Chapter 3

Serena woke up the next morning stretching when she noticed she couldn't stretch all the way. She looked over to notice she was in Darien's arms and all she was wearing was Andrew's shirt. Serena jumped out of the bed so fast trying not to wake Darien up. Then she thought about it did they do something last night then she was mortified.

Serena then glanced at the large clock on his wall to notice it was 7 in the morning. Oh no, she said out loud waking Darien up in the process. Darien woke up looking at Serena who still had an embarrassed but scared look. What's going on he asked still with a hint of sleepiness in his voice. I….… I….. don't know Serena stumbled over her words I woke up and I was in your room in your bed in your arms.

The thought almost made Serena want to explode how did they end up like this? Then she looked at Darien to finally ask did we ummm you know. Darien smirked at her and got out of bed as Serena noticed he was only in his boxers. Serena wanted to faint. Darien told her no we didn't do anything but you were tired and the couch didn't look too comfortable so I laid you down on the bed. And the embrace part you kept getting closer and closer to me maybe you like to cuddle I thought. This made Serena calm down a little. I'm sorry I thought otherwise it's just I've never….Darien walked over to her placing a finger over her lips. Shush, it's ok don't over worry yourself you're safe with me.

Serena was a little stunned by Darien's gesture and his comment. Then she noticed the way he was staring down at her and felt intimidated again. Will you excuse me I really need to use the bathroom. Serena rushed around Darien to his bathroom and before closing the door noticed Darien never took his eyes off her. Serena shut the door and slid down onto the floor. Oh my was all she could say she didn't understand why he was looking at her the way he was. And where the hell was Andrew?

While Serena was in the bathroom Darien made a few calls. Hello yes, this is Darien Shields let my father know I'll be in to speak with him in his office in about two hours, then Darien ended his call to go to his walk-in closet to find himself something to wear. Serena left the bathroom to approach Darien umm do you have a toothbrush towel and washcloth to use? Yes of course and I'll send one of my housekeepers to get your clothes as well. Darien called Sue to get Serena's clothes and extra toiletries. When Sue arrived at Darien's room with the things he asked for she looked between Darien and Serena with a knowing look on her face. Serena looked down in embarrassment at what the sight may have seemed like to the older woman and ran back into the bathroom.

Serena stood in the shower trying to process what was going on. Was she overreacting? She had never really been in the company of many men before guys from her hometown never really tried to hit on her. As she was showering in Darien's shower with the class walls she heard the bathroom door open. She thought she was imagining it when she realized he was at the sink brushing his teeth and thanked the stars that the steam from her show was keeping her covered. Then Serena spoke up, um what are you going in here? Oh, I'm sorry Serena I just wanted to kill time I thought while you shower I could brush my teeth and then we could switch when you're done. I kind of have to get to work after I drop you off.

Serena said nothing else she just continued with her shower while Darien continued to stay in the bathroom even after he was finished brushing his teeth. Soon Serena had to come out of the shower and wrap a towel around herself. She stood there in front of the shower waiting to see if Darien was going to try something. Well, are you going to step aside or are you waiting for something? Darien asked her. The blush from her embarrassment was evident because Darien laughed so hard. Serena stepped to the side while Darien wasted no time undressing in front of Serena like this was a normal thing to do. Serena averted her gaze elsewhere and Darien smirked and got into the shower.

Serena left the bathroom to put her clothes back on that she wore yesterday. She went over to Darren's large mirror to look at herself. Then the thought hit her again standing in Darien's room which was larger than her own home back in Augustus really made her think how out of place she really felt and looked. What did Andrew see in a girl like her? Seeing Andrew's home she knew Andrew could have any girl he wanted. Serena had indeed her the stories of the women on campus who lusted after him which made her even more self-conscious.

Darien stepped out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waste. I see you're dressed and ready to go he said to her while walking towards in walk-in closet. Yes, I guess I am she responded. Serena was so lost in thought she didn't even realize she went to sit on Darien's bed. Darien came out of his closet in a business suit then he noticed Serena sitting on his bed with a sad expression on her face. What's wrong? He asked her. Serena looked up with a single tear in her eyes. Oh um, it's nothing I just you know kind of miss my family she lied quickly. I think I'll go visit them on break. I can understand your feelings why don't you go back sooner though Darien asked her. Well, I don't have the money and the only income I have is my job I have to work to keep my scholarship. But it barely gets me by because I still have to pay some of my tuition.

Darien sat there in his own thoughts he really felt bad for the young girl in front of him. Well are you ready I can go ahead and drop you off at school Darien finally spoke. Yes, I am thank you for speaking with me she said. No problem what are friends for he said. Darien led Serena to the elevators of the suite pressed the G button that went down to their garage and swiped his card. Their ride down on the elevator was quiet.

