Chapter 23: The Hunt (and Love) BEGINS!
"Alright Perseus. We have delayed this conversation with our father for far too long now. Not to mention, we have also never finalized on what we want the hunt to be. Which is why, I have prepared a rule book for the two of us to go over with. Try and maybe create the best elite hunting group in all of Greece!" Artemis said proudly, dumping a bunch of papers on a sleeping Perseus.
"Oof! You want me to puke on you or what? I'm trying to concentrate over here." Perseus said, a smile on his face. "Mhmm, now that smells delicious..."
"Are you literally drooling? Don't tell me you drool in your sleep. What are you doing?" Artemis asked, looking confused.
"I'm taking in the scent of all my offerings. Ohhhh, that's one really ripe bunch of black currants. Oh, that smells heavenly." Perseus, letting out a happy sigh.
Artemis raised an eyebrow on hearing that. "You chose black currants as a sacrifice? I'm sure you would have loved to see some 'slithering devils' sacrificed in your name."
Perseus lightly shrugged. "I wouldn't mind. Though I do not want to be bombarded with snake smell every day. But black currants, mhhhmm. I think I'm going to have pancakes for the fifth time in the row this week.
Artemis sighed, but then grinned evilly. "How are the mortals' prayers for you?" Artemis asked, knowing immediately she hit a jackpot on seeing Perseus frown.
"Horrible. They are literally asking me to protect them for like...forever. I've already got four kings praying to me for divine protection. And they all have patron gods to boot! I'm half expecting Ares to come crashing here, demanding why I got a bunch of boars, dogs and a guy whipped bloody for me today from Sparta today." Perseus said with a shudder. "Why would I want dogs sacrificed to me anyways. Because it's my sacred animal now?!"
Artemis looked a bit sick. "Why did I ask, and why am I not surprised that it's Sparta."
"They are literal freaks. Doesn't help that their patron adores them." Perseus said. A few moments later, he began to groan. "Great, I just got a prayer from Acrisius of all people. He wants me to sink some enemy ships passing by. What am I, a god for hire? I'm almost tempted to smite him there and then only; it will send a message as well to everyone."
Artemis frowned. "I'll be totally fine with that, if it's true that he sent his very own men to help Mados. And if Hera gets pissy, I'll be there to have your back."
Perseus smiled. "You always have my back Artemis, just like I have yours. I don't need to worry on you not being there. Or back stabbing me but whatever." he said getting up. "Come on let's finalize the hunt."
"Nice. Okay, I was thinking of having children in the hunt. I don't think I can deal with grownups who have their own philosophies and what not. And also, because children come under my domain." Artemis replied.
Perseus nodded. "I'm fine with that. What ages are you looking for?"
"I was thinking around twelve or eleven. And the oldest probably sixteen or seventeen."
"Those are good numbers." Perseus said. "So, they will have like a... five-year tenure with the hunt? And then what, they go their separate ways?"
"That was what I thought as well. But then I thought, it doesn't have to be necessary that the hunt should be temporary." Artemis said, a fond look on her face. "What if... the hunt can be a home for them?"
Perseus was confused. "They'll anyways grow up at the end, and you already said you don't want to deal with adults." he pointed out. "So how exactly you want to make this a hunt a home for them?"
Artemis sighed. "Well...this is where the crazy part comes in."
Perseus raised an eyebrow. "I'm listening." he said slowly.
"Okay, bear with me now. What if...our hunters...remain the same age, which will not warrant them to leave the hunt anytime soon."
Perseus blinked a couple of times, and then his eyes widened. "You want to make them immortal?!" he cried.
"Not full-on immortal, just partially immortal." Artemis said. "They can never age or get sick, but they can fall during battle or by physical wounds. I know the idea is a bit farfetched, but, after seeing the plight of all those children in Kichyros, and definitely elsewhere as well, I just wanted to give something to them, maybe a safe haven for those unfortunate. Of course, it probably won't be that safe if a monster attacks or vice versa, but at least give them like a sense of purpose in their lives."
"That's definitely not a bad idea, no scratch that, I think it's really good." Perseus said with a grin. "Partial immortality...let's see if your father agrees with that."
"Well, I am his favorite so we might have his in our favor." Artemis replied.
"Or we can ask our friend, the merciful lord down below." Perseus quipped, receiving a laugh from Artemis.
"I'm having nightmares now of Hecate, Apollo and Hermes doing a skit together on father for next year's show. Wonder who will get smitted first."
"Okay, now we have to decide on who is eligible to join the hunt. We already established the ages, now it's time for who."
"I was actually thinking of bringing in only girls in the hunt." Artemis said bashfully. "But then I thought, if anyone can not turn a boy into some of the pigs out there, then it's definitely you. And I will of course handle the girls."
Perseus scoffed. "So I'm guessing I'm responsible for making the boys gentlemen, and you will make the girls butt-shooting, castrating she-devils? Gotcha."
Artemis swatted his arm. "They will only turn into she-devils if you or anyone else will mess with them. Otherwise, they will very well behaved."
"With you around, I doubt it. So, who are we going to bring into the hunt? Are we going to get mortals?" Perseus asked.
"Of course mortals Perseus, which god would want partial immortality. But demigods are welcome as well, even nature spirits on that matter."
Perseus frowned. "Nature spirits? Are you telling me you're fine with bringing those satyrs into your hunt as well?"
Artemis immediately paled on hearing this. "Di immortals no!" Satyrs, are banned, outright banned. No way I want those beings around, especially with how they act around me!"
"They might see it as... 'you hate our species kind of thing'." Perseus said, but then shrugged. But then again, they will probably be too blind and clouded to notice."
"They better." Artemis muttered, and then immediately groaned out loud. "Great job ash-for-brains, now Apollo's cursed words are echoing in my head once again!"
"What do you mean by cursed words?" Perseus asked.
Artemis glared at him, but then slowly began to smile. "Since you're so curious..." she said, quickly holding Perseus's hands down. Perseus stared at Artemis confused, only to get a smirk in return. "So, you know how satyrs don't wear anything down below right? Or anything for that matter."
"Yeah..." Perseus said, trailing off.
