Notes: Okay... lets get this off my chest. Work has been... beyond stressful. working construction has great benefits, but sometimes you have projects that just kill you. this is one of them. absolute nightmare dealing with this one. And to top it off with me being out of state 2 weeks of the last month, I am actually shocked i was able to get two chapters out last month.
Hoping to increase work soon, but if i have to drop it to one chapter every two weeks for quality, i will do that. i love your support and don't want to give low quality stuff for you.
But now we are here so... Enjoy!
The room was dead silent as the police chief walked away, leaving only the newcomer staring at the teenagers. Both Midoriya and Todoroki were surprised to who it was, but that was nothing compared to the look of disbelief on both Tenya and Katara's faces. As if they had read each other, Todoroki and Midoriya quietly got up from their beds and made their way out of the room, giving the others the space they needed.
Katara's heart was pounding in her chest as she stared forward, unsure how to act now. Tenya swallowed the lump in his throat as he tried to take a step forward. "T-Tensei…"
The older brother was sitting in a hospital wheelchair, his body still wrapped up in several areas. The gown he wore was open in front, revealing the thick padding still on his stomach, along with several IV's still connected on his arms. His gaze was unchanged as he looked towards his younger sibling. Instead of talking, he pushed himself into the room right past them and looked out the window. The two teens sat perplexed as he remained silent, expecting something more than this from Tensei.
Shaking his head, Tenya ran up to his brother's side in excitement. "Tensei! I am so relieved to see you moving! I was worried that you-
"You idiot…"
Tenya's smile fell to the words he heard, watching as his brother turned towards him. Before he could even react, he buckled over from the hard punch landing straight into his stomach.
"Iida!" Katara yelled in shock as she watched Tenya stumble backwards. She looked back to Tensei, the elder sibling wincing in pain from the strain on his stomach. She would have run over to help, but the look of anger on Tensei's face kept her at bay.
"What the hell were you thinking?!" Tensei screamed out, his fists shaking in frustration. "You tried to take down the hero killer alone? What were you doing?!"
"I…" Tenya coughed, regaining his breath and looking away in shame. "I was angry. I had to do something for you, Tensei. If I didn't-
"You almost got yourself killed! And worse, you put Katara and your friends in danger too! I told you to stay away from that man!"
"I know my mistake, brother! I didn't mean for this to happen!" Tenya flinched as Tensei's arm reached for him once more and latched onto his arm. Tenya closed his eyes as he readied to receive another deserved strike… only to be pulled in tight to his brother's chest.
"You stupid…" Tensei gritted his teeth as he fought back tears. "Don't you ever scare me like that again."
Tenya's eyes immediately watered up to his brother's hug, now seeing how much of a fool he had been. He wrapped his own arms behind his sibling and returned the feeling, sniffling into Tensei's shoulder. "I'm sorry Tensei. I'm sorry for trying something so foolish!"
Katara couldn't help but smile in pure happiness at seeing them crying and embracing each other. The two siblings' hugging brought a wave of relief to her, witnessing them okay and together. As she watched them, however, a tightening pain began forming in her chest. She was happy seeing them like this, but the sight was bringing up memories of a certain sibling from her past, one who was always there to cheer her up and make her feel safe.
"Sokka…" She whispered out loud, suppressed feelings of loneliness resurfacing after all this time. Her arms came up and encircled herself, struggling to keep her own emotions in check as she turned to walk away. Katara sniffled to keep her tears from falling, even though it did nothing to stop them now.
"Where do you think you're going?"
Katara stopped walking to Tensei's words, turning to see him smiling at her. When he saw her face though, his smile dropped in concern. "Hey, what's wrong?" he asked.
"Sorry, I just…" Katara fake chuckled and wiped her eyes. "I am just happy you are okay."
While he could sense that was true, Tensei could tell that wasn't the reason for her emotions. He held an arm out, offering her to join their group. "Come here, you need one of these."
The offer was one she would not pass up, walking over and latching onto him, placing her chin on his shoulder. The moment his arm pulled her in, Katara couldn't contain it any longer, tears pouring down her face as she soaked in the love that she needed so much. Tensei let her cry for several moments before he sighed. "Now the truth to why you are upset."
"I'm not upset. It's…" She clenched her eyes closed and, gasping to control her breathing, imagined her old brother once more. "Seeing you two like that made me so happy. But… it made me think of… my brother… back home."
Tenya and Tensei's eyes widened to her words. For Tenya, he had just found out that Katara was a stranger to this place, having been forced to lose everything and everyone she cared for. And for Tensei, it had been so long since he heard her mention her family to him, possibly trying to move on with her life. But he knew far too well how strong family was, and moving on was never so simple.
Tensei patted her back, letting her emotions flow free. "I am sorry, Katara. I truly am. I know how much you love him."
Katara held onto Tensei tighter, burying her face into his shoulder as she thought of the family she was probably never seeing again. "I miss him. I… it's been so long since him and everyone else. I miss them so much!"
The sound of her cries sent a wave of pain through Tenya's heart. Now he understood why she was so secretive of where she came from, having had to bottle within herself all these emotions for so long. Now that they had broken free, the only thing now was to let them pour out. "I am sorry. I… I am, Katara. I couldn't imagine how hard this has been… since you came here. But I will help you however I can."
Tensei's mouth dropped in surprise to his brother's words, knowing exactly what Tenya meant. Tensei didn't say anything, however. Instead, he sighed in relief, knowing that Katara herself came clean about her past. He turned back and squeezed the crying teen tighter. "I know it's hard, but I will be there to help you as much as I can."
