Blink. Blink. Blink.

Slowly a pair of orange eyes blinked open to the sight of a vibrant green grove with trees and grass with their seemingly never ending falling leaves, that was encircled by a lake of algae surfaced water that made where she stood basically an island.

Yellowfang's expectations for being greeted by a familiar long departed Clanmate or by some horrific vision weren't met as instead she was greeted by the ugliest looking tom that the medicine cat had ever seen. And she had seen plenty of ugly tom's in her life. She even helped deliver some of them.

His blind, gray eyes were unnerving as they stared straight at her.

"Who are you?" Yellowfang rasped, never before seeing this StarClan cat till now.

The nearly hairless tom carelessly shrugged. "I am who I am and I am who I always will be."

"That's not an answer!" Yellowfang grouched, getting annoyed by the games this cat seemed to want to play.

"It's one that you're just going to have to accept. Now are you just going to ask useless questions or do you want to get right to the matter at paw?."

Yellowfang flicked her tail and gestured for the strange tom to speak and get it over with. She didn't have all day after all, the moon will only stay up for so long.

"Good," the cat meowed, "I have a prophecy for you that will affect the entirety of ShadowClan and possibly the forest as a whole."

That sent a shiver down Yellowfang's back, a prophecy could be a dangerous thing and there was not always a clear definition of it until it actually came to pass.

The tom seemed to pause for dramatic effect, something Yellowfang was unimpressed with, before continuing. "Listen closely 'A friendship poisoned from harbored resentment and thirst for power will shake ShadowClan's foundation, breaking the Clan in two. but hope blooms and burns brighter and shall vanquish he who should not have been born and unite the Clan once again' that's the prophecy, now go figure it out."

"That's it?" Yellowfang asked incredulously. "Something awful is going to happen and all we have is hope."

"Just follow the dust."

"And how is that going to help save my Clan?" Yellowfang demanded, unimpressed.

"That's something for you to figure out." The cat bluntly retorted.

"You're quite vague and useless, you know that?" Yellowfang retorted.

"And you're just wasting time. Now go back to your Clan and fight over what this prophecy means with your past lover and kit father."

Like she was doused with cold water, Yellowfang was harshly awakened from her dream by invisible paws. The dream leaving her thinking; what a gossiping queen that likes stirring up a bees nest.

Marigoldpaw slowly stalked in circles, practicing her hunting under the watchful eye of her mentor, Flintfang, as she concentrated on what the gray warrior was instructing her to do. Currently it had been a few days since being made an apprentice and so far, her training was starting off slow but informative. Currently, Marigoldpaw was training in the marsh, learning to hunt on the murky, watery, unstable ground.

"Test the depth with a single tap of the surface with a paw, if you can. If it's deeper than the height between the space of your paw and forelegs, try to avoid it if at all possible. Take each step slowly, ensuring you can free your rear foot before committing, as otherwise you can be off-balance – falling over in deep mud is not fun!" Flintfang meowed, scrutinizing Marigoldpaw's stalking technique.

"And don't forget that if you do get stuck that you wiggle your paw, don't pull your paw straight out, wiggling will give the paw more room to easily pull it out."

The flame-pelted she-cat murmured a confirmation, signaling that she had heard. So far she had been doing much better with maneuvering ShadowClan's marshy terrain, able to walk upon the pine nettles instead of sinking into them and now she was training to do the same with the marsh. Although she needed to learn two separate sets of skills for each situation.

After making a few more laps stalking in the marsh without sinking, Flintfang made a pleased sound, calling for Marigoldpaw to stop.

The orange apprentice gingerly made her way over to her mentor, making sure she didn't sink or get stuck in the morass. It got her a nod of approval from her mentor.

"You're learning quick, Marigoldpaw," Flintfang meowed, standing over the flame-pelted apprentice. "I'm proud."

Marigoldpaw had to force her fur to remain flat, feeling a bit embarrassed to feel praised by simply learning to walk around. Nothing extraordinary about it. In fact, it should be something Marigoldpaw already knew, but here she was being taught to walk.

Flintfang's eyes narrowed, appearing as though he was reading her mind. "It is something I'm proud of," Flintfang repeated, giving his apprentice a sterner look. "You're much smaller than a typical size apprentice, and from the looks of it you'll probably never be as big as a regular sized warrior either. It's going to be one of your disadvantages that all cats have in some form or another. Learning how to maneuver around is important for any cat and there is no shame in learning how. Think of this day as progress, a step forward and accept every win no matter how small they may seem."

Marigoldpaw stared up at Flintfang in awe. Those had been great words of encouragement and were the right things to say in this situation. It was incredulous to think that she was Flintfang's first apprentice. The warrior was practically a natural born mentor with how patient and clear spoken he was. It made Marigoldpaw want to try harder to become a great warrior just like him.

"Do you think I'll be ready for some actual hunting soon?" Marigoldpaw hesitantly asked, not sure if she wanted to know the answer.

Flintfang's whiskers twitched as he thought over an answer. "How about you try now?"

