"Boo!" said the clown. "Fear me. You are mine!" He said. He made a grab at Sarah Jane who moved out of the way. He was right in front of me. "Don't let him touch you!" cried Sarah Jane. She let lose the fire extinguisher. The clown turned to her. "Oh, sweet, sweet fear!" he said, turning to Rani, who jumped. "Luke! Asha! Give me a hand!" said Clyde. We both began banging on the door. "Why are you coming after me?" Rani asked. "And me!" I grunted as I was banging on the door. "You both have a ticket. You are mine," he said. "Get away from them!" Sarah Jane said hitting him with the fire extinguisher. "I'm not scared of you!" she said. "Raiā raiā pantsu on faia." I said under my breath. "Oh, but you are scared of me," he said, taking the thing away from her. "Sarah Jane Smith. Of all the things you have seen," we were banging on the doors now. "Of all the things out of the dark you have fought, it's me that lives in your nightmares." he said, taking to much pleasure from this. "The painted face of a clown." he finished. "Stop it, stop it." I chant under my breath. "Mum!" Luke said. Rani's phone started ringing. "Quick, we're out, come on!" yelled Clyde. "Run!" yelled Sarah Jane. "He's frozen!" Rani cried. We ran to Sarah Jane's car. "The phone's electromagnetic waves must have interfered with Spellman's energies," explained Sarah Jane as she unlocked the car. "They must have a similar frequency. But it won't last. Right?" I asked. "Isn't someone going to tell me what is going on?" asked Rani. "Rani, there is a time and a place for an interview, and being chased by a clown from outer space is not it." Sarah Jane said, obviously frightened. "Rani!" Luke called. "Just get in the car!" said Clyde. "Rani, you'll die!" I said. That got her in.
"Okay, annoying ringtones have their uses, we've learnt that today, but they're still annoying." said Clyde. Rani's phone had started ringing again. "It's mum. What do I tell her?" asked Rani. "You're on your way home. That goes for both of you." Sarah Jane said. "Yeah right. William is the only one home right now, and I am not staying in the same house as him without my mum." I said. "What, you expect me to go home, just like that?" asked Rani. "Mum, I think you should tell them everything," said Luke. "No. I told both of you." Sarah Jane snapped. "Look, if it's about aliens, then please tell me, because I have always wanted to hear someone else say that aliens exist." I said. "Please, Sarah Jane. That phone is doing my head in," said Clyde. The ringing continued until Sarah Jane snapped Rani's phone shut. "I'm going to offer you both a choice. Cross the road, go back to your families, and the life you lived before you moved here, and nothing would have changed. Or, you can come with me. If you do that, nothing will ever be the same again." said Sarah Jane. I looked at Clyde and Luke, who then grinned at each other. "I'm in." I said. "I want to know the truth." Rani said, in a final way. "Then tell your mum I'm giving you a little work experience," said Sarah Jane to Rani. "And you had better let your dad know that you'll be late." She told me. "No. My dad's dead. William is my step-Dad, and frankly, we would both be happier if I don't go home until my mum gets back from work." I said.
She lead us into the most beautiful house I have ever been in. "This way." She said, heading towards the stairs. "This place is huge!" exclaimed Rani. "You ain't seen nothing yet," said Clyde, sounding mysterious. "This is amazing!" I said to Luke as I looked at the pictures on the wall. We then came to a newer one with a Sarah Jane, Clyde Luke, and a pretty young girl of about 14. That must be Maria. "Do you miss her?" I asked Luke as he paused to look at the picture. "Yeah. She was my first friend," he said. "You're my first friend." I said. I quickly followed the others, leaving Luke alone with the picture.