Katara gave a quick chuckle as she leaned back to look at both of them. "You already did. I was alone and… you took me in. You've treated me so well, and I can never be thankful enough to how you have accepted me in your life. I… I am happy to be here with you."
Leaning in once again, Katara hugged both brothers in a powerful embrace. She cried once more, but in comfort, as she felt them hug her in return. She may have lost the family she once knew, but it seemed there were new people to help fill that void inside her heart.
Standing outside the room, both Todoroki and Midoriya couldn't help but stare to the ground as they overheard the discussion in the room. The pain Katara was feeling was one they couldn't imagine dealing with, showing how strong she really was to push herself through it all. They also smiled when they heard those final words, knowing she was with people who cared for her. Not only that, they both wanted to make sure she was not alone either, to be there to help her as well.
"It's pretty crazy, huh…" Midoriya shifted against the wall as he looked over to Shoto. "All of this is pretty crazy."
"Yeah…" Shoto looked down to his left hand and sighed. "I would have never guessed that was where she came from."
Midoriya chuckled and rubbed his head. "So, I guess we have a big secret to keep now."
"I know. But after everything she has done for us, we should make sure we keep to our word. She helped us, now we need to help her."
"Right!" Midoriya nodded in agreement, leaning back against the wall and smiling. The sudden growling in his stomach made him grunt in amusement. "Now that I've calmed down, I could go for something to eat. I'm gonna see if I can ask the nurses for anything."
Shoto nodded to him. "Alright. I'll wait here and see if they need anything."
Walking away, Midoriya chuckled in amusement to himself. "Wow, Todoroki has changed a lot. Before, he would have just left on his own whenever." He pulled his phone out of his pocket to look at the time, but was shocked by what he saw. "Woah…"
His phone was on silent, so he never knew that it was flooded with messages from his classmates. Some were from last night, people confused to his alert, and then there were others this morning, asking about the news that broke in Hosu. "I guess my message would confuse all of them." He said with a frown. Suddenly, his phone started ringing, causing his eyes to widen slightly. "Y-Yaoyorozu?" He said reading the ID.
He answered the phone and brought it up. "Hel-
"Midoriya!" Momo's voice yelled through the phone. "There you are. I've been trying to get a hold of you! After you sent your location last night, I saw there was an attack in Hosu!"
Midoriya could hear the panic in her voice, causing him to blush slightly. "S-sorry! I didn't know my phone was on silent. I didn't see anything until just now."
"What happened though? After I got just your location, I messaged you to figure out what you meant. Then I saw the attack in Hosu on the news. The hero killer was there too!"
"Yeah… we ran into him and-
"WHAT?!" Her scream caused Midoriya's head to ring slightly. "You got attacked?! Are you okay?!"
"I'm alright, d-don't worry!" Midoriya answered. "W-we ran into him when-
He then remembered the deal they made with the chief, taking a breath to think of what to say. "I was there when the attack happened and Iida had been attacked by him. When I went to help Iida, I sent that for anyone nearby who could help. L-luckily, Katara and Todoroki were nearby too… and Endeavor captured the hero killer."
"All of you were there? Did anyone get hurt?"
"W-well, we got a few cuts, but nothing really bad. We all made it out okay!" Midoriya grinned to himself, trying to make it sound as positive as possible.
The phone was silent for a moment before he heard Momo sigh in relief. "Wow… I can't believe that happened. I had no idea you went through that. I was getting worried and… well, I'm really glad you are okay."
"Thanks. It was pretty crazy, but it's all over now. We are at the hospital now and-
"The hospital? I'm sorry for bothering you, you should be resting!"
"N-no no, it's fine! They are j-just keeping us the rest of the day for a few more checkups." Midoriya swallowed the lump in his throat and felt himself sweating suddenly. "I-if you want, w-we can talk more later… t-tonight."
"Of course! I want to make sure you are alright! And I definitely want to hear what happened." Momo said enthusiastically. "Well… I'll let you go now to get better, but give me a call later when you are free, okay?"
"Y-yeah, n-no problem!" Midoriya shakily answered.
"Okay, sounds good! Rest up, Midoriya. Goodbye."
"Y-yeah, thanks for calling. Bye."
Hearing the click, Midoriya's hand shook as he realized what had just transpired.
"Holy crap… I just talked to a girl on the phone… and she wants me to call her back!"
His heart was actually beating faster now than when he had faced the hero killer in the night before. "High school has been so crazy so far!"
Momo set her phone down and sighed in relief at hearing that Midoriya was okay. After she saw the news about what was happening, her mind began playing the worst scenarios to what could have happened. But now that he was at the hospital and seemed fine, her nerves could finally relax.
"I hope I didn't sound too crazy there," She blushed as she thought back to how she reacted on the phone. "I mean, he was in a dangerous zone and wasn't answering his phone! A-any friend would think like that!"
She shook her head clear and stood back up to finish adjusting her hero costume on. Once she was finished, she made her way out of the room she was given and down the hall towards the training dojo. Before she entered the room, however, she clenched her hand and took a deep breath, readying herself. "I can do this…" She whispered to herself, reaching down and sliding the door open.
She made her way into the large room, keeping her eyes sharp for any movement. She walked further inside, shifting slowly with every step as she looked back and forth around her. "Nothing to the left or right, or behind…" Momo whispered as she spun around, her quirk activating in her hand. "That means…"
Her eyes shot towards the ceiling just as her arms raised and pointed her capture net gun up. "Above!"
The net exploded up straight towards Edgeshot dropping down, the pro hero slashing up the rope and landing on the ground.