"And you know how they are all head over heels lusting after me?" Artemis continued."
"Don't forget drooling messes. Oh, and they fall on their two feet when they see you. Or is it hooves?" Perseus asked.
"Forget about. So now think. If satyrs don't wear anything down below, and they all are lusting over me, then what does that imply?"
Perseus just stared at Artemis, wondering what she was getting on. That is, until Perseus thought over what Artemis said. He immediately paled, then turned green, and threw up a little inside his mouth.
"You understood, or no? Or should I say it out-"
"LALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" Perseus shouted as he struggled against Artemis's grip. Artemis laughed loudly as she held him down. "You made me remembered it, so it's only fair you have to suffer alongside with me. I mean, we do have each other's backs so it makes sense."
"I didn't sign up for having your back on Apollo's deranged thoughts! I have half a mind to shoot him down, and then you later as well!"
"Relax, you'll probably forget it." Artemis said, ruffling Perseus's hair.
"Oh come on, I see satyrs every day! I'm not going to forget something like this!" Perseus cried, still struggling out of Artemis's grip. As a last ditch effort, he leaned back, only to fall from the sofa along with Artemis. The two tumbled down on the floor, with Artemis on top of Perseus as her hair forming a makeshift curtain around him. The two then began to laugh at the situation they got themselves in, only to completely realize the situation. Both of them were holding on to each other's shoulders as their eyes gazed at each other, the two of them completely lost at the moment. Perseus gulped a bit as he unconsciously shifted while Artemis's eyes kept glancing at Perseus's eyes, and then his lips. Both seemed to let their instincts take over as they leaned forward, their lips parting and-
"Artemis honey, I can really use some help with tonight's stew and- oh." Leto said, a blank look on her face as she stared at the two gods lying on the floor. Artemis whipped her head up so fast she probably would have gotten whiplash if she was not a goddess, while Perseus gently pulled Artemis's hair away to look behind at the person.
"I'll just... come back later." Leto mumbled, dashing out of the room. Both Artemis and Perseus were too stunned to say anything as they remained on the floor. A loud screech from a bird was heard outside, which broke the two out of their stupor as they quickly scrambled up, both of them blushing from head to toe.
"Uh...let's go to Olympus. Got to get the hunt up and running." Artemis said, nervously chuckling.
"Yep, we have to do it rather later than sooner. I mean, sooner than later rather. No, I- you get my drift." Perseus said, wincing internally.
"Right, let's go." Artemis said, reaching out for Perseus's hand. Only to pull it back quickly as she pulled her head back. "See you in a minute." she said, flashing away.
"I don't take a minute." Perseus mumbled, flashing away as well.
The two gods then materialized just outside of the throne room. On going inside, they were greeted by Zeus and Athena, who seemed to be arguing with each other.
"Daughter, be reasonable. You know how some gods are-"
"But unlike them, he doesn't get a hint! I don't want to work with him anymore if it means I have to be tailed behind by a blubbering and sputtering handicapped mess of a god!" Athena cried.
Zeus sighed. "I'll talk to Hephaestus if you want. And if he starts being respectful towards you in the future, I want you to be respectful to him as well."
"What?!"
"Or just...remain neutral. But there has to be no bad ichor between you two. I want to see progress in our defense systems which is why I have paired the two of you together. If you're done with your tirade, then you can leave Athena." Zeus said, his tone screaming finality. Athena mumbled a 'Yes father' and trudged out of the throne room, giving only a short nod to Perseus and Artemis.
"Looks like Hephaestus is in Athena's bad books. As well as her diary." Perseus whispered to Artemis.
"The same legendary diary that you and Apollo have tried countless times to steal?" Artemis whispered back.
"Ye...p." Perseus said, popping his 'p'. The two then approached Zeus who had a thoughtful look on his face which he quickly masked as he saw the two approaching."
"My daughter and nephew. To what do I owe this talk." Zeus asked, straightening up on his chair.
"Milord, and father. This is about the proposition of our hunt we had told you a while ago. We have finally laid the groundwork for it. All we need now is your permission to undertake this, that is, if you agree with what the hunt and its role to Olympus as a whole will entail." Artemis said in a formal tone. Zeus realized that she was talking to him as one would to a king, and nodded. "List everything out."
"We wish to have the hunt open to children from ages ranging from eleven to seventeen. We will teach them everything there is to know about not just hunting, but fighting as well. Tracking animals, setting up traps, living out in the wild will all be part of the experience. And once these hunters get more experienced, they will take on harder targets such as monsters. All our welcome from mortals, demigods and nature spirits, we will not discriminate them by their parentage whatsoever. Their own actions and choices will determine their character. But no satyrs because of obvious reasons."
Zeus hummed in acknowledgement as he stroked his beard. "I'm not sure about the parentage aspect. What if you get someone who's from the Titan family, the bad side that is. Like say, one of the Hesperides? But all of your other points are acceptable."
"Like Artemis said, it will be their actions and choices that will determine who they are." Perseus said, sighing. "We can go all around in circles on that argument Lord Zeus. I hope you can at least trust us in making good judgement on who we can pick and trust. Worst case scenario, we... okay I'm not sure what we will do but we will think of something."
Zeus then let out a heavy sigh. "I will leave that up to you both then. Is there anything to add?" he asked.
"There is. We wish to make our hunters partially immortal as well." Artemis said, gouging for Zeus's reaction. He did look very surprised as he opened his mouth, only to close it as he had a light frown on his face. "Can you explain why you want that?" he asked slowly.
Artemis had a knowing look on her face as she discreetly nodded at Perseus. "After Perseus told me of the plight he has seen many homeless children and those with homes as well go through, it got me thinking if me and Perseus could provide them a home here as well. A better one. And while some may have the need to leave this home we will give them, others won't which leads to the age problem as we can't obviously keep them in the hunt as adults. And that is where the partial immortality comes in."
Zeus had a blank look on his face. "Continue." he said.
"We want to make this hunting group an elite force which Olympus can rely on at the time of need. We will at some point of time take down the monsters that plague these lands and partial immortality can form a sense of security, as well as an added advantage of the increased strength and fitness one will have so that they can hopefully keep up with us."
