"Can you say mama," Gillian said to Emily who was sitting in her lap. She was now 7 months old and was starting to put certain sounds together when babbling. 'ba-ba-ba' and 'da-da-da' with a very, very infrequent 'ma-ma-ma' are some of those sounds.
Cal was through the roof eight days ago when Emily said 'da-da' and since then, Gillian felt like she spent all day asking Emily to say mama. She knew as a psychologist dada was much easier for babies who even had two mothers or a single mother and never heard dada come out of their mouths, so she was very happy for Cal.
He of course went crazy and showed everyone the video they captured of the exact moment, hence why Gillian was trying so hard for mama. It truly wasn't the end of the world, she spoke to Emily constantly because the more you speak to your baby, the more likely they are to start understanding.
"Say dada, Em. Say dada," Cal teased, sitting next to his wife.
"Ma-ma, come on baby girl you can do it. Ma-ma."
"Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba," Emily said before squealing and clapping her hands, throwing her head back. Cal and Gillian laughed, leave it to their daughter.
"Ma-ma."
"Da-da."
"Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba." Emily said again.
The parents couldn't stop laughing, 7 months old and already stubborn. In actuality, none of the babbling actually meant anything; babies don't typically say and mean mama or dada until about 9-12 months based on all the psychology Gillian knows but Cal was too excited to fill him in on that.
Once she says dada and means it, maybe Cal will figure it out, Gillian wasn't going to be the one to rain on his parade though. At 7 months old Emily did know a fair amount of sign language, something Gillian felt strongly about their child knowing before they knew if Emily was a baby girl or boy.
It's great for a baby's development and helps them communicate which has been helpful for Cal. He was amazing with Emily, but he will admit because Gillian has been with her much longer than he was, there are times he doesn't know what a specific cry means the way Gillian does.
Cal absolutely loves that about Gillian though—she knows absolutely everything there is to know about their daughter and anytime she learned something new, made sure Cal knew right away because she's extra special that way.
Since being back from Hawaii, Gillian has done well with being back to work part time. Everyone has loved having Emily at the office, especially Cal who was able to spend more time with his daughter seeing as she's always in the same place he is.
Anna didn't mind being back considering she took care of Emily while the parents worked and when either of them had Emily, she was able to visit with her friends at the office. The office space in between Gillian and Cal's offices became the 'Emily Zone' according to Loker, filled with her toys along with anything and everything she could ever need or want.
Emily didn't need to adjust too much to the new schedule because between her parents constantly taking her with them around the office, Emily didn't spend that much extra time with Anna. Cal really liked this new set up—the office became a much happier place, surprisingly more work got done, and everyone enjoyed having Gillian back.
On Monday, the Lightman's arrived at the office together, Ria rushing towards them the second they got off the elevator. This happened pretty much every day, no longer for Ria to ask a million questions to Cal or Gillian but instead to see Emily.
"Oi, are we bloody invisible?" Cal asked, walking now with his arm around Gillian's waist as Ria took off down the hallway with Emily.
Ria made a face and then continued heading towards Emily's playroom, a room where Ria herself often went when she was having trouble with a case. Actually, most of them went in there when the case became extra difficult because Emily made everything better.
"I'll take that as a yes," Gillian laughed.
"Bloody hell, it's turned into the Emily Lightman Group."
Gillian angled herself patting his chest and winked, "It's going to be alright honey. I still love you."
"Thanks love," he said with a kiss. "I love you too."
"Oh god, it's too early for all of that," Loker said, covering his eyes. "Is it done? Are you done?"
"Yes Eli," Gillian responded, he could be so dramatic sometimes it really felt as if they had three children.
"Did you just get in?" Cal looked at his watch and gave Loker a face.
"Yeah. I was just laying in bed and then I got to thinking about…"
"Bored."
Gillian and Cal started walking towards their offices when Loker realized, "Wait a minute, where's Emily?"
"Torres, who was bloody here on time, has her."
Gillian went to check on Emily while Cal went into his office after Heidi told them he had a call on line 1. Gillian found Emily already out of her stroller and propped up against the gigantic teddy bear that helped her sit upright alone, chewing on her giraffe, as Ria stacked blocks.