"Quick observation. Good." He chuckled in amusement and leaped towards her. Momo jumped back, evading his attack as her forearm glowed, coming up with a steel gauntlet and blocking his sword with it. "Smaller, but still effective defense, good." Edgeshot said, seeing how fast she had made it compared to the shield.
Momo smiled internally to the compliment, immediately creating a chain from her free hand and swinging it at his legs to trap them. Before it could connect, the pro hopped quickly and evaded it as well, spinning in the air and whipping his leg down towards the teen. Momo barely evaded it fast enough just as his sword came to the side once again, the blade cracking against her gauntlet and shoving her back. She gritted her teeth and was soon back up, trying to give herself space, but Edgeshot was having none of it.
"An opponent won't give you time to create anything!" He shouted and rushed at her once more, pushing Momo to see how she would react. To his surprise, she didn't panic this time, instead chucking at him something small from her hand. He eyed it curiously as he realized what it was, slashing at it in disappointment. "A matryoshka doll? You need to be better than-
BOOM!
The bright flash, in the moment he made connection, caused his vision to go white, dropping back as his eyes burned. The pro clenched his eyes shut, the bright spots causing his head to spin. "A flash bang inside?"
"Now's my chance!" Momo hissed out and charged once more. Her hands came together and created another chain with a grappling hook on the end, spinning it around and launching it right at her opponent. His eyes were still closed, unable to see the incoming attack. She was finally going to get a hit in!
…
And the pro casually dodged it without looking, his sword coming up, wrapping itself around the end and yanking it forward. The force of the tug caused her to yelp out as she was pulled towards him, letting go and stumbling to her feet. "But… he can't see it!" She gasped out in shock as the hero walked towards her, eyes closed and weapon ready.
"Taking out an opponent's vision. Very wise." Edgeshot responded, tilting his head slightly down with his ear facing her. "But there are other senses to worry about."
Momo's eyes widened in surprise as the hero rushed at her again. She created a steel pole and blocked his sword before he dropped down and swept her legs out. She fell hard onto her butt, throwing the pole at him, only to watch it knocked away and the blade pointed only inches from her face… just like every other engagement since she had arrived. "Damn it…" She huffed out in annoyance.
Edgeshot gave a small chuckle to her words, standing straight and sheathing his sword. "Don't be too disappointed. You still got a hit on me." He laughed as he rubbed his eyes several times, opening up and still seeing spots for a moment.
Momo blushed and rubbed her arm. "Sorry about that."
"Don't be. That was actually a very smart move." he groaned as he blinked hard a few more times before his vision focused. "What made you think of that?"
"You told me to be creative, so I was hoping to surprise you there." Momo crawled off the ground and straightened her outfit, frowning to herself. "You still took me down when you couldn't even see."
Edgeshot pointed to his ears. "That is the result of years of training blindfolded. My ears are far more sensitive than the average person, so don't be too hard on yourself. You actually have surprised me how much you have improved in just a few days."
Momo smiled to his compliment. For several hours a day, before they went on patrols, Edgeshot made her engage in duels with himself, testing her reactions and resourcefulness. The first day she could barely last a few strikes before she was down, her panic only letting her create the most basic of constructs. Within only one day, she was already seeing a major improvement in her reaction time, and by today her ability to add versatility was increasing as well. From sneak attacks to frontal attacks, it was all making her adapt and get stronger.
She clasped her hands and gave a bow to her mentor. "Thank you, sir. I really appreciate the time you have given for me."
He nodded in response. "Of course. It pains me to see so much talent not used to its potential, sometimes it just needs a little push."
"I'll make sure I remember your teachings." She said with a smile.
The pro hero smiled underneath his mask and bowed. "I should thank you. You have been a great student for me to teach. I had only hoped some of your patience could have rubbed off on your classmate."
"AHHHHHHHHHH!"
Both of them groaned in annoyance to the scream, looking back to see Bakugo crouched in the corner of the room, viciously scrubbing the floor mat with a wash brush.
"DIE, YOU DAMN SWEAT STAINS!" Bakugo screamed out in rage.
Momo glared at her classmate, still confused about why Edgeshot ever chose him to come here. Unlike training with her, he would have Bakugo continue doing minimal tasks, like cleaning or fetching errands. Every time, it seemed the pro was giving Bakugo just the right amount of tasks that took the entire training time for him to finish, leaving no time to spar before they went on their daily patrols. She almost felt bad he was stuck doing things like that.
Almost.
Edgeshot himself sighed, having a hard time getting through to Bakugo. He could tell that in raw talent, the explosion teen was a prodigy compared to most kids. He was already gifted with a powerful quirk. And on top of that, his fighting and reflexes were top notch. What disappointed the pro, however, was this kid's temperament, lashing out at the smallest thing and having very little patience for anything. He was giving these tasks as a way for Bakugo to push through things he wouldn't enjoy and realize the benefit that would come after. If he wanted to train, he had to focus and push through his list of chores even though he hated it.
'He has complained more than working,' Edgeshot shook his head and walked towards the cleaning teen. 'His habit of confrontation distracts him from working. If he focused, he could finish in time and-
The ninja hero raised his eyebrow in surprise when he noticed that Bakugo was actually on the last mat, finishing up wiping it down and drying it off. "He actually finished today… hmm." Edgeshot hummed in amusement and crossed his arms behind his back. "Bakugo."
"Huh?" Katsuki grunted and glared towards the pro. "What do you need done now?"
"Step to the center of the mat. I have a training exercise for you."