"And it also eliminates the growing up into adults' part." Perseus said, chiming in. "They can stay forever the same age, or whatever age they wish to remain immortal as. And like Artemis previously said, they are free to leave if they wish to pursue other adventures of their own out there. And they won't retain the partial immortality if that's what you're worried about, we'll remove that from them if they wish to leave."
Zeus's face was hard to read as he stared at the two gods in front of him. He took a deep breath as he closed his eyes and then exhaled as he rested back on his throne.
"The partial immortality worries me for a bit, I would say that it is unnecessary but you plan to make your hunt a permanent home for these people so they have to remain in some way. How many members are you planning to have in this hunt?" Zeus asked.
Artemis blinked as he glanced at Perseus, not knowing what number to give. "Uh...at most thirty. I don't think we can handle more than that." Artemis replied.
Zeus sighed and then nodded. "Thirty seems reasonable. Alright, I will allow this hunt to be made. I hope it upholds to what you two want it to be, and if it does, I will be very happy with the results. Perseus and Artemis, please step forward." Zeus said as he got up. Perseus and Artemis glanced at each other, both of them shrugging as they stepped forward. "I give you my blessings to make beings out there partially immortal. You already had the immortality giving gift within you but I improved on it. But definitely not worsened it if you think I made the immortality giving a partial immortality giving thing." Zeus rambled.
"Wait a minute, you're saying we both already have immortality giving powers?" Perseus asked with surprise.
"That is correct Perseus,,, in a way. All major gods have the power to make someone immortal, while some don't actually. It also depends on who you can make immortal as it will require spells and magic to undertake that."
"Like burning a baby in a fireplace." Artemis said, staring at Demeter's throne.
Zeus smiled as he followed his daughter's gaze. "Exactly. But good luck in establishing your hunt. I hope to see the two of you'll prosper within it. And I hope you don't slack in your many duties as a god while doing so." Zeus warned. He then disappeared in the form of a lightning bolt, leaving behind the smell of ozone.
"That actually went better than expected." Artemis said with a grin.
"See, being 'Daddy's little girl' has it's perks." Perseus said, dodging an upcoming punch on the arm. "But now that I think about it...what are we going to do if we get people who might double cross us? I doubt kicking them off the hunt will be enough."
"We can...kill them?" Artemis asked with a shrug.
"Hmm, we'll cross that bridge later. I'm thinking something along the lines of 'scaring the shit out of them'. Perseus said with a grin. "I'm good with those."
"You definitely are. But I was thinking of adding an oath as well, you know to make it seem more official." Artemis said, watching curiously as Perseus groaned.
"You're adding more and more ideas to this, I have nothing! Not to mention, an oath sounds boring." Perseus joked, massaging his shoulder where Artemis managed to punch him. "Oh shush, you basically came up with the entire premise, I'm just adding minor stuff into this." Artemis replied.
"Minor?!" Perseus asked incredulously. "What's the oath going to even be?"
"Let me think." Artemis muttered as the two walked up a hill. "I was thinking along the lines of...'I pledge myself to the goddess Artemis'. Or, to the god Perseus. Any one works. Then maybe, 'I turn my back on civilization'. Because we will be living in the wilderness. And finally, 'Accept the blessings to join the hunt' and 'Be loyal to Olympus'. What do you think?"
"I think it sounds perfect, though we can always just blast them with the blessings and what not." Perseus said, stopping next to palace that was under construction. It didn't look anything special, just a brick building with wooden infrastructure everywhere.
"I must say, your palace looks quite spectacular. Even though you are using quite mundane stuff to construct it." Artemis noted, her eyes widening. "Is that an archery range at the back?"
"An obstacle course, a small patch for sword fights and a lot more. It's going to look epic." Perseus said with a grin. "Your palace is also quite nice. It's very...silver?"
"I'm guessing you're not impressed." Artemis mumbled.
"I am impressed. I mean, a full palace made out of silver? That's something alright. Does it glow at night?" Perseus asked.
"Yep, and don't worry. The glare won't be harmful, unlike my brothers who probably plans to make half of Olympus half-blind."
"He gave me a cloth to wear around in case I pass by his palace." Perseus said with a chuckle. "I can't wait to move in my place soon, it'll be nice to have some privacy."
"Yeah, I wouldn't have my mother or Apollo barge in on me every single day." Artemis said, a light blush forming on her face. "Anyway, why don't we start recruiting now? I'm itching to get this thing started."
"Looks like I can't convince you otherwise. But wait...who are we going to recruit? And how? Like are we going to go city by city, or wait for an oracle to announce this, or-"
"Come on arrowhead, we are going to Kichyros. Is that enough to answer your question?" Artemis asked with a smirk as she quickly flashed away.
Perseus just stared dumbfounded at the spot where Artemis was. "Why Kichyros?" Perseus wondered. "Who is in Kichyros that correlates with...oh. That's smart, that's actually quite smart." Perseus thought as he to flashed away.
The city of Kichyros was handling the repercussions of the events that happened a few days ago quite well. Damages were easily fixed due to an anonymous donation of drachmas which the citizens chalked it up to Perseus's doing. Hades's temple was fixed to look brand new while the remaining money was used to build a small temple for Perseus, with the guidelines stated before by him. The safe house which held the rescued kids was still being used by said kid, with added amount of help from the locals. But they were unsure as to how long it will last.
Phoebe and Celyn were going through some clothes when Perseus emerged right in front of them through a shadow, scaring them off their feet.
"Perseus! A decent man would come by the front door at least!" Celyn shouted, but them immediately paled when she realized who she was shouting at. "I'm so sorry, forgive me lord-"
"Oh no you don't, don't try to apologize. You're right, I should have come from the front door at least and I don't want to hear you or anyone else call me lord and all that stuff. My mind is anyways plagued with 'Milord this, milord that.' I don't want to hear it in person." Perseus said with a chuckle. "What are you two doing anyways?"
"Sorting out clothes some people have given to us to keep." Phoebe answered. "We're planning to do some odd jobs as well to get some money. But what are yu doing here?"
