A/N: I wrote this years ago and finally decided to post it. I hope you like it :)
After wining her fifth ribbon May was more than excited for the Grand Festival. She had already heard that Drew, Solidad and Harley would be taking part in it as well and she was excited to see them again. If she was honest with herself, she was glad that she hadn't seen Harley in a while, but she was looking forward to meeting up with Solidad again. Then there was Drew. He was her rival, but he was also special to her. They met each other often and even though he never seemed to take part in the contests she did, he was still there to tease her afterwards with a rose in hand, which never failed to make her blush. Considering that, she wasn't all that surprised when she met him again shortly before the Grand Festival.
May smiled contentedly after another hard training. This year she was more determined than ever to win and finally fulfill her dream to become the best coordinator. Today she had trained only with Beautifly to work on a special performance for the appealing round. Her pokemon was in top form and seemed just as determined as she was.
Deciding that it was enough for today, she told Beautifly to just enjoy the rest of the day. With a small happy call of its name it flew around and May watched it with a smile on her face. Beautifly and her had always been a good team and she was glad that they both had taken the opportunity to train alone away from her other pokemon. Of course did she love all her pokemon, but sometimes she enjoyed just spending time with only one.
To May surprise they weren't alone for long when suddenly Beautifly was joined in its dancing by a quite familiar Masquerain.
"You will never win the Grand Festival if you're only playing around." And there was Masquerain's trainer as well as her strongest rival and best friend.
"Hello Drew." May turned around and smiled at him.
Reacting how he normally did, Drew flipped his hair and smirked at her.
"So you're already finished with your training? You won't beat me at the Grand Festival with an attitude like that."
"For your information Drew, we trained hard and I have the perfect performance for my appealing round." She countered his teasing. After years of it, she finally managed a few comebacks when she was in a good mood.
Just like always when they met Drew's teasing continued, but May smiled the whole time. Every time she was around Drew, she was just happy and her heart often beat faster when he hid a few compliments in his words.
Suddenly her attention was drawn to their pokemon, who were flying high in the sky. Masquerain was showing off his wings in the glistening sun and made a few flying tricks that Drew had surely taught him. Beautifly wasn't as high in the sky as Masquerain, but called its name in a happy manner while watching the performance the other pokemon was showing. Despite that they had to battle against each other in contests, their pokemon always looked so perfect and happy together.
"They're getting along so well." May said and kept watching them dance around each other.
Drew had to agree, but in his opinion they didn't only get along. It was obvious to anyone watching that Masquerain was courting Beautifly. They were just like him and May. He had tried to tease her just to get a reaction out of her and if he was completely honest with himself, he wanted her attention and tried to impress her when she was watching his performances. Then he had started giving her red roses, a sign of love in every language. However May was still obvious to his feelings, but maybe now was the time that she would finally realized it due to their pokemon. That was at least what he had hoped until May spoke up again.
"Don't you think that they are great friends?"
The brunette smiled at him awaiting his reaction, but what she saw made her smile disappear. Drew looked almost like someone had slapped him and he immediately called Masquerain back into its pokeball, leaving Beautifly looking sadly.
"Sure." His voice sounded bitter and he turned around, ready to walk away. "See you around."
May was confused for a moment while Beautifly landed on her head. She felt hurt by his reaction, but then her anger got the best of her. What was his problem? Not only had he just taken Masquerain away from her pokemon, but what was even worse was that he had just left her standing there.
"Drew, wait." She called after him but he ignored her. Getting even more angry she ran after him and took a hold of his arm, making him drop Masquerain's pokeball.
"What?" He turned around and faced her, clearly annoyed.
"Couldn't you see that Masquerain was playing with Beautifly?"
That was the last straw. Drew had tried to hold back his feelings, acting like the cool and collected guy that he was, but this was enough.
"How could you be so dense. They weren't playing. Can't you see that Masquerain was trying to impress Beautifly? That is called courting May and they are surely more than just friends."
"How do you know that?" May was blushing now.
"It's obvious, has been for a while. I don't think anyone fails to see it with the exception of you." His voice softened when he saw her blushing. He had always had a soft spot for her, especially when she was like this.
Before May could respond their attention was drawn to Beautifly, who was now landing in front of Masquerain's pokeball and gently pushed the open button with its head. Both trainers watched in amazement how a red light emitted from the pokeball and Masquerain flew up in the air, only to be joined by a happy Beautifly.
"Maybe you're right, but Beautifly is shy. Masquerain is flying so high and it's hard for her to keep up." May whispered quietly, her eyes following their two pokemon.
"Beautifly is great and even if she doesn't think so herself, Masquerain surely does. There is no big gape between them that's preventing them from being together. They are both equally talented."
They had long stopped talking about their pokemon at this point and more about themselves. It was now obvious to Drew that May was insecure. Often enough had she been too self-conscious about herself, but this was the first time that he realized that she was feeling like she wasn't good enough for him. Sure, he always teased her, but he only wanted to fire her up so she could improve herself as a coordinator.
"May, please look at me." When she hesitantly faced him, he took one deep breath and said to her what he had wanted to confess for a while now. They had danced around each other long enough, just like Beautifly and Masquerain were doing right now in the sky. "When I first saw you at the beach with Beautifly I teased you, but then I saw how hard you work and how caring you are to everyone around you. I started falling for you and with every rose that I gave to you, I hoped that you would realize it. I really like you, May."
"Do you really mean that?" Her eyes shone brightly with hope.
Deciding that they had already talked too much and she had often enough misunderstood his flirting, Drew decided on a different approach. Slowly leaning down, he waited for May to tell him to stop if this wasn't what she wanted, but instead she closed her eyes and leaned in as well.
Their lips met in a gentle first kiss and May felt her heart beat even faster when he pulled her closer by the waist. Maybe she had really been a little dense to not realize Drew's feelings for her, but she was happy that he had confessed to her.
When they pulled away from each other, without breaking their embrace, Drew smiled at her before looking up at their pokemon.
"Do you still think that they're just friends?"
"No, I think you were right. They are courting." Then she shyly looked back at him, her insecurity breaking through. "Does that mean that we're dating?"
"If you want to."
With a small nod and another sweet kiss, both trainers started into a new adventure with their pokemon flying happily over them.
