Chapter 13 Orange:An Assassin Tale

About an hour into their drive the sun had setted as the night sky liiuminated them in the dark. Qrow was driving for a bit as he looked around for a suitable spot to set up camp.

"So Ren was it?"qrow asked as ren looked up from the back.

"Yes"ren simple replied to qrow

"Since you and over here have been in the area. Know anywhere we can set up camp close by?"qrow said

They waited for a minute as Ren seemed to be thinking about where they were. Qrow decided to stop the jeep to let the kid get a lay of the land. Ren stood up as he looked around the forest area around them. Then as he looked around he pointed toward a nearby forest path.

"Over their. Theirs an area over their we can set up camp. It's safe"ren said as they drove over toward the woods. Though the jeep was too big to travel through the woods. They looked around for a bit until a small inlet where they can park the jeep. As they parked it qrow went to the back as he pulled out a tarp it seems.

Ruby raised an eyebrow"uhh what the heck is that?"ruby questioned

Qrow had the bundle out as he loosened the straps on it. Then he grabbed it as he rolled it out onto the ground.

"This is something our dear bashira said we might need."qrow replied

Jaune stratched his head"that didn't answer the question exactly, what is it?"jaune asked

"Its a grass canopy mainly hunters in the forest use them to watch for their prey"ren replied as he decided to help qrow with it.

Jaune was surrpsied that ren knew about something like that though maybe his parents taught him a thing or too about hunting for wildlife.

Ren walked over to one side of the tarp while qrow walked to the others. They both grabbed the edge as they walked over the jeep and threw it over ontop of the jeep. The jeep was covered in a dark green looking tarp that seemed to blend in with the foliage around it.

"Huh I can't really see it nice job thinking of bringing this old man"mercury complimented

"Well when your a huntsman use all the tools provided to you. Come on lets go set up camo"qrow said as he grabbed a small pack along with the others. They followed ren for a good ten minutes until they got to clearing that had plenty of space for them. Along with a decent size lake next to them.

Rogue looked in awe at the place"Whoa this is beautiful how'd you know this was here?"she asked looking at Ren but he simply ignored her as he began to set up his tent along with nora helping him.

"Ummm okay that was rude"she said quality to herself as she walked over to get her tent set decided to help her out as the two might be sharing a a bit of time the group set up about three tents. Though qrow just layed a sleeping bag out near a fire they made.

"Alright guess we'll have to share some tents. "Jaune stated

"Me and uh ren can share a tent"nora said as ren nodded agreeing with her.

"Alright me and mercury can share a tent"rogue said as she leaned up against her boyfriend who sighed as he patted her head.

But qrow looked at the group relizing that would mean jaune and ruby would have to share a tent and he didn't seem to like that one bit.

"Nope knight in shining armor and metal legs will sleep in the same tent"qrow said as rogue and mercury looked at him strange for a second.

"Uhhhh why can't I share a tent with my boyfriend?"rogue said motioing toward mercury.

Ruby was slowly piecing it together until it clicked"oh I know why because that would mean me and jaune would have to share a tent"ruby said as jaune blushed slightly.

"Oh yeah your right uh…mercury buddy old pal bunk mates?"jaune said nervously as mercury just shrugged his shoulder as he moved his stuff to jaune tent.

"Alright that fine just don't hug him in his sleep like a certain wolf faunus I know"Rogue joked as nora laughed a little at that. Jaune did too remembering the day him and his team walked out to see rogue leader half dressed running down the hall.

"So how exactly did you find this spot ren did come here often or something?"jaune questioned as ren turned away as he kneeled on his knees.

He was looking toward the lake as he recalled the time he came here with his father many years ago.

Ten years ago Kuryuri

In the extact same clearing the group was staying at right now but except for them a seven year old ren who wore extactly what he wore in beacon during his time their. But right now he was looking at the lake at his relfeciton.

As he stared at it soon enough he saw something swim underneath it which caught his eye. Young ren kept looking at it until something jumped from the water. A small turtle jumped out of the water scaring young ren as he fell backwards onto the ground.

"Aghh"young ren softly yelped as he landed on his butt.

Behind him a man could be heard laughing as a pair of footsteps could be heard coming toward him.

"Don't be afraid son he's just one of my many beautiful creatures of our world"he said as he placed a hand young ren shoulder.

