"So do you want to give this a try?" Rosalina asked, flipping through the aged pages of the giant leatherback book on the stand.
"I'm having some concerns about trying this," Samus replied admittedly as she stood to the side. "I've never had an experience involving this kind of magic before. Besides, where did you even get this book from?"
"You know that section in the main library that is way in the back and isn't lit as brightly?"
"You're obviously pertaining to the side with all of the books that we've been told to be cautious about?"
Rosalina snapped her fingers. "Correct."
Samus sighed with disbelief. "Can't believe you completely disregarded the warning about those books."
"If there was something extremely wrong with any of them, don't you think Master Hand would have made sure they were properly disposed of?"
"I suppose you're right about that. That still doesn't take away from the dangers, though."
Roaslina shook her head at these words of worry. "I thought you said you have an upcoming battle against Bayonetta, Jigglypuff, and King Dedede," she said. "You want to be able to knock out your competition easily, don't you?"
"Right," Samus responded, "but not by using something that could have drastic consequences."
"Think about it. When was the last time a spell's ever caused harm to someone here?"
"You're literally telling me that you forgot about the incident with Isabelle. Y'know, with that transformation spell you were trying on yourself?"
Upon hearing this particular point in time being mentioned, Rosalina started to ponder about what happened then...
She was sure that this spell would work that way it was supposed to. She was already pretty knowledgeable when it came to several forms of magic, so she was certain that she had the process to this down. If it all went according to plan, she would be over the moon with happiness about it this afternoon.
Rosalina grabbed her handy wand that sat by the book she had been reading from, both mentally and physically prepared to begin the casting of the magic. The art of transformation was something she read up on recently and took a newfound interest in, so she had been intrigued to try it on herself and see what happened.
The archaic words were spoken, each syllable pronounced carefully to avoid backfire, and her wand was waved in the motion the book instructed her to.
"Animalia transformalia!" she proclaimed as she finished the process.
She was doing it all perfectly until she heard a creaking sound come from behind her, causing her to lose focus for a brief moment.
The beam of light that she invoked, which was supposed to be casted to her to transform her, changed its direction. It rebounded several times against the walls of the room, eventually bouncing towards the doorway and out to the living room.
"Oh dear," Rosalina muttered to herself. "That's not good."
And it not being good was most certainly correct. Whoever the light encountered, since it was of an intelligent magical energy, would be affected by the power of the spell. A terrible surprise, she knew, was inbound for them.
Meanwhile, oblivious to the fact that this was happening at the moment, two of the many Smashers relaxed in the large entertainment room. It was favorited spot among the many people that occupied the mansion, so it made perfect sense for some of them to be congregated there on this lazier kind of day.
"What are you doing?" Wolf said in confusion. "Why are you stopping?"
"Because my character's at a red light," Isabelle replied nervously. She had been taking the video game he was introducing her to, which revolved around crime and driving, a bit too seriously. "You have to stop at those no matter what."
"You're supposed to try and get away," the lupine beckoned, pointing at the flat-screen television on the opposite side of the large room. "It don't matter what color the light is. Just go!"
"But there's people using the crosswalk," the yellow dog responded apprehensively. "You're supposed to let them cross, not run into them."
On the television screen, the words "Game Over" appeared before it faded to black. As the words asking if she wanted to quit or retry popped up, the canine set the controller down and let out a sigh.
"Gosh, that game's too stressful," she mumbled. "Those things they want you to do are all unethical."
"But that's what makes this game interesting," Wolf replied.
"I-I don't know, Wolf," Isabelle breathed in response, shaking her head. "I'd rather play something that's a lot less… violent, you know?"
Meanwhile, she remained completely unaware of the blue light from Rosalina's spell bolting directly behind her. She didn't even realize that it landed behind her there as the conversation between the two continued. However, a few seconds later, she did feel a strange shiver coming over her, and her body suddenly felt a tad strange.
She paid little attention to this sensation until Wolf started to look back at her in shock, now at a loss of words. He pointed a claw at her with his mouth now hanging open.
Isabelle wasn't sure just yet why he was suddenly acting so strange. "What's the matter, Wolf?" she asked him curiously.
Wolf pointed over to the other side of the room, where a large mirror had been placed. She turned her head in that direction, believing that he meant to look that way, and saw what happened to her when she gazed at her reflection.
She saw that she was now on all fours, just like the Duck Hunt dog that lived here in the mansion. Her body had completely changed into this form unexpectedly, the only things remaining the same about her being the red hairband on the top of her head and the matching ribbon tie around her neck.
