Chapter 17: The Master's Test

Gulangyu Beach…

"I must decline your offer." Jinbe stated politely as he stood up from the chair.

"As shall I, I will not participate in this useless endeavor." Mihawk stated as he stood up.

"I shall not help you, for it is beneath me." Hancock scoffed as she got up, preparing to leave.

"So, that leaves you three." Pain said as he looked at Crocodile, Doflamingo, and Kisame.

"I'll gladly take you up on this chance." Kisame stated with an excited grin.

"It is as you said, strong allies can help with my goals." Crocodile said as he smoked his cigar.

Doflamingo just laughed.

"As fun as it will be," He chuckled as he held up his hand, flexing his fingers. "Why don't you show us who you really are."

Pain's eyes narrowed as Jinbe, Hancock, and Hawkeye left the beach.

"That is none of your concern, Doflamingo." Pain stated as he stood up, holding his hand out.

Two Months Later, Bael Training Ground…

'Kami-e!' Naruto thought as he activated the Evasion Power when Lucci attacked.

Lucci punched, Naruto was able to duck backwards.

Lucci swiped, Naruto was able to contort and evade a direct hit.

Lucci used Shigan: Oren, and Naruto was able to weave through the attacks with effort.

"You are doing much better." Lucci said as he ended his attack, letting Naruto collapse and breath. "You aren't hurting your back anymore."

Naruto flipped Lucci off as he continued to gasp for air, soaked in sweat.

"Well, tomorrow is your day off from training, use it well. Because when we meet up again…" Lucci said with menace and warning, making Naruto sweat more in fear. "I will be testing you. So, get some rest."

Lucci vanished with Soru, leaving Naruto alone as the sun was setting.

"Damn… I can barely move…" Naruto whined as he had a hard time getting back up.

Reaching into his pocket, Naruto pulled out the cellphone he was given and shot a text to Sairaorg before he closed his eyes.

Sairaorg found Naruto twenty minutes later, sleeping like a baby.

Next Day…

"You want me to learn how to Promote?" Naruto asked Sairaorg as he and his King stood alone in the garden.

"You have been with us for just under a year, Naruto." Sairaorg explained to the ten-year-old. "You have been training in your martial arts and swordsmanship, but you haven't had any training in your devil abilities."

Naruto thought about it.

"Yeah, you are right." Naruto said as he nodded his head in agreement. "So… what is first?"

"Well, let me re-explain this." Sairaorg said as he and Naruto sat down in the gazebo. "Like in Chess, when a Pawn enters enemy territory during the Rating Game, they are able to Promote into a Rook, Knight, Bishop, or Queen. When outside of a Rating Game, Kings can give their Pawns permission to Promote. Rooks are very durable and have enhanced strength, but lack speed. Knights get enhanced speed and mobility, but lack defense. Bishops get a giant boost in magic, but in your case it would be chakra, and enhances all magic/chakra abilities/techniques. The Queen is the most balanced, having the best of the Rook, Bishop, and Knight Pieces."

"Wow… so I can become stronger, faster, or gain a boost in power… but that sounds cheap." Naruto pointed out. "I mean, I am working to become stronger, so this Promotion seems cheap to me."

Sairaorg smiled as he patted Naruto's head, much to the latter's irritation.

"You are quite mature for your age, but think of it as your own ability now."

"How so?"

"Think of it this way." Sairaorg pointed out. "When you use your hybrid form, it boosts your physical attributes."

"I don't… Oh, I see." Naruto said as he understood. "It is a new ability of mine, so I shouldn't get down about it."

Sairaorg chuckled.

"You want to try it out now?" he asked Naruto.

"Sure." Naruto replied as he got out of his chair.

"Permission to Promote." Sairaorg said.

Naruto felt a small tingly sensation in his chest.

"Promotion to Rook." Naruto said instinctively.

There was no physical change or feeling, but Naruto could tell the difference.

Naruto raised his fist, and smashed it into the ground, causing a crater.

"Shigan!"

Naruto's finger penetrated the ground, causing a bigger crater.

"Wow…" Naruto said as he was amazed at how much more destructive his Shigan was when Promoted to a Rook. "Can I promote to a Knight?"

Sairaorg nodded, and the same tingly sensation was felt once again.

Naruto looked at the end of the garden, and ran to the fence, blinking at how fast he made it there.

'Soru.'

With his enhanced speed, his Soru technique moved faster, and farther than normal.

"Bishop."

Naruto felt his chakra increase several times its normal capacity.

Naruto drew Yubashiri and turned to a nearby tree.

"Sanjuroku Pound Ho." Naruto said as he swung Yubashiri.

The usual projectile attack flew outward, but instead of cutting the tree and flying several feet before disappearing… Naruto cleaved through the tree, and it kept going for dozens of feet before it vanished.