The grin on Bakugo's face couldn't have been any bigger, the excitement in his gut burning. "Finally…"
Edgeshot turned and walked back towards the center of the room, signaling Momo to take a seat to the side and observe. The pro hero spun and faced the approaching teen, noticing him already cracking his knuckles. 'He really is ready to fight anyone…' Edgeshot whispered internally in surprise, not sensing any hesitation from the explosion teen.
"I've been waiting for this now. Let's get this going." Bakugo snickered, ready to do something different than cleaning.
"So, you are ready to head straight into a battle. Brave… but risky." Edgeshot slipped two kunai out of his belt and threw them behind, both piercing the ground ten meters away. "This is a simple exercise. You are facing me, a villain on the streets. You either engage me in a one on one fight… or you reach safety by crossing that line where your allies can come and assist you."
Momo tilted her head in surprise, never doing this type of training with him yet. She didn't have time to ask what was the lesson before Bakugo burst forward straight at Edgeshot.
"Die!" Bakugo's hand erupted in a strong blast at the hero's chest, only for Edgeshot to dodge and suddenly bring up his leg straight into Bakugo's stomach, forcing a hoarse gasp from the explosion teen. Even Momo gasped from the sudden hit, not expecting their mentor to throw that much power into a strike.
"An opponent who is stronger and faster than you, what do you do?" Edgeshot yelled out as he watched Bakugo slump off his leg, but was surprised as the teen's hands erupted towards him again.
"You attack until they are down!" Bakugo growled out, his palms erupting out a stream of explosions enveloping the pro hero. Edgeshot jumped back through the smoke and threw several shuriken down towards him, Bakugo leaping to the side before charging the pro once again. "Get back here!" he roared out and extended his glowing palm forward again.
Edgeshot spun midair, evading the blast before clutching Bakugo's throat and slamming him back into the ground, pinning the teen's arms with his feet. Bakugo coughed hard from his windpipe being squeezed, but continued glaring up to the man on top of him. "G-get off of me!" he yelled out and spun his hands up slightly, emitting another round of blasts and forcing Edgeshot off.
"You have guts, but what will you do when that doesn't work?!" Edgeshot pulled out several knives and launched them forward, forcing Bakugo to leap out of the way. He continued throwing more, pushing Bakugo around the room and leading him towards the makeshift line, waiting to see what he chose. "Will you fight in vain knowing it's a situation you can't win?!"
Bakugo growled and glared up at the ninja. "You never know until it is over!" He burst to attack again, bringing his hand back and charging another blast. "I don't care who I'm up against! I'll take you down!"
Edgeshot glared in disappointment to the teen's choice, too focused on trying to win, rather than choose the logical option for his level. He readied his sword, watching Bakugo coming closer. Just before the pro could strike, however, he was surprised when Bakugo sent a blast before he got near, shielding himself from the line of sight. The pro watched cautiously as the smoke enveloped himself and cut off all sight, only able to dodge Bakugo flying in from the side due to his hearing.
'Using a smokescreen to help block his movements. Not bad…' Edgeshot pondered before reaching through and grabbing the teen by the wrist and slamming him into the ground. He flipped in the air and landed onto Bakugo's back, pinning both of his hands down onto the mat. "However… you should have used that moment as your chance to seek aid."
Bakugo growled out as he struggled to move, unable to move his hands up from the ground. "So, you are saying I should have given up? Turn tail and run?!" he spat out in fury, earning a glare from the pro on top of him.
"Your mind is too focused on fighting instead of the big picture. Your talent is exceptional, but you refuse to accept there are obstacles you can't overcome on your own. Your intent to win is why you failed to see you stepped out of line during the festival."
The vein on Bakugo's forehead pulsed to hearing that again. "A fight isn't called by a line on the ground. A villain doesn't care about things like that, and I know they wouldn't just let you run for help without attacking you from behind!"
Edgeshot's eyes widened slightly from the statement, surprised by the accurate answer. 'Did he know I would have chased him down if he ran to the line?' His thoughts were cut off as he noticed Bakugo's hands glowing brighter.
"And I don't believe in turning your back to a fight!"
BOOOM!
The sudden explosion forced Edgeshot to activate his quirk, his body thinning and shooting through the air like a ribbon before connecting once more away. "He destroyed the ground beneath himself to get free…" He mumbled out in both shock and amazement to this kid's determination, watching as the ash covered Bakugo, who stood up from the small crater.
Bakugo huffed out several times before he looked back towards the pro, his focus unchanged. "Running away from a fight… is not what All Might would do. A real hero… would fight until their last breath no matter what the odds are! Giving up is something I will never do!"
The room fell silent to his words, both Momo and Edgeshot shocked by what he said. The creationist stared in surprise at her classmate, completely caught off guard by the determined words he had just said. She couldn't help but feel a similar drive from someone she had grown close to, despite his personality being so dissimilar to that person.
"Midoriya…" she whispered.
Edgeshot remained silent as the furious teen stared at him. He closed his eyes and crossed his arms. "Both of you meet me outside; I have something important for both of you to do now."
The two teens sat still for a moment before they both followed his orders, getting up and walking towards the exit door (not before they cast another glare at each other.)
Once he was alone, Edgeshot looked back to the damaged floor, not caring about the cost to fix it, but to what caused it. "He risked injuring himself to break free of my hold. Extremely risky."
He couldn't help but chuckle to himself thinking more about it. "Him refusing to accept defeat… I don't think I have ever seen determination like that in anyone since Mirko."
He turned and walked towards the door, unable to stop thinking of that crazed rabbit hero. "You may become something great, Bakugo."