Marigoldpaw blinked once in confusion before Flintfang gestured to somewhere behind her with a subtle nod of the head. Marigoldpaw turned just enough to see a frog clinging to the stem of a cattail, completely unaware of the danger it was in.

The flame-pelted she-cat apprentice internally blanched at the thought of catching frogs, but prey was prey and being picky went against everything that Marigoldpaw stood for. Waste not, want not. Never go hungry.

Marigoldpaw calmly but surely stalked across the marsh towards the frog. Creeping slowly as she circled around it, making sure that she was aware of where it would go if it were to jump before Marigoldpaw was ready.

The orange apprentice kept creeping forward till she was practically a mouse-whisker away and then she charged the frog with claws outstretched and unceremoniously killed it by impaling it with her sharp claws.

It fell to the swampy ground and Marigoldpaw scrambled to find and pick it up. Getting water up her dainty pink nose in the process. But she had still caught the frog overall.

Its skin was tough and slimy, and it tasted strange on Marigoldpaw's tongue. The foreign feeling caused the flame-pelted apprentice to stop for a moment and wonder whether or not she had ever tasted frog before, there was no familiarity nor melancholy feelings attached to the taste and therefore it made her unsure of just what she used to eat in her past life.

Marigoldpaw didn't have too much time to ponder over the thought as her mentor strolled over and proudly nodded towards her catch. "Not bad, you still need a bit more work on the execution but your stance and stalking skills were topnotch."

Marigoldpaw preened under the praise of her mentor. Proudly holding up her caught prey for all to see as Flintfang led them back to camp. Her good mood slowly dimmed however as they crossed paths with Nightpelt and Brokenpaw. Though Marigoldpaw was happy to see her best friend, he on the other paw looked upset and grumpy and had his head and bent tail dragging in the mud.

"Brokenpaw!" Marigoldpaw murmured around her prey, catching the dark brown tabby apprentice's attention.

Brokenpaw seemed to perk up as his head lifted and spotted Marigoldpaw who waved at him with her tail. Without any regards to his mentor, Brokenpaw came padding over towards Marigoldpaw. "Marigoldpaw, thank StarClan! I've had the worst day of my life!" Brokenpaw began a long rant about how Nightpelt wouldn't let him begin battle training, how he was still stuck with Nightpelt teaching him about the borders of ShadowClan's territory and the bare basics of everything else. "He's so old and constantly needs to take breaks! His health is also awful! I'll never get anywhere with my training at this point."

Marigoldpaw blinked sympathetic at her best friend. If anyone deserves better than that cat would be Brokenpaw. He really wanted to prove himself and here he was worried about not being able to advance like the rest of the apprentices due to poor mentorship.

When Brokenpaw took a breath after his long rant he finally appeared to register the frog that Marigoldpaw had caught. His ears pricked and whiskers twitched as a gleam of curiosity shone in his orange eyes. "Did you catch that yourself?" When Marigoldpaw nodded, Brokenpaw profusely congratulated her. "That looks great! Frogs are hard to catch because they are so slippery and here you've just caught one!"

Marigoldpaw shyly ducked her head in embarrassment under all the praise that Brokenpaw was giving her. He was such a supportive friend, even when he was having a hard day. "Is goz a lotz to earn ifff I wan't t catzh up to youz." Marigoldpaw managed to slur out around the drool that was collecting in her mouth due to how prolonged she had been carrying her frog.

Brokenpaw snorted as he shook his head. "At the pace I'm going I wouldn't be surprised if the next batch of kits are going to surpass me in training."

Marigoldpaw gently bonked her head on Brokenpaw's shoulder in a chastising manner. It was a simple gesture but Brokenpaw seemed to appreciate it all the same.

"But I really shouldn't let this drag me down," Brokenpaw continued, appearing more determined. "I'm going to be Clan leader someday and I need to train and become stronger, even if I have to train alone, regardless of what Nightpelt says."

The dreamer and dedication to his dreams that Brokenpaw had within him was what Marigoldpaw admired most about her best friend.

They were just about to enter the thorn tunnel into camp when Yellowfang practically ran into them. The grizzled dark gray medicine cat didn't look happy, much more bad-tempered than usual.

"Welcome back, Yellowfang." Nightpelt politely greeted her.

"Where's Raggedstar." Yellowfang ignored the greeting and went straight to the point. "It's urgent."

"I don't think he left camp this morning." Flintfang said helpfully. "He might be in his den."

Yellowfang grunted in response, her orange eyes falling down to look at the two apprentices trailing behind their mentors. Marigoldpaw stiffened and felt uncharacteristically nervous as Yellowfang seemed to scrutinize her from head to toe. Why the medicine cat was looking at her like that, she didn't know. Brokenpaw caught the look and glared back taking a step forward and shielding Marigoldpaw's from the medicine cat's penetrating gaze.

Yellowfang snorted and shook her head before turning and entering the thorn tunnel. Leaving both mentors and apprentices wondering what was on her mind.