"Gah!" she cried out in horror. "Don't look at me!"
Wolf regained his ability to say something once again. "What the hell just happened?"
"I don't know," Isabelle exclaimed with uncertainty, "but somebody better fix it! I can't stay like this for long!"
The canid sitting nearby got a clue about what could have happened just then, uttering a low growl under his breath. "Rosalina and her damn spells..."
Remembering exactly how that went, Rosalina nodded her head, standing corrected. "Okay, that was a bad situation. I'll admit to that."
"And you said yourself it took a bit of time to get her to return to normal," Samus responded factually."And let's not forget about Min Min's special ramen during that potluck dinner."
"I don't remember anything about ramen that I was a part of."
"When you tried to do some spell on it before it was served to everybody. You know, to increase its positive energies or whatever?"
"How could anybody forget that?" Pit said as he came walking by, even though no one was asking for his input on things. "I swear that my taste buds still aren't the same since I ate from that ramen..."
Min Min hummed the song in her head to herself as she walked through the kitchen. From the moment the potluck started and everyone made their dish, she remained in a happy mood that couldn't be stripped from her.
Especially after seeing that the special ramen dish she made for everyone to try was almost gone. That alone told her that people were liking it, and she was glad to know that. She put a good amount of time and effort into putting a new recipe together, using the same techniques as she did before but adding some new ingredients.
"I'm back, everybody!" she said to the Smashers in her singsongy voice. "How's the-"
The first thing she was greeted upon reentering the grand dining room was the sound of groaning out of possible discomfort, as well as a good number of people that had been seated fanning themselves for some reason. The connection to those who were doing this was that everybody had a bowl of the ramen on their side of the table. The ramen that she first thought she did a pretty good job preparing.
I don't understand, she thought. I could've sworn I went easy on adding the spices.
"Gosh!" Link, who was seated at the left side of the table, remarked. "No matter how much water I drink, I can't get my mouth to cool off."
"You're supposed to drink milk to cool down," replied Zelda, getting up from her seat a few spaces away from the angel's and heading for the kitchen. "Water never works on that."
"What's wrong?" Min Min asked, concerned.
Pit said to her, "That ramen has to have some ghost peppers in it or something, because it's super spicy." He picked up the bowl that had the rest of the dish inside of it, grabbing a pair of chopsticks and continuing to stuff his mouth with noodles.
"If it's too pungent to handle, why are you still eating it?" Bowser asked the angel from the other side of the table, shaking his head.
"Because it's so good," he said back with his mouth still full. "Don't judge."
"I didn't add any kind of hot spices to the broth," Min Min assured with certainty. "I didn't even add the mixture of herbs I normally do just to be on the safe side."
Did she add chili powder and completely forgot that she did? Did she put cumin into the chicken broth while she was making without even thinking of it? Was there an accidental addition of turmeric into the supposedly peppery dish?
No, there couldn't have been any of that in it, she told herself. The noodles would've had a golden color to them if I put that in there. And so would the broth.
Now she was starting to second guess herself, since her track record with having her heads in the clouds wasn't exactly the best.
Min Min's eyes widened upon remembering something. She recalled talking with Rosalina while she had been busily working in the kitchen. A discussion ensued about a spell that could be done to make the dish become twice as delicious to everyone that ate it, and she agreed to have her perform it on the ramen.
Just as she was thinking about that conversation she had prior to this, she saw Rosalina walking across the hall to the room. The blonde-haired woman in the blue dress noticed what had happened, looking back at her and mouthing that she was sorry to her from where she was.
Min Min could only shake her head. This would definitely be the last time she trusted her cooking, her dishes that she made with passion, into the hands of someone practicing magic.
"You know, Pit," Rosalina said, "this was conversation was just between me and Samus."
"Oh, I'm sorry," Pit apologized before carrying on to wherever it was he was walking to next.
Samus continued on with her case. "And then there was the second mishap involving you trying out transformation..."
It had to work out properly this time around. After all, someone wise once said that a second time's a charm. Sure, the original words might have been that a third time's a charm, but she wasn't about to get technical right now.
She was more than certain that things would go according to plan this time she tried out transformation. This time around, however, she was doing things a little bit differently. Rather than trying to change herself into an animal like before, she decided to do things backwards. She managed to find a passerine bird, its feathers mostly bright yellow in hue, and thought to try the transformation spell on it.
If it worked the way it should, the bird would change into a human like her.
"Here we go..." muttered Rosalina, taking a deep breath.
A wave of her wand. A quick spin in a circle. Her mind focused on the bird she was using as her subject. She had it all down to the letter so far, and she had no intentions of failing at this.