As the sun was getting close to setting that day, both Katara and Shoto were checked out of the hospital. Due to Midoriya and Tenya's injuries being slightly worse, they were told to stay one more night just as a precaution. After finishing changing back into their outfits, the pair came back for one last goodbye.
"Well, it seems this is goodbye again." Katara said to both of them, earning a smile from each.
"Yeah, maybe it won't be as hectic meeting up like last night." Midoriya joked, earning a laugh from the waterbender.
"Well, that depends, are you going out hunting criminals again?" She fake glared at Tenya, the teen rolling his eyes.
"I think I have had my fill of villains for a few days." he responded.
"It would be unwise to fight a villain within the next few days since you are still recovering." Shoto added, his face completely serious.
Katara raised her eyebrow at Shoto, realizing he didn't catch the sarcasm. "I don't think he will be fighting anyone right now."
Shoto then noticed the stares he gathered from the other two, a slight blush on his face when he realized it was a joke. "Oh…"
Shaking her head, Katara smiled and patted his shoulder. "Don't worry about it." She turned back to the others and nodded. "I guess this is goodbye until class next week."
"Indeed. Now I can make up to Manual for the trouble I caused him…" Tenya clenched his fist and looked up. "It's time I become the hero I am supposed to be."
Katara could see the change in Tenya's eyes, the hatred he had been carrying before was gone now. She felt relieved seeing he was able to move past his emotions. "I know you will. You will do great."
Shoto felt his phone vibrate in his pocket, looking at the screen and letting out a small sigh. "They're here."
Seeing it was time to go, Katara huffed out and smiled one last time. "Well, looks like we are going now. You both stay safe, alright?"
"You too!" Midoriya beamed a large smile in return.
Shoto gave a small nod to the pair before turning and leading Katara out of the room. Before she exited, she turned back and stared at Tenya for a moment, her chest swelling up slightly. "Thank you…" She whispered.
Tenya smiled in return, looking back down to his lap. "I am the one who should thank you."
And with that, Katara felt her smile grow even wider, running down the hall and catching up Shoto. As they made their way through the hospital, the fire and ice wielder noticed the positive look on his companion's face. "You seem to be doing better now." he stated.
Katara took a breath as she thought over everything that had happened in the last day. "It's just… so much has happened and it's hard to believe how everything has turned out."
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"Well, I was so worried that Iida was going to do something that would get himself hurt, and we ended up fighting the hero killer together. And then… I finally told you all who I really was… and you are all okay with that."
Shoto stared at her for a few seconds before turning back forward. "It was a surprise learning that, but you have done more than enough to earn my trust."
Katara could only smile, happy to see she had people who could trust her no matter where she came from. "Thanks."
As they approached the hospital exit, Shoto glared as he looked out to the figures waiting for them. "Your secret is safe with me as well."
At first, she was confused by his sudden change of demeanor, then Katara looked through the sliding glass doors and frowned when she saw Endeavor standing outside. The flame hero had on his usual scowl, while Burnin to his side only smirked as they came out.
"Well, look what the cat dragged out here." Burnin snickered and gripped her hips. "You two look like you had it rough."
"We are fine, actually." Katara shot back as they approached, only making Burnin laugh.
"But looking like that? I'd hate to see you on a bad day!"
Grunting, Katara couldn't help but look down at her robes and see the multiple rips and slashes over her clothes. She'd have to ask the school when they could repair this. Shoto, however, only stared up at his father, the two not breaking eye contact. "You did something very stupid back there." Endeavor growled out. "You disobeyed my orders and went off on your own."
Shoto looked to the side and slipped his hands in his pockets. "We did what we had to do." he retorted.
Gritting his teeth, the flame hero swallowed his words instead of arguing. While he was grateful his son was not seriously hurt, he couldn't get over the fact he now had to take credit for an action he did not do. While he wanted notoriety, getting it through actions that were not his own felt unearned and worthless. He took a breath composing himself and turned away.
"I have to meet with the police chief to go over the details of last night's events. Burnin will escort you both back to the agency." He stated before walking down the road. "I'll speak to you more when I get back."
"Escort? We don't need a babysitter." Katara crossed her arms in annoyance.
"After you both took off last night, yes, you do." Endeavor scoffed, but halted his steps and looked back to the waterbender and his kid. "Anyway… you both… did a good job."
The trio standing there all felt their mouths drop in surprise as Endeavor walked on, the compliment shocking all of them.
"Did he just…" Katara stuttered out in amazement.
"He did…" Shoto confirmed, unable to truly comprehend what he heard.
"Holy shit... Endeavor complimented you, kid?" Burnin looked over at Katara and burst out laughing in amazement. "Well, hell just froze over! That's something I never expected, haha!" The sidekick moved between the two teens, threw her arms over their shoulders and yanked them towards her. "Alright, you twerps, I'll treat you both to a bite to eat!"
"What?" Katara grunted as she freed herself from the woman's grip. "For what?"
Burnin let go of the annoyed Shoto and walked down the road grinning. "Come on, get your asses moving!"
The two teens looked at each other in confusion and followed her on the sidewalk. "You are treating us because…?" Shoto gave her a questioning look
Spinning around to face them, Burnin had a mischievous look in her eyes. "Uh, because you two are going to tell me how you took out the hero killer, that's why!"
Both Katara and Shoto were shocked by her statement, especially after what the chief had said. "But we didn't. My father is the one who captured him." Shoto answered, feeling his stomach churn having to say that lie.
Burnin rolled her eyes. "Please, I've worked long enough with that guy, I can tell when he's full of it. When he came in and announced that to us, he looked so annoyed I thought that man was going to shit a diamond for a moment."
