Gaara got out of the bathroom wearing only a towel around his waist. His hand brushed his wet locks out of his face, flexing his muscles in the process. They weren't big, but he worked for them so he was proud. Sakura welcomed him with a clean change of clothes that she dumped into his hands before she pushed him back into the bathroom. Gaara didn't protest.
The smell of food called him to the living room where Sakura was waiting for him with everything set for the dinner.
"Have a seat."
She waited for him to sit down before she sat down across him. Gaara took the spoon in his hand and looked at it nervously as if he was contemplating something. Sakura encouraged him to try the food.
"Thank you, Sakura. It's the first time you cook for me."
Sakura's cheeks turned a deep shade of pink and she tucked her hair behind the ear as she looked down at her plate, just like she practiced in the mirror hours before Gaara came home. She failed to articulate an answer, so she took a fig into her mouth to keep herself busy. Gaara ate happily. It wasn't the best soup, but Sakura made it, which added value to it. She probably wasn't used to cooking. Back when she lived in Konoha with her parents, her mother cooked. In Suna, Noriko cooked or they went out to eat. Gaara would have preferred to eat out tonight as well because it was an important day, but he couldn't find it in himself to turn her down when he saw the food already on the table. She might have felt bad and maybe she wouldn't have cooked for him again.
Sakura didn't eat much. She wasn't hungry, but she also couldn't stare at him while he ate because it was rude. So she ate some dried fruits and seeds. She lifted her gaze from time to time and looked at him. He is so handsome.
"What did you tell the messenger today? He came back so scared." Gaara opened a conversation topic with a grin on his face.
"I didn't say anything more than I'll kill him if he tries anything." She playfully replied.
"You're scary."
"He was wandering around the house. What was I supposed to believe?"
"I didn't say anything. I am simply happy you didn't kill him. He is still of use to me." Gaara laughed as he said it.
Sakura giggled and looked at her plate again when she thought of something.
"Gaara, I have never seen you with beard."
Gaara narrowed his eyes because he smelled where this was going.
"So?"
"Why don't you wear a beard?"
"I don't know."
"Let it grow. I want to see."
"No."
"Oh, come on." She pleaded.
"Sakura..." He was annoyed.
"Fine, fine. Sorry." She didn't want to ruin his mood, so she dropped it. She just liked teasing him.
Gaara calmed down and thought of an explanation.
"I can't go to work looking like I didn't wash myself. A man must look clean otherwise people will not respect him."
Sakura didn't know what more to say, so she shut up. Gaara saved her:
"I was thinking we should go out today."
"Really? Where?"
"There is a special place where a jeweler works. He only makes unique jewelry according to the customer's wishes. We can go there and let him measure your finger for the engagement ring. Also if you want something specific, you can tell him and he will do it as you wish."
Sakura stood up and went around the table to hug him tight. Her giggles were music to his ears. He pulled her to his lap and hugged her back. His stomach rumbled, making him feel embarrassed. Sakura stood up after she untangled her arms from his neck.
"I am sorry. I will bring you the main course."
Gaara looked at her form as she went to the kitchen. She swayed her hips, her feet barely touched the floor, it looked like she stepped on clouds. He fell in love with her more every time he looked at her. She came back with multiple dishes, such as chirashizushi and tonkatsu. Her hands trembled in fear of dropping the plates.
"Gaara, I wrote a letter to my parents, asking them to meet. I wonder if I can send it with a hawk?" She fiddled her thumbs in nervousness.
Gaara slightly lifted his eyes from his food to look at her. His stare was very intense.
"My dear, I can only use the hawks for official business. Even if I send a hawk from here, it will not know where your parents live, meaning it will fly to the Hokage Tower. You know the letter will be opened because of security reasons. Are you sure you want the whole village to find out you are engaged from a letter?" He looked back at him plate and continued to eat just as calmly as before.
"You are right. I will send it through the post office."
Gaara nodded.
"Do you want to keep us a secret?"
Gaara felt the uncertainty in her voice.
"Of course not. You are very beautiful, smart and you are doing great with kids. I am lucky and proud to have you as my fiancé and future wife."
"Awww, that's so cute."
This words irked him terribly. A man can't be described with this word. He frowned, but didn't say anything. Sakura was teasing him again.
She stood up again to stand behind him. Her hands touched his stiff shoulders and massaged him as she kissed his head, his cheek, his ear. She pinched his cheeks, pulling at them as he ate. Her giggles annoyed him this time. He chewed with his eyes closed, trying to calm down. It felt as if he had 2 kids: Shinki and Sakura.
"My dear, you aren't letting me eat."
But it didn't stop Sakura. She kept pinching his cheeks and pulling at his bottom lip until he couldn't stand it anymore. He caught both her wrists in his left hand and kept them in place under his chin with his iron grip. She tried pulling back, but Gaara didn't let her.
"Let me eat. Stay still." Gaara said.
Sakura pouted before she eventually gave up and waited until he finished eating. He wiped his mouth with a napkin and sighed in relief. He took each of her wrists in his hands moving them away from his head and then back under his chin. He was playing with her hands and she liked it.
"Thank you for the food. It was very tasty."He turned his head to her and he caught her lips in a kiss.
He let go of her hands and she started clearing the table. She was walking on her toes, that's how happy she was. Right when she walked out of the kitchen after she put the dishes in the sink, Gaara appeared right in front of her, making her scream. He smirked. He held her wrist again and repositioned her body so she was with her back to the living room while he was facing it, before he let go of her. He was so close to her, she breathed his air. Her fearful eyes lifted to his face and whispered a question:
"What are you doing?"
"Who did you dress for?" He took a step towards her, making her take a step behind. She walked like a crab.
"What?" She was too shocked to answer anything else and before she recovered, a lot of questions assaulted her.
"Who are you wearing make up for?"
"Why do you smell so nice?"
"I smell perfume coming from here." He stretched his hand to touch between her legs, but she ducked, moving backwards as if her skin got burnt.
"Why?"
Sakura could no longer look at him. Her hands were clasped together on her chest and she looked at his clavicle. His right hand wrapped around her waist to pull her closer to him.
"Was it for me?" His courage knew no bounds.
His other hand rested on her bottom and he squeezed her flesh between his fingers to force an answer out of her. His mouth placed wet kisses on her neck. Her face was flushed. Her hands rested on his chest. She didn't know what to say.
"I asked you a question." He said authoritatively.
Sakura knew he was only playing with her, but even so, it was hard for her to pull herself together. She felt overwhelmed and kept repeating in her mind: Say something! Say something!
Her mouth finally opened and she admitted:
"You are right. It's all for you."
The hand on her waist moved to hold the back of her head. His thumb brushed against her cheek and he finally decided to put some distance between them. She noticed his eyes became darker and she redirected her gaze to his lips.
The couch was right behind her. He walked past her to sit down with a thump. His legs were parted, his arms stretched on top of the back of the couch, his back rested against it. Sakura was still standing before she finally had the courage to do something a few seconds later. The fire in his eyes made her feel confident. He undressed her with his eyes. Sakura unbuttoned all of the buttons of her dress, starting from bottom to top. She let the dress slide off her shoulders before it fell to the floor.