When they got into the car Darien decided to ask Serena some more questions about homework and school. So tell me about your family he asked. Well, there's my mom Salena my dad Salem, and my brother Sammie. Well somebody loves the letter S in your family Darien joked enticing a smile from Serena trying to cheer her up. Serena proceeded to tell Darien about her small town in her country where the population is no more than 300. Everyone there wasn't from money and everyone knew everyone else. She said her family were farmers and struggled most throughout her life and she dreams of making enough money to give them a better life. She told Darien about how she works in the school as a badge maker for the students it didn't pay much but she did send some of what was left over to her family to get by.

Darien didn't want to talk about his privileged life to Serena even though any other time he flaunted his wealth to others any other time but Serena wasn't like other people to him he wanted to keep her happy and protect her. Even though Serena wasn't like the girls he was used to taking that didn't matter to him. Instead, Darien spoke about his likes and dislikes his mom Kimberly his dad August, and his little sister Rei who was caring for one of his best friends Jed. Serena really enjoyed listening to Darien's stories.

Soon they arrived back at the dorms and Serena realized she didn't have her key card and ID to get into the dorm quarters. Darien the guards here are strict they won't let you pass the gate but you can drop me off right here I can walk to my dorm. As she was about to get out of the car Darien proceeded to drive towards the security gate. No Darien font cause unnecessary attention to yourself I promise this campus is super safe I can walk. Darien rolled his window down as a guard proceeded to his car window. Hello, I would need to see your school ID the guard started oh Darien it's you please proceed in and have a nice day on campus. Serena looked confused. Ok, what was that all about she asked him. Oh, nothing my dad does business here.

Serena and Darien got out of the car and walked towards her dorms. She was really impressed usually the guards over strict here. Serena got to her dorm but couldn't help but notice all the staring and pointing the students were doing. What is going on today she thought to herself. Soon she reached her room and she had to knock on the door because she didn't have her keys. The girls in the hallway kept waving at Darien and peeking at him from their rooms. Soon Darien noticed another blonde opening the door. She looked like she could be Serena's sister or cousin but Serena was more pretty to him. The girl's eyes went wide when she realized who was standing outside her door.

Oh my goodness Serena she said pulling the two into their room. Serena, you didn't tell me you knew Darien Shields too damn girl you really are popular huh. Darien Shields Serena turned around Darien Shields as in Shields University and Shields Inc. Serena asked. Yep the one and only. Serena sat there looking dumb and found now it all made sense the penthouse knowing Andrew the guards. She was looking at the son from one of the richest families in the world and she just told him her sob story. She felt even more sad and misplaced.

As Darien was leaving Mina ran to her roommate. Serena, you really need to start letting me tag along you know all the rich and fabulous I see Mina said with a smirk on her face. It wasn't even like that I went to visit Andrew he had to work I fell asleep at their penthouse and he drove me home. Mina looked at her friend you do know nobody out of their circle has ever seen their house. You really are lucky Serena. Serena and Mina sat talking about the Shields and Smiths family's luxurious life and friends for a while until Serena realized she had to get ready for work.

As Darien was walking back to his car he made a few phone calls. Yes hello, Mr Clark this is Darien Shields I have a few favors to ask you. After Darien hung up with Mr Clark she proceeded to make a few more phone calls in the same manner.

Serena left her room to go to work she took her time walking she couldn't believe it she knew not one billionaire but two and one of them happened to be her boyfriend. Not only that but she had to think about where would their relationship lead to and whether would he see her as more one day could she picture herself in that type of life she was really happy that Darien and Andrew didn't know the struggles her family had to go through. Serena finally made it to work when her boss called her to the office. Ms Heals can you please step into my office he asked.

Serena walked into her boss's office and sat down at the chair in front of his office so ms Serena I am afraid that I have to let you go this will be your last day here is your slip. Wait what what did I do Serena asked. This couldn't be happening to her. Her boss never answered her please Mr. Clark I have a family at home to think about but Mr Clark only spun around in his chair leaving her questions unanswered. Soon Serena was escorted out by the security. She was embarrassed and wanted to hide herself.

Serena walked back to her room with tears in her eyes she wanted to go back to bed. She didn't have classes until later in the afternoon today so she decided she would just sit in her room. When Serena was back in her room she was relieved to know that Mina was already gone, she didn't want to explain to Mina that her getting fired and not knowing why. All she knew was she would have to find another job to keep up her scholarship. This made her cry more. Serena then noticed the pictures on Mina's desk. Mina too looked like she came from a well-off family and that made her smile mina was truly a sweet person. Soon she drifted off to sleep.

Serena's phone began to ring waking her up it was Andrew. Hello, she spoke Serena I have great news, at least someone had great news she thought to herself. Yes, what is it she said getting him to continue on with his news. I just got a call to participate in the school administrator position in whaleview for a month. Can you believe it Serena my dreams are finally coming true oh my goodness Andrew that's so great to hear Serena was truly happy for Andrew So when do you leave she asked. This Friday. Friday? Serena asked but that's only three days away why such short notice? I'm not sure but I have to call Darien and my family to tell them the good news. Serena's day just felt like it was going from bad to worse. And to make it even worse he didn't even ask her about her day. Serena just shrugged it off and got ready for class.