"ALRIGHT!" Naruto laughed as he jumped into the air.

"Now you want to try the Queen Promotion?" Sairaorg asked Naruto as he landed back on the ground.

"Sure…" Naruto replied in excitement.

Sairaorg smirked as Naruto had a bright look in his eyes.

"Promotion to Queen."

Naruto could not believe how different it felt when the Promotion activated.

It was like a huge caffeine rush in the best possible way.

He felt stronger, faster, and his magic was stronger.

"Wow…" was all he could say before he exited Queen, instantly feeling woozy.

"Woah, I got you." Sairaorg said as he caught Naruto, keeping him from falling.

"Am I supposed to feel like this after ending it?" Naruto asked.

"You are young, so of course it will take a lot out of you." Sairaorg explained as he put Naruto in the chair.

"Imma… nap then… train…" Naruto mumbled as he fell asleep.

Hour later…

Naruto stood alone in the training ground, holding his hands out with one channeling chakra as the other tried to spin it.

'Come on, complete you damn Rasengan!' Naruto thought before his chakra blew up in his face. "DAMN IT!"

Getting back up, Naruto tried again, his chakra spinning in his palm while he tried to combine the rotation and power together to complete the Rasengan.

Only for it to explode again.

"Damn, why can't I get this correctly. I am following Pervy Sage's notes, so why am I failing?" Naruto asked in irritation as he could feel his hands sting.

Flexing his hands several times to make sure he still had feeling in them, Naruto decided to not destroy his hands on his Rasengan training.

'I guess I'll continue my fire generating technique from Kitsunebi-ryu.' Naruto thought as he put away Jiraiya's notes and drew Shigure. 'Okay, make it like I am striking steel with flint.'

His chakra channeling into Shigure, Naruto swung Shigure downward, igniting the blade into fire for a few seconds before they fizzled out.

'Hm, probably have to keep fueling it with chakra… but that isn't mentioned in the journal.' Naruto thought as he reread Kurama's journal.

Meanwhile…

"So, your little student is ready to take the test, Lucci." An associate of Lucci's asked.

His name was Kaku, and he was a Giraffe demon, with all of his animal features hidden to look perfectly human.

"I can't wait to see this brat you mentioned, Lucci." Another associate laughed as he chugged sake.

This was Jabra, a wolf yokai. He, like Kaku, kept his animal features hidden.

"Yes, I believe Naruto is ready to take his test to become a Master." Lucci said as he drank.

"But, didn't you tell us Naruto is ten?" Kaku asked as he ate steak. "Don't you think he is a little young?"

"I was a master before I was fourteen," Lucci reminded Kaku with a dark glare. "And as his master, I say he is ready."

"No problem from me, Lucci." Jabra laughed as he jeered at Kaku. "Just this weakling is scared you're going to kill him."

"It's a perfectly reasonable worry, you mangy wolf!" Kaku stated angrily.

Lucci sighed as his comrades argued.

Next Morning…

Naruto was in the training grounds the next morning after breakfast.

He was currently stretching, waiting for Lucci to appear.

Naruto stopped when he caught Lucci's scent, along with two others.

Naruto turned.

"GYA!" He screamed when Hattori appeared in front of him before pecking Naruto in the eye. "HATTORI!"

Naruto held his hand out and swiped at the pigeon as he held his aching eye.

Naruto's ears perked as he heard Lucci's chuckles.

"Good morning, Naruto." Lucci said as Hattori returned to his Master's shoulder.

"Morning sensei." Naruto said as he bowed to his master.

"So, this is the kid you talked about."

"He is a bit smaller than I had expected."

Naruto saw Jabra and Kaku, and could instantly tell they were strong from how they carried themselves.

"You work with Sensei, don't you?" Naruto asked Kaku and Jabra.

"Yes, we do." Kaku said as he smiled, holding out his hand to Naruto. "I am Kaku, nice to meet you."

Naruto shook Kaku's hand, smiling.

He already liked Kaku.

"I am Jabra, the Master of Tekkai." Jabra announced as he took Naruto's hand, nearly crushing it in a toxic show of masculinity.

Naruto didn't have an initial liking of Jabra.

"Lucci told us that you are trying to master swordsmanship on top of Rokushiki." Kaku said as he held out his hands and two Shirasaya Katana, the same ones Naruto had as spares. "Luckily for you, I am the master of Rankyaku, and in turn I created Yontoryu, the Four-Sword Style."

Naruto's eyes widened in interest.

"You don't want to learn that loser's fighting style," Jabra declared as he pumped his fist. "I am creator of Tekkai-Kenpo, meaning I can move while Tekkai is activated."

Naruto was interested… in both.

'Sure, I want to master Santoryu someday, but having various swordsmanship techniques is good.' Naruto thought as he looked at Kaku and then at Jabra. 'And if I am able to defend myself while being able to move, I like the sound of that too.'

