Author's Note: We're back with the Korean twins. I had a time trying to find Korea's version of hell. (It's got exist somewhere, right?) In the end, I made it work. It was a struggle to look through my Facebook bookmarks because some of them are lost now. Such a pain, really. Anyway, I managed to pull it off. I will come back to them later in the season. Possibly it after Christmas. I will have to see. Speaking of Christmas, I haven't figured out what I am doing for the Hetalia part of the project. I do know that I will be back Ju next week. For now, enjoy this week's match.
Match Twenty-Three: Jiok:
Drip. Drip. Drip. Drip.
Where are we?
Im Yong slowly opened his eyes. When did it get so cold in here? He couldn't see anything around him.
"Mi Soon? Where are you?" he asked. His voice echoed around.
"Mi Soon? Mi Soon?" he asked. Im Yong doesn't know which direction to go. It's like one step will alter everything. He kept his ears trained in the darkness. The soldier froze when he heard breathing.
"Mi Soon?" he asked.
"Ow…" North Korea muttered.
"Where are you? Are you okay? Shout something at me!" Im Yong yelled. He looked around. He couldn't see anything but he could feel pulsing in the air. Tingles ran up his spine. Im Yong reached for his gun on his back.
"Im Yong?" Mi Soon asked.
"I'm right here!" her brother said.
"Where?" she asked. Im Yong took a breath.
"Keep talking," he said.
"Okay. Where are you? You're not hurt, are you?" Mi Soon asked.
"No, I'm fine. What about you?" he asked.
"I hurt my ankle and my ribs, but I'm fine. Have you heard anyone else?"
"No. Listen, try and reach out for my leg. I'll keep talking." He started to walk in different directions as they talked.
"Okay. So you haven't heard from the others?"
"No, I've just heard you."
"Oh… You don't think…?"
"I hope not. Maybe they are elsewhere. Where are you? Are you getting closer?"
"Keep talking. I think I am getting close."
"Okay, what do you want me to talk about?"
"I don't know. Anything."
"Okay. Uh… I heard Yao and Ju had a baby."
"Yeah, he's really cute."
"What's his name?"
"Jing."
"I see. I wish that I could go see him."
"You still can. It's not too late."
She laughed sadly to herself. "It's not that easy."
"It doesn't have to be like that." He reached out his hand to her.
"Here," he said. Mi-Soon stared at his face as she took his hand.
"Found you," Im Yong said. Mi-Soon looked around.
"Where are we?" she asked.
"I have no idea," her brother said. Mi-Soon fought to keep herself together. She had to try and remember her training.
"We can't stay here," Mi-Soon spoke up. She grabbed him by the hands.
"We have to get going," she said.
"And go where?" he asked. She paused. Mi-Soon grasped his hands tighter.
"What's wrong?" Im Yong asked as he could feel his sister trembling. His stomach turned as he looked into her eyes. Was that… fear?
"Mi-Soon?" Im Yong asked. "What's wrong? Say something. Talk to me." Mi-Soon quickly shook her head.
"What's wrong?" he asked again. Mi-Soon slowly opened her mouth. But then the twins froze.
"What is that?" he asked.
"Heh?" his sister asked.
"Shhh," Im Yong whispered. Both of them took a listen. Drip. Drip. Drip. Drip. There was also a soft scratching noise in the background. Im Yong reached for his gun. Mi-Soon did the same. They looked at each other for a moment. It was he who pointed forward. She nodded. Looks like they didn't have a choice.
The twins began the march forward in the darkness.
Im Yong walked smack dab into the wall.
"Ow," he muttered to himself, rubbing his nose.
"You alright?" Mi-Soon asked.
"Yeah," he said. The scratching sounds got louder. The twins looked up. They looked at each other with a finger to their lips. He put his ear to the invisible wall. The scratching sounded like a grinding noise. Something was here. But how could they get in?
Im Yong started to tap along the wall. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.
"What are you doing?" Mi-Soon asked.
"Shhh," he whispered. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. That last tap sounded an octave lower. Im Yong froze and backed up. He gave it another knock.
"There's something here," he mouthed. Mi-Soon ran up for a listen. Her brother knocked on the wall. Lower knocks echoed from the other side. More scratching followed.
There!
Im Yong took his rifle off his back and rammed it into the black invisible wall.
"Im Yong?" Mi-Soon asked.
"Help me break this down!" he shouted. She grabbed onto her rifle and started pounding on the wall. Cracks began to form on the black surface. The twins hit the walls as hard as they could.
Crack!
They jumped back in time. A dull, dusty light shined through the hall. The twins stared with their jaws to the ground and wide eyes.
"Holy shit!" Im Yong said.
Black shadowy vines covered the walls of an otherwise white room. They reached up and tangled up in each other on the ceiling and the floor. Little black balls of dust floated in the air. There wasn't much to look at in the room. A bed was pushed up against a wall on the other side of the room. The walls looked like they had been charred by a fire years ago. Round, orange lanterns covered the floor. The curtains looked a dusty red covered over the only window in the room. Mi-Soon took a step forward.
"What is this place?" she asked. Each step she took was loud enough to echo across the room.
"Careful, Mi-Soon," he whispered. His sister turned her head. He stood next to her.
"Right, right," she said. She pressed her lips together for a moment.
"We need to contact the base," she said.
"Right," Im Yong said. He pulled out his radio. The soldier frowned when he turned it on.
"Huh?" he asked. He tried to turn the radio on.
"It's not turning on," Im Yong said. Mi-Soon whipped her head around.
"You're kidding, right?" she asked. Her brother shook his head.
"Give me that," Mi-Soon said. She took his radio out of his hand.
"Hey!" Im Yong shouted. His twin tried to turn on his radio but nothing happened. Mi-Soon frowned.
"Did you check the batteries this morning?" she asked.
"Yes," Im Yong said. His sister frowned and looked over the radio. It didn't look broken. Mi-Soon looked at her own radio. Nothing, not a single sound.
"Hm…" Mi-Soon said. She took a look around the room.
"Apparently, there's something in the air that is interfering with our radios," she said. Im Yong was about to speak when he froze.
"Did you hear that?" he whispered. His sister paused and took a listen. There it was again. This time, scratching came through the walls louder. Im Yong pointed to the wall behind the bed. He ran over for a listen. Mi-Soon followed behind. They pressed their ears to the wall. The scratching grew louder. So loud that claws could come scratching through the wall. Before the twins could move, they heard a voice on the other side.
"Help… us…"
