Hello, another story from me and back (after a very long break) to come back to this wonderful fandom with a new story.

I wanted to write this because I recently rewatched the entire series and It didn't sit right with me that episode in Season 5 Burning Bridges then I watched more of the series and realised how few episodes and characters are LGTBQIA+ I understand that not every show has these characters but I always thought with the introduction of Joe Hill there was a great opportunity for the Catholic Commissioner to have a LGTBQIA+ grandson and instead Joe is hardly used and in odd little plot devices. He is such a good character and he needs his own storyline pronto and so this is my little remedy.

I hope I have done this justice and that I have gotten things correct. If not then please let me know and I will take steps to rectify. Please be respectful in reviews as well if you choose to leave one. I plan for this little story to be six chapters and just to take us between the end of Season 10 and the start of Season 11.

I don't know when I will be able to update, it used to be weekly but that was before I got a job so...I will try and update when I can. I predict this little story will be seventeen (ish) chapters.

Disclaimer-Nothing here is mine just the characters of Sebastian and Lacey.

Please Read and Review and let me know what you think when you get a chance!

Spelling and Grammar are never my strongest points and so please keep that in mind as you read.

So I hope you enjoy this.

A Man Walks Into A Bar

Chapter 3-Assume Nothing.

The Reagan's get the shock of their lives when Seb, Lacey and Joe turn up for dinner.

"Bit ostentatious isn't it?"

That was Sebastian who was staring up at the house with his eyebrows raised. Joe followed his gaze and shrugged. "I don't know" he said truthfully. "You might know more about that, than I do" he said casually. Seb threw him a look but Joe ignored him.

It was true anyway. The house was big and this was more Seb's world than his own. Joe had grown up with a single parents who had been a working cop and a working Mom, he had grown up in an apartment where sometimes rent was all they could pay, he had grown up on carboard mac and cheese quite a bit to the point where his husband looked scandalised when he said he preferred it out of a packet, and he had seen his mother turn down many winter coats so he could have one. He didn't know how she had done it. With Sebastian it took a village.

But as he looked up at the home his Dad had grown up in he thought it was such a far way away from his own home that it was almost laughable. He didn't know what to say or what to do standing here with his daughter next to him in her best pair of jeans (they had raised a jeans girls not a dress girl) and his husband next to him and he breathed in and out.

"Into the breach" he said and he knocks on the door.

To his credit it's the kid…Sean who answers. Sean who had known that today was the day he was going to bring his family and Sean who looks all bright and beaming when he opens the door in what truly has to be the most horrible looking sweater Joe has ever seen.

"Hey Joe. Hello…Sebastian. Hi Lacey!"

Lacey smiles but otherwise says nothing. Explaining to Lacey that she had family that she had never met before was hard. Explaining that they were going to see them had been even harder. By nature they had not risen a shy child but she was shy today and he could see it written on her face.

There was a pause as they all stood there and then.

"Can we come in?"

"Yeah sure, we all just sat down. I mean…do you want me to take that" he said pointing at the box of pastry.

"No I've got it" Sebastian said and Joe rolled his eyes.

"My husband stress bakes" he said as they stepped into the house and Sean shut the door.

"I do not stress bake"

"Please you've made fourteen different pasties there with fourteen different fillings and fourteen different shapes. I don't know half of it but our entire house smells like enriched dough"

Sean looked between the two of them opened his mouth no doubt to ask what enriched dough was but then he closed it.

"I cook for a living I had to bring something. And there is not just pastries, I also did bread"

"Aha"

"Nice. You do any sourdough?" Sean asked but before Sebastian could answer there was a shout that Joe knew came from his Unc…no Danny.

"OI KID THE FOOD IS GETTING COLD IN HERE"

Sean rolled his eyes.

"Were doing chicken garlic today"

"Nice" Joe said. Sebastian rolled his eyes.

"Look. Why don't you come in and—"

"Actually Sean I was thinking maybe I would go first. Sebastian give him the box"

"If they turn out to be ass…well not nice people I don't want to have cooked for nothing. No offense kid"

"None taken and were not by the way. Honestly this will be the best thing that we've had since you've first arrived. Did you do anything with white chocolate by the way?"

"SEAN MICHAEL—"

"COMING" Sean bellowed with an eyeroll taking both boxes and with one squeeze of his hand he left his husband standing there and followed him out into the main dining room where everyone was waiting.

It took a moment to get used to them all again. They were all there and waiting and ready and he breathed in and out.

"Joe brought pastry. Homemade pastry"

"Oh what kind?"

"Fourteen different kinds of cakes, pastries and buns" he says quietly his hand shaking from side to side. "And I didn't make them but—" he stopped suddenly and then remembered that he walked through doors for a living, he had survived worse than this and he was going to get through this one way or the other.

"Dad can you budge up a bit, Joe brought his…"

"Partner. And my kid" he said breathing in a little. He could almost taste it on the air the nerves.

Everyone's eyes snapped back to him.

"You have a kid?" Erin said looking at him. "Aren't you a bit young for that?"

"Erin!"

"Oh like I am not the only one thinking that" Erin Reagan said with an eye roll.

"I do have a child yes. She's six"

"She?"

"Lacey" he said to Jamie Reagan's question. "I…my…fuck" he said and then he turned to the hallway.

"Yeah I think you better come in and meet everyone" he said and he knew that he sounded calm but Sebastian would hear it in his voice in that way that only his husband could do how nervous he was.