"Hey, let the kid pick which style he would like to learn." Kaku stated in irritation, but not aggressively.

"I know that, I am just telling him which one is better."

"Wait, you guys are going to teach me?" Naruto asked with stars in his eyes.

Jabra chuckled.

"Of course, but only if you pass the test."

"Test?"

Kaku quirked an eyebrow as Lucci discarded his upper clothing, revealing his arm tattoos and his back scars.

"Naruto, we will fight." Lucci told his student. "If you win, you will be granted the title of Rokushiki Master, and I will allow you to train with Jabra and Kaku. Remember this," Lucci's eyes narrowed as Hattori flew off of Lucci's shoulder. "Rokushiki is flexible. It is a sole Martial Art, or a supplement to your fighting style."

Naruto felt terrified at his mentor's words.

"Hold on, Lucci."

The yokai turned and saw Sairaorg enter the training ground.

"Bael."

"You want Naruto to fight you at his best, right?" Sairaorg asked the Leopard.

"Of course, this test wouldn't work unless Naruto fights at his best." Lucci reiterated.

"Well then," Sairaorg looked at Naruto. "Naruto, you have permission to Promote to Queen."

Naruto blinked and nodded.

"Promotion to Queen." Naruto repeated as he felt a massive influx of power.

"Hm, this is the Pawn Promotion. I thought he would have been a Rook." Kaku said as he put his swords away before he scratched his chin with a smirk. "This might be more entertaining than originally thought."

"It sure is gonna be fun." Jabra cackled as he pulled out a jug of sake. "I am going to enjoy this."

Jabra lay across the ground as Naruto and Lucci prepared to fight.

"Get your swords, kid." Lucci told Naruto. "This will test every aspect of you as a fighter. Your skill, instinct, techniques, and improvability."

Naruto nodded and summoned Yubashiri and Shigure to his side, but did not draw them.

Kaku whistled.

"Those are some nice blades." He commented as he memorized all the Meito blades. "Shigure, a Meito. And Yubashiri, a Skillful Meito."

"Now, my pupil." Lucci said in a murderous tone as he entered his hybrid form while Naruto followed suit.

The peerage felt nervous as they had not seen Lucci fight, but knew he had more experience than the Pawn of Bael, who was ten years old.

Lucci didn't enter a battle stance, but stood with a calm demeanor that unnerved Naruto as he took a fighting stance.

Lucci held up one hand, his fingers closing with his index under his thumb.

"Tobu Shigan: Bachi." He said as he flicked his finger.

Naruto's stomach was hit, but not punctured due to his enhanced durability, by the compressed pin-point shockwave, but it immediately started to bruise.

'He used Shigan as a projectile! I didn't event think that was…' Naruto thought as Lucci vanished, but instead of being unseen, Naruto saw what appeared to be a zig-zag trail of Rankyaku blades in mid-air.

"Kamisori!" Lucci said as he used a fusion of Geppo and Soru, closing the distance at a speed Naruto couldn't follow as he was now above his pupil. "Rankyaku: Hyobi!"

Lucci kicked an advanced Rankyaku, taking the form of a spiral instead of the normal crescent blade.

Naruto kicked his own Rankyaku, but it proved fruitless as he barely had time to dodge.

'Sensei isn't joking.' Naruto thought as fear started to turn his blood cold as dust kicked up into the air, covering him and clouding his vision of Lucci, who didn't attack. 'If I fail, I might die…'

Naruto's chest felt tight as if someone was clenching his lungs with tears in his eyes from the pain in his stomach from the flying Shigan.

"DON'T LET HIM INTIMIDATE YOU, NARUTO!" Sairaorg shouted through the dust which was starting to clear. "FEAR IS A WEAPON THE ENEMY CAN USE AGAINST YOU!"

Naruto looked up and saw Lucci above him.

Lucci flipped, his feet upward as he stared down.

'Kamisori!' Lucci said as he used his Geppo/Soru combo to close the distance, raising his index finger.

Naruto stepped forward, grabbing Yubashiri.

"Ittoryu-Iai…" Naruto jumped up into the air with Geppo.

'Tekkai!'

"Shishi Sonson!"

Yubashiri was drawn faster than Lucci could see, but he knew its destination.

"Wow, that kid knows a Iaijutsu technique." Kaku said in honest surprise. "That is quite advanced…"

Jabra laughed as Naruto and Lucci landed on the ground.

Yubashiri was re-sheathed… with Lucci touching his chest and feeling the sting of a very shallow cut.

'He broke through my Tekkai.' Lucci thought with a smirk. "Seimi Kikan: Kami-e Bushin."

Lucci's hulking muscles thinned and became smaller, more compact, and making him look lighter.