Katara felt like trying to say something else, but from the grin on Burnin's face, she knew arguing would be pointless. She sighed and rubbed her arm. "We aren't supposed to talk about it."
"To the media, yea. And your friends, for sure. But I am neither!" Burnin snickered and turned back forward. "As your superior, I demand every dirty detail of what you did because that is badass!"
"You aren't going to scold us for what we did?" Shoto asked questioningly.
"Oh please, if every hero got punished for doing something stupid, half of the top ten would be kicked out. And don't worry, the others back at work bought his story, so I'll keep your precious little secret between us." Burnin snickered as they walked on, leaving the two teens in silent surprise once more.
As they continued walking for fifteen more minutes or so, Katara noticed Shoto rubbing his shoulder, where he had gotten injured the night before. "Is it still bothering you?" She asked in concern.
"It's fine. Just a little sore, that's all." He answered, then grunted as he stretched it out.
"I can try to heal it more tonight once we get back." She offered, earning a small nod from the other.
"Sure, that would be nice."
Smiling, Katara looked back forward as the trio came to a crosswalk, waiting for the light to change. Looking ahead, she noticed the many signs for places to eat, causing her stomach to suddenly growl. She blushed as the other two looked at her. "I didn't really eat much at the hospital." She mumbled out.
Burnin laughed and rubbed her chin. "Sounds like it's time to feed the beast. Don't worry, this place is pretty damn good. It's funny though, the first time I came here, I was a bit surprised when I went in since the staff are all-
POOF!
A loud pop rang through the air causing the group to jump in shock. They turned and saw a large green truck swerving in the road, its front right tire having a blowout and forcing it towards the side of the street. Suddenly, another smaller car was trying to rush by, but it was too late as the truck veered and slammed hard into the left side of it and crashing it into another parked car.
"Oh shit!" Burnin yelled out in shock, while Katara's hands covered her mouth in fear.
"They could have been hurt!" she screamed.
"Come on!" Burnin ordered as she sprinted across the road with the other two close behind. "I got the truck. You two check on the front car!"
"On it!" Shoto answered and looked over to Katara, the waterbender nodding and running with him towards the crushed red sedan.
As Burnin ran around the truck to the driver's side, she saw the door already opening up and a middle-aged man stumbling out. She caught the man before he collapsed. "Hey, easy now!" she yelled in concern.
"I-I'm sorry!" The man stuttered in fear, rubbing the blood on his forehead. "The tire blew and I lost control!"
"It's alright, don't worry." Burnin helped set the man onto the ground. "I need to see the others now."
"Go, please help them!" he shouted after the sprinting woman.
Meanwhile, the two teens were struggling to open the doors of the smaller car, the damage from the crash smashing both sides in. Katara was on the left, yanking at the handle, trying to make it budge. "This thing is stuck!" She screamed in frustration, looking through the window to see a blonde woman in pain. "I'll get you out, don't worry!"
Shoto on the other side grabbed the handle and yanked, gritting his teeth and pulling until it popped open. He looked inside and found a brown-haired man wiping the blood from his cheek. "Here, let me help!" Shoto said as he grabbed the man by the arm and pulled him out.
The man stumbled for a minute, shaking his head before his eyes widened in fear. "Please, you need to help my wife!"
"Don't worry, we will get her out. She will-
"No, we have to get her to the hospital! It's time!"
What?" Shoto was confused to what he was talking about, looking back into the car before his eyes shot open. "Oh god…"
Katara yanked several more times with no avail, the left side of the car too crushed to wedge open. Glaring, she opened her canteen and bended water into the seams of the door, filling it all around the hinges and freezing it instantly. The sudden increase in pressure cracked the bearings, forcing the front of the door to fall to the side. Grabbing the loose section, Katara yanked it back and broke the rest off, looking inside to see the woman's face crying in pain, but it wasn't the injuries that made Katara's heart jump.
She was pregnant.
"Th-The baby… it's coming!" the blonde screamed out, her right hand clutching her stomach in agony.
"Oh no…" Katara whispered in fear just as Burnin approached.
"You get them out yet?!" She asked before her eyes shot open to the woman in the car. "Oh shit! Let's pull her out!"
"Here, come on!" Katara reached in with Burnin to help pull her out, spinning her so her legs were outside of the car. They began to pull, but as they shifted her the woman screamed in pain.
"My arm!"
"What?" Burnin looked over and gasped, seeing the woman's left arm pinned between the seat and the crushed car frame. "Damn it, she's stuck! I can't get it free!"
"We have to, the baby is coming!" Katara shouted.
"WHAT?!" Burnin looked down to the woman below her, sweat already forming on the blondes brow. "J-just hold it okay?! We will get the doctors here!"
"We left forty minutes ago. It's coming now!" the husband yelled in fear, running up to his wife's side.
As the nearby crowds gathered in fear, Burnin gripped her head in frustration, keeping everyone back and clicking on her earpiece. "This is Burnin from the Endeavor Agency! We need an ambulance and fire department! Pregnant woman trapped! Repeat, pregnant woman trapped! Need immediate aid!"
Shoto tried pulling on the dented steel to no avail, letting go and clenching his fist in anger."I can't use my quirk to break her free, I could injure her." he grunted.
"We don't have time for that!" Katara looked back to the woman hyperventilating, knowing exactly what she had to do. "Watch out, I can help her!"
"What?" The husband looked down in shock as the teen knelt on the ground between his wife's legs. "What are you doing?!"
"I have to see how far she is. It may be too late to wait for help." Katara answered.
"What?! You're just a kid!" He shouted out.
