Chapter 1: A Look at Childhood

Young Montgomery 'Monty' Julian Fiske sighed, he was fourteen years old and in America with his mother, Victoria Fiske, and their Valet, James Bates. He was currently in Go City; it was his school's vacation time and his mother had decided that time in America would be fun and educational. Monty walked around the corner and stopped to observe a little girl running from some other kids, away from a playpark. He frowned; she was obviously being bullied. His eyes widened in horror as the girl, crying her eyes out, ran into the street! She didn't see the truck heading straight for her.

"Look out!" he yelled, his body moving on its own.

The girl looked up and screamed, she couldn't move. She threw up her hand in a futile attempt to protect herself. The next thing she knew, she was in someone's arms and safely on the other side of the road. She looked up into the bluest eyes she'd ever seen, like sapphires.

"Are you ok?" her rescuer asked. Monty had jumped into the road, done a quick tumble and grabbed her in his arms before leaping away with her. She nodded numbly. "Good," he said, she somewhat registered the funny accent he had. He turned and glared at the man who had been driving the truck, who was now being pulled over for questioning by the police. He carried her over to a bench and set her down, sitting next to her afterwards.

She eventually found her voice, "Thank you for saving me," she said.

Monty smiled and looked at her, she had fair skin, rosy cheeks, hair as black as his own and eyes as green as emeralds. She was definitely younger than ten. She wore a pretty pink dress with a white floral pattern, with a pink ribbon tied in her hair and white sandals. He himself was dressed in clothing befitting of his status, he was wearing a dark blue button-up shirt, unbuttoned at the collar, his red tie hanging slightly loose, light greyish-blue slacks, a matching greyish-blue jacket that hung open, and sensible black loafers with white socks. "You're welcome. I'm Monty Fiske, what's your name?"

"Skyla Emily Goodwin," she said.

"It's nice to meet you, Skyla," said Monty and she nodded. "What happened? I saw you being teased and you running but what happened before you ran? Why were you being teased?" he asked in concern.

Skyla hung her head miserably, "They, Jasmine, Shauna, Kaylee, and Ivy were teasing me about my eyes, they were saying that I had witches' eyes and that I'd grow up to be ugly with warts and fly a broom and be really mean," she sobbed.

Monty frowned and carefully hugged her. "That's not true Skyla, your eyes are lovely, they're like real emeralds, that's a precious stone. Those girls were saying mean, untrue things. You're not a witch and you're not going to fly a broom or grow warts. I doubt that you'll be mean either," he comforted her.

"Really?" and Monty nodded. She smiled.

"How old are you?" he asked.

"I'm seven, my big brother is eleven and my oldest brother is fourteen," she said. She then gasped; she was supposed to wait for at least one of them at the park.

"I'll take you back," said Monty and he stood up, took her hand, looked both ways and they crossed the street together. Monty got Skyla to the park safely and glared at the nasty girls who were still there. He stayed with Skyla, acting like a bodyguard until one of her brothers came.

"Skyla!" he called, he had wild black hair and green eyes and was dressed in a white shirt and black shorts.

"Max!" she shouted, running over to him and hugged him, beginning to cry once more.

"What happened? Were those girls teasing you again?" he asked, and he looked at Monty with a frown.

"Monty saved my life," said Skyla and his eyes widened. Monty explained everything.

"Thank you for saving my little sister, Monty," said Max gratefully.

"It was my pleasure. I'll be here for a month, so we may be seeing each other again," said Monty. Skyla smiled through her tears at hearing that. The siblings waved goodbye and went home, and Monty went to the house that they were staying in. He told his mother about what happened, and she was very proud of him. Lady Victoria Fiske was a beautiful woman, she had long black hair, in an elegant bun, grey moonstone-colored eyes, flawless fair skin and was fashionably dressed all the time. Today she wore a blue coat dress, G. Collins & Sons jewelry and a Juliette Botterill hat, the same shade of blue as her dress.

"Monty, where have you been?" she asked.

