He was 12 so it's no surprise, we knew it was going to happen, but we were trying to hold on until Christmas and have one more happy family memory with him by giving him medicine that eased up on any pain he had, but he decided it was time. Now I've gotta keep the little one company due to still being young, so I can only get an hour or 2 of writing in. This is one of the reasons why I don't use a schedule for story writing. Chapter 10: Branded vs Stars
"Action!" the younger kids yelled excitedly.
"Duel!" Zack and Hokuto yelled.

Drawing their hands, Zack had drawn cards he was hoping to see early on in the duel.
'Perfect.' Zack thought with a poker face, so he doesn't give anything away. 'This will help a lot during my turn. If the idiot decides to show off that is.'
"How so?" Zarc asked.
"If his deck is Constellar, like I think it is since things line up like cannon, his deck will lean heavily on Xyz summons and returning cards back to the opponent's hand." Zack explained. "And this card will help me get the leg up on him."
"Got it." Zarc said with a smirk and nodded.
Zack looks towards Hokuto with a glare.
"Throw your best at me!" Zack said. "I'll still win!"
"He has such spirit." Himika Akaba admitted. "I wonder how long it will last."
Watching the duel around the corner was her son, Reiji Akaba.
"Hokuto! Show him your power!" Himika ordered.
"Understood, Chairwoman-sensei." Hokuto responded. "I'll go first!"
Turn 1: Hokuto
"Fine by me!" Zack said as he began to run. "My hand is better suited for a second turn!"
"What's Zacknii-chan doing?" Ayu asked.
"He's probably looking for an Action Card." Sora guessed.
"But I thought Zacknii-san doesn't like using Action Cards." Futoshi said.
"Knowing Zack, he has something else in mind." Serena said. "He always says, "A good duelist knows the difference between knowing how to play their card and how to use it".
The kids look at each other and back to Serena.
"What does that mean Serenanee-chan?" Tatsuya asked.
"Just watch and you'll see." Serena answered with a smile.
"I summon Constellar Algiedi!" Hokuto announced.

Both Constellar monsters turn into energies of light and enter the vortex.
"I Xyz summon Rank 5: Constellar Pleiades!" Hokuto yelled as he placed the card on his blade.

"Certainly." Ruri said. "When you Xyz Summon, you use several monsters with the same level to special summon an Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck. However, there are certain monsters that can use an effect to use an Xyz monster on the field to summon itself. Xyz Monsters have Ranks instead of Levels."
"What are those lights swirling around it?" Ayu asked.
"Overlay Units." Ruri answered. "Xyz monsters have powerful abilities, and they need those lights to activate them."
"Ohhhh~…" the kids said in awe.
"But Zacknii-san didn't need Xyz Summon to bring out his Xyz monster." Futoshi said.
The LDS group heard what the young boy said and turned to them in surprise.
"Remember what Zack said." Ruri said. "It's because of his Field Spell that allowed him to do so."
"No way." a girl gasped. "That Zack guy Xyz Summoned without Xyz Summoning?"
"It has to be a lie." a boy with a bokken said.
'Lie or not, we shall see his skills in this duel.' Himika thought.
"I end my turn." Hokuto said.
'I had hoped that they would've picked Yuya Sakaki to battle to see what he would do after seeing an Xyz Summon if he really did attack Sawatari.' Himiko thought. 'Oh well, this does give me the chance to find out what you can do, Zack Hikari.'
With Zack, he managed to find an Action Card during his opponent's turn and placed it in his hand.
"My turn!" Zack said as he drew his card. "I draw!"
Turn 2: Zack
Zack places the drawn card in his hand and looks at Hokuto.
"You say you're at the top but not placing a face down to protect yourself or your monster." Zack said. "What a rookie move."
"Oh yeah?" Hokuto mocked. "Then why don't you show me what a real duelist move is?"
"Gladly." Zack responded as he grabbed a card. "I activate the effect Gameciel, The Sea Turtle Kaiju in my hand!"