"Transformalia!" she exclaimed.
Just as she was finishing this, history repeated itself but in a different manner. The star-like creature that was never too far from her side came fluttering by out of the blue, causing her to concentration to dissipate. The transformational energy she just conjured buzzed away from the bird, bouncing vigorously off the surfaces in the room that same it did before.
"Luma," she said to the star that was flying up to her side, disappointed. "I told you not to startle me when I was busy doing these kinds of things."
Both Rosalina and Luma tried to keep watch over the energy beam fiercely flying around, their eyes following its movements until they saw it go out of the room they were both occupying. Surely enough, as if she were living the same day for the second time, it traveled downward and somewhere on the first floor of the mansion.
Not again...
Rosalina pauses a moment before looking back over at Samus. "Okay, so I'll admit that I'm not perfect at all magic. I'm much better at spells that transfer power, and that's what I wanna try on you for the battle."
The bounty hunter replied, "But you tried that one thing on Ryu awhile back and you accidentally made his arms unable to move. Not being able to throw punches isn't exactly ideal for a martial artist."
"That was an unexpected circumstance, but I made up for that by making his legs twice as strong..."
Inside the Boxing Ring stage, Ryu couldn't move his arms any bit, and that proved to be problematic for the beginning of the battle against Villager. Luckily, though, he quickly realized that he ended up getting a different kind of strength that partially made up for the disadvantage.
He brushed himself after getting knocked across the stage. As he got back up and ready to carry on, Villager laughed and smiled back at him. The crowds, meanwhile, continued to applaud and cheer for both of them equally.
I'll make up for that, he thought. That'll be the last time he swoops down at me with that net of his.
Ryu prepared himself to make his next move against his opponent. Villager came running up towards him, the baseball bat he managed to grab on that side of the stage in his hands.
As the smiling adversary approached him, the martial artist quickly ducked before he could be swung at. The instant he got up, being as precise at fighting as he was, he spun around and struck at who he was facing with a mighty hook kick.
Villager's face had a look of shock over it the second before he was sent flying out of the ring and out of view.
With victory achieved, Ryu laughed under his breath. He was actually quite impressed with the fact that his kick was so powerful.
"He actually ended up winning that battle, and he thanked me even though I messed the spell up in the first place. I was able to figure out how to fix his arms to go back to normal later that day and the whole thing was brushed off."
"I don't feel like having the same thing happen to me," Samus responded. "It's nothing against you or your abilities. I just want to make sure that nothing goes wrong before this battle. You can understand, right?"
Rosalina sighed heavily and set her wand back down on the table. "I understand completely," she said. "If anything, I should be sorry for trying to get you to agree to me trying a spell on you that I've never successfully done."
"I haven't offended you, have I?" asked Samus out of concern, as she had a pretty good friendship with her and some of the others around the mansion.
"Not at all. I'm in desperate need of practice with some of this new stuff, and my record so far with making mistakes... is pretty bad. I'd hate to recreate that incident where I ended up swapping Inkling and Ike's voices again." She shook her head upon bringing up that occasion. "It got pretty difficult to translate what Ike was saying when he was speaking in that squid language."
"Anyway, I guess I'll just head back and get ready for the tournament the old-fashioned way: lots and lots of practicing."
"And as for my magic, I'll get back to some practicing of my own as well. This time in a secluded area with no one around and not with any of the fighters around."
Just as she made this remark to Samus, who was starting to go on her way, Rosalina started to see Roy walking into the room. On the red-haired man's back was a pair of leathery wings, like those that would have been seen on a dragon.
"Rosalina," the sword fighter said, "do you think you can try and reverse the effects of this spell from yesterday?"
"Oh, yes, of course..."
Author's Note: Let this story serve as a word of caution to everybody. Know that a happy accident is always possible if one of Rosalina's spells is being performed. XD
Hey there, readers! I haven't written anything about the Smashers in a bit, so I thought I would try to finish this idea I had partially complete for awhile now. Thought it would be interesting to write about Rosalina and the magic that she performs, so that's where this came about. I can imagine that even though she has some skills in what she has studied in the past, there's sure to be some magic that she needs to get the hang of better. Not everybody's perfect at everything, after all.
But anyway, I hope you all enjoy this little story of mine. I know this one was kind of mindless, but I still hope that it was a decent read. Then again, now that I think of it, a lot of my writing tends to be on the sillier side. XD
As always, let me know what your thoughts are on this. Your feedback, whether good or bad, is gladly appreciated.
'Til next time! :)