Young ren looked up to see a tall man with black hair that was streak with gray pulled back into a ponytail, along with a mustahce and goatee sporting it. His attire consisted of a sleeveless green tailcoat over a long sleeves white shirt, he wore black pants with tucked into open toe sandals, a black sash with a singlue pouch on it. He wore a brown archers gloves on his left hand.

"Uh..yeah"young replied as he looked at the same turtle walking up to him. He got a little scared of it but the man known as Li Ren reassured him.

"Don't be afraid the worst thing you can do it let fear consume you"li ren said wisly as he gently lowered his hand placing it on the turtle. It looked up at him as it slowly made its way over to the hand man. He picked it up as he knelt down presenting it to his son.

Young ren hesitantly reached for it as he closed his eyes expecting the worst. But nothing happened as he opened his eyes to see the small turtle close its eyes happy it sems.

Young ren looked a little surrpised by this smiling a little"its….not biting me"he stated as the older man nodded

"If you have the courage to do anything you just need to take action no matter the situation"li ren said wisly as young ren nodded as he looked at the lake.

Present

Ren took a deep breath exhaling"my father took me out here sometimes, it was nice"ren replied

"That nice…was he a huntsmans?"ruby asked innocently as ren looked at the lake notrepsonding at first as he sighed nodding yes. It seemed he didn't want to continue that conversation.

After a bit of time of time jaune and mercury went off to gather some kindling for the fire and soon returned. With this they could keep warm and cook some of the food they brought.

"Finally what took you so long"rogue groaned as mercury rolled his eyes as he set the kindling in the fire. Ren walked over as he set up three logs in a tipi with them. He grabbed a small flynt and steel as he tried to start the fire but from a certain guanlent.

"I got this kid"ember said as a small flame shot from the gaunlent lighting the fire. Ren looked disappointed but put the fire tool away. Soon enough ruby along with jaune started to make the food.

"So…any of you guys gone camping before?"ruby questioned because she actually surprised they all know so much about it.

"Well me and my family would go camping at a place close by called Shion. Their are these beautiful hiking trials their and I also got my own tent because I was special"jaune declared

"Uh huh why that jauney boy?"rogue replied with a smirk as jaune nveorusly laughed.

"My sister wouldn't stop braiding my hair everytime"jaune said which my the group laughed at his plee.

"What you didn't like the new look?"ruby asked

"Well no I don't look look in pigtails…I kinda like the warriors wolftail look"jaune said as mercury cupped his chin.

"I can kinda see it with your knight look you got going on"mercury said

"Hmm you know i can see it too but I also see you in pigtails"rogue said as everyone laughed a little.

"What about you rogue let me guess…your uncle?"ruby asked as rogue gently nodded in response. She began to mess with the red cloth around her hand.

"Yeah uncle dravan would take me,dad, eira and mom out to a little spot in the anima every year when we visited. A long time ago when we went me and him went fishing. While the others were…waiitng for us."rogue continued

"And then…we fought against a fish and I thought I caught a serpent or something. But no it was just a tiny fish…though uncle spun some dumb tall tale about us fighting tooth and nail for it"rogue finished chuckling alittle while she laguehd.

Qrow smiled at that"you know port and him did rub off on each other back int he day it seems"qrow said

"Oh yeah I forgot you went to Beacon back then to. Wait wasn't most of rogue family on a team together"ruby asked as qrow nodded

"Yep along Kali Belladonna though she aint much of a huntresses nowadays"qrow said to the groups surprise

"Wait…blakes mom went to beacon?"nora asked a little invested actually.

"Seriously did everyone in someones family head to beacon"jaune added

"Seems so kid let me see who else went their…their was Declan Blair that wolf chicks dad. Him and me sparred one time…bastard chipped one of my teeth but I got his tail"qrow started as he tried to recall the other teams their.

"Their was also a Team SAND and diego a guy on declan team, a sabertooth faunus who had a heart of gold back in the day. Though he died a pretty long time ago during a fight."qrow added

"Wait whos team SAND, they gotta be important to to mention them"mercury said

"Yeah who are they?"ruby asked a little excited.

Qrow stared into the fire as he thought about them recalling it was three faunus and one human on the team.

"Lets see the leader was Sienna Khan, Amber Jarnefeldt, Nadia Walker and Diamona Ghastly"qrow said making a few of them surrpsied by two of those was surprised to hear that she went to beacon actually. Though mercury was also surrpsied by this because amber went to beacon.

