Naruto wanted to warn his father of Itachi's plans, unfortunately, he never got the chance. As mad as he was at his father for trying to use his relationship with Sasuke to gain intel, it didn't change the fact that he still loved his father. He thought maybe if he told his father, then he could leave and hide before anything was released. The police got to him before Naruto had the chance. They had raided their house and arrested Minato while Naruto was at Sasuke's apartment. It wouldn't surprise him if it was part of Itachi's plan for him to find out and still not be able to do anything about it.
He sat on Sasuke's couch and watched the news. His father was on screen, being handcuffed and taken away by the police. "Today a local business owner, Minato Namikaze, was arrested for money laundering. Inside sources say he was working for a well known CEO who has not been identified at this time. It is believed that there may be ties to the mafia. In recent months the police have been working to clean up the city of corruption with the continued investigations of high profile men and women conducting illegal activity. Police have refused to comment at this time if this is in connection to any of the prior arrests," the anchor reported.
He quickly turned off the television, not wanting to hear what they may say about his father. Minato had been respected in the community, now he was just going to be on a long list of people Itachi decided to expose in his mission to take down anyone he saw fit.
"You can stay here as long as you need," Sasuke told him, knowing he wouldn't be able to go home any times soon. "I don't think the police will be releasing your house or the restaurant any time soon," he felt bad for the other man, knowing what it was like to have your life turned upside down.
Before Naruto could respond there was a knock on the door. It didn't take a genius to guess who it was. Sasuke got up, opening the door to find a large group of officers surrounding the building. "What can I do for you officers?" He asked, knowing they were ready to shoot if he so much as seemed to be going for a weapon.
"We just have some questions for you," one replied.
"That's quite a bit of officers for some questioning," Sasuke replied. He didn't wait for the man to respond before calling out, "Naruto, the police want to talk to us." He turned back to the officer, "Unless you have warrant stating otherwise, only two of you can come in. I don't consent to any searches."
The officer was clearly upset and didn't have said warrant, "We'd like for you to come down to the station to talk."
"Should I call a lawyer?" He asked, not trusting them for a second.
"Do you have something to hide?" The officer retorted.
"I think we both know that doesn't matter with the way you twist the narrative to fit what you think you know," he shook his head.
Naruto came up behind him, clearly a little scared at what was happening, "What's going on?"
"He wants us to come down to the station to talk," Sasuke responded, never breaking eye contact with the officer. "I was just telling him this is a bit of overkill for just wanting to talk." The officer seemed uncomfortable at the way Sasuke continued to stare at him, but was trying hard not to be the one to break eye contact. "We'll meet you at the station with our attorney," he told the officer.
The man seemed like he wanted to argue, but refrained from doing so, "Fine."
When the police left, Naruto turned to Sasuke, "You have an attorney on speed dial?" He was confused with the way Sasuke was acting. "It's just some questioning, why do we need an attorney? We did nothing wrong."
"They don't care what you did and didn't do. They don't believe that you didn't know anything and will find a way to twist your words to use it against you. I'll get us an attorney," Sasuke told him, thinking abut how everyone treated him after his father was taken away. There was always a cloud of suspicion, despite his young age at the time. "Just give me a second," he told him, clearly asking Naruto not to follow him or ask questions.
Sasuke walked into his room and pulled out the burner phone he had for emergencies to text Orochimaru.
Sasuke: I need an attorney now
Unknown: He's already on his way
Unknown: destroy this phone
Sasuke didn't reply. He opened the phone and pulled out the SIM card. He broke it in half before walking into the bathroom and flushing it down the toilet. He looked at the phone, throwing it into his dresser drawer. If they somehow managed to get a warrant and find it before he had the chance to truly get rid of it, they wouldn't find anything on it.
"Let's go," he said when he walked out of the room, quickly putting his shoes on. He knew that Naruto had questions that he couldn't really explain.
"What's going on?" He asked, completely confused as to what Sasuke may have been doing.
"I need you to just trust me," he told Naruto, hoping he'd understand to not ask anymore questions. "Please."
"Just promise me it's nothing illegal," the blond responded.
"I'm not doing anything illegal," he replied. Technically it wasn't a lie. He was getting assistance from someone conducting illegal activities, but he had kept his hands clean. "I promise, I'm just being cautious."
