Pan Pan!" Naruto snaps causing said kunochi to freeze up "W… wha… what did you just call me?"
"Pan Pan." Naruto says staring back at her with a soft smile upon his face but was wiped away as she bonked him "Fishcake. So, you remembered?"
"Yeah… a month or so ago." Naruto responded as Ino rubs his head "I see. Well, in any case, you really are careless."
"Hinata's was like a sister to me. I could never return her feelings, especially when you add the fact that she's an heiress. It would never be allowed, regardless of her feelings." Naruto explains casually causing Choji, Rock Lee, Tenten, and Shino to look at him surprised at the logic "You… you…?"
"Naturally. As clueless as I acted, I am not that stupid."
"Yeah right…" Kiba coughs suspiciously but was promptly kicked beneath the table with a hard glare from Naruto to accompany it "She has to deal with it herself. I can't hold her hand forever."
"That's rather cold of you." Tenten chided but Naruto just shrugged at that "Not intrested in being a crutch for her forever." Signalling to the group to leave, Ino stands along with the rest of the team "We're shinobi, Pan Pan. The sooner you all realise the significance of that, the longer you all live." He continued as he follows out his team. Tenten looked after the groups back confused and bewildered "That wasn't Naruto… was it?" Choji questioned confused "Not the one we know at least." Shino adds "No. That's Naruto's true self that he hid a long time ago." Tenten sighs at that drawing the others attention to her "What does that mean?" asks Rock Lee who notices his teammates soft smile "He's hidden himself away for a long time now. He's finally showing himself in his entirety; the use of my old nickname is proof of that."

Land of Fire; Hidden Leaf; Forest Outskirts

The team walked casually through the forests on the outskirts of the village away from the prying eyes of the general public. Anko lets out a heavy sigh as she looks back at her team, Ino hanging off Naruto's arm with Shikamaru and Kiba walk either side of the duo all with serene smiles. She could help but share in this brief moment of peace and quiet but as soon as said smile formed it faded as now, she could sense their tail which forces another sigh from her lips "It's time, Anko-sensei." Naruto speaking softly allowing the wind to carry his voice to her. She offered a hollow smile before nodding "Yeah, we should get to it." Those words acted like a switch and the teens turned into the hardened shinobi they were trained to be "Seize and Detain. Killing as a last resort." She signed in their unique hand signals to which they nodded and all six vanish.

Sounds of steel-on-steel echoes through the forest within the village hidden in the leaves, the smell of blood filled the greenery as a cloaked figure drops from the limps of a tree with an arrow in his right shoulder. Moments later a second, third, and fourth were forced down in similar fashion though two were hit by senbon needles, and the last a kunai to the base of their spine, paralysing them. Seconds of silence were broken as Zeta team surrounded the group with Shikamaru remaining up in the tree, his bow drawn "So, Danzo's made his move? Sooner then we expect but not outside our expectations." Naruto says upon his approach to the group. The cloaked shinobi try their best to return to their fighting stances only for another voice from the shadows to speak up "So this was the urgency you called me here for brat?" Tsunade stepping forward as numerous Anbu teams land atop the branches all around the small area "This is why we don't associate with anyone. Keeping to ourselves keeps us safe." Anko remarks not looking away from the four-rogue shinobi "I don't see how this…"
"The walls have eyes and ears." Ino states, senbon needles laced between her fingers all dripping with various poisons "We aren't novices here."
"We'll take it from…"
"You aren't fooling anyone." Naruto cutting off Dragon glaring at a particular tree "Come out or you'll share the same fate as those fools who tried taking us on directly." Silence. Suddenly the air shifted, and a pale shinobi stepped out with a fake smile upon his face "I didn't mean to…"
"Save it." Kiba growled with Akamaru following suit "You've tailed us since the shop. It's obvious you're one of these drones with that fake smile of yours."
"Take them all to T and I." Tsunade orders but before that the three able bodies shinobi charge whilst the last swallowed a pill and the pale one leaped away. In moments the Anbu cut down the attacking group, Shikamaru fired at the Pale one, his arrow punching through his spine and into his left lung before vanishing from his sight "Damn."
"He isn't surviving that." Naruto calls out to his shadow using friend who nods before dropping down beside them all "Still there's a leak somewhere and now Danzo is on to us."