"This is where it gets interesting." Clyde announced, opening the door for us. "How cool is this!" Rani said. "Awesome!" was my reaction. The attic was so cool. "This is where you work?" asked Rani. "That's right," said Sarah Jane. "What's this?" I asked. "That's a distress beacon from a Cylethian scout ship, Careful!" Sarah Jane explained, running over to my side as I picked it up. "You'll have an intergalactic rescue team on the corner of Bannerman Road." She joked. "I thought you were a journalist!" cried Rani. "I am." Sarah Jane replied. "Not with Alien gizmos in her attic, who doesn't bat an eyelid at a shape-shifting alien clown pied piper thing?" asked Rani. "That's probably more like a hobby. Right Sarah Jane?" I asked. "You're taking this well," said Luke. "Yeah, I have always believed in Aliens. Now this just confirms that I was right and everyone back in Japan was wrong." I said. "Okay, any second now, my alarm will go off and it's my second day at Park Vale. A new school with your dad as head teacher, anyone would have nutty dreams." Rani said sarcastically. "Alright Rani, this is what we do. Luke, Clyde and me. When Aliens come to Earth," please say they do often. "And they do all the time," "YEEEES!" they all looked at me. "Sorry, I have always wanted to meet a real life alien." I squeaked. "Okay, if they're friendly, and need help, we give it." Sarah Jane said. "On the other and, if they're looking for trouble, we give 'em that, too." Clyde chipped in. "Cool! Can I help?" I asked. "We'll see. And I wouldn't put it quite like that Clyde." said Sarah Jane. "Well, we have saved the world 12 times now." said Luke randomly. "No one's keeping score." said Sarah Jane. "Apart from Luke." I said. "What's important are the rules. We look after each other, we respect all life whatever planet it's from, and we tell no one what we do. Do you understand? NO one." said Sarah Jane. "Yes. I understand." said Rani. "Me too. And Sarah Jane, you need to calm down. We won't tell anyone. Promise." I chirped. "Mr. Smith, I need you," said Sarah Jane, walking over to the chimney like thing. It began to open up while playing a fanfare. Oh, and spitting out steam. It turned into a supercomputer in the wall. "What's happening?" asked Rani, amazed. "Don't worry, it's only Mr. Smith." said Clyde, walking down to join us in front of the computer. "Yes Sarah Jane. How can I help you?" It asked. "It's a computer. A talking computer." Rani began. "You've got a talking computer in your wall!" I finished. "Actually, he's a Xylok. A crystalline life form, just about the smartest in the galaxy." Sarah Jane looked at Luke. "But computer's close enough. Supercomputer." he finished to appease Rani's curiosity. "Cool." I said. "Mr. Smith, I want you to tell me everything you know about the pied piper, and a clown called Odd Bob." Sarah Jane asked. "And this has to do with the children that have gone missing?" inquired Mr. Smith. "Across America, in the period 1932 to 1940, there were disappearances of children connected to a traveling clown known as Odd Bob." Mr. Smith rattled off. "So many!" muttered a surprised Sarah Jane. "What about the Pied Piper?" I asked. "I'm sorry, I don't think we've been introduced." he said, sounding quite annoyed. "These are Rani and Asha. They're just visiting." I looked down and smiled a disappointed smile. "What about the Piped Piper?" asked Sarah Jane. "A legendary figure, who, in 1284 rid the German town of Hamlin of rats with a magical tune. When the town refused to pay his fee, he enchanted away all its children." Sarah Jane looked understanding. "But could there be any truth in the story?" I asked, curious. "It's a matter of historical fact that Hamlin lost its children." "Whoa! You mean it's true?" asked Rani. "I want you to scan this, Mr. Smith," said Sarah Jane, ignoring Rani. A small tray popped out of the console, on which Sarah Jane put the ticket. "I'm detecting traces of an alien energy," he stated. "Yes!" Sarah Jane whispered. "What sort of energy?" asked Luke. "I can find no comparable data for analysis," he said. "So this is something from way off." Clyde explained. "Mr. Smith, show me the historical extra-terrestrial records for lower Saxony in the 13th century." asked Sarah Jane. A map of Lower Saxony popped up on the screen. "What's that?" asked Luke. "In the Weserbergland Mountains?" I finished. I had noticed it too. "A meteorite fragment, which landed in 1283." Mr. Smith informed us. "The year before the Piper arrived. The Piper was in the meteor! Result!" cried Rani. "The meteorite had a diameter of 30.12 centimeters. An unlikely spacecraft, Rani." Mr. Smith said. "Not impossible." I muttered to her. "Still, what do we know about it?" asked Sarah Jane. "The meteorite is currently on loan for scientific research from the university of Munich to the UK." He informed us. "You mean it's here?" asked Clyde, getting exited. "And he came with it." Luke reminded him. "Perhaps if I were able to analyze a fragment, I could provide information on the energy sample." Mr. Smith suggested. "Of course. Where is it?" asked Sarah Jane. "The Pharos Institute." was the prompt reply from the computer. Sarah Jane, Luke and Clyde all shared a look. Sarah Jane walked us home, giving us each a shield thing that would protect us from the clown. I slept well that night. When I woke up the next morning, I turned the shield off and looked outside. The clown had been. Uh oh.