"Wait thats…zanes mom…nadia"jaune said as qrow raised an eyebrow at this and got what he meant.

"Oh your dead friend…well lets just hope that girl can hold up after hearing about his death alrgiht"qrow reassured

"Yeah…though that amber girl where have I heard of her before"rogue asked

Mercury sighed"she was cinder…mom"he answered as he stared deeply into the fire.

"I remember now her picture was at that party we threw before the final round"ruby added

"Yeah though a little surprised she went their I didn't really look at the records of who went to beacon"jaune said

"You aint gonna find everyone their…though from what i'm guessing she was the previous fall maiden am I right?"qrow asked looking at mercury who stared at the fire.

"Yeah she….was….she and cinder were close"mercury replied as he had a sadden look on his face.

The group got a little silent as rogue looked at mercury who was deep in thought. But she kinda wanted to hear more about how he met cinder and amber.

"So umm merc…you said you traveled with Amber and Cinder after your dad did you guys exactly meet?"rogue asked trying to cheer him up.

The silver haired boy sighed a little as he rubbed his eyes"about three years ago is when I met her,Cinder and Emerald"mercury begun his tale

Three years ago mistral

In the woods of the anima somewhere was a simple log cabin that was built ontop of a small hill. It was early in the morning as dawn was approaching soon. Though in a simple room was a fifteen year old boy who was laying in a simple bed.

He was underneath his covers asleep but inside the cabin a loud thud could be heard. Along with several grunting noises and then suddenly a loud gun shot went off. Mercury went wide eyed as he threw his sheets off jumping out of bed.

He was wearing a gray zip up jacket with the collar zipepd all the way up. He wore a apir fo dark orange pants with a pair of black boots. Nearby on a dessor was a simpel pistol as he grabbed it.

"Crap..don't tell me their here now"mercury whisped as he quietly walked over toward the door. He creaked it open as he looked into what was a simple living room. Their in the living room was his father as he fought tooth and nail against some tresppaser in the cabin.

Mercury father wore a red t-shirt along with a pair of black pants and green boots. He had a toned physique to him and his hair was white and short. While he seemed to stand tall as the men with him were different.

The men in question wore armor over a dakr purple long sleeve shirt with dark gray pants. Along with armor on their chest and pauldrons with vambraces on their arms. They were silver in color but on one of the pauldrons on the right shoulder was a symbol.A blindfold with an open eye on it colored dark also wore purple hoods over their faces with the same symbol drawn on in white

The men attack marcus black with knives stabbing for his chest but he caught the assasins arm. Then he elbow him in the gut causing him to gasp for air. Then marcus quickly elbow dropped him before putting his boot on the man neck. The second came at him but marcus jabbed him in the throat as the man grabbed his throat holding it.

Then marcus pulled the man back twisting the man arm behind his back. Marcus looked anger at him.

"How many of you are their?"he questioned as the man laughed.

"Worrie not vermin our comrades are the least of your concerns right now"he spat as marcus twisted his arm tighter.

"Tell me how many of you are their or i'll snap your arm in half"he threatened as the man just laughed at him while the one under his boot did as well. But soon enough marcus put pressure on the man larynx as he choked for air. Marcus didn't care as soon enough the man choking stopped as he layed motionless on the ground.

"Dad what the hell is going on?"mercury asked as marcus looked over at him shocked.

"Merc go out the back…don't worry my friend will-"marcus begun before the man broke free from marcus restraints as he dislocated his shoulder. A loud snap could be heard but the man lunged at mrcus burying his blade into his side.

Marcus gasped a little as the assassin just laughed at this"you'll pay for killing the all seeing one vermin"he said.

But then mercury took aim as he shot the man in the knees. The man screamed in pain as he fell to the ground as both his knees were shot out. Marcus cluthced his side as blood began to pour out of it. He dropped to one knee as he coughed a little.

Mercury looked shock"dad…no.. …please be alright"mercury begged as he checked on his father. He had a pretty bad stab wound on his side and it seemed to hit one of his kidneys it seems.

Marcus coughed"i'm fine son….though…guess those bastards finally caught up with us"marcus said as he groaned trying to walk toward the back door. As he did the man with the shot out knees just began to laugh manically a little.

While he did soon enough he rumaged through his shirt to reveal a small fire dust bomb. Marcus went wide eyed as he looked around for the quickest exit. He looked toward a window that led outside and he looked at his son.