"You what?!" Hokuto gasped.
Pleiades faded away and taking its place was a giant turtle with wings.
"No way!" the LDS girl said. "He got rid of Hokuto's monster so easily!"
"I've never heard of a monster like that before!" Yuzu said.
"It appears that Zack has other monsters then his Branded ones." Atem said.
"Now I'll activate the effects of 2 more monsters in my hand!" Zack said. "First one up is Unknown Synchron!"

"Aw. It's adorable." Anzu said.
"But why summon it after he replaced that Xyz monster with his?" Jonouchi asked.
"You're probably wondering why I waited until now to summon it even though you had your own monster." Zack said.
"Guess you'll get your answer Jo." Yugi said.
"I like to keep up to date with duel cards." Zack explained. "So I knew all about your Xyz monsters effect."
"What?" Hokuto gasped.
"You would've used Pleiades effect to return Unknown back to my hand and since its ability can only be used once per duel, it would've been wasted." Zack said.
"So that's why he did it." Atem said. "Smart thinking."
"Now where was I… oh right." Zack said. "Since you have a Kaiju monster on your field, I can Special Summon 1 to mine. I Special Summon Radian, The Multidimensional Kaiju!"

A giant shadowy monster arose on Zack's field.
"Next, I'll use the spell card Pot of Greed." Zack said as a bigger version of it appeared in front of him.

Just as the card read, Zack drew two cards from his deck and the spell card shattered. Seeing the cards he drew; Zack gave off a small smirk before placing them in his hand and then grabbing the last card from his starting draw.
"I now Normal summon Fallen of Albaz." Zack said as he placed said card on his blade. "And when he's Normal or Special summoned I can send 1 card from my hand to activate his effect."
Zack discards the Action Card he picked up to pay the cost.
"You see." Serena said. "Zack grabbed an Action Card to use Albaz's effect so he wouldn't have to use the other cards in his hand in case he needed them. That's the difference between using and playing your cards."
"Sugoi~…" the 3 kids said in awe, learning a good lesson.
"I wonder what his monster's effect is." Tristin said.
"I can now use Albaz and fuse him with monsters on your side of the field!" Zack revealed.
"You/He can what?!" those that didn't know exclaimed in shock.
Atem and Himiko didn't shout like the rest, but they were surprised.
"I fuse Fallen of Albaz with Gameciel to Fusion Summon Level 8: Sprind the Irondash Dragon!" Zack announced.

Appearing on Zack's field was a hovercraft that had dragon-like qualities. Everyone besides Serena, Rin and Sora where shocked at the summoning. Ruri was told about it by her sister's, but to see it in person was another thing.
'Those fools never said he could do this!' Himika thought. 'Does that mean he's been holding back?'
'No way.' the LDS girl thought while clutching her fist. 'Could he be better than me at Fusion?'
"And if you thought I'm done, think again." Zack said. "I tune my Level 1 Unknown Synchron with Level 7 Radian!"
Both Unknown and Radian fly up into the air. Unknown became a green ring that passed over Radian, who turned into 7 stars.
"That thing was a Tuner?!" the bokken holder cried out.
"Your darn right it was!" Rin answered.
"I Synchro Summon Level 8: Beelze of the Diabolic Dragons!" Zack yelled as a green light erupted.

"And since I'm a nice guy, I'll let you in on a little secret." Zack said. "Beelze can't be destroyed by battle or card effects."
"No way!" Hokuto gasped.
"Why did Zacknii-chan tell him about his Synchro monster's effect?" Ayu asked.
"I think he has a plan." Yugi said.
"Next I'll activate the effect of Springans Kitt in my hand." Zack said. "Since I have a Fusion Monster that has Fallen of Albaz as needed material, I can special summon her."
The fox eared girl took her place on Zack's field.
"Now I play the spell card Xyz Reception." Zack said while playing said card.

"This spell lets me special summon a monster from my hand, as long as there is a monster on my field that has a matching level." Zack explained. "I Special Summon Level 4 Albaz the Ashen!"
Appearing next to Kitt was Ashen.
"The price for this summoning is that Ashen loses his effect and both ATK and DEF are dropped to 0." Zack continued. "Well his DEF was already 0 so just his ATK, but it's worth it."