"Well, me and Artemis have a proposition to go over with you guys. Speaking of Artemis, where-"
"Here I am." Artemis said, barging into the house. "Sorry, I got distracted by some cypress trees, they look beautiful around here."
"What's this proposition about?" Phoebe asked.
"Well, first thing I want to know is. What will happen to the little ones if, let's say, you older kids go out on a random holiday out?" Perseus asked.
The two girls stared at Perseus a bit weirdly. "Most of them have thankfully gotten adopted by a bunch of people out there. Though there are some that chose to stay because they are not that good with people. Some of us older kids have decided to take care of them. ...Why do you ask?" Celyn replied.
"Phoebe, do you remember how I mentioned that day that there might be a solution for some of the children out here?" Artemis said, gaining a short nod in reply. "Well, me and Perseus have decided to form a hunting group together, for older girls and boys. If you think anyone will be interested in something like this, then can you please call them out?"
Phoebe and Celyn glanced at each other with hopeful looks on their faces. They nodded at Artemis and scrambled around the house, talking to the other kids around. Soon enough, about ten kids were gathered around, looking at the gods with a bit of fear and apprehension.
"Okay, if you guys didn't know already, I'm Perseus and this is Artemis. The two of us are Olympian gods as well. Now, we have a proposition for all of you which you should consider very carefully. Because it will change your future, for hopefully better than worst. So, with that out of the way, me and Artemis have decided to create a hunting group for kids from like eleven to seventeen. For both boys and girls. We will teach you all how to use a bow, hunt animals, and maybe try out and learn using different weapons. And as you all progress, we will up the ante by including hunting down monsters. If you guys get really good over the years, then me and Artemis will consider taking you all out to hunt dangerous beasts around Greece, and also in my missions to protect innocent people out there. Like I did for you guys three days ago."
"I think you broke them." Artemis whispered to Perseus as the two watched the gob smacked expressions the children were adopting. "Wait, can the younger ones come along as well?" a boy asked, glancing behind where two little kids were laying with some toys.
"I'm afraid not. What we will be doing is not suitable for children at that age." Artemis replied apologetically.
"Unless they grow old enough to be able to join." Perseus said offhandedly. "And you guys will anyways not age so it's not like anyone will really miss out in a sense."
All of them were again staring at Perseus with dumbfounded looks on their faces. "What?!" a boy, which Perseus recognized as Arius from that day, said out loud. "What do you mean we won't age?!"
"Oh... I think I forgot to mention that." Perseus mumbled. "Yeah, so because some of these tasks are actually quite grueling for an average human being, and definitely something an average teen may not be able to handle, we have decided to gift you'll partial immortality if you choose to join the hunt. You all will never age or get sick, but you will die if you fall in battle or from severe physical wounds. But I do hope partial immortality will not be the only reason for you to join." Perseus warned.
"We can build a family out of this, where we all will look out for each other. There will be hardships, but we can overcome them." Artemis stated.
Every single one of the kids were shocked on hearing this, many were contemplating joining as well. "This... this all sounds too good to be true." Arius said. "Is there a catch? There has to be a catch to this." he asked.
Perseus and Artemis glanced at each other, the former raising an eyebrow. Artemis sighed, and then addressed Arius. "There is a catch. ...You double cross us and the hunt, and we'll make sure to enact severe punishments which I hope won't be the case. Though we still are contemplating on what we will exactly do..." she mumbled.
"For all we know, it can even be death due to the severity of it. We're still not sure. But we are unpredictable so it might be anything." Perseus replied.
"You all can leave the hunt if you wish to do so, if you want to pursue your own adventures and all that stuff. You won't keep the immortality though. So yeah, that's all there is to it." Perseus added.
Artemis's eyes suddenly began to glow as a shocked expression came across her face. "How did I forget about something like this. And one more thing, all members-"
"Timeout! One second everyone." Perseus said hastily as he scooped up Artemis in his arms and ran out of the safe house.
"Now what are you adding?!" Perseus asked, staring incredulously at a semi mad Artemis.
"You didn't have to carry me out." Artemis mumbled. "But I was thinking of making our hunters take a virginity oath as well."
Perseus just stared at Artemis as he slowly blinked a couple of times. "I'm sorry...a what now?"
Artemis rolled her eyes. "A virginity oath. Meaning you have to remain as a virgin if you want to join or stay in the hunt. I as the patron to not just maidens but young children both boys and girls out there will want my followers to be what I represent, isn't that correct?" she asked.
"That is true..." Perseus said, and then frowned. "Are you a virgin goddess?" he asked.
"Am I?" Artemis said in a deadpanned voice.
"No...that would be my mom and Athena." Perseus replied. "But yeah, I can see where you're going with it."
"And I'm glad you are. Plus, I don't want to deal with any potential accidents whatsoever."
"Yes milady." Perseus said with a grin as the two entered the house once again and addressed their audience.
"Before I was so rudely interrupted, I was going to say that there is one requirement from everyone who wishes to join, or stay in the hunt. And that is, you'll have to remain virgins. No exceptions, I'm not sure if you already know this, but I am the patron of all young maidens, and in a sense, children as well. Which is what you all and my future followers will basically be."
"Which means you'll can't take part in... adult things." Perseus said with a wince, frowning a bit when he saw the group giggling among themselves. "Yeah, yeah, laugh it up everyone." he muttered. "So, what does everyone think about all this?" he asked.
A brief pause filled the room as the group discussed among themselves. "This all sounds really cool, but hunting is not my passion really. I'll probably be a hindrance and someone has to look out for the little ones." A girl said, getting a couple of nods from the others. Artemis smiled on hearing this. "Don't worry, we understand that the hunt will not be for everyone. But if you feel like you want to change your mind, then you are always welcome. Though make sure that happens before any of you turn eighteen, we won't allow you all then." she said receiving a couple of relived sighs on hearing this. They really did not want to make a goddess angry.
"Well I'm down, this sounds literally awesome. Plus, I don't care about remaining a virgin so sign me up!" Celyn said excitedly. Phoebe smiled at her friend's enthusiasm. "I want to join as well, though I'm not sure if I share similar sentiments as Celyn. But still, getting to hunt alongside two Olympian gods and not having to worry about being married off to some potential horrible person in the future? I'm down with it." Phoebe replied.