"I was exploring and saved a girl," said Monty. His mother gasped and he proceeded to tell her the full story. She was very proud of him but said they had to hurry and get ready; they were meeting the Mayor and his family for a dinner party. Monty sighed a little bit but nodded. He got ready, put on a fresh white button-up shirt, black pants, a black belt with a silver buckle, a black jacket, and a blue tie. He put on the same shoes, making sure they were shined and brushed his hair, it had gotten slightly messy.

At six thirty they were ready to go to the Mayor's house. Bates drove them there in the limo. Monty sighed, he was sure this would not go well and wished that he could have visited Skyla's house instead. He wondered where she lived.

Skyla and her brothers were getting ready, they were having guests over and as the Mayor's kids they had to look their best. She was dressed in a powder-blue dress with puffed sleeves, a pink ribbon around her waist that was tied in a bow at the back, pink socks, black Mary-Janes, and a blue ribbon was in her hair. Her brothers, Hugo and Max were in matching black tuxes with white shirts, Max wearing a purple tie and Hugo wearing a blue tie. Hugo had black hair like the rest of them, but he had blue eyes and was fourteen years old.

Skyla looked around, there were a few guests already, some of them had brought their own children, none of which were her age. She wished that there was someone for her to play with at the party. Her brothers were squirming in their tuxes, clearly uncomfortable.

The doorbell rung and the butler opened it and announced, "Lady Victoria Fiske and young Master Montgomery Fiske."

Skyla gasped in delight when she saw that it was Monty who walked in with his mom. Her father, Terrance Goodwin, a kind man with blue eyes and short, black hair and dressed in a smart black tux with a white shirt and red tie greeted the Fiskes. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Lady Fiske," he said.

"Likewise, Mayor Goodwin," she said. "This is my son, Montgomery."

Monty politely shook the Mayor's hand before meeting his wife, Cassandra Fiske, she had long black hair and green eyes, wearing a lovely aquamarine gown and shawl. Monty kissed her hand like the young gentleman he was and then they were introduced to the children. Monty's eyes widened when he saw Skyla and Max, they were the Mayor's children!

"Monty!" shouted a delighted Skyla, unable to hold back any longer. She hugged him tightly with a big smile on her face. That got raised eyebrows as Monty hugged her back.

Terrance cleared his throat and asked for an explanation. Monty and Skyla told the adults what had happened that afternoon and the Goodwin parents were very grateful. The eldest brother Hugo was also grateful, and he thanked Monty for saving his sister.

The teenagers and children had their own table and Monty found himself sitting at the head of it, next to Skyla, "I never told you, but you look very pretty tonight, Skyla," he said.

She blushed, "Thank you Monty. You look handsome," she said. He smiled and all of them enjoyed dinner. After dinner it was time for dancing, to which Monty rolled his eyes, there were a few girls around his age at the party, but he didn't want to dance with any of them. Hugo and Max had to dance; it would have been rude of them not to.

A girl asked him to dance, he politely refused. The girl huffed and walked off. Monty shrugged and then saw Skyla looking longingly at the dance floor, she obviously wanted to dance but there was no one to dance with her. Monty's heart went out to her, and he walked over. "Would the lady like to dance?" he asked, asking Skyla while holding out his hand and wearing a smile on his face.

Skyla blushed but took his hand and said, "I'd love to." Monty led the seven-year-old out onto the dance floor and began dancing with her. Skyla was super happy, and the adults thought it was adorable, Max and Hugo were happy that their little sister got to have fun and the girl that Monty said no to was mad. He didn't care, he just made sure that Skyla had a good time.

From then on Monty became good friends with Hugo, Max, and Skyla, Monty playing with Skyla when her brothers couldn't and making sure she wasn't bullied for the time he was there. It was a tearful goodbye when he did leave for England, but he promised he would write. "You promise?" asked Skyla, still with tears in her eyes.

"I promise," said Monty, giving her a big hug.

For three years he visited during his vacation, each year he asked Skyla to dance and each year she said yes. Eventually Monty's schoolwork demanded all his attention for his final year in High School. Then came college and it was even more hectic. He continued to write though but was devastated when he heard, four years later that the Goodwins house had been destroyed by a comet. Monty cried and he never knew until several years later that the little girl he'd saved all those years ago had survived.
