Rough Start of a Legend

Registering for a pass to enter Mt. Silver is usually a straightforward process, all you needed was a trainer ID that said you were an ace trainer, the necessary supplies like flares and rations so that in the event you were in danger you could send up a flare, and finally the permission of the league overseer of the mountain.

The keyword there was usually.

"We are sorry Mr. Pines but your request to access Mt. Silver was denied." The balding old receptionist behind the desk said with a smile. "It looks like the captain personally declined your request."

Frustrated, Cal spoke. "But I don't even KNOW the captain! So why would he deny my request!?" Cal said, while throwing his hands up in the air and getting some irritated looks from the rangers lounging in the chairs near the buildings entrance. Seeing their irritated glares, he took a breath and continued.

"Look I just put in the request YESTERDAY. Is there any way I can meet the captain and try to convince him otherwise?" Cal looked at the receptionist with hope. Sadly, before the old man could respond they heard a voice.

"Even if I did let you try to convince me otherwise, I still wouldn't let a thief into the mountain. Who knows what would happen if you managed to find one of the apexes nest and tried to steal an egg."

Turning to look at the new arrival, Cal noticed he was an older darker skinned man with a black shirt and pants on with a blue jacket over the shirt, and lastly some blue combat boots that in his opinion looked terrible.

After observing the man that was walking closer to him, Cal finally registered what the older man had said, and with a glare on his face, Cal opened his mouth to speak.

"How am I a thief!? Better yet I don't even know you!? So how could you possibly know if I'm a thief!" Glaring into the mans eyes Cal could see the hatred behind his eyes as the older man glared right back at him. "You may not know me, but I know you!" The man spat out. But before he could continue, he was interrupted.

"Uh, Captain?" Both Cal and the captain turned to look at one of the nervous rangers that had approached them. Looking further back Cal could see that it was one of the rangers that had been sitting near the entrance. "Your kind of making a scene. Sir."

Snapping back to glare at Cal, what Cal now knew to be the captain didn't even bother looking at the ranger when he responded. "This is MY outpost, and I will damn well cause as many scenes as I please! IS THAT CLEAR RANGER!?" with the captain screaming in her face, Cal could see out of the corner of his eye the ranger reeling back and muttering out a quite "yes sir" and running back to her seat.

Not done with screaming the captain continued with his tirade. "AND AS FOR YOU! I KNOW YOU'RE A LITTLE SHIT HEEL OF A THIEF SINCE I WAS THERE WHEN YOU STOLE MY LITTLE GIRLS EGG FROM THAT BREEDER!" Reeling back and almost tripping over the desk that still had the smiling receptionist behind him, Cal took moment to think before realization set in. stepping forward, face awash with rage, Cal let his rage go in an explosion.

"YOU'RE THAT ASSHOLE WHO WAS HARRASING THAT NICE OLD LADY ABOUT GIVING YOU A DRAGONS EGG!" not intimidated at all, he continued to step forward and with a surprising amount of restraint he continued. "YOU CAUSED THAT NICE LADY TO DROP THE EGG! IF IT WASN'T FOR ME PASSING BY AND DIVING TO CATCH IT, MY ALTARIA WOULD HAVE DIED!"

Walking forward as well and now looming slightly over Cal, the captain opened his mouth to speak. "Yeah right, I've been in the field for far longer than you. I would think I would know what it would take to break a pokemon egg, ESPECIALLY a dragon's egg." Now smirking down at him, the captain backed so that he wasn't looming over the smaller man.

Cal, now looking at the captain in disbelief, looked around at everyone in the lobby as if to ask if what he just heard was real. Seeing everyone else, including the chastised ranger from earlier looking back at him with resigned expressions, Cal steeled himself.

"You, captain, are the dumbest person I have ever had the displeasure of meeting." Seeing him and every other person in the lobby look at him in shock, Cal continued. "You do this world a disservice with your continued existence in a place of power working with pokemon when you don't even know that even DRAGONS EGGS are still eggs, they break just like any other when dropped." Letting out a sigh, Cal feels the energy draining out of him realizing he's dealing with someone so incompetent.

Looking to leave the building Cal steps around and past the captain to head to the doors leading to the outside. Hearing a slight shuffle behind him as he steps past the older man, Cal turns back around to see the blue wearing bastards fist heading straight for his face.

Bracing himself and closing his eyes, Cal expects to feel a painful sensation only for him to hear a meaty "THWAP" as if someone just hit a brick wall. Opening his eyes, he sees the old bastard looking as if all the blood had drained out of his body and a large shadow had fallen over the both of them.

"E-E-E ELITE BR-BUNO SIR WH-WHY ARE YOU HERE!?"

Looking up and behind him in shock, Cal steps away and turns around to see a behemoth of a shirtless man who looks like he had muscles on his muscles, Bruno of the elite 4 glaring at the captain and holding his extended fist in a vice grip. Seeing Cal looking his way Bruno gives him a wry grin before his expression turns back to one of promised pain when he looks back at the captain.