Perseus grinned. "I'm happy that you two are joining, glad to have you both on the team."
"I'm still worried that something horrible is going to pop up out of all this." Arius muttered. "Do we have to remain virgins forever?"
"Yes, as long as you're a part of our hunt. Though if there comes a time where you wish to leave, then of course you don't have to remain as one." Artemis replied.
"I would like to join this hunting group. I always wanted to be a hunter like my father before me, so this will be very beneficial." another boy, Ajax, said.
Soon enough, four girls that were Phoebe, Celyn, Acantha and Clio had decided to join the hunt. While from the boys' side, Ajax and Arius, had decided to join the hunt as well. The rest didn't really like the prospect of living in the wilderness or hunting, and some wanted to stay behind to check on their younger siblings and friends so they refrained from joining.
"Okay, so we are starting out with six. Not a bad number." Perseus said.
"I'll say it's a good number, we should start of small, and then expand once we have familiarized ourselves with how to take care of a hunt." Artemis said to Perseus, the two of them watching their newest recruits giving out their goodbyes to their friends. "Looks like it's time to make this official."
"Yep." Perseus said, as he watched the group come up to them. "Does this group have a name?" Clio asked.
"Uh... wow did we really not think of a name?" Perseus asked Artemis, who only blushed in response. "Well, we can call it..."
"The Hunters of Artemis." "The Hunters of Perseus." Perseus and Artemis said together, both realizing what the other had said.
"Why my name? This is mainly for you so you should have your name in the title." Perseus protested.
"Once again, you came up with the idea of a hunt in the first place so give yourself some credit arrowhead." Artemis argued back, the two soon going back and forth.
"Why do I have a feeling this is something we might see a lot during our time in the hunt?" Celyn whispered to the rest.
"They kind of seem like a couple. I wonder if they are." Acantha said.
Ajax raised an eyebrow on hearing this. "Maybe...but from what we have heard about gods, they could be siblings. Though that hasn't stopped them."
"Okay how about this. We let our hunters decide on the name. What do you guys think?" Perseus asked the group.
"Hmm, the name should be something that fits both of you guys since it is your hunt. Maybe...'The Hunters of Pertemis'?" Phoebe replied.
"Pertemis? Where did you get that name from?" Artemis asked.
"From combining both your names together. Perseus and Artemis. Pertemis."
"You can also get 'Arteseus' from combining our names, though Pertemis sounds better. But not a good hunting name." Perseus mumbled. "Can't we do something simple like 'Hunters of Olympus'?"
"Bo-ring. How about...'hunters of the night'? No?" Artemis asked.
"Hunters of...twilight? Twilight sounds really nice." Arius asked.
"Twilight sounds really good." Perseus said with a grin, but then pouted. "But that's my thing, we need something with Artemis as well."
Artemis groaned. "Let's put the name on hold for now. Alright, I'm going to list out the oath which each potential member has to say to ether me or Perseus. Once you recite it yourselves, I or Perseus will accept it. Is that understood?" she asked. The children nodded and soon enough, all of them had accepted the oath, with the improvised virgin oath attached, which Artemis had given them. They didn't look much different on the outside than before after receiving the god and goddesses' blessings, but Perseus and Artemis knew that they all now possess increased strength and endurance. Not to mention, their senses have been dialed up as well. They were now like actual demigods, but a bit stronger than that. A faint bluish-silver glow can also be seen surrounding them.
"Woah, I feel...really different." Celyn said as she flexed her arms. "Like, really different."
"Is this what partial immortality feels like? I can only imagine how full immortality is like." Arius muttered.
"As the very first members of the hunt, welcome. You all now are a part of something possibly larger than yourselves. Look out for each other as all of you are now a family." Artemis said with a formal tone. Perseus discretely got their attention and mouthed 'bow down' which they complied.
"Family? Looks like I'm now this idiot's brother huh." Acantha said as she pointed at Arius, who then received a light shove from him. The girls looked quite happy themselves as Phoebe and Clio got themselves in an arm-wrestling competition to test out their new strength, with Celyn and Ajax cheering them on. Perseus smiled at the scene as he glanced at Artemis who was gesturing him aside. "What's up." he asked.
"Nothing, just... I can't believe this is actually happening. We actually got our very ow hunt." Artemis said with a grin.
"Yep, except we don't have a name for it. Or hunting gear for our new hunters. And sleeping equipment, cooking utensils, shelter-"
"Okay, okay, we still have a few ways to go. But it'll be worth it." Artemis said, shaking her head fondly.
"Um... Lady Artemis?" Acantha asked out loud. "How are we supposed to address you and Lord Perseus?"
"Well, you can call me milady, or Artemis. Whatever you're comfortable with." Artemis replied.
"You guys can just call me Perseus; I will blatantly ignore you if you add lord." Perseus said in a deadpanned voice.
"What about Percy?" Celyn asked.
"No. No Percy either."
"But you did say we can call you Perseus. When we first met Apollo that is." Phoebe said.
Perseus took a deep breath and then let out a sigh. "Fine. You can call me Percy as well. But no more shortening my name."
"Yes!" Phoebe and Celyn shouted, high fiving each other.
"Okay, I want all of you'll to meet us outside the city today at midnight. I think that's enough time for you all to prepare and say any goodbyes for now. We will see you all later. Goodbye everyone" Artemis said. After giving out their farewells, Perseus and Artemis exited the safe house and began to walk along the road.
"I plan to visit Hephaestus for all the gear we will need. Do you know anyone who specializes in making clothes?" Artemis asked Perseus.
"I would say Athena, because of weaving though I'm not sure if she would like to be our seamstress. Maybe you can try Rhapso, I heard she makes stellar clothes. Last I heard, she's down in Athens I think." Perseus replied
"Perfect, I can head down there later on. In the meantime, can you go and mark some potential locations we can visit with the hunters. I really want to take them to Ceryneia and- wipe that damn smirk off your face!"
"Come on, the fact that you are still after that deer is hilarious as it is." Perseus said, only to start jumping up and down as he clutched his foot. "Ow ow ow, I thought foot stomps was reserved for Apollo." Perseus whined.