"You will die here today vermin!"the man shouted as he pressed a button.

But marcus quickly rushed over hugging mercury as he provided a protective shield over him. Then he ran toward the window jumping through it as the glass smashed open. As he did a fie ball like explosion launched the two outside of the cabin.

Mercury layed their in his fathers arms groaning as he opened his eyes. The explosion blast shot them out of the house but he didn;t feel any pain except in his ears that were father still had his arms wrapped around him tight.

"Dad…we made it…you alright old man?"merucyr asked as he looked at his father.

He looked pale as he kept coughing as blood drippled from his mouth. The old assasin was taking shallow breaths as he let his son go. Mercury went wide eyed as he began to shake his father.

"No…no…god dammit…stay awake you dumbass"mercury begged as he shook marcus.

Marcus kept coughing as blood came from his mouth. Mercury looked to see some glass shards in his father back which worried him. Their was a lot and one seemed to hit his lungs as long jagged piece stuck out of his back.

"Dad…come on please get up dammit"mercury begged as tears began to well up in eyes.

Marcus looked up to his son offering his right hand as mercury was confused before he took it. He returned the gesture tightening his grip with a smile that mercury returned.

"Your a good kid….son….i'm sorry….i'm sorry for ….hitting you"marcus begun as he coughed wheezing a little as he groaned in pain from the smallest movement.

Mercury shook his head"its fine…I know…I-i know moms death was hard…but hold on…your friend should be here soon"mercury begged as a small tear escaped his eyes.

Though Marcus shook his head as he took a deep breath soon enough he became shrouded in a light black like aura. Then he smiled at his son as soon enough mercury aura activated as mercury looked at his aura.

"What..what are you doing?"mercury questioned.

"You've earned….it son….i'm proud of you….amber will take care of you"marcus said as he glanced over down a small hill that led up to a cabin. Mercury looked up with tears in his eyes toward three people walking up with sadden expression on their face.

One was girl with medium brown skin and dark red eyes. Her hair was light mint green style into a ponytail. Along with that she wore a short olive colored crop top, with a pair of chaps that were torn with a belt wrapped around it. Beneath those chaps she wore a pair of dark green pants and plan dark brown flat with some white half gloves.

With a second girl who had short black hair. She wore a red dress that had separated sleeves with gold lining it. Along witht that it was held up by straps tied around her neck in a bow. She wore heeled shoed made of typical material.

While third was a women who had a light brown complexion with shoulder length brown hair. Their was a beauty mark below her left wore a green hooded cloak that hide her entire outfit. But she wore an off white blouse with frill detailing on the shoulder, pleated lower half with central split, alongside a brown vest that had three straps and golden lining around the collar. She had on a dark brown corset with matching pants. Along with a pair of brown thigh high boots with large cuffs and golden armour plating covering the boots up to her knees.

The older women soften her gaze as she slowly approached mercury. She kneeled next to marcus as he was taking several shallow breaths. She smiled as she placed a hand on his.

"I will marcus…you can count on that"amber reassured as marcus smiled a little. Then he slowly closed his eyes as mercury went wide eyed. He began to shake him several times.

"Walk up…god dammit walk up you bastard!"mercury cried as he had tears streaming down his face. While he continued this soon Amber walked over embracing the silver haired boy as he looked at his father who layed their dead.

"Shh its alright your safe….I promised marcus to keep you safe. I'll keep that promise"amber reassured him as he just cried into her shoulder. A younger emerald walked over with a worried look as she gently waved to him.

"Umm i'm emerald susatari…i'm sorry for your loss"emerald commented

"Yes…i'm sure your father may have had his faults. But he did what any parent should do…protect their child. "Cinder said to mercury who nodded as he just sat their enough she let him go as mercury looked at his father with sadness in his eyes. Then he looked at a nearby storage shed with a shovel in it.

He walked over grabbing it as he began to dig his fahters grave. Amber noticed this as she walked over joining him along with cinder and emerald. As they helped bury the boide of marcus black

Present

"And…that how I met amber"mercury sadly said as a small tear escaped his eyes. The group looked at him with surrpise and worrie. Rogue looked at him as a couple tears escaped his eyes. She walked over as she gently hugged him.

Mercury sighed as he patted her on the back"thanks sunshine"mercury thanked as rogue nodded.

