Episode 2: A Young, Orange Fox Takes Off

DISCLAIMER: The following is a fan work based on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. All rights to the characters belong to SEGA, except for the few original characters introduced. I'm not making any money off of this, so it's all fair game. In my opinion anyways. Now, on with the story!

"If the Doc really is back, that means he must be here for a reason," Sonic theorized to himself as he traversed Emerald Hills, a popular tourist location. The view, apparently, was to die for. "While sure, he's crazy. But he always plans ahead. There's gotta be somethin' here that he wants."

Mid pondering, Sonic almost ran into a metallic crab. Luckily, thanks to his swift actions, he curled into a ball and smashed it to pieces. Stopping himself, the hedgehog glanced back at the little critter climbing out of the destroyed robot.

"A crabmeat," Sonic noted, recalling his previous encounter with his nemesis. "Definitely the work of Robotnik."

"Okay," The blue blur thought, "Dr. Robotnik is here. Wonder what he's looking for."

In the distance he could hear the sound of a plane. Looking up, Sonic's eyes widened. Was that the Tornado? "Okay, so someone just stole my plane."

As the plane lowered, Sonic was able to dash up the side of a giant tree and propel himself through the air. Grabbing onto the plane's wing, the spikey hedgehog dragged himself to the pilot.

"Wha-?!" To his surprise, the culprit was none other than Miles himself. "What are you doin' here?!"

Miles, surprised by the stunt his hero performed, widened his eyes. "Sonic, what are you doing?! Do ya have any idea how risky this is?"

Sonic, wind rushing against him, stared at the fox. Over the plane's engine, he yelled, "How old are you again?!"

"Six!"

Just as Sonic was about to respond, a swarm of giant, robotic bees flew up to the Tornado. This immediately caused the blue blur to feel concerned for the young pilot's safety.

"Aw, shoot. Buzz Bombers…" The hedgehog groaned.

Miles glanced at them in slight confusion. "Buzz… what now?"

"Buzz Bombers," Sonic replied, his free hand curling into a fist. "They're nothin' but trouble!"

The badniks began to fire at the two, showcasing they're capabilities.

"Hold on, buddy!" Sonic shouted over the engine, before diving off of the wing. Miles started to become frantic and concerned for his new friend.

Curling into a ball, Sonic bounced off a couple of badniks, freeing the birds, known as flickies, within. Miles, who was trying his best to stay in control, tried to swoop below Sonic and stop him from plummeting towards the ground below. Unfortunately, he wasn't the most experienced pilot.

Missing his target, Miles accidentally clipped a few palm trees near the beach. Meanwhile, Sonic was able to grab onto a nearby buzzbomber mid-fall. Looking down at the plane, he grinned in determination. "I'm coming, Miles!" He dived off of the struggling badnik and was sent flying towards the fox.

Out of sheer luck, Sonic landed on the plane just in time. "Ya gotta watch out, buddy! Don't wanna crash now, do we?"

"I'm trying! Uh oh," Miles clutched the controls. "Hold on, we're in for a rough landing!"

The Tornado smashed itself against the rocky surface of a nearby cliff. As this event unfolded, Sonic was holding onto the wing for dear life. Once the red biplane came to a stop, Sonic jumped off.

"Woo, that sure was a rocky landing, eh Miles?" Sonic chuckled.

Silence.

"You good bro?" He asked, walking back over to the plane. He looked inside. Miles was passed out, probably from exhaustion and fright. "Yeah, I don't blame him. It's not every day you get to crash a plane. At least we're fine…"

"Errhh..." The two-tailed fox was staring up at a wooden ceiling he'd never seen before. "What the…"

Suddenly, it all came back to him. He snapped back up in fright. "Sonic?! Where is he-"

"Relax," Someone laughed, leaning against the door frame. "What's got ya so shaken up, man?"

Miles' face lit up. He climbed out of the bed and dashed towards the familiar blue hedgehog. "Sonic, you're okay!"

"Course I am." Sonic answered simply while giving the kit a thumbs up.

"Where are we, though?" Miles asked as he examined the room. "Last I checked, we were in Emerald Hills."

"We're in this place called Diamond Harbor," Sonic pointed his thumb behind him. "Some sort of seaside village."

As the two were chatting away, a young rabbit women was walking in the hall outside. She was about to open the door all the way, but paused as she listened to what the fox was saying.

"Sorry 'bout crashing your plane, Sonic," The young fox apologized, rubbing the back of his head. "It was my first time."

"Pffft!" The hedgehog waved his hand. "It's cool. The Tornado doesn't seem too banged up. Besides, not many six-year olds I know can even PILOT a plane."

"Ahem."

The two froze and turned towards the door, which was now completely open. Miles, confused as to who this was, looked up at Sonic.

"Who's this?" The two-tailed kit whispered to the older hedgehog.

"Ah, uh, Vanilla!" Sonic forced a smile, patting Miles' back. "Is lunch ready?"

"What's this about him flying an airplane?" Vanilla asked, arms crossed. "How old are you again, dear?"

"Six."

The self-proclaimed fastest thing alive grinned nervously. "Now, I know what it looks like…"

Vanilla gave him a stern look.

"Eh, Erm…"

The rabbit sighed. "You're endangering a young child, Sonic! Not to mention a child like yourself!"

As they were arguing, a drone was hovering outside the window. It was spying on them, sending video feed to a monitor in a dark, metallic room.

"So," A plump man said, stroking his long mustache with a frown. "The rumors are true, it seems he really is here…"

He got up from his seat and rubbed his hands together. A grin formed on his face. "No matter. Sonic is no match for me this time!" He laughed. "Oh-ho-ho, he'll never know what hit him!"

After a week or two of writer's block (a day for you, due to me uploading these two days in a row), I finally completed this chapter. Thank the heavens… It wasn't easy to figure out where I wanted this story to go. It started off a little more accurate to Sonic 2's plot, but as you can see, well… I took some creative liberties.

I feel that Emerald Hills should've been explored more and featured more Sonic 2 badniks. And Vanilla's inclusion feels very rushed and last minute. I also forgot to showcase the Special Zone and the first Chaos Emerald. (On a semi-related note, the green emerald is the best. In my opinion anyways.) I also have fewer words than in the previous chapter.

On the other hand, I don't want to rewrite this whole chapter. You get what you get and you don't get upset, I suppose. Next chapter will probably focus more on Chaos Emeralds.