Naruto nodded, deciding to trust that Sasuke knew what he was doing. "Okay, let's go," he agreed. He couldn't really question Sasuke when he had his own secrets he'd been keeping. He was talking to Itachi behind the other man's back, he'd be a hypocrite to judge him at this point. They say that ignorance is bliss so he turned a blind eye to whatever Sasuke may be hiding.
When they arrived at the station there was already a man in a suit waiting for them with the police. He didn't even have to introduce himself for Sasuke to know that he was hired by Orochimaru to represent them. "Thank you for coming on short notice," Sasuke said, not letting them know that the two had never met before that day.
"I'm Detective Goto," the man introduced himself. "We'd like to speak with each of you separately," he told them.
"No one can speak to my clients while I'm in with the other," the attorney told the man.
"Understood," the officer replied. "I don't think I caught your name."
"You can call me Mr. Isa," he told him, clearly not planning to give him his first name. He was an intimidating man and it was clearly not his first time interacting with the police. "Who would you like to talk to first?"
"Mr. Uzumaki," the officer replied, clearly going for who he thought was the weak link first. "It's his father after all."
"Lead the way," the attorney replied, his face and voice remaining neutral.
It was obvious that Naruto was nervous as he sat across from the detective. He'd never been questioned before and it showed.
"Do you know why you're here?" The detective asked. He hadn't sat down, trying to show a sign of dominance and intimidation.
"I'm assuming it's about my father," Naruto respond. "I saw what happened on the news this morning."
"You're a young man, do you often watch the news in the morning?" He asked.
Naruto shook his head, "Sasuke does and I was at his place."
"What is your relationship with Sasuke?" He asked. It was obvious that he thought Sasuke had something to do with what was happening.
"I don't see how that is relevant to this," Naruto replied. "It's really none of your business."
The detective smirked, "Is that because it's a business relationship?"
"Detective, I don't appreciate you assuming either of my clients had something to do with this. Isn't it your job not to assume?" The attorney spoke up.
"Depends, do you kiss and cuddle with a business partner?" Naruto asked, making the detective slightly uncomfortable. "Do you have a problem with two men being in a relationship, detective?" He tried to seem confident.
"So your dating," the detective deduced.
"It's complicated," Naruto shrugged. "But I can assure you, there is no business discussed. I don't think you can even call working at a restaurant a business when all I'm doing is cooking," he added.
"We both know that's not the kind of business I'm talking about, Mr. Uzumaki," the detective replied.
"You're assuming again, detective," the attorney interrupted. "If all you're going to do is assume that my clients have done something wrong rather than asking anything that may assist you in your investigation, then I think we're done here."
"That's not pessary Mr. Isa," the detective told him, annoyed with the attorney's presence.
"Assume facts one more time and we will be leaving," he told him. "I will not allow you to harass my client."
"Understood," the detective clenched his jaw. He turned his attention to Naruto, "Did you know anything about your father's business?"
"You'll have to be more specific," Naruto told him. "If you're asking about the restaurant, then I guess the answer would be somewhat of a yes. I knew he ran it, but I never looked at the books. I'm not an accounting major. The closest I've come to money is ringing up customers and closing out the drawer at the end of the night."
"I'm not talking about the restaurant," he said.
"If you're talking about him allegedly laundering money, the answer is no. My father never told me he was doing something like that. I wouldn't have worked for him if I even thought he was," Naruto answered honestly.
"You had no suspicions?" The detective asked.
"No, my father is a good father and man. The diner has," he paused, "I guess I should say had, a steady flow of customers. I had no reason to think he couldn't keep the diner open without doing something illegal," he told him.
"Is that why you believe he did it?" He asked. "To keep the business going?"
Naruto shrugged, "As I said, my father is a good man. I can't think of any other reason he would do what you think he did. He had to have a reason." He knew what his father's reason was now, but he wasn't going to tell the detective that. The man would just use it to make it seem like he knew everything.
"How did Sasuke come into your life?" He asked.
"Be careful with your questioning, detective," the attorney warned. "My clients are here voluntarily."
"I'm not assuming anything," he replied. "It's a simple question."