"Wait a minute…" Hokuto said. "Don't tell me you're about to…"
"Fine, I won't say it." Zack said with a smirk. "I'll just show you. I create the Overlay Network with my 2 Level 4 monsters!"
Kitt and Ashen turn into balls of light and flew into the vortex.
"I Xyz Summon Rank 4: Queen Dragun Djinn!" Zack announced.

"I don't believe it!" the bokken holder said in shock.
'So this is your power Zack.' Reiji thought as he watched from his hiding spot.
"Battle!" Zack announced. "Queen Dragun attacks you directly!"
Djinn strummed her harp and sent fireballs at Hokuto, hitting him.
"Gahh!" he cried out as he landed on his back.
Hokuto LP: 4000 – 1800
"Yay Zack-nii/Zacknii-chan!" the YSD kids cheered.
"You've got'em now Zack!" Skip cheered.
"1 more attack to finish him off!" Serena cheered.
"Sprind attacks you directly and finishes the duel!" Zack said.
Sprind's thrusters flare to life as it heads towards Hokuto. Said Xyz specialist quickly looks around to find an Action Card. Upon seeing 1 close to him, he rolls to it and grabs it before quickly playing it.
"I activate the Action Card Big Escape!" Hokuto said. "This card ends the battle phase!"
Sprind soars over Hokuto's head and flies back to Zack's field.
"Shoot!" Jonouchi said while snapping his fingers. "He was so close."
"Seems fate favours me by giving me that Action Card." Hokuto said with a smirk.
"You were simply lucky to be close enough to it." Zack said. "But luck can only help you so many times."
"We'll see." Hokuto said as he put his fingers on his deck. "Now I-"
"Hold it." Zack interrupted. "I never ended my turn."
"Nani?" Hokuto asked. "What more can you do?"
"This." Zack answered as he held up his disk. "I activate a monster's effect in my extra deck!"
The extra deck slot opens, and a card comes out.
"From your extra deck?!" Hokuto askes.
"You don't think…" Serena started to ask with a smile.
"Yeah." Yuya said. "He's bringing that Xyz monster out."
"Since a Xyz Monster on my field successfully launched an attack, I can use it to Xyz Summon an Xyz Monster to the field!" Zack explained. "With Rank 4 Queen Dragun Djinn, I rebuild the Overlay Network!"
The vortex appears again, and Djinn jumped into it.
'This is just like…!' Hokuto thought in shock.
"I Xyz Summon Rank 12: Divine Arsenal AA-Zeus – Sky Thunder!" Zack announced as he took the card from the disk and slammed it on the blade.
The enormous Xyz monster took its place behind Zack, looking down at the opponent. Everyone that already saw the monster look at it in awe, while those who's first time seeing it look at it in shock. If this was a cartoon, Skip's jaw would've hit the floor.
"R-R-Rank…12…?" Hokuto stuttered in shock and fear. "T-That's impossible. No one has an Xyz monster that strong."
"Well I do." Zack said a little smugly. "That's why I attacked with my Djinn first, in case you got lucky."
"No way." the LDS challengers said.
"How can anyone have such a monster?" the chairwoman asked.
"Look at the size of that thing!" Anzu said.
"I would but I can only see half of it's body!" Tristian commented as he was pressing his face on the glass to get a better look.
"Now I end my turn." Zack said. "You can go ahead."
"I d-draw." Hokuto said timidly.
Turn 3: Hokuto
'Damn it!' Hokuto thought. 'Ever since I mastered Xyz Summoning, I've won 40 consecutive duels without taking any damage. This was supposed to be number 41, but this punk is ruining it! I refuse to have my winning streak broken by someone from a loser duel school!'
Hokuto looks at the card he drew and smirked.
'Normally I would summon it if I had another Pleiades on the field,' he thought. 'But I need power to protect myself. Besides, I know this field and where the Action Cards will spawn, so I can save my monster if I need to.'
Hokuto raised the card he drew in the air.
"I summon Constellar Sombre!" Hokuto announced as he played the card.