"Are you okay, Ria?" Gillian asked gently. Emily can't even hold herself up, never mind stack blocks which is why the psychologist was worried. Emily could hold herself upright most of the time however, they liked everyone to think she couldn't to be on the safe side as everyone besides Anna easily got distracted.
"I'm fine," Ria answered.
"The inflection in your voice tells me otherwise. What's going on?" Gillian put a hand on Ria's shoulder and squatted down next to her, letting the other woman know she was truly there for her.
Since Ria has worked at the Lightman Group, she has opened up with Gillian on occasion, feeling as though she got a wonderful mother-like figure, friend, co-worker and psychologist all in one. They weren't that far apart in age hence mother like, but Gillian had a lot of wisdom which Ria truly appreciated.
"It's my sister," she said, her voice quiet. Gillian sat on the padded mat they had covering the entire room for Emily, letting her daughter grab at her bracelets as she listened to Ria. "I umm, I almost came over to your house last night…but with Em I…"
Ria stopped stacking the blocks but couldn't look up at Gillian either; her eyes were getting a bit blurry with tears however, she was trying so hard not to let them fall because to her that would be so embarrassing.
"What is it honey? What's going on?" Gillian asked, throwing in a pet name to help the woman in front of her feel more comfortable opening up.
Ever since Emily was born, the phone calls, text messages and pop by's happened less frequently—Gillian knew that's why Ria didn't come over however, with something that's causing her so much stress, the mother felt badly.
"I got this voicemail last night from my sister and umm, I think she's in trouble. I wanted to know if, she just, she's always been a troublemaker and she's in juvie right now. I never know if she's telling me the truth or not, but it was just, I don't know."
The way Ria was speaking made Gillian nervous; the young woman always knew what she was trying to say but today was speaking in a lower voice, stumbling over words, and did not knowing what she was saying or how to say it.
"May I hear the voicemail?"
Ria took her phone out of her pocket and played the voicemail, hoping that Gillian would be able to hear something she couldn't because of everything she'd been through with her sister. It was hard to see past all of Ava's lies most of the time and because of that, Ria found it extremely hard to ever believe her.
Gillian knew of Ava, however, didn't know the details. She only knew of her because Ria confided in Gillian about some of her childhood which eventually involved Ava. She heard real fear in Ava's voice though and wished Ria didn't feel as if she couldn't come to their home or at least call.
Cal and Gillian wouldn't have done anything last night due to the timestamp on the voicemail, but they would have answered the phone or door. All she can do now is let everyone know it was okay if something serious like this—and that's what she will do after they help Ria.
"Thank you for sharing this with me. Do I have your permission to show this to Cal?"
"Do you think she's lying?" Ria asked.
"I do not, I would like to get his opinion on it as well though and then we will figure out what to do next."
"I guess that's okay. Umm, hey thanks," Ria smiled, finally making eye contact with Gillian.
"Of course, I'm always here for you." Gillian was now standing and after making sure Torres would stay with Emily, Gillian went into her husband's office.
"Bloody hell, were you wearing that when we left the house?"
Gillian looked down at herself then back at him, "Yes, why?"
Cal stood up and wrapped his arms around her feeling incredibly lucky and gave his wife a very long, passionate kiss. "You look ravishing love."
Gillian felt a little dazed from the kiss causing her to have to catch her bearings. "Who was on the phone? Was it a case?"
"Governor wants to meet Thursday, I told him we'd have time then to discuss the upcoming election. What case do you have?"
"Ria's sister, Ava, might be in trouble," Gillian relayed the information she knew and played him the message. Everyone knows Cal is not one to ever be very kind or compassionate towards anyone besides his wife and daughter however, it seemed as if Emily helped him grow a softer side.
He could see his wife was worried about Torres and he really did like her—they've worked with a lot of naturals since starting and none of them made it but Torres. He worked with her, put in the extra training Gillian asked him to, went on cases together leaving Gillian and Loker to the others…it was good though. He also liked that Gillian and Torres had such a great relationship as well.
"Okay, what detention center is she in? We need to call in Reynolds, there's no way we will be able to get our hands on any bloody documents without hearing about the royal 'doctor confidentiality' bull shit."
"Are you going to call him, or do you want me to?"
"I'll call him, is Em set for the day?"