Naruto sighed. He didn't like thinking about what Sasuke was going through when his father found him. "My father took him in when he was in a bad place."
"Bad place? What do you mean by that?" The detective smirked as if he had gotten something good.
"Homeless," Naruto replied sadly. "He had been so ostracized by everyone to the point people just assumed he's bad and didn't want anything to do with him. Kinda like you guys are doing right now. My father was never like that though," he told the man. "He saw the best in people and wanted to help Sasuke." The blond looked down, it hurt knowing that his father's intentions weren't really that pure. "I was like you once. I thought Sasuke was bad, but then I got to know him and he's nothing like what people think. If my dad really did what you think he did, Sasuke had nothing to do with it. Stop trying to villainize him."
"You seem very sure of that," the detective was skeptical.
"If you actually knew anything about him, you would be too," Naruto replied.
After continuing to get nothing out of Naruto, the detective finally ended the questioning. "I think we're done here. Thank you," the detective stood up.
"I'd say you're welcome, but I don't think that was a genuine thank you," Naruto got up, ignoring the detective's handshake.
"I'll go get Sasuke," the attorney told the detective as he escorted Naruto out. Once they were out of earshot of the detective he turned to the blond, "You did well."
"I told the truth," Naruto replied as they walked over to Sasuke. "Your turn," the blond told him. "Have fun."
"Always," Sasuke got up from where he was sitting. "These fuckers will try to talk to you, just ignore them," he told Naruto.
The blond nodded, "The detective seems homophobic, so make sure to have some fun with that."
"Good to know," he replied, wondering what Naruto said to him. He turned to the attorney, "Let's go have some fun."
"Here I thought I was going to have to be worried about Naruto saying something stupid," the attorney shook his head as he guided Sasuke to the room.
"Detective, always a pleasure," Sasuke greeted sarcastically as he sat down. "We can skip all the formalities, I saw the news. I know what this is about so just tell me what you're trying to blame on me." Sasuke knew the police had just been waiting to pin something on him. Make him the monster they thought he was just because of his father.
The detective seem surprised, "You see rather cocky."
"I have nothing to hide," Sasuke leaned back in his chair. "Clearly you think I do." The detective stared at him, trying to size him up. "Detective, you're going to have to do better than that to intimidate me."
"Sasuke," his attorney said, his tone warning him.
"He's at the very least heard about my father and brother, that stare does nothing compared to them. My father could shut anyone up with just a simple look," he explained. He turned his attention back to the detective, "I'm not sure what you're trying to get me to say, so you might as well just tell me."
"Why was Mr. Uzumaki at your apartment last night?" He asked. "Did your brother tell you to make sure he was there?"
"Well, I'm pretty sure he wants to fuck me, but you know a man can't give it up that easily. Gotta make him work for it, right?" He smirked at the way the detective refused to make eye contact. "I can't remember the last time I had contact with my brother. Not sure what he has to do with this. Please enlighten me, what has the golden child done now?"
"Golden child?" The detective quirked his eyebrow.
"Isn' it ironic that he was always my father's favorite? It doesn't exactly make for a great sibling relationship when he's the one that caused my world to turn upside down. If you think I'm working with him, you're wrong," he confidently told him.
"What about his enemies?" The detective asked.
"I'd have to know who his enemies are in order to work with them," he replied. "I'd also have to care, but I've moved on from that. Do you really think I'd be this sloppy if I were part of that world? My father would be so disappointed if he knew people thought about me that way. It'd be his fault though since he didn't train me to be part of that world." He leaned forward, elbows resting on the table in front of him, "Let me be very clear, I hate that world. It fucked up my life and I want nothing to do with it."
The detective wasn't convinced, "Why did you stop working for Minato?"
"I wanted a job where I don't have to work with people. I'm not exactly the most liked person out there. I've applied for jobs where I don't have to interact with the public. Packing some boxes, things like that. It takes a mental toll on a person having to deal with being constantly judged and hated for something you had nothing to do with. Hated for being born into the wrong family," he explained. It wasn't a complete lie, but the detective didn't need to know he suspected there was something wrong with Minato or that his brother had warned him about the man.
The detective paused, "It had nothing to do with him working for one of your father's biggest enemies?"