Lucci used Geppo and appeared before Naruto, who took a step back in shock.

"SHIGAN: OREN!"

'Kami-e!'

Naruto was barely able to evade all of Lucci's attacks, the leopard's claws striking Naruto every third or second strike.

'Wait, I can…' Naruto thought as he kept dodging, setting his arms to his sides. "Muttoryu…"

"HM?"

"TATSUMAKI!" Naruto shouted as he spun around, Kami-e making it look like his body twisted seven times over before spinning like a rubber band.

A blunt force twister struck Lucci, sending him skyward, but he kept his posture.

'Using Kami-e and his Swordsmanship, he is on the way to…' Lucci thought as he saw Naruto make four Shadow clones, all of them drawing Shigure and Yubashiri.

"Nigiri…" One said as he held out his swords to the left. "Toro!"

The clone swung his swords upward, sending two projectiles toward Lucci, as well as himself.

"Tekkai: Utsugi!" Lucci said as he was struck by the Toro, sending the attacks back at the clone, popping it.

"Otoro!"

Lucci turned to see two clones with their swords above them, swinging them downward with gravity complimenting the attack as four chakra projectiles were sent at Lucci.

"Rankyaku: Gaicho!" Lucci declared as he kicked a bird shaped Rankyaku at the clones.

However, the attack lost much of its stopping power by the clone's attacks, but the clones were destroyed by the Gaicho, as Lucci evaded the Otoro.

Lucci's eyes widened as he saw Naruto and his last clone, with Yubashiri sheathed, holding Shigure in his right hand as he used his left hand to grasp his right wrist as the clone had both swords sheathed.

'What is he…'

"Hiryu: Kaen!" Naruto shouted as he slashed Lucci, who didn't have time to use Tekkai.

However, instead of just cutting Lucci's side, it was ignited in fire.

'Little bastard!' Lucci thought as he backhanded Naruto in the face, sending him into the ground.

"RASENGAN!"

Lucci's eyes widened as the clone used an incomplete Rasengan and struck the same place as Naruto, but when it struck, not only did it detonate, destroying the clone, but it also enhanced the fire into being stronger, giving it a blue hue.

"Shit, he struck three injuries onto Lucci!" Jabra declared in shock, chugging more sake.

"That sword style he is using… it couldn't be…" Kaku mumbled as he felt like he had heard some of the techniques Naruto had used.

Lucci, meanwhile, landed back on the ground, gripping his side.

It was no longer enflamed, having been dowsed by Lucci, but the fur had been burned and flesh had been exposed.

'He got me to well. If that technique was completed, I would probably not be standing right now.' Lucci thought as Naruto got up. "Seimei Kikan: Kaijo."

With his technique cancelled, Lucci's muscles returned to their normal, bigger size.

Naruto spun, attempting a Rankyaku, only to have it cancelled by Lucci's.

"SHIGAN: MADARA!" Both shouted as they rapid-fired Shigan, abandoning defense with offense.

Lucci ended, and then took a defensive position.

"Tekkai: Utsugi!"

Naruto's fingers hit Lucci, only for their kinetic energy to bounce back and hit Naruto, who was able to dodge most with Kami-e, but still taking damage.

Blood started to spurt from Naruto's injuries.

'I lost…' Naruto thought as his knees hit the ground, entering his human form. 'Damn it…'

"So, Jabra, Kaku…" Lucci asked his comrades as he powered down as well, standing over Naruto as Sairaorg checked his Pawn. "Do you think Naruto is worthy of the title of Master?"

"I believe with more training and experience; Naruto can be a Master." Kaku said as he thought about it. "But after that display, his variety of abilities, I say Naruto is deserving of the title of Master."

"He got a massive injury on you, so I say he is a Master." Jabra stated with a chuckle.

Lucci glared at Jabra, but turned his attention to Hattori, who cooed with a nod.

"Uzumaki D. Naruto." Lucci declared as he stared at his student, who stared back. "It is by the will of the Master's, with your exceptional display of your abilities, and the dealing of an injury on me," Lucci bowed, arm across his chest. "You are hereby a Master of Rokushiki."

"I think he is out cold…" Sairaorg said as he shook Naruto, only for Naruto to just move in his arms without any resistance or vocal recognition he heard Lucci.

A vein bulged on Lucci's forehead.

"STUPID BRAT!" Lucci shouted as he pulled Naruto from Sairaorg and started punching him. "YOU LISTEN WHEN YOUR SENSEI TALKS TO YOU!"

Chapter 17, DONE!

This chapter was difficult, but I got it out.

Naruto is now a Rokushiki Master, of the Basics at least. He will become a true master if he masters Rokuogan.

Which I don't think Naruto will learn since he will have so many options in combat already.

Now, Naruto has the options to learn Yontoryu and Tekkai Kenpo.