"Constellar Sombre's effect activates!" Hokuto continued. "Once per turn, by banishing a Constellar monster in my GY, I can add a Constellar monster in my GY to my hand! I banish Constellar Algiedi to add Constellar Kaus to my hand! Also, on the turn that this effect activates, I can summon 1 Constellar monster."
"Let me guess." Zack spoke up. "You plan on summoning Kaus, right?"
"Yes I am." Hokuto said. "I summon Constellar Kaus!"
Once again, Kaus appeared on the field beside Sombre.
"Now you can 2 monsters with the same level's again." Zack said. "I can only see this going 2 ways. You either Xyz summon a Rank 4 monster or do the same thing as last time."
"*grr* Shut up!" Hokuto growled. "I activate Kaus's effect twice to raise both his and Sombre's level by 1!"

"I overlay Level 5 Sombre and Kaus!" Hokuto shouted. "Xyz Summon Rank 5: Constellar Pleiades!"
"So he had another Pleiades." Zarc commented.
"You probably thought that I only had 1 Pleiades and that you were save by getting rid of it, but too bad." Hokuto mocked. "While you might've taken me by surprise, it was within my expectations."
"And what you're doing is within my expectations." Sora muttered disappointingly. "Good thing this'll end with Zack-nii's next turn."
"Not good." Zarc said. "Now he'll use his monster's effect and target Zeus due to being a Rank 12 monster with an unknown effect."
(Which is why I told him about Beelze's effect.) Zack responded.
'Normally I would use Pleiades effect and get rid of his unknown Xyz monster,' Hokuto thought. 'But his Synchro monster can't be destroyed by battle or card effect's so even if I get an Action Card that increases my monsters attack it won't matter. Meaning if I get rid of Zeus now and then Beelze during his turn he could summon a stronger monster, destroy mine and leave me wide open during his turn. That's if he doesn't have a way of negating my monster's effect.'
Hokuto seeing no other way of doing this makes up his mind.
"I activate Pleiades's effect." Hokuto said. "I remove 1 overlay unit and target Beelze, but since it's a Synchro monster it goes back to your extra deck!"
Pleiades stabs an overlay and Beelze bursts into motes of light.
"Ah, I see now." Zarc said. "You told him about Beelze's effect to draw his attention away from Zeus. Smart thinking."
(And now his defeat is certain.) Zack said.
"I've met the requirements." Hokuto said. "Tell me Zack Hikari, did you think you're the only one that can Xyz Summon using an Xyz monster that's already on the field?"
A card pops out of his extra deck slot, and he grabs it.
"I can Xyz Summon this card by using 1 Constellar Xyz monster and I choose Constellar Pleiades!" Hokuto announced.
"Another Xyz?" Yuya asked.
"And it's almost the same way Zack brought Zeus out." Gong said.
"With Constellar Pleiades I Xyz Summon!" Hokuto yelled. "Appear, Rank 6 Constellar Ptolemy M7!"

