It was New Year's Eve...
Kagome was leaning over a round black table, laughing with her friends.
He looked up, and his eyes landed right on her. His body stiffened, but no one noticed, and he hoped that when she looked up, she would not see him. He took note that she was not young anymore, that she had grown. Her legs were longer, and she was wearing skinny jeans, not a skirt. Her hair was longer and a bit more curly at the bottom. Her breasts had grown as well, and she still had her toned body from her travels in his time. Her black silk halter top showed that fact off. As he watched, it seemed like slow motion. She stopped leaning on the table and stood up, and when she brought her eyes up, they landed on him.
Her smile slowly faded, and her lips parted. She was in shock, he could tell. She had stopped breathing. One of her friends elbowed her, and she looked down; this was his chance! She looked down, shook her head, and then looked back up, but he was not in the chair anymore. Instead, he was walking right past her, clad in a pair of black slacks, a dark blue long-sleeve button-up with a tie, and black boots. She watched him pass her; she didn't turn to him or speak. He could see her hand clutching onto the table. His hair was still long. Midnight was almost here. She waited till he was gone, then spun around and ran to the door, opened it, and stepped outside. As soon as the door opened, the wind blew in her face, making her hair blow behind her.
She looked both ways. Was he gone? Then she turned her head back to the right, and he was passing her on a blacked-out motorcycle. He turned to her, but she could not see through his black helmet. He sped off into the night; she stepped close to the street and watched him once again leave her life.
"Se..sesshomaru?" She whispered into the night air her hand on her chest, her heart racing. Was she dreaming? She heard everyone inside count down, it was almost a New Year.
She walked back inside but everyone around her was in slow motion. This was not happening; she was losing her mind; he was not really here. Why? When? What about everyone else? She heard everyone yell Happy New Year, and even though she was looking down at her shoes, she saw the streamer and glitter get tossed as everyone began to celebrate. She stood there as everyone came up and kissed her on the cheek. She was there but not there.
While everyone was busy, she quickly snuck away.
He drove his bike faster than he ever had. Damn. How in this whole wide world did he end up in the same place as her? He just wanted to watch the pathic humans celebrate another new year. He never understood why they did it; it only meant they were getting closer to death. He found it amusing that they celebrated it.
Why her? Damn. He remembered.
FLASHBACK
Inuyasha came to him 45 years after the girl had vanished. Inuyasha left him with a box and told him to keep it. Normally, he would not, but he could not move it. There was some type of spell. So it sat under a tree, unmoving. Sesshomaru had no idea what was in it.
Over the years, he would pass the monk and slayer; they would bow, and he would walk past them. He never hurt them. Then, as the year went by, they died and he ran into their children and their children and so on. They knew who he was and he knew who they were. The scent of their blood was strong, he could still smell the monk and slayer with each new life.
Sesshomaru lived on. Though he didn't think much of her, he did remember her just as he remembered Rin. He also remembered that in her time, demons did not exist. He sat out to change that, and so he simply lived. He never went looking for her even though he knew where to look. He had no reason to. He didn't miss her.
You can't miss something you never had.