"No problem…though whos keeping first watch tonight?"rogue asked

"I'll do it you all get some much needed rest"jaune said as qrow raised an eyebrow at him.

"You sure about that kid? It'll be a long night out here"qrow asked as jaune nodded to him.

"Yeah I got this…don't worry besides we'll be in town tomorrow. I'll take a nap or something while where their""jaune replied

"Okay let us know if you want to switch shifts"ruby asked as her and rogue got into their tent. While mercury went into his and jaune. Ren and nora were already in their tents. They all slowly went to sleep while qrow stayed up with jaune for a while on his bed roll. Though soon enough the huntsman fell fast asleep with his hand on his head as he layed on his side. Qrow snored a little while he slept.

Jaune just stared at the fire as he kindled the fire with a stick sighing wondering how the others are doing right now.

In another part of the anima inside of a small cave was yang,emerald and bashira. The three found the cave as they decided to stay here for the night to avoid the grimm. Yang parked bumblebee in the back of the cave. But faced it forward for a quick exit if they needed to leave.

Bashira set up some small tents for the two tents for them. Because someone will have to keep watch for the night incase any grimm come at them. They got a good distance to their spot but needed shelter for the night.

Yang ate her food as the three talked for a bit to pass the time before they went to bed.

"So how long do you think it'll take us to get to the camp?"emerald asked as she ate her food.

"About a day and a half until we reach a small tribe outpost if I recall right…here"yang said pointing to a spot on the map her uncle gave her.

Bashira cupped her chin"hmmm yeah though you sure they'll be their and no move camp?"bashria replied as yang nodded

"Yeah usually when they move camp mom and uncle leaves these little marks tribe members can follow. though…I wonder what shes up to right now"yang said

"Beats me. Though remind me again how exactly your mom and uncle turned them from killers and bandits to protectors"bashira said

Emerald raised an eyebrow"wait I think you mentioned this back at Beacon before. But…how exactly did they change these guys to peaceful warriors?"emerald asked as she finished her food placing the container into a sealed bag.

They didn't want to attract any animals nearby into their little temporary sleeping spot.

"Well apparently from what I recalled my mom and uncle were sent to beacon as spies to fight agains the huntsman. But….apprently my grandma on moms side got sick of what we did. My grandfather married into their family and was against it"yang begun trying to recall what happened.

"People chalked it up to her having some mental illness or something though she apperently died from some chronic diseases or somethng. Grandpa wanted to keep the old ways but uncle and mom fought for the title of tribe leader and won. Soon after that they started to change the ways we did things. It was after…I turned…six is when this all happened."yang replied as that made emerald raise an eyebrow.

"Wait wasn't that around the time when ruby mom disappeared?"emerald asked

"Yeah you know I do recall it was around that time she was presumed dead. Well maybe shes still alive out here we'll never know"bashria added

"Well after that they worked as the tribe leader up until now. I get to see mom half of every year then uncle. Its…actually nice being apart of something like that."yang said

"Why because you practically got your own man servants?"emerald asked as yang and bashira chuckled at this.

Yang wiped a small tear"yeah though…we should get some sleep i'll take first watch"yang volunteered

"You sure you can do this yang you may pass out from boredom"bashira warned playfully

But she waved her arm at her"don't worry I got this you two get some sleep"yang reassured. The two didn't argue as they got into their tents for the night. As they slowly drifted to sleep yang tended to the fire. Then she looked at her pack for a second before grabbing it and unzipping it.

She then pulled out the book called"the man with two souls". She flipped over to a small bookmark on the book as she began to read it. At beacon blake showed her a few of her favorite books their. The cat faunus rattled off so many different books it was funny.

At first she found the book old and dry but shes decided to see why that girlfriend of her likes it. As she continued to read she messes with the black ribbion around her neck smiling a little. Then she looked out of the cave toward the broken moon as it illuminated the forest below.

"Where ever you are Blake….i'll find you"yang said to herself as she continued to read her book for a while as the night continued on like nothing was wrong. Though deeper near the forest far away from her and her sister group was tyrian. The scorpion faunus had his hands behind his back as he slowly walked down the path following the tires tracks with a smile on his face.

This chapter helped give some backstory for both mercury along with ren on their history in this universe. Seems that marcus wasn't that much of a bad father in this one compared to the other main cannon. Thanks for reading!