A dragon then appeared on Hokuto's field with a roar.
"A treasure as great as Pendulum Summon is wasted in this school." Himiko said. "The best plan for everyone is to put it under LDS's control."
The YSD group looked at her with various expressions but then turned back to the field upon hearing Zack's voice.
"And with that, you've sealed your fate fool." Zack said.
"Huh?" Hokuto asked as Zack threw his arm up.
"I activate Zeus's effect!" Zack announced. "By using 2 overlay units, all cards on both our fields besides him are sent to the GY!"
2 of the orbs circling around the gigantic Xyz monster entered his wings. They then began to build up energy.
"It had such an effect?" Hokuto exclaimed in shock.
"So that's why Zack revealed Beelze's effect." Atem said. "He wanted to draw attention away from Zeus so he could use it's effect for this very moment."
'I need an Action Card!' Hokuto thought. 'Luckly, I excel on this field and know when and where they show up. Speaking of which…'
He looks in the direction of a temple as a falling light lands on top of it.
'Right on schedule.' Hokuto thought. "Ptolemy! Get me to that temple, quickly!"
The mechanical dragon picks it's master up and flies towards said temple.
"Oh no!" Anzu gasped "He's going to get an Action Card!"
"But Zack's not stopping him." Tristin pointed out.
"How come?" Yuzu asked.
"Maybe he knows it's pointless to try and stop him since he's too far away." the bokken holder smirked.
'No.' Reiji thought. 'It's because Zack knows that no Action Card will help him.'
Not only that but Reiji noticed something about what Zack said. Hokuto grabbed the Action Card and after seeing what it does, played it.
"I activate the Action Card Mirror Barrier!" Hokuto announced. "I can target 1 monster on the field, and it can't be destroyed by card effects this turn. The monster I choose is my Constellar Ptolemy M7!"
A mirror manifests in front of Ptolemy. A huge shockwave is unleashed from Zeus, causing Sprind to become sparkles. Hokuto starts to laugh.
"What a waste of an effect, since you've only helped me!" Hokuto mocked. "It's not that surprising really! LDS is the highest-ranking school there is that only teaches the best duelists! Someone from such a rundown hobble place like this could never beat-"
He was cut off when the shockwave hit Ptolemy as it too had become sparkles. Everyone had looks of surprise and shock on their faces, except Reiji.
Hokuto slowly looks to the motes of light that use to be his Xyz monster.
"…me…" Hokuto said as the motes disappeared before looking at Zack. "But… how…?"
"Isn't it obvious?" Zack asked. "My Xyz monster's effect sent yours to the GY."
"But that's impossible!" Hokuto snapped. "The Action Card should've protected mine from your monster's destruction effect!"
"Oh~?" Zack smirked. "And when did I ever say that Zeus's effect destroys other cards?"
"Nani?" his opponent asked.
"I said Zeus sends all other cards on our fields to the GY." Zack explained. "Nothing in there about destroying them. Also, once per turn, if you destroy a card on my field in any way, I can attach an overlay to Zeus using a card from my hand, deck or extra deck."
Once more, everyone was shocked. Unless a card listed as "not effected by other card effects", they could be swept away by this Rank 12 monster. Entire fields wiped clean. Strategies and set ups, gone in an instant. Plus, he can refill his monster's overlay units and allowing him to unleash the effect whenever he wants!
'Seems I was right.' Reiji thought.
"Now then." Zack said. "I'm guessing you can't do anything else this turn can you."
Hokuto grunted, not wanting to admit it but having no choice.
"I end my turn." Hokuto said before running off.
As he was, Zack put his fingers on his deck.
"I draw." Zack said while doing said action.
Turn 4: Zack
"Standby Phase." Zack said, as if counting down until his opponent's defeat.
Said opponent was running, looking desperately for another Action Card.
'Action Card!' Hokuto thought. 'I need an Action Card!'
"Main Phase 1." Zack said.
Hokuto finally saw an Action Card appear on the ground and began running towards it.
"Battle Phase." Zack said. "Divine Arsenal AA-Zeus – Sky Thunder attack Hokuto directly!"
Zeus held up a hand towards Hokuto and began charging electrical energy. Hokuto made it to the Action Card and picked it up.
'Yes!' Hokuto cheered in his head. 'Now I'll stop his attack and-'
However, when Hokuto read the card his blood run cold. It was an effect that would increase his monster's attack.
"Let me guess." Zack said. "That Action Card you picked up won't be able to help you."
Hokuto looks at Zack.
"That's the thing about these Action Cards." Zack said. "Duelists rely on them far too much and end up in situations like this."
He then looks at the kids watching.
"Let this be a lesson to you Tatsuya, Futoshi and Ayu." Zack said. "Don't forsake your own decks in favor of chance cards that'll fail you in the end."
The 3 kids looked at him in awe and decided to take what he said to heart. The older kids of YSD smiled at their friend. Skip, still in the control's booth, gave Zack a nod.
"Zeus! End this match!" Zack ordered.
The Xyz monster shot a laser at Hokuto and wiping out the rest of his LP's.
Hokuto LP: 1800 – 0
Winner: Zack