"I can't believe we're still at school with that alien still out there." Rani said. "Welcome to our world. We're the fearless alien hunters, defenders of the Earth, but everything stops for the school bell. Tell me about it." Clyde said, grinning. "Was Maria one of you then?" Rani asked. "A fearless alien hunter?" She continued. "Yes" Luke said. People were grabbing red balloons that appeared out of nowhere. "So that's what you meant when you said we couldn't be friends in the same way?" I realized. Then I stopped, grabbing Luke's arm, which stopped him too. "He's here. The balloons. It's Odd Bob. He's here." Rani said. "No. No please." I said. I was scared. "What's going on?" asked Clyde. The balloons slowly hypnotized people. "It's as if the balloons are taking control of them," gasped Luke. They slowly began marching out of the school. "Okay, this does not feel good," said Clyde. "No really? I thought that this is all sunshine and rainbows (!)" I said nervously. "He's leading them away, like the Pied Piper." Rani said. "Come on." I said, running ahead.
I whipped out my phone and phoned Sarah Jane. I shoved it to Luke. "Mum, I think you had better get down here." said Luke grimly. "Turn around! You don't know what you're doing!" Clyde called out to everyone. "You're in danger, all of you. Don't you understand?" Rani yelled. "Come on, stop, come back! Where are you going?" Clyde asked. I took the phone back. "I think they're heading for the circus museum." I said. We were instructed not to follow them inside.
We met up with Sarah Jane outside the museum. "We tried to get them to turn back. But they won't listen." said Rani. " It's like they're zombies." said Clyde. "Interesting analogy Clyde, but really unhelpful!" I said, getting worried. "I think Spellman's controlling them, much like he did the clown mannequins." Sarah Jane explained. "What's he going to do with them? It's practically the whole school!" cried Luke. "They'll just vanish like the others, without a trace. It isn't the children he's interested in, it's the fear their disappearance causes." Sarah Jane explained further, "Spellman is an energy entity that feeds on fear." They kept marching. Mr. Spellman walked out of the museum. "Roll up! Roll up! Welcome to Spellman's Magical Museum of the Circus." He called, "Just step this way!" "I don't think so, Mr. Spellman." Sarah Jane said. I wished I could be that brave. "I don't think you have any say in the matter, Miss Smith." Mr. Spellman said coolly. "Perhaps I should phone a friend." Sarah Jane replied promptly said, whipping out her phone. Everyone's phone began ringing. One by one, they all released the balloons. They were free! "Oh! It looks like his line's busy." Sarah Jane said, obviously trying to annoy him. "It must be Mr. Smith." Luke said. "He's scanned the school records and rung every pupil." I expanded on his theory. "The phone signals are interfering with Spellman's power." Clyde realized. I grin and hug Luke, as he was closest, when everyone began going back to school. I'm a bit of a huger. "You meddle with me at your cost, Sarah Jane Smith!" Mr. Spellman said to a smiling Sarah Jane. "I'm not scared of you, or Odd Bob!" announced Sarah Jane. She overcame her fear. Good on her. "You think you have conquered your fear? I will show you fear!" He threatened. "Sounds like a bad loser to me." said Clyde. "Everyone's going back to school!" exclaimed Rani. Suddenly, Luke disappeared. "Where did Luke go?" I asked. "Luke?" Sarah Jane yelled. "He was right next to me." Clyde said. "Where's he gone?" Rani asked. "Search me. I was giving him a celebratory hug, when, poof. No more Luke." I said. "No! I'm not having this!" said an enraged Clyde, marching up to the doors of the museum. "No, Clyde. You stay here. You, too, Rani. And definitely you as well Asha." I groaned. "Luke is my son. I'm going after him on my own." Sarah Jane said with an air of finality. "No way. We're coming to help you." Rani said. "I'm not going to risk losing all three of you as well." She said. "Now stay here," she ordered. She walked in. Then, as though knowing us, she turned around and soniced the door. "Really? She doesn't trust us?" I asked Clyde. "Well, she doesn't trust me, at least." he said. "That was rhetorical." I snapped. "So what do we do? She might need us." Rani exclaimed. "We've got to find another way in. Come on." Clyde said, grabbing our arms and dragging us away. "Fire escape?" I suggested.