"Damn, he's that high up, huh?" Sasuke acted impressed. "I don't know who my father's enemies are. There are some people he seemed to shield me from more than others, but I didn't exactly care enough to pay attention to who they were. I was just supposed to play the part of the obedient son."
He knew that questioning an Uchiha would be difficult. These kind of people were groomed to be evasive. They had an answer for everything, but it was never the answer you wanted and usually not the truth. They made it seem like they were giving you a lot, but it wasn't anything helpful. "Why did you live with and work for Minato?"
"Desperation," Sasuke replied truthfully. "I had no place to stay, little to no food, and it got to the point that I had to swallow my pride and accept some help. He was the only person willing to give me that help. Who was I to question it?"
"Most people think you pulled Naruto and Minato into this lifestyle," the detective told him.
"They always need a bad guy," Sasuke shrugged. "I'm used to it by now."
"Used to what?"
"Being portrayed as the bad guy. Every action I make is scrutinized as if I have some bad intent behind everything I do. Is that not what you're doing to me right now?" He pointed out.
"I'm merely asking questions," the detective argued.
"You have no evidence that I had anything to do with whatever Minato has gotten himself into, yet here you are asking me about my involvement in it. Maybe you should ask your source rather than assuming that I did something," he told him, knowing their source was his brother. "Or are you so incompetent that you don't even know how to contact your source?" He taunted.
He knew that he hit a sore spot when the detective clenched his fists. "I'm not sure what source you're talking about," he lied.
"Of course you don't," Sasuke scoffed. "You can't find Itachi and you think I can, but I can't. I don't know where he is or what he's doing, nor do I want to. I don't know anything about Minato other than him giving me a chance when no one else would. Any other questions?"
"No, I think we're done here," the detective replied, knowing he wasn't going to get anything out of him.
"Let me ask you one, have you gotten that search warrant?" He smirked. The look on his face told Sasuke all he needed to know. "You know why you haven't? It's because you have nothing on me and you won't find anything. Keep up your witch hunt if you want, but it's not going to get you anywhere. Good luck, detective," he got up. "If you catch my bother, tell him I said I hope he burns in hell."
"Sometimes less is more," the attorney told him as they walked back to Naruto.
"I didn't say anything that would help them," Sasuke walked up to Naruto. "Let's get out of here," he grabbed his hand, pulling him towards the door.
"Sasuke," the attorney called after him once they were out of the station. "Be cautious, they're after you," he told him as he handed him his card. "This way you can call me directly."
"You're assuming I'll be back here," Sasuke took the card.
"With that mouth on you, I'm pretty confident you'll be in trouble again," the man told him.
"Thanks for the vote of confidence," Sasuke rolled his eyes as he and Naruto walked away.
When they got back to Sasuke's apartment, they opened the door to find an envelope with his name on it sitting on the floor. He immediately recognized the handwriting, "Can't he just leave me alone?"
"I take it, it's from Itachi?" Naruto asked, a little nervous as to what might be in the envelope.
"Who else?" He sighed as he opened the envelope. He opened the letter to find a one-way plane ticket out of the country. "He's got a lot of nerve."
'Dear Sasuke,
By now Minato should be arrested. I know the police are going to target you. The best thing you can do for yourself is to take this ticket and get out of the country. This is you way out. Your way to start a new life somewhere else. As you see, there is only one ticket. To leave this life behind, you must leave Naruto behind. Don't let yourself be brought down by this mess.
Love, Itachi'
Sasuke was furious, ready to rip up the letter. Before he could do so, Naruto grabbed it from him, reading what Itachi had to say. "He's right," Naruto told him. "You should get out of here. Take this opportunity."
"I'm not leaving you behind because his dumbass can't just leave things alone," Sasuke argued. "This is all his fault."
"That doesn't mean he's wrong," Naruto frowned. He didn't want Sasuke to be brought down when he could just leave it all behind.
"He betrayed me once, he'll do it again," Sasuke shook his head. "I don't know why he's doing this, but there's some motive behind it. If I take his offer, it looks worse on me. It lookalike I'm hiding something," he took the letter back from Naruto. "Fuck him," he ripped up the letter, thinking about just lighting it on fire.
"Maybe its time you give the police the letters," Naruto suggested as he followed the other man into the kitchen, watching him discard the letter.