"Not yet, I was in there talking with Ria."
"You go to Em, I'll make the call." They exchanged a kiss and then Gillian went back into Emily's playroom. Anna was now in there as well and Emily looked like she was having so much fun. Gillian has left the office a total of three times without Emily and each time it feels like her heart is being ripped from her heart.
She knows eventually it will get easier but right now it still sucks so much. Anna looked up and said her good morning and then Gillian signaled for Ria to follow her. "Mommy will be right back baby," she said to Emily before shutting the door.
"He thinks I'm crazy, doesn't he?"
"Why would you say that? Not at all, this is serious. He's getting Reynolds down here so we can figure out the best plan of action."
"Really?"
"Yes. Go see him and get Loker up to speed, I'm going to get Em settled for the day."
"Thank you so much!"
While at Covington, Cal had already kicked Torres out of the room where he was questioning Ava and told off the tall, stupid Doug…Dingo…Dave asshole off because he was hitting on his wife. Gillian got a good read on Ava while Cal was doing the questioning, ignoring anything Dave Burns said because she was not interested, and Torres was left to watch with them.
"I'm off, nice knowing you," Cal said, about to walk out the door because Ava was giving him the run around.
"Wait!" Ava screamed, telling Cal what he wanted to hear so he wouldn't leave.
Reynolds and Loker went back to the office to get the warrants needed while Torres was talking with Ava and the Lightman's were meeting with the staff members and watching a group therapy video.
After speaking with a few more people, Cal asked his wife to take Torres back to the office while he proceeded to sneak Ava out; he knew he was going to get in trouble with Gillian, but it was worth it to solve this case.
When the women got back to the office, Torres didn't even try to hide how she was feeling and followed Gillian into Emily's playroom again. There's nothing like stacking blocks to help Ria focus herself which is what she did as Emily snuggled into Gillian.
"Hi baby girl," Gillian said, kissing Emily's temple. They made it just in time for Emily's feeding, something she predicted was one of the reasons Cal sent them back; even though he was sneaking Ava out, he was mostly concerned about getting Gillian back because their daughter would need her.
Anna left to go talk with Heidi while Gillian started to nurse Emily—she didn't care Ria was in there with her, she was very content stacking the blocks and did not even notice Anna left never mind the fact her boss was breastfeeding.
Gillian was covered up enough and eventually asked Ria if she wanted to talk about it; after a few minutes, Ria composed her thoughts enough to tell Gillian how she felt. She hated how out of sorts Ava made her feel—all the lying, the fights, the trouble Ava got into always made Ria lash out in her own way which had a lot to do with how they were raised.
Neither had an easy childhood, dealing with the same father but learning from a young age which way they were heading because of their dad. Ria found reading people the easiest way to get by however, didn't know her natural 'superpower' growing up, just knew it helped her get by.
Ava found starting fights and lying to be the way to go, even though she was getting in trouble all the time, it helped her feel better about the shitty upbringing she dealt with. Being younger, there was still time to turn Ava around and get her on the right track, something Gillian would make sure of.
After talking with Gillian, Ria felt better and they both went to see what Reynolds and Loker were working on, Emily content in Gillian's arms; she was happily full and ready to watch mommy work as her third nap wasn't for another two hours.
The next thing anyone new, Cal and Ava were walking in and Loker said, "Oh look, little Torres."
"Is it bring your baby to work day?" Ava snickered.
"Careful love," Cal warned, smiling at Emily who was kicking her little legs in Gillians arms seeing daddy.
Ava gave Cal a look and Torres quickly made sure her little sister turned the attitude off.
"I don't think she cares, Torres," Cal remarked. He couldn't help but walk over and take Emily out of Gillian's arms, she was just too excited to see him.
"Wait a minute…" Ava started to say, piecing things together as Torres grabbed her arm and yanked her towards the door.
"My bosses are married and that's their daughter, insult them or say anything else about their baby and this is over; I'll drag you back kicking and screaming if you don't zip it."
While Torres and Ava were out in the hall, Gillian took the opportunity to tell Cal just how much he screwed up. "You could be charged with aiding and abetting, or kidnapping."
"Yeah, well I've been charged with worse love."
Gillian took Emily out of his arms and rolled her eyes, "Remember you have a family to think about."