"Trust me, I know what I'm doing." Katara looked up at panicking husband, her gaze filled with a hardened focus that made him freeze.
"I…" He swallowed the lump in his throat and nodded.
Katara nodded in return and then turned back to the woman, putting her hands on her trembling knees. "It's okay, I'll help you, alright?" She said trying to calm the scared mother to be. Spreading the womans legs, Katara lifted up the dress she was wearing to get a better view. As she did this, Shoto watched her in shock and amazement.
"Katara, do you know what-
"Todoroki, I need clean towels and more water. Hurry!" She yelled not even looking up to him. His mouth fell open in surprise, but for some reason he didn't question it, trusting her call and running through the crowd into any nearby store for what she asked.
As she finished contacting the medical team, Burnin turned back and gasped when she saw the teen down between the woman's legs. "Woah! Hey kid, what so you think you are doing?!"
"She's already dilated! This baby is coming now!" Katara shouted back.
"The hell you talking about?! You don't know what you're doing! Get back and wait for the doctors!"
"I've delivered a baby before, and I need your help with this!" Katara yelled as she lifted up the dress a little more.
"You what?! I said for you to get back and to- OH, GOOD GOD!" Burnin gagged as she caught sight below the dress, turning away and covering her mouth.
"Burnin, I need your help! come on!" Katara glared at the crouched over sidekick.
"Huurrrrg!" Burnin huffed out catching her breath and gritting her teeth. "I'm a hero, not a doctor, kid! I can't do-
"BURNIN!"
Burnin jumped slightly from the sharp tone in Katara's voice, looking back to the gasping woman before frowning. "Grrr… fine!" she snapped and stomped back over, making sure she kept her eyes just above the dress opening.
A few moments later, Shoto returned with several towels and a bucket of water. "Here, this is all I could find." He said as he knelt by their side.
Katara nodded up to him. "thank you." she looked back to the woman and smiled. "It's okay, we are gonna get through this. I need you to breathe in and out for me, alright?"
At first the panicked woman was hesitant listening to this girl, but she sensed this girl knew what she was doing and nodded in agreement. "O-Okay…"
"Good, now breathe in and out like this." Katara demonstrated the pattern, letting the woman follow along until she did it on her own. "Good, good." She then heard the same breathing to her right, glaring as she saw Burnin doing the same thing.
"Hee-Hee-Hooo. Hee-Hee-Hoo. I think I'm gonna be sick!" Burnin gagged again, covering her mouth.
"Hey! Focus!" Katara snapped.
"Sorry…" Burnin took a deep breath to calm herself.
Rolling her eyes, Katara looked back up to the woman. "Okay, when you feel something coming, tell me how-
"It's coming now!" The blonde shouted out and scrunched her face up. "It's coming now!"
"Alright, alright!" Katara reached down and soaked on of the towels in water and handed it to Burnin. "Here, I need you to help with keeping her clean."
"Oh come on…really?" Burnin felt her cheeks swelling at the thought of what may come, limply grabbing the wet towel from Katara.
Katara grabbed her own towel and looked back up. "Now, when you feel it coming, push!"
"It's coming!" the woman cried.
"Okay, push!"
"AHHH!"
The loud screams of the woman rang out in the street, the crowd gasping in fear. Shoto gritted his teeth, looking away as the cries continued. "You got it, keep going!" Katara demanded, her hands underneath the dress.
Burnin clenched her eyes shut in horror to the situation, trying to keep her stomach down as her mind played images over and over. Another ear piercing scream rang in the air, forcing her eyes open for a moment and letting her catch a glimpse past Katara's hands. "HOLY MOTHER OF- HUUUURRG!"
The pro sidekick gagged and turned green, turning away and using her towel to cover her mouth. Katara rolled her eyes and kept her focus in front of her. "One more time, PUSH!"
A final powerful scream echoed in the street, followed by an eerie silence that hung over the area. The crowd held their breath in worry, waiting for anyone to say anything. Worried eyes looked back and forth among the spectators, concern growing as nothing was heard for several more seconds. Some of the crowd was ready to run forward and check on the situation.
But suddenly, a light cry was heard from the car.
The exhausted woman panted as she laid in the car, struggling to catch her breath. She forced her tired eyes open to see Katara pull a red stained towel from her dress, a constant cry coming from the rags and a large smile on the waterbenders face.
"It's a girl." Katara said as she held her hands out, guiding the child into the free arm of the mother. Shoto was in pure disbelief as he watched his classmate cradle the child, guiding it down to the woman's arms as if she had done it so many times in her lifetime. It was second nature to her.
"Oh my god…" the teary eyed woman stared in awe to the newborn in her arm, unable to keep herself from crying in happiness. "She's beautiful.
Katara smiled and stood back looking over to the teary eyed husband staring at her. His jaw trembled in relief, a laugh of joy escaping his throat, dropping down to his wife's side. Both parents clutching each other in happiness their child was safe. The woman's drenched eyes looked up to the waterbender, unable to hide the gratitude she felt. "Thank you…. Thank you." she muttered out.
Suddenly, the entire crowd watching burst into loud cheers, whistles and cries of excitement running through everyone to what had just happened. The people all came forward, screaming and praising Katara for the amazing act she had just pulled off. Some of the woman cried and whistled for her bravery, while the men all cheered and hollered in applause. It was so shocking at first, but Katara couldn't help but feel amazing at this point.
Through all of the bustling crowds, Shoto couldn't take his eyes off his friend at this point. After everything he saw she was capable of, from her bending to whatever talents she had, this was perhaps the greatest thing he had ever seen her do. She had taken control of a situation that no one could of expected, keeping her composure and helped bring a life into this world. He had been impressed with who she was before, but he really had no idea what she was capable of.