We found a window. "Give us a hand!" Rani said as the two of us tried to open the window. "Look, maybe you stay here. It's going to be dangerous in there." Clyde said. "Would Maria have stayed out here?" Rani asked. "No" was the response. Rani made a 'very well then' face at him. "Come on then." I exclaimed, still trying to open the window. "Got it." I said as I opened the window. We all slid inside.
"But you cannot destroy miss, Miss Smith. No one can destroy fear." Mr. Spellman was saying to Sarah Jane as we entered the room. We were hiding behind a colorful cart. "'Tis part of you all. I am part of you all." he finished. Is he still talking? "How do you fight fear? What can we do?" Clyde asked. I realized something. "I'll tell you what you can do." Rani said. "If you are so concerned about your son, then I'll take you to join him. I'm sure your disappearance, in time, will give me much nourishment." He said. "Alright Mr. Spellman, listen to this." Clyde said, coming out. "Two ariels got married. You should have seen the reception." Clyde's joke was so stupid it was funny. "Clyde!" Sarah Jane called. "Another child, another frightened mother. You have a ticket, Clyde Langer." Mr. Spellman said, coming at Clyde. "Keep away from him!" yelled Sarah Jane. "What do you call a sheep with no legs? A cloud!" Clyde's jokes are getting worse. "Police station toilet stolen! The cops have nothing to go on!" Okay, that one was good. "What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh" "Clyde? Really?" I asked. "A magician was driving down the road and he turns… into his house!" "What is this?" Mr. Spellman demanded. "Come on folks, how about a bit of audience participation?" Clyde threw his arm around Sarah Jane. "What's invisible and smells like carrots?" he imitated a fart. "A rabbit fart!" Okay, I'm not going to comment. Rani and I came out, clapping. "Where would you find a one legged dog? Where you left him," said Rani. "Do you want to hear a joke about paper? Never mind. It's tear-able!" I said. "What's this? They're nicking my material." Clyde said indignantly. "What do you call a fake noodle? An impasta!" I cried. "Stop this now!" Mr. Spellman ordered. "What's wrong Mr. Spellman? Does the sound of Laughter upset you? Does it frighten you?" Sarah Jane asked. "You will fear me!" He demanded. "He's getting weaker!" I cried. "Two fish are in a tank, one says to the other, 'do you know how to drive this?'. An optician tells a guy he's colour blind. 'Well, that's a bolt out of the green!'. How did Count Dracula escape from Transylvania? He used a blood vessel!" the laughter is getting louder. "What's wrong Mr. Spellman? Not game for a laugh?" asked Sarah Jane. Boy is she brave. "People have shuddered with fear in my shadow for over 700 years." Mr. Spellman said. "And now, they're rocking with laughter. I bet that's a real kick in the ego!" I said in between laughs. Sarah Jane's pocket began to vibrate. "Sarah Jane! Your pocket!" Rani pointed out. "I went to the dentist and he said, 'Say "ah"' I said, 'Why?' He said, 'My dog's dead.'" Sarah Jane had removed the rock fragment from her pocket. "Of course. That's it!" she mumbled. "You think you can destroy me with these pathetic jokes?" Mr. Spellman asked. "Hey, this is classic material." said Clyde, sounding offended. "I'm not going to destroy you, Mr. Spellman. I'm going to put you back where you belong, where you don't need anyone's fear to survive." Sarah Jane said triumphantly. "No!" he shouted. "This is where you belong. That meteor brought you to Earth. You have always been attached to it, but you were strong enough to resist its pull. Not any more. The nightmare is over." Sarah Jane said. Mr. Spellman burst into a ball of light and went into the meteor fragment. "Thank you! The joker in the pack." said Clyde, in his best presenter voice. He took a bow. "And his assistant!" I yelled, also taking a bow. There was a round of applause for us. "Every alien busting team should have one." said Clyde. "That was good thinking, Clyde." said Sarah Jane. Clyde laughed. "Well, it was Rani and Asha's idea." he said. "Yeah, but we told him to be funny." Rani said with a fake sneer.