"And those who irritate me. See you later Perce." Artemis said as she gave a quick hug to Perseus, smirking internally when she saw him scowl. She then flashed away.
"Laugh it up Arty, laugh it up." Perseus muttered, as he walked to a nearby shadow. Only to feel himself float... and wet?
"Perseus my boy! It's been far too long." Pontus said, spreading his hands wide. "How is my favorite grandson doing?"
"...Pontus...you better have a good reason for bringing me over here. And how in the world did you get me here? Like, it felt so seamless." Perseus exclaimed.
"That's just how us old people roll." Pontus said with a chuckle, his hands in the same position. "Aren't you going to give me a hug?"
Perseus snorted. "I'll rather give an eel a hug than you, and that's saying something you know."
Pontus shrugged. "That's alright...because I'll give you a hug!" he cried, swimming up to Perseus and doing the deed.
"Ack, you smell of burnt seaweed." Perseus muttered, pushing the primordial off him. "Why am I here, I was just going to start some work."
"Work is boring, but hanging out with me? Is a treat on its own." Pontus said with a toothy grin. "Besides, it's about time I introduced you too my other favorite grandchild, my favorite granddaughter!"
"Can't you bother your other grandchildren, like your actual ones at least?" Perseus muttered. "I feel sorry for your other 'granddaughter'."
"Oh don't be, Frothy adores me. Let me just call her here... no. Oh no."
Perseus tilted his head to the side. "Oh no what?"
"She's nowhere in my waters, which is impossible because she spent the last fifty years floating around the seas." Pontus said, as he started moving about the water everywhere. "Where can she be?!"
"Maybe she's on some landmass, I think. I mean, if you can't sense her on water, then she definitely has to be on land." Perseus said.
"That seems possible. Let me trace her godly signature...yes! She was last seen floating around the coast of Cyprus. Oh, she really gave me a scare back then." Pontus said, laughing nervously. "Perseus." Pontus said, swimming up to Perseus and holding his arms. "Will you do me a- WHERE IS THE UMBRA ORE!" Pontus shrieked as he stared at Perseus's bare hands.
"Uh...I gave it to my mom, with some hellfire ash. You know, to enchant them and all like you mentioned." Perseus said, tugging his arm from Pontus's grip.
"Oh...oh my grandchildren do love scaring me. First Frothy, now you." Pontus said, visibly relaxing. "But, if you want to give them away, I can always take them off your-"
"No thanks. If I ever die or fade, my vambraces are coming with me." Perseus said, a bit forcefully.
"Oh... but yeah, as I was saying, can you go to Cyprus and check on Frothy for me? I would love to go myself, but that would mean going on Gaia's territory and I do not want to see old dirt face, at all. ...Pleaseeee."
"Alright, I'll check on her." Perseus muttered, backing away. It was then he noticed a staff lying next to Pontus's throne. And while it looked weird since it was made up of fossilized coral, what caught Perseus's attention was the glowing rock that was placed on top of the staff. It was quite a massive transparent looking pearl, with swirling smoke inside it that changed colors from orange to green and then purple.
"Ah, I see my toy has gained your interest huh." Pontus said with a chuckle, raising his hand. The staff flew, or floated into his hands, and the orb beginning to pulse as soon as it made contact with Pontus.
"Is that, by any chance your prime resource?" Perseus asked, slowly being mesmerized by the swirling colors.
"That's right sonny. This is one of the many Ailment stones out there in my realm. Though there are quite few in number, it has been the case since the first titan war." Pontus said sadly.
"What do you mean by that?" Perseus asked. "Shouldn't something like this be abundant?"
"That is true. But, Oceanus, he managed to raid my entire realm for these ailment stones, in order to get in Kronos's good books. The titans used my resource to heal their troops and allies, which in turn also extended the war you can say. It did take place for ten years."
Perseus frowned. "You couldn't have stopped them? Like come on, you're the Pontus! Primordial of all water bodies and wherever water exists. I'm sure a titan wouldn't have been much of a problem for you.
Pontus sighed. "There were a lot of factors that hindered me, most notably Gaia. She...she was brutal. Very brutal." he said, choking up a bit.
"...Grand...Pontus?" Perseus said slowly.
Pontus took a deep breath as he let out a weak chuckle. "Forgive me, I never wanted our conversations to stary away. And did I hear a 'Grandpa' somewhere young man?"
Perseus gave a small smile. "Probably." he said glancing up. "You want me to check on this 'Frothy'?"
"Oh yes, yes, go now. I don't want her to get injured by some random monster so hurry up. Oh, and a quick warning. She's a bit...naïve when it comes to obvious things. Doesn't help she was mostly floating in the sea so you might find her a bit frustrating, but please bear with her." Pontus said, making a shooing away gesture.
"Will do. And Pontus, if you want me to visit, just send me the address. Don't randomly summon me please in the future." Perseus said with a grin as he swam to a nearby shadow and went through it. Pontus shook his head fondly as he stared at the Ailment stone. "No good moping about the past...I have to buckle myself up if I want things done." Pontus muttered, swimming away into the dark.
Perseus popped up in Olympus, straight into the marketplace and scaring a bunch of satyrs as well. Perseus internally groaned as Artemis's words echoed inside his head, and mentally noted down to throw Apollo off a cliff. He then jogged over to Hermes's merchandise shop, where the owner himself was trying to bargain with a bargainer.
"I'm telling you; you are not going to get quality like this anywhere here. And you want to know why? Because this cap is made in Bangladesh, a really beautiful country far away from Greece. And since the country is out if our reach, the quality will be out of our reach as well." Hermes said, nodding along with a minor god. "So, you're up for purchasing it? Excellent! That will be one thousand drachmas please."
"Thousand drachmas...yeesh Hermes." Perseus muttered as he approached the counter. "Hey Hermes."
"Percy! Perce my cuz, mah' man. How are you doing today?" Hermes asked.
"Quite well, until you mentioned some names I don't want to be associated with." Perseus said through gritted teeth. "I need a map of the world."