A smile spread across his face as she smiled back to everyone around her. "There really is nothing you cannot do." he whispered to himself.
While everyone was so busy celebrating the moment, Burnin laid on the ground staring up at the orange sky, never again able to rid that image from her head. "Fuck having kids..."
After getting back to the agency and cleaning off, Katara sighed as she came out of the bathroom in fresh matching blue shorts and shirt. With her hair free from its braid, Katara felt at ease, exiting her room and walking to one of the common areas she was shown prior. After everything that had happened, she needed a moment to just enjoy peace and quiet. She rubbed her neck as she walked down the empty hallway, reaching the furnished room and looking up in surprise someone else was already there. "Oh, hey." She said out loud catching his attention.
Shoto was sitting on the couch, changed into a white shirt and black pants as well. "Hey Katara…." he answered. "What are you doing here?"
She gave a small shrug. "Just needed a little quiet time. After everything today I could go for that."
"You didn't want to be in your room?" He questioned, earning a frown from her.
"Burnin is… not the most quiet person sometimes."
He grunted in agreement. "Well, if you want to be alone, I can give you space and-
"No no, you're fine." She waved her hand and smiled, walking up and taking a seat next to him on the couch. "What are you doing out here?"
"Just had a little food after getting back since we never got food out." He gestured to the tray of rice balls on the coffee table in front of him. "You want some?"
"I will take you up on that." Katara chuckled and snatched one, taking several large bites before sighing in relief. "That's better."
"We didn't eat because of the accident, but I wasn't hungry for a while after that."
"Yeah, me neither," Katara rubbed her head and giggled. "I was a little distracted."
"You were incredible out there," Shoto shook his head in disbelief, still going over what happened. "How did you know exactly what to do?"
"Well, I've… done it before so kinda just," Katara gave a small shrug. "You know, did it."
"You help save that woman and her baby. That was amazing."
Katara blushed slightly and smiled. "Thanks, although I probably should have just had you help me since Burnin was more freaked out than the mom."
Shoto smirked at her joke and grabbed another for himself. Before he took a bite, he watched as she reached for another, noticing the burn on her left arm he gave her. The sight would always cause his heart to ache. "Sorry…" he whispered.
"What?" She saw the pained look on his face, his eyes locked onto her arm and causing her to frown. "Hey, it's okay. Don't beat yourself up about that."
Shoto sighed before looking away. "Even after I treated you poorly, and even hurt you during the festival, you still helped me. Me, Midoriya, Yaoyorozu, Iida. Even today, you are always helping people not because you have to, but because you want to."
Katara couldn't help but stare at his word choice, a large smile spreading across her face. "Wow, where did this guy come from? He's so nice."
"What?" Shoto looked at her in confusion. "I am just speaking the truth."
"Aw that's so sweet." She laughed and gave him a play shove, earning a small grunt from him. The two ate for a few more minutes until the plate was gone, exhaling in satisfaction. "Wow, now I feel much better."
As she laid back against the couch however, a sudden wave of exhaustion hit her like a train. From the lack of sleep after Stain to the stress this afternoon, Katara's few hours of rest had finally caught up to her. The food in her stomach was the final straw, bringing on a comforting euphoria over the waterbender. A long yawn escaped her throat as she felt her eyes grow heavy. "Wow, that came out of nowhere." She attempted to laugh out.
Hearing her yawn forced Shoto to as well, laying his head back on the cushion. "Yeah, I feel it too now. We should get some rest."
While she wanted to get up, Katara's body was now screaming at her not to move, and right now she was pretty tempted to oblige. "I could probably… sleep here," She let out another yawn, her eyes growing heavier by the second. "Maybe just… a few… minutes…"
In a matter of seconds, Katara was out cold on the couch, her mouth slightly hung open as she laid against the back cushion. Shoto looked over in amusement to her sleeping already, feeling another yawn coming over himself. "If I don't get up, I'm going to pass out as well." he groaned and shifted to get up. Before he did, he noticed Katara's body falling towards him, reaching over and catching her. Doing so though, his eyes widened as she unconsciously gripped his arm and held onto it.
"What the…" He mumbled and tried to pull his arm free, only to have her now lay her head on his shoulder and moan in her sleep. He sat still as she cuddled against him, his face heating up slightly from the contact she was giving. He didn't know if he should try and pull himself free, or just sit here with her latched onto him. This was something he had never done with anyone, the feeling bringing new confusing thoughts into his mind.
And yet… it felt… good.
He shifted his gaze down at the girl on his arm, for the first time truly looking at her. After all this time in class, he had never noticed how smooth her tanned skin was, complimented by her flowing dark chocolate hair. He couldn't help but notice how the two loops of hair dangled in front of her face, adding a sweet touch of detail that would be complimented with her bright blue eyes. Blue eyes he for some reason, wanted to see again right then. He laid his head down on the headrest, unable to take his gaze off her long lashes, imagining them fluttering open to give him a look at those beautiful eyes before bed.
He was so lost in his thoughts, Shoto didn't even realize his eyes were closed trying to imagine what he was thinking. After a minute, his own exhaustion hit him as well, his mind fogging over as he fell into a sleep too. Not even knowing it, his body slumped over, sliding along the couch until his head rested on top of the girl next to him. Neither knew what they were doing, and yet they felt relaxed and at peace.
Notes: OHHHHHHHH! so we had quite a lot in this chapter. emotions, fights, babies, and some couch time! what will come from all of this?!