"Oi, I barely got a chance to say hello to my princess."
Normally Gillian would feel badly, she does see Emily more than Cal but right now she was too mad at her husband. It's something that works well for their marriage: them fighting at work means they never fight at home.
Yes, this was to help Torres but breaking the law to do so…she was going to stay mad for a bit while Cal sorted this mess out and if that meant keeping Emily in her arms about two feet from Cal, so be it. Nothing could actually make her keep Emily away, she didn't even leave the room, just held her so Cal understood.
Cal did feel badly—he's never really learned how to think before acting and while a lot of times it works in his benefit, there are times like right now where he realizes he has screwed up even though he knows in the end it will work.
"FYI, I'm not staying with you," Ava said, bringing Cal and Gillian out of their silent argument.
"Tell me where you're gonna stay then," Torres said, getting in her little sisters face, "…some low life boyfriends?"
"I'm staying with Loker," Ava announced, shocking everyone. He was the only one who wasn't giving her a hard time, getting in her face, or trying to psychoanalyze her like Ria, Cal and Gillian.
"Now, don't go thinking this is a get out of jail free pass, cause it's not. As soon as this is solved, you're going straight back inside. In the meantime, you're staying with your sister."
"What?" Ava and Ria said at the same time, looking at Cal like he was insane; Ava because she didn't want that at all and Torres because, well she didn't really know.
Ava walked out of the room, Gillian following behind her to make sure the girl didn't leave while Cal explained to Torres, "You're off the case, she's going to fight you the whole bloody way so getting you both out of here is best."
Cal couldn't have Ava go stay with Reynolds for obvious reasons, Loker would be giving Ava exactly what she wanted, and it's not like she could stay with them because, duh, Emily.
Torres was pissed, slamming the door as she walked out the same way Ava just did and Cal shook his head, "The Torres twins."
The case continued when the sisters left, Gillian calling 'Dingo' into the office to chat with Cal while she packed Emily up for the day knowing they were heading home after they finished talking.
"…No you don't have to go back to work and you do care what I think."
"Look I don't even need to be here," Dave shouted back in anger.
"Why are you then?" Cal asked, knowing this was going to be good.
"Dr. Foster said you wanted Maurice's file."
"You got the hots for Foster."
"I cared about Marley and wanted to help," Dave responded, turning to face the door as he started walking out.
"No, tell the truth Burnsy. Now assuming you're not the father, I could put in a good word for you with…oh, no I bloody won't because Foster is my wife."
"You're kind of a jerk."
"Yeah, I have been told that. I get it though, I get it," Cal continued to say, accusing the man of sleeping with a teenager.
He eventually realized Burns was telling the truth and was a little disappointed seeing as he was so in love with his wife—it would have been easier for Cal if Burns was a bad guy; granted he knew Gillian was the furthest thing from interested in even his work never mind him, but Cal always loves showing off how Gillian is his wife any chance he got.
On the way home, Cal's phone rang, and he pulled over. Cal of course wasn't using Bluetooth so Gillian could only try and figure out what was going on until the call ended, and he explained everything; instead of going home they went to Torres's place.
Gillian understood how important it was for one of them to rush in and make sure everyone was okay, so she didn't take it personally when Cal ran inside while she got Emily out. They knew because Cal had to break the law to get Ava out, calling the police would only get all of them in trouble which meant handling everything alone.
When Gillian walked in she heard Cal scream, effectively ending the argument between the sisters. Ria was blaming Ava however, truth be told, it wasn't Ava's fault—sure, she might have done some messed up stuff when she was younger but this time Ava really didn't do anything besides try to protect her friend Marley.
Cal took Ava into the other room while Gillian stayed with Ria who couldn't keep her tears at bay. Mindful of Emily, Gillian comforted Ria and helped her make sense of everything. When relaying what happened to Gillian, Ria remembered more of what happened, letting her know it was three boys and a girl.
As much as Gillian wanted to say no, she knew the right thing to do was bring Ria and Ava home with them. Normally she wouldn't have any problem with this but that's before Emily—they do have a top-of-the-line security system at home that Cal installed when Gillian was pregnant which would keep them extra safe though.
