Tangled Threads
Prologue
I breathed in the cold and fresh air of the morning. It instantly calmed every core of my body. Lying down on the damp grass- courtesy of the morning dew- I looked up at the canopy of the trees. A warm ray of sunlight broke through the leaves and reached me, drawing a curve along my lips.
I sighed in contentment.
"What are you doing here, May?" Sam's voice reached my ears, and I closed my eyes.
"Enjoying the forest, Sam; you are welcome to join me," I said as I heard him shift.
"You shouldn't be out here." He said, concern evident in his voice.
"Come on, Sam. It's your job to protect the people here, right? I am people." I said, sitting up. He smiled at me.
"Billy said he wants to meet you; you haven't been there in a while." He said, making the warmth I felt moments ago dissolve into a coldness.
"Yeah, it's been a while." I could barely whisper.
"Is it because of Jacob?"
"Why are you asking if you already know?" The pitiful expression on his face made me clench my teeth.
"He'll come around May; he is just taking his time." An involuntary laugh left me as he said these words. Time.
"I can handle time, but what about his heart? It's not mine." I shrugged. Sam's jaw clenched. I know he was hurting along with me. But I can't do anything to stop it.
"It's yours." The firmness behind his sentence made me hope. And hope is a dangerous thing.
"No, Sam, you don't realize, but all of this is just a mistake I am paying for." I was embarrassed by how weak I sounded.
"Imprinting is not a mistake, May. Fate chose you two to be together for a reason." It felt like this was the hundredth time he had said this to me. Ignoring his outstretched hand, I stood up, wiping the dust away from my backside, and started walking. He called out my name, and the resignation behind it made me stop to look at him.
I could only manage a weak smile for him. Because, after all, it was not his fault. It was no one's fault. Not mine, not Jacob's. Nobody. Except for our fate and our stars. I don't really believe in astrology, but I think the astrologers might be onto something.
"Sam, everyone makes mistakes in their life. This time, it's fate's turn. I just wished that it wouldn't cause so much pain. And I hope that all of us can be happy. That's the only hope that I have. Nothing more."