"One map of the world coming right up!" Hermes announced, disappearing in a cloud of smoke. And then instantaneously reappeared. "Here you go man. That will be a hundred drachmas."
"Hundred?! I can go to Athena and get a map of Greece for free, why do I need to pay hundred?!" Perseus exclaimed.
"Ahhh but Percy, booby, cuzzy. This isn't some ordinary map of the world! This is a chonky piece of work! You can zoom in, zoom out on the map. It'll track your steps and it has markers as well. Voice command to booth. Plus, it is very much updated and I can confirm that this map has every single piece of land mass and water body located on this thing. Look at it! There is this piece of land way down under, and another one that's filled to the brim with snow and ice. Then look, there all these cool little islands and two large land masses to the west that is connected by such a small itty little bit of land, like wow! So, are you convinced?" Hermes asked.
Perseus mentally screamed as he nodded stiffly. "You're buying the drinks when we go out with the others." Perseus said, handing over a pouch to Hermes. Hermes bowed and placed the map in his hand. "Thank you for your purchase cuz, have a nice day!"
Perseus moved out of the marketplace as he unrolled the map. "Let's see...zoom in?" Perseus said, as he watched the map zoom in. "That's kind of cool. Okay, locate Cyprus for me." Perseus said, a glowing dot immediately coming out from an island east. "That's really quite far. Hope I'll make it." Perseus muttered as he traced a path from Olympus to Cyprus. "Welp, better get going then." Perseus thought, as he ran headfirst into a wall. And disappeared through a shadow.
After numerous pit stops, most of them in Turkey, Perseus finally managed to reach Cyprus by late afternoon. He let out a tired gasp as he rested on the ground, panting heavily. "I should have really made Pontus flash me over there," he thought as he slowly got up. He then used his godly senses and floated above for a bit as he scanned his surroundings. Cyprus only had like a couple of villages, a bunch of beaches, and a ton of forest area. Quite a lovely island as well. Perseus flew over the villages, trying to search for a godly presence but fell short. It wasn't until he started to comb the beaches that he found quite a large godly presence coming from south. He then flashed there, and was greeted by a surprising sight.
The Horai were present, giggling among themselves as they held out various dresses out for each other. Perseus coughed a bit, which managed to get their attention.
"Percyyy!" Spring squealed as she launched herself at the god. "Oh, it has been too long! And you have grown so much, but I bet you're still the same cute and adorable little troublemaker huh? Yes you are, yes you are!" Spring said, squishing Perseus's cheeks.
"You're smothering the poor guy, cut it Spring." Autumn said, watching as Spring dragged Perseus over to show him the dresses.
"Be hones now, what color looks great on me? Pastel green, or pastel blue?"
"Uh...they both look on great on you?" Perseus said slowly.
"Aww, quite the charmer huh? I'm not surprised." Summer said, holding Perseus close. "What brings you out here so far away? *gasp* Were you searching for us!" Summer said out loud.
"No, I'm not searching for you all. Though I am searching for someone." Perseus quickly said, slipping from Summer and gaining a groan from her as well. "Wait, are you searching for Artemis? Is she here?!" Summer asked quickly.
"Um...no." Perseus replied. "She's out doing her own thing right now."
"Really?! Oh that's so wonderful! I'm glad she's out of your grip, always used to tail around you, never quite liked that." Summer replied, latching herself on Perseus once again.
"Only because you were intimidated by her." Autumn said, smirking when she saw Summer giving a very murderous glare.
"Anyway." Perseus said, once again detaching himself from Summer. "Have you guys seen a woman possibly, a female going by the name 'Frothy' around here. Though I doubt that's actually her name."
"Did someone call me? I'm pretty sure I heard someone say Frothy out there." a serene voice spoke up. Perseus glanced at place where the voice came from to find a woman standing there. But he didn't get a good look at her as he immediately turned around with a short scream as he frantically covered his face with his hands.
"W-Why is s-she naked!" Perseus cried, slowly turning golden as ichor pooled in his face. The Horai giggled at his plight as they walked to the other lady.
"Dear, we told you to wear that dress. This is what I meant when we said the others won't be able to glance at you in your birthday suit." Autumn said, taking the woman away.
"You can open your eyes now Percy, she's gone." Spring said. Perseus, moved his fingers aside as he frantically glanced around, sighing in relief on seeing that the nude woman was nowhere to be found. "Oh thank the Fates. Who was that anyways, and why was she even nude in the first place. The beach is that side for crying out loud."
"That was 'Frothy' the person you were searching for." Summer said a bit glumly. "She turned up at the island and to us like half an hour ago, nude mind you. Quite a character let me tell you, didn't even know what clothes were!"
"I see..." Perseus said, Pontus's words about her echoing in his mind. "Let's just hope she's not too frustrating." he thought.
"Okay she's ready people!" Autumn announced, bringing 'Frothy' with her. As soon as Perseus took one glance at the new arrival, he immediately felt his body still, mind numb, and legs behaving like jelly.
'Frothy' had long wavy dark red hair that reached below her backside. She had a perfect tan and mesmerizing almond shaped eyes that continuously changed colors, like a kaleidoscope. Sky blue, emerald green, dark violet, the whole package. Perseus literally got a nosebleed as he stared at her flawless figure and dazzling smile. She was wearing a beautiful white gossamer dress with intricate gold patterns, a delicate gold crown on her head and a pearl necklace. Perseus definitely noticed that he was breathing heavily and desperately tried to avert his gaze, and before he knew it, he was face to face with the woman.
"You called me 'Frothy'. Only my grandfather calls me that. Which means...you must be 'Kelpie'."
"...Uh-huh."
"Is that...a yes?"
"Uh-huh."
"Can you say anything other than 'uh-huh'?"
"Uh-huh."
"This is what I was afraid of." Autumn muttered, running up to Perseus. "Hey, Artemis is behind you!" Autumn shouted in Perseus's ear.
"Wh-What Artemis?! Where, where is... she's not here." Perseus said, confused. "Wait, why am I bleeding?"
"Because you were staring at her." Autumn said, pointing at 'Frothy'. Perseus glanced at 'Frothy' as well, his mouth slowly opening as drool started to come out. "Uh-huh." he replied.