"So here I was, trying to make my way up the mountain because I had heard rumors of the king of the mountain starting to cause some trouble." Taking a moment to squeeze the captain's hand and getting the old bastard to drop to his knees, Bruno continues. "And what do I see and hear? The overseer of the silver ranger base arguing with an Ace trainer and denying him access to the mountain."

Letting go of his hand, Bruno crosses his arms and continues his speech. "And then I find out the reason you denied him is because he saved an egg that YOU caused to almost be destroyed and THEN." Taking a moment to let out a huff the elite 4 member continues. "You then decide since you don't like what he had to say back to you, you try, TO HIT HIM."

Looking at the scene, Cal and everyone else in the lobby takes a step back as they feel the weight of something press down onto them. The captain, now flat against the ground tries to look up but fails. Bruno, upon seeing this, sighs and turns his gaze to Cal.

"Kid, your request is accepted." Pausing for a second at seeing Cals quite "yes!" After saying Cals request was accepted, Bruno turns to the shivering old man. "Oi, old man, give him the necessary papers while I drag this sorry bastard up to lance."

Having said his piece and getting a squeaky "YES SIR!" from the receptionist, Bruno picks up the still pale soon to be former captain with one hand and starts to make his way twords the entrance of the building. But before he makes it out the doors he pauses and looks back at Cal.

"Hey kid as an apology from the league for this, how about I give you some tips for a day sometime this month?" Cal, upon hearing the offer from one of the Elite 4 is left speechless and can only give a shaky thumbs up.

Seeing Cals shaky thumbs up, Bruno smirks and turns to continue his journey out the building. Still in shock Cal turns to the smiling receptionist whose smile is far more strained now, they hammer out the details and soon he has the papers saying he is allowed to be up on the mountain.

Walking to the door he sees the ranger that got yelled at earlier slumped over in her seat. Noticing that Cal is looking at her she waves him over before he can walk out the door.

Giving him a nervous smile, she starts to talk. "Hey uhhh sorry about earlier. I um kind of know how the captain, well former captain now I guess? Yeah, I know how he is so I tried to spare you the ya know, thing." She mimes an explosion with her hands. "that just happened."

Now knowing that she tried to help him, Cal shrugs his shoulders. "Don't sweat it all's well that ends well, I guess? Thanks for trying to help though. I appreciate it." Saying this he starts to turn away, but before he can fully turn around, he feels a tug on his shorts. Turning back, he sees the ranger with a small flush to her face. Seeing that she has his attention again she speaks up.

"You know I've never seen anyone actually go against the captain." Pausing here, she looks down. "If you don't mind, would you mind if I got your number? I um kinda want to learn how to be well um more assertive? No confident that's the word." Finishing she looks up at Cal with a smile.

Seeing her smile Cal also gets a small flush to his cheeks. But before he can freak out about a girl asking for his number, he realizes something and then gets a mischievous smirk on his face.

"Wow already asking for my number and we don't even know each other's names."

Face turning even redder the young ranger sputters.

"O-oh im sorry your name- I MEAN, oh Arceus, MY name is Cindy." Finishing her sentence, she covers her face with her hands. Laughing Cal introduces himself. "Hi Cindy, my names Cal, and yes you can have my number." Finishing with a teasing smile he shows her his pokegear.

After exchanging numbers, Cal tells Cindy goodbye and walks out the building. Upon exiting the building, we see that the outpost is right at the base of Mt. Silver. Upon seeing the massive expanse of forest he puts a content smile on his face and calls out a pokemon.

Flash, upon appearing from his pokeball lets out a questioning bark. "Arcanine?" the pokemon says. Cal looks at his large dog and answers. "We are at Mt. Silver bud. I need you to take me through the forest so we can find a good spot to set up camp for the next couple of weeks."

Letting out an excited bark, the arcanine lowers himself so that Cal can jump on his back. Once Cal makes sure he's all set he gives the order for Flash to take off. But it had been a while since he had ridden his arcanine so he forgot one thing. Flash was aptly named.

"WOAH SLOW DOWN A LITTLE BUDDY!" zooming passed the numerous amounts of trees all Cal could see was a blur and all he could hear was the wind whistling past them. At one point he was sure he heard a startled yelp from a ursaring as there surroundings passed at a breakneck speed.

Hearing his trainer asking him to slow down, Flash tapered off with his speed and started to slow down little by little. By the time he had reached a speed where Cal could see more than blurring trees, they had covered massive amounts of ground and where now in a large clearing with a stream off to the side. Cal, thinking this was a good place to set up camp told Flash to stop and to then go scout the area. Giving a salute or in this case the dog equivalent to it the legendary pokemon was gone from sight in a burst of speed.

After setting up his tent and making sure this wasn't some wild ursarings territory, thank arceus for the matron who taught him how to survive in the wilds. Cal was ready to send out the rest of his team when he heard and saw his arcanine crash through a tree and back into the clearing.

What could have sent him here that hard?