Cal wanted to know for himself if Ava had anything to do with the break-in because like his wife, he too knew the right thing to do; Cal typically does, however, normally has no issue knowing and doing something else meaning…he would have no issue making sure Ria and Ava were okay and then continuing on his way home with his family.
He knew the right thing to do was bring them to their house though, and knew his wife would feel the same way. After making sure Ava truly didn't know, they waited for Ria to pack some things and then headed home with two extra people.
When they got home, Cal started on dinner while Gillian gave Emily a bath in the sink. Every bath Gillian thinks back to her first bath in the sink and how naïve she and Cal were assuming sink baths would end a long time ago—she was happy every time that they weren't.
Ava and Ria felt strange sitting at the kitchen island as the Lightman's typical night played out. Ria because these are her bosses and she felt like she was intruding on something personal and Ava because she just thought the whole dang thing was odd…typical moody teenager.
As Gillian scooped up a towel clad Emily, she suddenly realized they didn't ask, "You don't have any food allergies, right?"
"Nah, but I don't like…"
Ria whacked Ava forcing her to stop the list she was about to give Gillian of the foods she didn't like. "You'll eat what you're given and like it," Ria whispered.
"Fine," Ava said, rolling her eyes.
Gillian let it go and asked Cal where he put Emily's pjs, not seeing them. Ria realized they were under the arms she had folded on the kitchen counter and handed them to Gillian, feeling more awkward than she already did.
Gillian took Emily into the other room to get her dressed while Cal continued cooking. The Torres sisters moved into the living room once Emily was in her pjs and Ria sat down to play with her, telling Gillian if she needed to do anything, she'd watch Emily.
The mother knew the alarm was on and felt comfortable putting a load of laundry in, washing Ava's clothes while she was at it so the teenager could wear them again tomorrow. Her sisters' sweatpants were fine for hanging around and sleeping but she was going to have to wear her clothes again.
"You used to be this cute ya know," Ria said, looking at Emily and thinking back to when her sister was this little.
"Like a million years ago," Ava said, rolling her eyes again.
Gillian was happy her plan was working—yes, her husband was insane for breaking the law, yes, she was nervous to have the Torres girls over because of the possibility of the attackers coming back, yes, she was extra worried because of Emily…but she was happy seeing Ria remembering all the good times with Ava, something she saw happening right before her eyes.
"We told them the alarm was on, right?"
This was the third time Gillian had asked Cal the same thing; she was paranoid Ava would try to sneak out setting the alarm off for all the wrong reasons—not to mention the fact she didn't want Ava sneaking out because it was dangerous.
"Yes love, they know. Torres won't let Ava out of her sight anyways."
"Cal, once she's asleep she will have no idea if Ava tries to sneak out."
"I always know when you get up with Emily, and you always know when I do too," Cal argued.
"They aren't a married couple with a baby, they're sisters."
"You have a point there, love."
Even though Emily has slept in her crib for months, tonight she was in her bassinette which was in Cal and Gillian's room; Cal was actually the one to suggest it—they weren't worried about Ria or Ava being around Emily, but god forbid another break-in happen, neither parent would forgive themselves if Emily wasn't in their room.
Emily might be 7 months old, but they are still new parents which means all their fears are magnified. In the morning, they realized how foolish they were for being so worried about nothing however, last night their fears were very real.
As Cal made breakfast and Gillian fed Emily some homemade applesauce, Ria and Ava came down the stairs yawning and stretching, still in their pjs. Ria blinked a few extra times as Ava covered her eyes due to how bright it was in the kitchen, "Oh my gosh, how are you guys already dressed?"
"It's like, barely the morning," Ava added.
Gillian and Cal exchanged a look before laughing a bit, "It's 8'oclock in the morning."
"You woke me at 8!" Ava said incredulously towards her sister.
"Dang, even Em is dressed for the day," Ria remarked, ignoring Ava.
Gillian fed Emily another bite after she started banging her hands on the kitchen island and let Cal deal with the half-asleep sisters. "Oi, go upstairs, take a shower and be ready for breakfast in the next 25 minutes, ya hear?"
Ria and Ava stumbled up the stairs leaving a laughing Gillian and giggly Emily in their wake as Cal just shook his head. "Bloody 8am."