A "Mum!" came from behind us. "Luke! Luke, you're alright!" cried Sarah Jane. "LUKE!" I screamed, giving him a bear hug. Sarah Jane laughed, then joined in. "What happened? Where's Spellman?" asked Luke. "I imagine you could say he's finally paid the piper." Sarah Jane announced, holding out the rock. Luke was so confused. Rani and I chuckled.
We were back at Sarah Jane and Luke's house. We were in the attic. "The children who have been taken in recent weeks have all been found safe and well. They have no memory of what happened to them, but were clearly released when the energy entity was returned to the meteor fragment." Mr. Smith informed us. "And that is going in here." said Sarah Jane, placing it in a box and closing it. "Halkonite steel." she explained as it buzzed shut. "Nothing can get through it. Not even thoughts." She continued.
Rani and I were going home. "So what happens now? Do you trust me to keep all this secret?" Rani asked. "And me?" I asked. "When it comes to getting a true glimpse of the universe, there are two types of people. Those who refuse to believe, that will tell themselves anything to deny the evidence of their eyes, and those who embrace the universe, and just how special life is, and want it to stay that way by keeping it safe and secret." Sarah Jane explained. "And that's me?" Rani asked. "That's all of us." I said. "Tomodachi?" I asked. "Yeah." responded Luke, in English. I taught them all the word for friend in the car.
Just then, Mr. and Mrs. Chandra came up the driveway. "Rani, where do you think you've been?" Mr. Chandra demanded of his daughter, "I thought you would have had more sense than to get involved in this walkout." "Walkout?" asked Sarah Jane, feigning innocent. "Stupid prank. The whole school went walk about, then wanders back a couple of hours later, claiming not to have known what they'd been doing. Obviously, some bright spark thought that it'd be a good way to wind up the new head teacher." Okay, he's angry. "Oh, don't worry Mr. Chandra. The four of us had a free period, so we went to the library. They wanted to learn some Japanese." I lied. "See, that's why she wasn't answering her phone." Gita said. "Oh, I was at the library myself and brought them home." said Sarah Jane. "You see sir, I was taking your advice. Try applying my brains to something other than being funny." Clyde said. "He's actually really good at picking up languages." I said. "Oh, by the way, I saw it on the news. "All those kids turned up, like nothing ever happened, very happy-ever-after, but I can't help thinking, weird." Gita said. "Not weird, mum. Surprising. The universe is a surprising place." said Rani. "Anyway, Haresh is making veggie chili for tea. You're all welcome to share." Gita invited us. Haresh made a face and walked off. "Oh, I'd love to, but I need to get on with some work. But Luke…" she said, pushing him forward. "Yeah, Please." he said. "Come on." Gita said. "Can I come? Mum's still not back, and William would just tell me to make something myself." I asked. "Yes of course, my darling." Gita said. She linked arms with Luke and I. "Haresh is always cooking too much food. He has this thing about Dawn French." Gita told us. "His mother always said I was far too skinny." I giggled. "Mothers in Japan would say the same about me too." I said. I faintly heard Clyde exclaim, "Look at me with my new head teacher cooking me tea!" That was all I heard before I was swept up into the Chandra's loud house.