Sasuke leaned against the counter and closed his eyes, "I can't do that to him. He's still my brother." He hated that he felt that way. He should hate him completely, but he didn't. Even if he did, he couldn't give the letters to the police. They'd find a way to turn it on him, he was sure of it.
"Your loyalty amazes me," Naruto told him as he walked over to the other man, pulling him into a comforting hug.
"It's been drilled into me my entire life," Sasuke pulled away from the blond with a frown.
Naruto cupped his face, "Runaway with me. Let's get out of here and forget all of this shit."
Sasuke shook his head, "We can't just run away from all of our problems. I won't let them do that to us."
There was a moment of silence as they stared into each other's eyes, "Go on a date with me."
"What?" Sasuke was surprised. It didn't seem like it was exactly the best time to talk about dating. They had just gotten home from the police station, there was more to worry about than feelings.
"I don't want to pressure you, but it doesn't seem like all of this shit is going away any time soon and it's getting hard to hold back. I know you feel it too," Naruto told him, placing his hands on Sasuke's hips and pressing their bodies together. "Date me."
Sasuke bit his lip, trying to decide what to do. He knew it would be best to get through all of this first, but his heart didn't want to wait. "We shouldn't," he told Naruto, but his actions said otherwise. Rather than moving away from him, Sasuke held him closer.
"Tell me to stop," Naruto said as he brushed his lips against Sasuke's. "Tell me to stop ad I will," his voice was just above a whisper.
"Let's date," Sasuke said before closing the gap between them, connecting their lips. It was a simple kiss, sweet and soft.
Before it could get any more passionate, the door to the apartment opened. Suigetsu looked at them, the open concept allowing him to see them from the door way. He immediately realized what he was interrupting. "If this is going any further, please take it to your room and not the kitchen. If your bare ass or cum gets on the counter you're disinfecting it or better yet replacing it."
"So the table is fair game?" Naruto grinned mischievously. "How about the couch?"
"No sex in common areas," Suigetsu demanded. "I'm happy for you, but I expect you to be decent if you're in common areas," he told them, walking towards his room.
Sasuke chuckled when Suigetsu went to his room. "We should slow down, we need to at least go on a date first."
"Of course," Naruto agreed. "I didn't plan on taking it further tonight," he told him.
Sasuke's phone dinged with a text message before either could say anything else.
Unknown: Congratulations, you have been chosen to be a new member of our crew. We will be in contact shortly to discuss the terms of your employment.
"Who is it?" Naruto asked, trying not to sound like he was suspicious or nosy.
"I had a phone interview last week with a packing company. They said they'll contact me if I get the job. Didn't expect it to be a text," he told the other man. "Looks like I got the job."
"What will you be doing?" Naruto was genuinely interested. He knew Sasuke was trying hard to find something new so he didn't feel like he was mooching off of Suigetsu and Juugo.
"Nothing too exciting, just loading and unloading boxes from trucks at night. It pays more than you think," Sasuke told him. He had been surprised when the employer told him what the salary would be if he got the job. "I know it kind of cuts into our time together, but I figured working at night would be better for school and I wouldn't have to deal with any customers," he explained.
"I'm sure that we can find time together still," Naruto smiled. "I mean, it looks like my schedule just opened up a lot. I mean, now Suigetsu's out of work too so you definitely need something."
"Suigetsu just got an offer for a different job. We thought once I left your dad would make his life harder since I'm living with him now so I talked him into looking for a new job too," he informed him. "Sorry I didn't tell you sooner. There was just so much going on that it slipped my mind."
"It's okay," Naruto smiled at him. "I'd rather he be somewhere that he feels comfortable. I guess it's a good thing now," he sighed, wondering what he was going to do. The restaurant was done for, that was a given, and he didn't have enough money to stay in his father's house. He thought about Sasuke's offer, but figured it'd be best for their relationship for to stay at Kiba's instead. Their relationship had been strained lately, but Kiba was still his best friend.
"Want to watch a movie?" Sasuke asked.
"Sounds great," Naruto agreed. As he and Sasuke relaxed on the couch, he decided going to Kiba's could wait. For tonight he'd enjoy Sasuke's company and try to forget everything that had happened that day.