Lacey stomped into the room first her boots clacking on the floor. She pressed herself to his side and looked around dark eyes taking in everyone staring at her and then behind her came his husband. Gently he pressed Lacey to his other leg and then linked hands with his husband so just in case there was any confusion (and there wasn't by the way) everyone knew that Seb was his partner.

"This is Sebastian, my husband. This is Lacey our daughter. Sebastian, Lacey…this is my Dad's family"

For a second everyone stared at him in complete and utter shock and then.

"Epic"

It was Jamie's wife and she was looking thrilled. She stood up her blonde hair just brushing the tops of her shoulders and she stuck her hand out to Sebastian who took it looking slightly mollified.

"Eddie" she said grinning. "Its' really nice to meet you Sebastian"

"You too"

Then Jamie Reagan got up.

"Jamie"

"Hello"

"Wow" Danny Reagan said getting up too. "Had to admit this I did not see coming. Damn. Joe is just the gift that keeps on giving—"

"Dad"

"Not this Joe the other one. Hello" he said shaking Sebastian's hand. "Nice to meet you. Sean consider yourself grounded for keeping this one a secret from me"

"Worse secrets to keep" Sebastian muttered. "Could have been a Packers fan"

Danny smiled as if he had met a new friend. It would have looked nice but on Danny' s face it was slightly frightening. Joe was beginning to realise that this was his default expression which would explain why he had the highest amount of collars in the place.

Erin Reagan was also on her feet and her smile was gentle and kind. This was going very well but Joe knew that the two men who were more than likely to say something were both sitting down and then suddenly when everyone else was going back to their seats Henry Reagan heaved himself to his feet.

"Nice to meet you son" he said holding out his hand and Sebastian took it. Maybe it might have shown a bit on his face because Henry Reagan seemed to understand a little what they had been afraid off without them even saying it.

"Don't worry" he said beaming. "Were all allies here."

Sean smacked his hand into his face with the look of a one man mission and Joe grinned. Sebastian cracked a smile and then Frank Reagan was on his feet and if there was ever a moment that this was going to go wrong then it was now.

Frank smiled at them both and then.

"Welcome, to you all. It's very nice to have you here"

Sebastian raised one eyebrow but nodded. It was clear that he had been expecting this to go another way and Joe was relieved that it had not. He caught Sean's eye from where he was sat.

"You were right" he said to the kid.

"Told you so"

He grinned. Danny looked between the two of them and then Joe could see the moment that he got it.

"Ah nah we don't care that your gay" he said beaming. "Honesty makes life a bit more exciting doesn't it?"

"Aha"

"And I would like it mentioning that I know all the terminology"

"Oh dear God" Sean said looking at the ceiling as if held the answers to life.

"I see" Sebastian said his mouth twitching. "Well…thank you for that"

"Come and sit down" Frank said and they did just that. "Eh we…er…pray is that alright?"

"Well we don't" Sebastian said cheerfully. "But I suppose if you wanted to then we could."

"It's an okay one" Joe muttered. Sebastian snorted but didn't say anything else.

The prayer was short and sweet and over and then they were all serving food.

"So Sebastian what do you do?"

"I'm a chef" Sebastian said. It was a mark of how impressed he was by the food that he had not bothered to examine it. Joe knew the chicken was cooked perfectly and he grinned around a mouthful.

"Where?"

"Quake"

Eddie choked on her chicken.

"Quake?" As in THE Quake. Voted number one New York restaurant of the year Quake."

"Yes"

"Wasn't that nominated for a James Beard Award?" Erin said tilting her head to the side as if she was trying to remember. Sebastian chewed a piece of chicken and then swallowed with the air of absolute smugness.

"Yes"

"What kind of food do you do?"

"Modern American mostly"

"Can you get us in?"

"Depends"

"Oh please do" Erin said looking thrilled. "I mean the wait list for that place alone ahs got to be what…six months?"

"Nine?"

"Nine?"

"We do a tasting menu for one hundred and fifty bucks a head".

Danny inhaled his wine and spat most of it into a napkin. Joe snorted.

"Tasting menu…so that little one bite thing."

"Yes".

"A HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS A HEAD"

"Yes"

"OH MY GOD."

"Daniel please calm down"

"Calm down! Dad Maria is on about going to that place as a Christmas present. I was going to get it for her but…do you do a Black Friday deal or something?"

Joe was not sniggering it was hard not to.

"No we don't. But If you want I do have a couple of menus that need trying out so if she wants to try them then—"

"Please. She raves about you, I'm surprised her secret bat senses haven't detected you and she's not banging down the door any second"

Joe who had heard of Maria Beaz had a sudden image of that in his mind and he grinned. Lacey sat in between them was having trouble with her chicken and so as his husband chatted away he cut it into little pieces for her brushing a hand down her hair when she was done before he turned back to his own plate of food. Henry Regan was now asking questions and Joe had a feeling that they would be there a long night.

"This is nice" Frank said quietly. He was looking at Lacey and then back at him and then back at his plate again and it took Joe's detective brain a second to understand why.

He was looking at his son's granddaughter. The granddaughter that he was never going to meet and for the first time since this whole thing had begun Joe could understand how hard it was for Frank Regan. Perhaps it was hard for him, harder even than it was for Joe and he suddenly took a bigger gulp of wine than he was intending to before he got emotional for reasons he didn't know.

"This is nice" he said quietly and the old man looked at him for a long second and then he nodded.

Lacey leaned against his side and Joe put a kiss on top of her head as his husband turned to look at him and they both smiled at each other.

This was good.

This was very good.

This was very good indeed.

And there you go, hope you enjoy.

Next Chapter-The Reagan's digress. It's a family thing.