Cal and Gillian had finished eating their breakfast by the time the sisters came back downstairs as a full plate was put in front of them. "Eat up," Gillian added, placing a cup of coffee down for Ria, juice was already out for them as well.
"We're leaving in 15 minutes," Cal finished, walking out of the kitchen after his wife and daughter to complete their morning routine. He packed Emily's bag and Gillian went to pick out her heels, something she still to this day left until the last minute in Cal's mind.
It was now time for Ria and Ava to exchange a look of their own. She knew without a doubt Gillian always had her shit together and while Cal always dressed the same way and didn't have as much to do to get ready in the morning, they also had a baby to get ready as well and somehow did all of it before 8am.
This was now the second meal Ria ate at her bosses' house and she couldn't believe such a complete breakfast was also made before 8am; dinner, sure she knew they could cook, and well, but breakfast too? Really put her typical pop tart in the morning to shame.
The case ended with Cal getting in the Deputy's face until she finally admitted the break-in's and the murder was her fault because she believed the kids she fixed owed her something ; what she didn't know is she admitted everything in front of everyone from Covington.
The kids cheered and Burns once again tried to make small talk with Gillian who once again brushed him off. This guy, Gillian thought to herself, he clearly didn't understand what married meant.
After the kids went back, Ava stayed but didn't know why; she remembered Cal saying once this was over, she was going back. All Gillian had to do was make a phone call and got Ava into a specialized school rather than her going back to Covington.
This school would help her get on track mentally, as there was a full staff of psychologists and it would be a place where Ria could go visit anytime she wanted. It was on a beautiful campus and would be much better for her.
She explained the school to Ria and let her do the honors of telling Ava. Ria was shocked to learn Foster did that for her and Ava—she knew Gillian was beyond nice, even to people who didn't deserve it, but after everything that's happened in the last 24 hours, she didn't expect anything else.
Ria hugged Gillian and then the mother left her office so Ria and Ava could talk while she went to see Emily; she was surprised when her daughter wasn't in the playroom, instead sleeping in Cal's arms as he completed some paperwork.
That was his new thing—paperwork was always something he left for everyone else until Gillian was about 6 months pregnant and then he started doing his own. She was honestly a little surprised he continued doing his own once Emily was born however, was loving how much less paperwork she had because of it.
Gillian leaned against the doorway watching him work, loving how he instinctually looked down at Emily every few minutes, kissing the top of her head gently. She looked down at her watch and new Emily would be waking up any minute now and waited. Cal clearly didn't see her and there was nothing better than seeing the two of them together.
A few minutes later, Emily was waking up, stretching her little body and Cal put his pen down. "Good morning love, did you have a good nap?" Emily looked up at Cal then reached her little hand up; Cal kissed the hand over his mouth and Gillian laughed a little bit when Emily grabbed his lips.
Cal looked up and saw such a beautiful site; Gillian will always be the most stunning woman in the world to him. Out of habit he looked her up and down, he couldn't really help himself. He repositioned Emily as Gillian walked over to them, standing up to properly kiss her and then handed Emily over.
As much as he wants to believe he's the favorite, he can't blame Emily for being more attached to Gillian.
"Did you send Anna home?"
Cal nodded and wondered why they were paying her so much anyway, seeing as they oftentimes had Emily while working. It wouldn't always be that way though and Gillian wanted to make sure Emily was truly comfortable with Anna because the older Emily gets before she can start school, the more necessary Anna will be.
It was very beneficial to have Anna in their lives so early because Emily had been going through a phase lately where she was completely attached to Gillian as she now realized if she wasn't in mommy or daddy's arms and didn't like it one bit.
Anna was somewhat of a common ground with Cal, and he didn't know whether to be offended that he was on the nanny's level or not. Gillian had to show him numerous studies that proved he wasn't the only dad out there who went through this—it's actually very common.
At a certain age, the baby becomes attached to mommy and in some cases doesn't even tolerate dad at times. Cal was happy Emily didn't just tolerate him but actually liked being with him as well as Gillian.
Until the day comes where Emily goes back to not caring whose arms she was in, Gillian was continuing to master doing everything with Emily in her arms.
"Come on, let's go home."
Cal closed his laptop and wrapped his arm around Gillian, "Let's go home indeed, love."