"Oh for Zeus's sake, Perseus snap out of it!" Autumn shouted, grabbing Perseus's shoulders and shaking him back and forth. This once again broke him out of his stupor. "Ow, ow, ow, okay Autumn enough. I'm alright, I'm alright." Perseus muttered, breaking free from the season goddess. "Okay..." Perseus said, as he turned to once again face 'Frothy' again. "Uh...I'm really sorry about that first impression. I usually don't act like this."
'Frothy' giggled. "That's alright, even though this is a first time. I am Aphrodite, not Frothy which I'm sure our grandfather must have mentioned a bunch of times. It's a real pleasure to finally meet you...Kelpie. Oh, I am so sorry but I really don't know your actual name and grandfather never mentioned it."
"Um, that's alright... I didn't know your name until now. I'm Perseus. Just Perseus, and please don't shorten it." Perseus said with a small smile as he rubbed the back of his neck.
"Perseus? That is quite a beautiful name. Very dashing." Aphrodite replied.
"Thanks. I got that name when I was shipped to the Olympians from Night via the Fate express." Perseus said with a grin, making Aphrodite laugh. "Wait, why did I make a joke on my name?" Perseus thought.
"Looks like we're forgotten." muttered Summer as she stared at Perseus and Aphrodite. "Come on sisters, let us continue our fruit picking." Summer said with a huff, dragging her sisters along with her.
"So, what brings you out here on solid land if you don't mind me asking. You actually gave Pontus quite a fright when he couldn't sense you in the water." Perseus asked.
Aphrodite sighed. "I was bored. Ever since I was born, Pontus has been looking out for me. Which is sweet and all but he's so overprotective. He kept on convincing me to come down to his palace, not to go on land, and all that nonsense. I was tired, so I decided to take a stroll at the nearest land I can find and here I am."
"That's, kind of understandable. My mother was like that for some time, but thankfully she eased up over the years. But uh... forgive for being so blunt but is this like some kind of true form of yours? Because it's honestly making your godly aura which I can sense climbing up exponentially.
"Thank you for the kind compliments Perseus. But no, this is, what did those old ladies say, my not so true form? I don't know, details are a bit murky. But I must say, your aura is quite powerful as well." Aphrodite said, tilting her head to the side. "Are you sure you're a god? I was told you are a son of Hestia but this..."
"Not exactly. My birth mother is actually Nyx. That might explain my aura." Perseus replied.
"Ohhh, that makes sense. My father is Ouranos, which is why my aura is powerful too. And maybe even Pontus? Not really sure about that. But it's wonderful to find another being just like me. A god, who is a child of a primordial. You're like a... distant brother in a way!" Aphrodite said, as she stepped closer to Perseus. "And let me just say, while I only met one male before you, you are the most beautiful natural godly specimen of the male species I have ever seen. And as the goddess of beauty, I can tell that."
"Oh...um, thanks a lot? Wait, you said you are the goddess of beauty? Does that mean you already know your domains?" Perseus asked.
"That is correct. You are talking to the goddess of love, beauty, and pleasure." Aphrodite said, winking at the last bit. "The Fates appeared in front of me as soon as I arrived on shore and gave me my domains. They also gave me some rags to wear, but they were dirty. Oh, and they mentioned I am supposed to make my way to this Mount Olympus as I have to take my place among the council, something like that. ...Do you know where it might be?" she asked.
Perseus's eyes widened on hearing this. "Wow, the Fates are really giving out new members left and right huh. But yeah, I can definitely take you to Olympus and introduce you to the other gods. But uh..." Perseus said, as let out a chuckle. "I'm kind of burned out at the moment due to getting here in the first place. You wouldn't mind waiting for a couple of hours?" he asked.
Aphrodite giggled as she rested her hand on Perseus's shoulder. "I don't mind, especially if I get to hang out with you. Come Perseus, would like to take a walk with me on the beach?"
Hehehehe, look who's finally arrived. Our favorite goddess, the one who we always cheer for when she appears in a romance fic staring Percy. The one and only...FROTHY! *Ahem* I meant Aphrodite. But oh yeah, things are definitely going to heat up, but not enough to make this fic M rated, nope!
And the hunt is on! The hunters of _ have finally arrived. Wait why is there a dash? That's because you my dear readers are getting the opportunity to name this group of hunters. Whoever comes up with the best name, will get a shoutout and the name of course sticking in this fic. You can put your suggestions in the reviews, or can PM me personally, it's your choice.
A/N- Well, this is a new one I'm adding. So yeah, chapter has been rewritten as seen above, I hope you guys like this. And this is for those people who are asking about the interaction between Percy and Aphrodite being a bit... too much I guess you can say. I've toned the interaction a bit so there you go. But if you all are still not satisfied with that, then why? Because in all honesty, do you guys really think Percy is going to act indifferent on seeing the literal personification of female beauty for the first time? He was a mess as a demigod in PJO and a mess here. Heck, all gods were a mess on seeing Aphrodite which almost led to a civil war. So the reaction is honestly a given. You can't even deny Aphrodite's love because of her magical belt which can literally make anyone fall in love with her. And, by being a literal offspring of a primordial(s), she is going to be mad powerful in anything up her alley. Now, I'm not going to add some love triangle shenanigans and what not in this fic or have Aphrodite fawn over Perseus in every other scene. In fact, I have something interesting planned for her. So please stop thinking this is going to be some perodite fic or whatever because that's hilarious to think like that cause the same could have been said for Hecate as well. Or any other girl who has flirted with Percy. Pertemis is going to happen, sooner than you might think, and I would hate to unnecessarily rush that relationship for no reason so time will be taken. Other than that, sorry for this longass rant XP
And if you'll are confused about the virgin oath the hunters had to take, I had to add something to make future myths make sense in a way. Plus the whole patron of kids and young maidens. And I didn't make Artemis and Perseus take that oath or anything like that so don't worry. Though...they can still love each other without doing the Devil's Tango... . Which is also the actual case for PJO Artemis in a sense, but that's a whole another topic I don't want to delve in now XD.
Once again, thank you guys once again for reading and supporting this fic and I will see you all in the next update. Bye!...\/
